Joseph F. Miller
Joseph F. Miller died at 7 p.m., March 28, 2000, from complications due to cancer at his daughter's home in Bismarck. Joseph F. Miller was born on a farm north of Dickinson on Sept. 3, 1915, the first child of Frank and Mary (Kubischta) Miller and was a life long resident of the Dickinson area. His formal education was received in a one-room school on the hill near the farm and at St. Joseph's ("Sister School") in Dickinson. He then worked with his father farming and solving electrical and mechanical problems throughout the area. As a young man he moved to South Heart and first worked in and then ran a mechanical shop repairing and improving cars, tractors and all sorts of equipment. While there, he also became noted for his rollerskating ability. While skating he met Edith May Anderson. They were married on Oct. 14, 1941, and farmed east and later north of Dickinson while Joe also worked as a machinist at Vranna's Auto Parts store in town. His mechanical abilities soon became widely known and he was highly sought after for his expertise. Joe and Edith sold their farm northwest of Dickinson in 1945 and moved to a small house near the river in Dickinson. Joe then worked for and eventually owned for 23 years, Dickinson Supply, an automotive supply store. During this time, Joe and Edith had three children, Larry, now of Boise, Idaho, Marvin, now of South Bend, Ind., and JoAnn Wangler, now of Bismarck. Growing up by the river was a fascinating and enjoyable experience for the whole family, but both Joe and Edith's inherent interest in farming led them to consider buying a horse for the children. When Joe returned from the auction without purchasing a horse he informed the young family that he had bought the farm instead. Eventually, Joe and his family farmed 960 acres south of Belfield while Joe also continued to run Dickinson Supply until he sold it in 1972. Joe's early years of retirement from his store were occupied with farming, travels with Edith, especially to remote parts of the world including Alaska, Mexico and Australia, as well as many cruises and trips with his motorhome to visit children as they moved around the country. After he retired from the store, Joe was able to devote full time to his passions for farming and bowling. He continued actively farming until the mid-1980s. His enthusiasm for bowling was contagious and soon after he began in the 1950s, many in the extended family became involved, including his brother Jack, who subsequently owned Classic Lanes for 13 years. The Miller brothers, Joe and Jack, were recognized at all the major tournaments around the area. Joe continued to bowl at least 13 lines a week until a few weeks before he passed away. While he was ill, he was especially thrilled to receive cards signed by everyone in the Senior League. Joe was a longtime member of Knights of Columbus, Elks and other area clubs. Joe is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Larry J. and Pat Miller, and Marvin J. and Patty Miller; and his special daughter and her husband, JoAnn and Valentine Wangler, who lovingly cared for him during his extended illness. Other survivors are sisters, Theresa, Pauline and Rose; brothers, George and Mike; nine grandchildren, Brenda Stieg, Bonnie Benson, Christ Miller, Andrea (Wangler) Wallner, Katie Miller, Mary Wangler, Joseph Miller, David Wangler and Carl Miller; and three great-grandchildren, Paul Stieg, Alec Stieg and Sierra Benson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary; his wife, Edith; an infant sister; a brother and bowling buddy, Jack; as well as brother-in-law, Jake Kainz, Leo Anderson and Matt Anheluk.
