WILLISTON -- Ida L. Helstad, 84, Williston, died March 16, 2001, in a Williston medical center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.
She is survived by three daughters, Sharon Berger, Columbia, S.C., and Kathy Rossland and Roxie Helstad, both of Williston; one son, Glen, Williston; eight grandsons; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Edna Swenson, Williston; and three brothers, Palmer, James and Gordon Skaare, all of Williston. Edward Johnson
WILLISTON -- Edward A. Johnson, 89, Williston, died March 18, 2001, in a Williston medical center. Arrangements are pending with Fulkerson Funeral Home, Williston.
Robert Johnson
WILLISTON -- Robert W. Johnson, 61, Williston, formerly of Ray, died March 16, 2001, in a Williston medical center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Rainbow Valley Lutheran Church, rural Ray. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
He is survived by one son, Todd, Wadena, Minn.; one grandchild; his mother, Ruby Johnson, Williston; and one brother, Gene, Williston. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)
D. Breen Kennelly
D. Breen Kennelly, 72, 204 11th St. N.W., Mandan, died March 16, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughters rosary will be held at 4 p.m. and a parish vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday at Weigel Funeral Home until services at the church.
Breen was born May 12, 1928, in Bismarck, the son of Roy and Helen (Breen) Kennelly. He was raised and educated in Bismarck where he graduated from Bismarck High School. He continued his education at the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., earning a B.A. degree in business. He later attended the American Floral Art School. Breen served in the U.S. Army in Korea.
On June 28, 1952, Breen married Beverly Friesz in Mandan. He was first employed with Mandan Beverage Co. and then owned and operated Breen's Floral for 15 years, which is now Hirsch Florist. Breen served as an administrative hearing officer for the N.D. Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1994.
Breen was an active member of Mandan Eagles Club and was a volunteer for St. Vincent De Paul Society.
This kind, gentle, patient man was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, whose greatest joy was spending time with his family. Amongst his interests were doing crossword puzzles, playing golf, bird-watching and being a Vikings fan.
Breen will be missed dearly by family and all those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly; one son, Patrick James, Mandan; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and James Boyle, Rapid City, S.D., and Helen and Leonard Bullinger and Jane and Randy Rath, all of Mandan; five grandchildren, Vanessa Bullinger and fiancee Justin DeCoteau, Brian Bullinger, and Rachel and Lisa Rath, all of Mandan, and Brianna Boyle, Rapid City, S.D.; three sisters, Royann Kennelly, Bismarck, Estelle Shirley, Chandler, Ariz., and Helene Peterson, Scottsdale, Ariz.; and his special friends, Shoko Yanai (foreign exchange student), Japan, and Chana Ereth, Mandan.
He was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Brigid; and his parents.

August Lutz, Bismarck, died March 18, 2001, in a local hospital. Arrangements are pending with Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck.
Rose Schatz
DICKINSON -- Rose Schatz, 70, Dickinson, died March 15, 2001, at her home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MST Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson. Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. CST Wednesday in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph; three daughters, Carmel Steckler, Montana, Geralyn Chwialkowski, Minnesota, and Bonnie Thompson, New Mexico; seven grandchildren; six sisters, Mary Palm, Emma Haag, Margaret Mook, Minnie Schatz, Sister Veronica Haag and Sister Regina Haag; and two brothers, Joe and George Haag. Ruth Staley
Ruth Elizabeth Staley, 96, Mandan, died March 17, 2001, in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Steve Wisthoff officiating. Burial will be held in the spring in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck.
Ruth was born April 2, 1904, in Bismarck, to Charles Tucker and Cora Olive (Falkenstein) Staley, Burleigh and McLean County pioneers. She was raised and educated in Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1922. She attended UND and graduated from Northwestern University and the Chicago Art Institute.
Ruth taught music and art at Fairmont State College, Fairmont, W.V., from 1928 to 1944. She then became the "training coordinator" for the personal department of Owens Illinois Glass Company at Fairmont.
Ruth returned to Bismarck in 1945 and was active in civic and club activities. One of her loves was the culture and raising of roses. She had been state president of the ND Republican Women and vice chairwoman of the Republican Party.
Ruth was a member of First Baptist Church, PEO Sisterhood, Current Events, Thursday Music Club, Daughters of the American Revolution and a charter member of Bismarck Zonta.
She is survived by three nieces, Cora Jean Kleppe and Sally Bernstein, both of San Mateo, Calif., and Mary Ann Geiger, Kenmare; Dr. Robert Stoudt, Los Altos, Calif.; and her grandnieces and grandnephews, Jeff Geiger, Laurie Johnson, Wendy Keller, Bill Kleppe, Peter Kleppe and Sarah Kleppe.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Esther Bork and Marion Stoudt.
The family prefers memorials to North Dakota Historical Society.

Elmer Bates, 84, Laurel, Mont., died March 17, 2001, in Laurel. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. MST Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah. Further arrangements are pending with Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.
Alberta Dodd
BUFORD -- Alberta Dodd, 100, Buford, died March 17, 2001, in a Williston medical center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Faith United Methodist Church, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston.

Elsie Farstveet
BEACH -- Elsie M. Farstveet, 98, Beach, died March 17, 2001, at her home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Wednesday at First Lutheran Church, Beach, with the Rev. Roger Dieterle of Belfield officiating. Special music will be provided by Mary Farstveet, soloist, Wilma Hayden, organist, and Machelle Schmaljohn, flute soloist. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and honorary pallbearers are her seven sons. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery, Beach.
Elsie Marie Geyer was born April 7, 1902, in Crystal, to Henry and Maria Birkholz Geyer, the youngest of 10 children.
The family moved to Plaza to homestead and Elsie started school. In 1908, the family moved by boxcar train to Thelen by Rocky Butte, south of Beach, where she grew up. She was confirmed in St. Paul Lutheran Church, Beach, in 1917, with the Rev. Trinklein as pastor.
Elsie attended normal school in Dickinson and Minot. At the age of 18 she taught at the same Rocky Butte school where she had received her eighth grade diploma. She bought a Model T and lived on the Geyer farm while teaching.
Elsie and Knute Knutson Farstveet were married July 22, 1922, in a double wedding with her niece Marie Helm and Selmer Abraham in Beach. That summer she cooked for the harvest in a cook car while Knute threshed wheat. That winter they moved to Missoula, Mont. In 1926, the family moved back to Golden Valley County, where they farmed and raised 10 children. Knute and Elsie moved into Beach upon retirement in 1968. Knute died Jan. 21, 1972.
Elsie was the oldest member of First Lutheran Church, Beach, where she was a member of Ladies Aid since 1930. She was a life member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 5, Beach, and a member of Thelen Homemakers, the oldest homemakers club in N.D., since 1926.
Elsie loved to sing and harmonize in her alto voice. She enjoyed cooking and baking, especially pies and breads. She loved to read, even in her 98th year, getting large print books from the N.D. State Library. She was an excellent seamstress and crocheted afghans for all her children, presenting baby afghans to all the newest members of the family.
Elsie's greatest joy was visiting with her family on a daily basis when they stopped by for coffee. She was known for her laughter and love for children. Her mothering extended far beyond her immediate family. She was a treasured friend to many as a pioneer of Golden Valley County.
She is survived by her 10 children, Eleanore (Verne) Ward, Omaha, Neb., Alvin (Margie) Farstveet, Beach, Keith (Myrna) Farstveet, Beach, Marge (Dick) Mosser, Beach, Knute Farstveet Jr., Beach, Ellef Farstveet, Aurora, Colo., Gary (Marge) Farstveet, Beach, Rex (Myrna) Farstveet, Dickinson, Sharon Dietz, Beach, and Craig (Cheri) Farstveet, Winnemucca, Nev.; 32 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Knute; one grandson, Scott Ward; four sisters; and five brothers. (Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home, Beach)
John Hatzenbuhler
John R. Hatzenbuhler, 79, rural Mandan, died March 19, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. John P. O'Leary officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m.
John R. Hatzenbuhler was born April 3, 1921, near Crown Butte, to Ralph and Elizabeth (Stein) Hatzenbuhler. He lived in that area when he married Ida Gratz Jan. 12, 1943, at St. Vincent's Church, where they were presently active parishioners. They farmed and raised cattle 16 miles west of Mandan. They moved to Mandan and were active members of St. Joseph's Parish from 1956 to 1970, when they moved back to the farm, where they were presently living.
John was a member of Mandan Moose Club and Bismarck Eagles Club. He enjoyed working, dancing and being home with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Ida; one son and daughter-in-law, John J. and Stephanie (Miller) Hatzenbuhler; one daughter and son-in-law, Ida and Jim Bauer; eight grandchildren, Lori, Lynn, Lisa, James J. and Tom Bauer, and Lacey, Kaylee and John Ross Hatzenbuhler; nine great-grandchildren, Justin, Rachel and Brian Kostelecky, Chad, Curt and Brandon Zachmeier, Renae and Ryan Zachmeier and Kimberly Bauer; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack R. and Helen (Schmidt) Hatzenbuhler and Jim R. and Lucille (Fleck) Hatzenbuhler; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lillian and Simon Schmidt and Lorraine and Stanley Gerhardt, all of Mandan; one sister-in-law, Florentine Hatzenbuhler; and one brother-in-law, Frank Schmidt.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Joan Anne; his parents, Ralph and Elizabeth (Stein) Hatzenbuhler; two sisters, Cecelia and Isabelle; one brother, Ralph; and one brother-in-law, Floyd Mosbrucker.
