Lena Hager
HARVEY -- Lena P. Hager, 94, Harvey, died March 24, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Harvey. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Lena was born Dec. 7, 1906, in the family farm home south of Balta. She was the daughter of Joseph P. and Caroline (Lesmeister) Grad. She grew up and attended school in that same area. After her schooling she stayed at home to help on the farm. She was later employed by other farm families and helped with their home and farm chores. She later helped as one of the cooks in a threshing cook car.
Lena married Peter G. Hager Oct. 29, 1928, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Orrin. Together they started their homestead southeast of Orrin in Pierce County. They lived and farmed there until 1955 when they moved to a farm three miles north of Harvey. They retired from farming in 1967 and moved into Harvey. Her husband died Feb. 19, 1984. Lena sold her home in 1987 and moved into the Albrecht Apartments.
Lena enjoyed embroidering, crocheting, quilting, sewing, flowers and gardening. She had a great love for entertaining her family, relatives and friends in her home. She will be missed by all.
Lena was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, St. Cecilia Altar Society, Catholic Daughters of America, Eagles Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Harvey. She was a former member of Hillside Township Homemakers and a lifetime member of Christian Mothers, both of Orrin.
She is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Daniel and Margaret, Rugby, Jerry, Bismarck, and Ronald and Wendelin and Delores, all of Harvey; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Philip Grad, Martin, Louie Grad, Harvey, and Walter Grad, Burlington; and three sisters, Rose Axtmann and Theresa Schwan, both of Harvey, and Betty Rudnick, Anamoose.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one granddaughter, Karen Hager; her parents; three brothers, Edward, Leo and Nick; and one daughter-in-law, Darnell Hager.
Lillian Harsch
PICK CITY -- Lillian Harsch, 83, Pick City, died March 26, 2001, at her home following a lengthy illness. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hazen. Further arrangements are pending with Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.
Charles Holkup
Charles J. Holkup, 84, Bismarck, died March 25, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, where a rosary will be held at 8 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services atthe church.
Charles was born March 4, 1917, in Washburn, to John and Frances (Macek) Holkup. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1935. Charles was a WWII veteran in the Army Air Force and served in Europe. He married Pauline Doll July 2, 1957, in Bismarck. He was an optician for Benson Optical for 37 years.
Charles loved gardening, camping and fishing. He loved meeting new people and making friends. He was a member of Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Pauline; two daughters and one son-in-law, Charlene Holkup, Moorhead, Minn., and Stephanie and Jeff Kubas, Walker, Minn.; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Joyce, Wahpeton; five grandchildren, Brigette, Luke and Nick Holkup, and Andrew and Amy Kubas; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Lillian, Miles City, Mont.; and two sisters, Agnes Gilroy, Minneapolis, Minn., and Frances Holkup, California.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Ann Campbell.
Julie Kiefer
FARGO -- Julie Kiefer, 42, Fargo, died March 26, 2001, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Church of the Holy Spirit, Fargo. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Fargo.
She is survived by her parents, Leo and Angie Kiefer, Fargo; one brother, Ronald, Oakdale, La.; and one sister, Pam Simonson, Fargo. (Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo)
Emery Poitra
Emery Justin "E.J." Poitra, 28, St. Joseph, Mo., formerly of Dunseith, died March 21, 2001, in St. Joseph, Mo. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Louis Catholic Church, Denseith. A traditional ceremony and burial were held March 24 at his wife's request on Potawatomi Reservation, Mayetta, Kan.
Emery was born Oct. 25, 1972, in Bismarck, the son of Norma Parisien and Emery Silk. He lived for a time in Bismarck and Grand Forks. He was an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa at Belcourt and was given the traditional name of "Charging Bear." He and his mother moved home in 1978.
Emery attended school at Turtle Mountain Community School in Belcourt from kindergarten through twelfth grade, where he played basketball and football, and graduated in 1992. His mother married Terry Poitra in 1979. He was adopted by Terry Poitra and took the Poitra name Jan. 30, 1986. Although he was raised as a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, as an adult he chose to practice his traditional religion.
Emery entered the U.S. Army in 1992. He did his basic training at Fort Knox, Ky., and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, where he served as a Bradley mechanic. He was honorably discharged in 1995.
Emery and his companion, Diane Read, and her children from a previous marriage, son Erin and daughter Valerie, moved to Ruthville in 1996. From there they moved to Bottineau where Emery worked at Theel's from 1996 to 1997. In 1998 they moved to Beatrice, Neb., where they lived for three years.
Emery married Diane Brodsky Read in June 2000. Emery and Diane had no children together. He returned to St. Joseph, Mo., the hometown of Diane's parents, Steven and Wanda Brodsky, March 18, 2001.
Emery enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Diane; one stepson, Erin, St. Joseph, Mo.; one stepdaughter, Valerie, St. Joseph, Mo.; his parents; four brothers, Terry (TJ), Topeka, Kan., and Ben, Donovan and Trevor, all of Dunseith; his maternal foster grandmother, Emma Monette; and his paternal grandmother, Betty Poitra.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Mavis (Wilkie) Parisien; his maternal grandfather, Fred E. Parisien; his foster grandfather, Frank A. Monette; and his patneral grandfather, Leo A. Poitra.
Eva Purvis
Eva T. Purvis, 77, Mandan, died March 25, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with Deacon Dave Vaughn officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. and a vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home and for one hour prior to services at the church.
Eva was born Nov. 4, 1923, in St. Anthony, the daughter of George A. and Frances (Leingang) Hoffman. She was raised in the St. Anthony area and educated at St. Joseph Catholic School in Mandan. She married William Monroe Purvis Jan. 27, 1957, and he died Jan. 8, 1959. She loved her children and was very proud of building her own home with the help of her father.
Eva enjoyed traveling to other parts of the country and Mexico. She liked sewing clothing, collecting porcelain dolls and crocheting afghans. She had been a waitress at the Havana Club, the Prince and the Dutch Girl Cafe in Mandan.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Wilbert Fisher, Solen, and Jackie and Bruce Basaraba, Bismarck; one stepson and his wife, William and Marilyn Purvis, Morgan Hill, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Regina Wurdeman, Erie, Ill., Ann Miller, Mandan, Sally and Bob Weethee, Osborne, Kan., and Jeanette and Marvin Koch, Billings, Mont.; six brothers and five sisters-in-law, Tony and Rose, Holiday, Fla., Leo and Judy, Chubbuck, Idaho, Andy, Spirit Lake, Idaho, Tom and Leni, Sun City, Calif., Daniel and Unity, Denver, Colo., and Edward and Liz, Wellton, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Purvis; one daughter, Shirley Mathern; one granddaughter, Rebecca Fisher; her parents; two sisters, Margaret Gmur and Rose Austin; and one brother, Jacob Hoffman.

WAHPETON -- MaryLou Rader, 62, Wahpeton, died March 27, 2001, in a Wahpeton care center. Services will be held at 10:15 a.m. Thursday at St. Catherine's Living Center, Wahpeton. Further arrangements are pending with Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon.

MCCLUSKY -- Katie Schauer, 90, McClusky, formerly of Turtle Lake, died March 23, 2001, in the Turtle Lake hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake. Burial will be in the city cemetery.
She is survived by her husband, Ed; one daughter, Elaine Rodgers, Underwood; two sons, Emanuel, Turtle Lake, and Norman, Mountain View, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. (Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake)
Loretta Sherman
Loretta Sherman, 97, Bismarck, died March 27, 2001, in a local hospital. Arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.
John Schuchart
John A. Schuchart, 71, died March 25, 2001, in Palm Springs, Calif. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. April 9 at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce; two daughters, Deborah Kelley, Omaha, Neb., and Susan Felton, San Francisco, Calif.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one brother, Frank, Omaha, Neb.
Clarence Thompson
MINNEWAUKAN -- Clarence E. Thompson, 86, Minnewaukan, died March 26, 2001, in a Devils Lake care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Free Lutheran Church, Minnewaukan. Further arrangements are pending with Nelson Funeral Home, Minnewaukan.
Cecelia Young Bear
Cecelia Young Bear, 61, Bismarck, formerly of Mandaree, died March 25, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Four Bears Community Center, New Town. Further arrangements are pending with Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City.
Marie Ellison
Marie R. Ellison, 86, 206 Ninth Ave. S.W., Mandan, died March 25, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Private servies were held and burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.
Marie R. Ellison was born May 27, 1914, in St. Paul, Minn. She was the daughter of Anton and Mary (Strunz) Brigl. She was raised on her uncle Steve Brigl's farm south of Mandan near Huff. Marie attended school in Mandan and graduated from Mandan High School. After that she went to Dickinson State Teachers College where she obtained her teaching certificate.
Marie taught country school south of Mandan at Crown Butte No. 15 and Bonanza No. 2 in Morton County until she married William P. Ellison in 1940. After her husband died in 1959, Marie worked at the Q&R Clinic in the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Department until her retirement in 1979.
Marie was active in various senior citizen and voluntary activities until poor eyesight caused her to stop.
Marie is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, William J. and Nancy Ellison, Santa Monica, Calif.; her brother, Paul Brigl, St. Paul; and many nieces and nephews.
