Sophia Schaefer
Sophia M. Schaefer, 85, Bismarck, formerly of Turtle Lake, died March 2, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Turtle Lake, with the Rev. Randy Emgarten officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Music for the service will be provided by Georgean Lick, organist, and a mixed quartet of Darla and Dorie Schaefer, and Shannon and Ryan Okerson.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and will continue at the church one hour before services.
Sophia Marie Skagen was born Nov. 9, 1914, at Turtle Lake, to George D. and Marie (Anderson) Skagen. She grew up on her parents homestead 12 miles northeast of Turtle Lake, where she attended rural school and high school in Turtle Lake. As a young woman, she worked in Bismarck at the OKay Confectionary and for a time in Tacoma, Wash. She married Walter Schaefer on Sept. 2, 1945, at Bismarck. They lived and farmed northeast of Turtle Lake until they retired in1971 and moved into Turtle Lake. Walter died June 27, 1977. She then made her home in an apartment in the McLean Manor at Turtle Lake until becoming a resident of The Terrace at Bismarck in May 1999.
She was a lifetime member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and Church Women at Turtle Lake. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting and baking.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Arlan Okerson, Bismarck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Duane and Jeannie, Turtle Lake, and Gene and Virginia, Utica, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Marbelle and Clarence Putz, Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews.

Edna Schatz
MCCLUSKY -- Edna Schatz, 90, McClusky, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, went home to her heavenly father on Wednesday, March 1, 2000, in the Underwood nursing home, where she and her husband, Sam, have resided for the past five years. Her life will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, McClusky, with the Rev. Iva Laudermith officiating. Burial will be in the McClusky Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.
Edna was born Aug. 22, 1909, in Harvey, to William and Lydia (Nagel) Jurczewsky. She was raised and educated at McClusky. She graduated in McClusky's first high school graduating class in 1926. She attended Valley City State Teacher's College and taught school in the Strasburg area. She taught one of Lawrence Welk's younger brothers. Edna married Samuel Schatz, June 30, 1928, at McClusky. They lived and farmed in Whittaker Township, southeast of McClusky. In 1945, they moved into McClusky so that their children could attend high school. Sam continued to farm and raise cattle. Edna took great pride in caring for her family and home. Her friends and neighbors were especially important to her, having many long and lasting friendships.
Edna was an avid gardener and canned nearly everything. She was an excellent cook and baker, and made delicious German (dough) dishes. She shared these talents with their mixed potluck groups, friends, neighbors and most of all, family. Her creativity was evident in the beautiful handsewn quilts and knitted afghans, having made one for each of her children and grandchildren. She also helped her friends and neighbors in their quilt making. Her creativity continued into beautiful needle and embroidery work.
Edna enjoyed many activities. Her church, being of great importance, she participated in many of its projects, ladies aide, Bible studies and serving on the church board. She was a member of Eastern Star, having served as worthy matron. She was past president of American Legion Auxiliary and McClusky Senior Citizens. She was involved in the Birthday Club, Homemakers Group and was always available to help her family and friends. She enjoyed spending many days with her daughter and family at Blue Lake near Mercer.
She will be greatly missed.
Edna is survived by her husband of nearly 74 years, Samuel; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Donald and Doris, Bella Vista, Ark., and Arlen, McClusky; one daughter and son-in-law, DeLila and John Wagner, Bismarck; eight grandchildren, James Schatz, Chicago, Elizabeth Schatz Wagner, Denver, William Wagner, Portland, Ore., Lynn Wagner, Jackson, Wyo., Laurie Holverson, Bismarck, David Schatz, River Falls, Wis., and Kevin and Steven Schatz, Hemet, Calif.; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant sister; two brothers, Walter and Roland; and a grandson, John "Jack" Wagner.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to United Methodist Church, McClusky, or McClusky City Cemetery.

Adam Volk
HARVEY -- Adam Volk, 92, Harvey, died Feb. 29, 2000, in the Harvey nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Harvey.
He is survived by two sons, Pius, Harvey, and Ronald, Lynnwood, Wash.; one daughter, Lola Jones, Gold Beach, Ore.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Lillian Weaver
LARIMORE -- Lillian Weaver, 84, Northwood, died March 1, 2000, in Northwood. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, Larimore, withburial in Bellevue Cemetery, Larimore.
She is survived by two sons, David, Bismarck, and Dennis, Fargo; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Ada Muir, Johnston, Margaret Carlson, Larimore, and Arabelle Halstenson, Niagara. (Bakke Funeral Home, Larimore)

Carroll Evanson
ARNEGARD -- Carroll "Kelly" Justin Evanson, 80, Arnegard, died March 3, 2000 in the Watford City hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Wilmington Lutheran Church, Arnegard, with burial in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; his daughters, April Obenour, Arnolds Park, Iowa, Vicki Peterson, Fort Benton, Mont., and Laurie Driggs, Bentonville, Ark.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his brothers, Orvis, Arnegard, Glen, Great Falls, Mont., and Gerald, Steilacoom, Wash.; and his sisters, Idella Ritter, Phyllis Hutchinson, Jean Ellenz and Eleanor Wright, all of Wachougal, Wash., Delores Price, Portland, Ore., and Gloria Keller, Valperaiso, Ind. Catherine Fitzgerald
WING -- Catherine J. Fitzgerald, 90, formerly of Wing, died March 2, 2000 in a Jamestown care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wing, with the Rev. Muriel Lippert Schauer officiating. Burial will be in Wing Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, and Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. A public prayer service will be said at 7 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service.
Catherine was born Oct. 18, 1909 in McClusky, the daughter of Ole J. and Johanna (Pederson) Lee. She was raised and educated in Wing. She received her teacher's certificate from Valley City State Teachers College.
Catherine married John Fitzgerald on Dec. 24, 1932 in McClusky. They farmed for 29 years in Florence Lake Township and Catherine taught school in Sheridan County and Burleigh County for 27 years. John died Feb. 22, 1994 in Bismarck.
Catherine was active in Homemakers, and enjoyed reading, needlework, and quilting. Some of her quilts were donated to missionaries for distribution to society's less fortunate. She was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wing and was active in a Circle of the church. She also did volunteer work at the Wing Senior Center.
Catherine will always be remembered by family and friends for the gentle, quiet spirit, quick sense of humor, and twinkle in her eye.
Children remember her as always having time for others especially her children, whether they needed a listening ear or a story read. She always made time in her busy schedule. She was a caring, loving and precious lady. All have been blessed by her life, whether they called her wife, mother, grandmother or friend.
She is survived by her three sons and two daughters-in-law, Marvin and Betty Summerfield, Floria, Kenneth, Apache Junction, Ariz., and Howard and Karen, Bismarck; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Marlene and Richard Ziemer, Minneapolis, Janet and Sammie Hunter, Lakeland, Fla., and Lavonne Aadland, Davie, Fla.; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; and one brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Clara McKinnon, St. Ignace, Mich.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Dan McKinnon; her husband, John; and one brother, Oliver James Lee.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wing, or Central Dakota Village Nursing Home in Jamestown. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Anna Garland
CARRINGTON -- Anna Garland, 95, Carrington, died March 3, 2000 in a Carrington nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

Ruth Keim
Ruth Keim, 79, 2026 N. Kavaney Dr., Bismarck, passed away March 4, at her home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Joel Sherer officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck.
Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Monday, and 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday, both at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Ruth was born Dec. 30, 1920 at rural Ashley, the youngest child of 10 children of Konrad and Christina Pfeifle. She attended schools in Ashley and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley. Ruth was employed at Great Falls, Mont. and at Davenport, Iowa, for a couple of years. She then taught school in rural Ashley for six years.
On May 23, 1943, she married Raymond Keim at Fort Knox, Ky., where Raymond was stationed. She was employed at the PX at Fort Knox and also at Fort Campbell, Tenn. After the war, they resided at Ashley for five years and moved to Bismarck in 1950. Ruth was employed at the Bismarck Tribune for 29 years, and then with the ND Legislative Council during the 1980-1981 session and also the Children's Outlet for six years.
From 1975 to 1996, she was on the board of the Disabled Workers of ND as recording secretary and treasurer.
Ruth volunteered at Faith Lutheran Church where she was a member since 1950, and also the Friendship Circle doing quilting and crafting.
Ruth adored her daughter, Karen and two special grandsons, Jason and Justin. She loved babysitting them and loved cooking and baking for them. She also had a special bonding with nieces and nephews who grew up with her.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen K. Marter, Bismarck; two grandsons, Jason, Portland, Ore., and Justin, Bismarck; one sister, Emelia Kosel, Ellendale; three sisters-in-law, Christine Pfeifle, Bismarck, Evalina Schwarz, Garrison, and Alvera Glur, Ashley; 17 nieces and 15 nephews.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond in 1977; five brothers and three sisters, four nephews and one niece.
Memorials may be sent to Faith Lutheran Church or Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)

Pearl Lundberg
Pearl G. Lundberg, 88, Bismarck, and formerly of Washburn, died March 3, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, at Birka Lutheran Church, rural Washburn, with the Rev. Wilfred Hanson officaiting. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3:30-8 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Pearl Gertrude Lundberg was born Feb. 9, 1912 at rural Washburn, to Albert and Anna (Bundegaarde) Lundberg. She grew up on her parents' farm northwest of Washburn where she attended rural school. She graduated from Washburn High School in 1931. She attended Interstate Business College in Bismarck and was employed at the State Highway Department and the State Welfare Office for a number of years retiring in 1978. She became a resident of the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck in January of 1999. She was a member of the Birka Lutheran Church at rural Washburn, and attended First Lutheran Church at Bismarck. She is survived by one brother, R.M. Lundberg, Bismarck; one niece, Darlene Roach, Merrifield, Minn.; and one nephew, Melvin Christenson, Bloomington, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Myrtle Christenson; one brother, Norman; and one half-brother. (Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn)

Thelma Peterson
Thelma Peterson, 83, formerly of Almont, died March 1, 2000, in the Napoleon Care Center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Monday, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Chapel, New Salem. Burial will be in Sims Cemetery, rural Almont.
She is survived by her sister, Arlene Zueger, Wheatland; and several nieces and nephews. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Alfred Reule
Alfred Reule, 84, Bismarck, died March 3, 2000 in Spanaway, Wash. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday,at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending with Bismarck Funeral Home.

Rose Wentz
UNDERWOOD -- Rose Wentz, 88, formerly of Washburn, died March 3, 2000 in the Underwood nursing home. Services will be held at Goetz Funeral Chapel, Washburn, with burial in Washburn Baptist Cemetery.

Lloyd Williams
ARTHUR -- Lloyd J. Williams, 94, Arthur, died March 3, 2000 in an Arthur care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Arthur United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Adeline; one son, James, Arthur; two daughters, Mary Fowler, Bismarck, and Jane Christoferson, Fargo; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Burgum, Arthur. (Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo)

Kenneth Witikko
Kenneth Witikko, 47, formerly of Bismarck, died March 2, 2000 in Austin, Texas. Arrangements are pending with Bismarck Funeral Home.

Harold Debertin
PLAZA -- Harold Debertin, 88, Plaza, died March 5, 2000 in a Parshall nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Johnson Funeral Home, Plaza.

Cecelia Dworshak
Cecelia Dworshak, 72, 107 E. Bowen Ave., Bismarck, died March 3, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Revs. Cyprian Meier and John Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Cecelia was born on Nov. 18, 1927, on a farm in St. Anthony, the daughter of Adam D. and Agnes (Hoffman) Bender. On Jan. 25, 1946, she married Joseph Dworshak in Bismarck. They moved to Mandan in July of 1988.
She is survived by six sons and five daughters-in-law, Richard and Marge, Kansas City, Mo., Jerome and Colene, Omaha, Neb., Terry and Rita, Washburn, Joe Jr. and Linda, LaCrosse, Wis., David, Bismarck, and Jeff and Michelle, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Sandra Svihla, St. Anthony, Cindy and Pete Deichert, Raleigh, JoAnn and Rick Schmaltz, Bismarck, and Beverly and Rich Hausauer, Bismarck; 28 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Joseph, Edward and Frank, all of Salem, Ore.; three sisters, Annie Kuntz, St. Anthony, Helen Leingang, Mandan, and Josephine Pack, Wyoming.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, who died Feb. 4, 1994; her parents; one daughter, Jeanette; two grandsons, Dan and Ryan; one son-in-law, Ervin Svihla; and one brother, Fred. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)
