FARGO -- Leona E. Barnes, Fargo, died March 22, 2000, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo. She is survived by five sons, Jerry Kukert, Horace, Larry Kukert, Fargo, Delano Kukert, West Fargo, Clyde Kukert, Bismarck, Allen Kukert, Moorhead, Minn.; two daughters, Sherleen Larson, Fargo, and Carol Sharp, Costa Mesa, Calif.; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ruth Reile, Fargo, and Verna Giese, Bismarck.
James Marsar Cussons
COOPERSTOWN -- James Marsar Cussons was born June 12, 1920, in Cooperstown, the son of Marsar and Josephine (Schermerhorn) Cussons. He grew up and attended school in Cooperstown and graduated from Cooperstown High School in 1938. Jim attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. He went into the armed services in October 1941, and served in the North African and European theaters. He was discharged in March 1946, with the rank of captain. Jim returned to work in the Cussons Seed House in Cooperstown until 1956. He then began the Prairie Promoter, which he published until 1964. He graduated from Mayville State College in1966 with a teaching degree in English. He then taught school in Cooperstown for 12 years, part of which he served as principal. Jim served in the North Dakota Senate for two sessions beginning in 1978. After his term in the Senate James retired and took an interest in community affairs. He was a memmber of the Presbyterian Church and was currently treasurer. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, North Dakota State American Legion Band, Masonic Lodge, Commercial Club, Library Board, City Council and was treasurer of the Cooperstown Country Club. Jim was recently given awards for the many years of unselfish dedication to the Cooperstown Country Club. The American Legion presented Jim with a certificate of appreciation for outstanding work on the Veterans Memorial Center of the Griggs County Museum. Jim died March 22, 2000, in a Fargo hospital. Jim is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Barton W. and Orpha, Cooperstown; his nieces and nephews and their spouses, Marilyn and Merv Field, Belvedere, Calif., Richard Miner, Erskine, Minn., Diane Olson, Fargo, Lance and Judy Cussons, Yakima, Wash., Blair Cussons, Mandan; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Marcia Miner, Lois Hammer and Doris Cussons. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cooperstown, with burial in Cooperstown Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. today at Quam-Plaisted-Cushman Funeral Home, Cooperstown, and will continue at the church one hour before services. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials be given to Jim's interests and passions that were so dear to his heart.

ASHLEY -- Services for Alice Dockter, 72, Ashley, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley, with the Rev. Jim Friedrich of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Eureka, S.D. officiating. Burial will be in Ashley Cemetery. A rosary will be said at 7 tonight at Carlsen Funeral home, Ashley, led by Robert J. and Theresa Meyer. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. today at the funeral home. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour before services. Mrs. Dockter died March 21, 2000, in the Ashley hospital. Alice Wolf, the daughter of Frank and Eva (Holzer) Wolf was born April 22, 1927, near Zeeland on her parent's farm. She attended school and helped on the family farm. She was united in marriage to Harold Dockter on June 2, 1946, at Zeeland. They made their home in Ashley. She worked part-time at the Ashley Tribune for 10 years. In 1961, she began work at the Ashley Post Office as a clerk and temporary postmistress when needed. She retired in 1990. She enjoyed flower gardening, cooking and canning. She looked forward to going to coffee with her friends. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family. Alice is a member of St. David's Catholic Church in Ashley. Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Harold; one daughter, Patricia Dockter, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Mary Lynn, Eureka; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Morgan and Bonnie Wolf, Egan, Minn., and Richard "Dick" and Jean Wolf, Bemidji, Minn.; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Delores and Ozzie Miller, Strasburg, Julia Schweigert, Bismarck, and Gloria and Bill Bickler, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; and three grandchildren, Jessica Hulm, Christopher Hulm and Logan Eggiman. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers. Casketbearers will be Logan Eggiman, Eureka, Raymond Wolf, Zeeland, Gene Daschendorf and Donald Dockter, both of Ashley, Jay Miller, Strasburg, and Keevin Stroh, Venturia. The organist will be Carie Kappes, and the soloist will be Vera Glur. Mass servers will be Christ Meyer and Andy Meyer. The lector will be William Kretschmar. The Eucharistic minister will be Reuben Elshaug and offertory gifts will be presented by Bob and Brenda Meyer. The ushers will be Reuben Elshaug and Robert J. Meyer. Rachel E. Leopold
Rachel E. Leopold, 88, Jamestown, formerly of Bismarck, died March 23, 2000, in Jamestown. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at United Church of Christ, Medina, with burial in Medina Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A prayer service will begin at 7:30 tonight at the funeral home. Rachel E. Burkhardt was born Jan. 17, 1912, at Medina, the daughter of George and Christina Niefert Burkhardt. She was raised on the family farm and attended rural school near Medina. She married Almon John Leopold on Dec. 10, 1934, in Jamestown. They fared near Medina, and later moved into Medina. In 1954, they moved to Bismarck. She worked for Medcenter One in central supply for five years and later joined the Hospital Auxiliary where she was director of crafts for 14 years. She continued as a hospital volunteer for many years. She was also a district manager for House of Stewart Cosmetics while in Bismarck. Almon died July 17, 1976. In 1994, she moved to Jamestown. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Bismarck, Jamestown Evangelical Church, World War I Auxiliary, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Medcenter One Hospital Auxiliary, Capital Homemakers Club and the Senior Citizens Swing Band. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, knitting and crocheting. Survivors include her sister, Otilda Heinle, Jamestown; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one daughter, Arlys Rau; five brothers; and one sister.
Walter J. Martin
Walter J. Martin, 73, Bismarck, died March 21, 2000, peacefully at his home. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. Walter was born June 6, 1926, in Goodrich, the son of August and Amelia Martin. He ws educated in Goodrich, and in March 1944, entered the U.S. Navy where he served until receiving an honorable discharge in May 1946. After his discharge he worked a short time in Casselton before taking a job with the postal service in Goodrich. He was united in marriage to Marion Hahn on Jan. 11, 1948, in Casselton. Walter worked in different communities while employed with the postal service as a railway mail clerk including Fargo, Jamestown and Minneapolis. He was transfered to Litchfield, Minn., where his family was raised. Walter was postmaster in Dassel, Minn., for 5 years prior to his retirement on June 12, 1981. After his retirement Walter moved to Bismarck and became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He also belonged to the Elks, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed entertaining guests, visiting over coffee, playing cards, gardening, fishing and hunting. He was an extremely proud grandparent and was especially happy when the grandchildren would come to visit. He is survived by his wife, Marion; one daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Jerry Buchholz, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lynda Martin, Anoka, Minn.; three grandchildren, Andrea Buchholz, Thomas Martin and Jack Martin; two stepbrothers, Ken Redman, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Gary Redman, Grand Forks; and his stepfather, Al Redman, Goodrich. Ervin Rittenbach
MCCLUSKY -- Ervin Rittenbach, 74, McClusky, died March 22, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at Grace Lutheran Church, McClusky. Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, rural Mandan. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Sunday, at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky. Ervin was born on Oct. 14, 1925 near McClusky. He was the son of Jacob and Pauline (Waltz) Rittenbach. He grew up and attended rural school in the McClusky area. He entered the Army in April 1945 and was honorably discharged in November 1945. He returned to the McClusky area where he farmed. He married JoAnne Murray on Jan. 26, 1949 in McClusky. They farmed near McClusky and in 1963 moved into town where he worked as a mechanic at the Chevrolet and Ford dealerships. He drove a McClusky school bus for 37 years and also worked as a bus mechanic there for several years. He and JoAnne also processed meat and had customers from near and far. He attended the United Methodist Church in McClusky and was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts in McClusky. His hobbies included fishing and woodworking. Ervin is survived by his wife of 51 years, JoAnne; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Rick and Barb, Harvey, Randal, McClusky, Ronald, Linton, and Rodney and Vicky, Fargo; one daughter, Renae Rittenbach, Linton; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Lloyd, Bismarck; and one sister, Adeline Wisdom, Edmond, Okla. Nellie Solberg
Nellie Coad Solberg, an educator, artist, consultant and lecturer, died March 20, 2000 at her daughter Kay's home in Minneapolis, Minn. Memorial services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jake Kincaid officiating. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery. Nellie was born on July 8, 1907 in Sault Sainte Marie, Mich., the daughter of Sanford and Mary Florence McDonald Coad. She received her bachelor arts degree from Minot State College and a master's degree from the University of North Dakota. She did graduate work at the University of Wyoming and Washington and studied under a number of outstanding artists. Nellie taught art for many years in the Bismarck public school system at the elementary and high school levels. She also taught at Bismarck College and started numerous young people on careers in art. She taught students in her private studio from 1963 through 1997. In 1957, she promoted "Art for World Friendship," a program involving the exchange of artworks by children of different nations. In 1963, she was director of the First National Indian Art Show held in Bismarck in conjunction with the National Indian Congress with U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy in attendance. She held many one-man shows and won many awards in the United States and Canada. Nellie was named Outstanding Woman in Art for 1974 by the North Dakota Women's Coalition. She received the 1960 Bismarck Art Association Citation of Honor in North Dakota. The Worldwide Publication Two Thousand Women of Achievement in 1972. She was a charter member for the Society for the Preservation of the Old Governor's Mansion at Bismarck. In 1970, Nellie organized the Religious Arts Festival show at the Presbyterian Church and continued to direct this festival for 15 years. Nellie received the First Governor's Award for the Arts in 1977. The award recognized her lifetime promotion of the visual arts in North Dakota. Nellie was the oldest participant in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in 1999 at Minneapolis. She was president and historian for the National League of American Pen Women, and past president of Chapter AP PEO, Bismarck. Nellie's husband, Senator Esky Solberg, preceded her in death. She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Jeanne and Dr. Clarence Unruh, Laramie, Wyo., and Kay Link, Edina, Minn.; one son, Walter, Fargo; three sisters, Winne Bayes, Spokane, Wash., Elaine Meyer, Fargo, and Ruby Schussler, Manhattan, Mont.; one brother, Walter Coad, Bismarck; and three grandchildren, Laura Kay Unruh, Jeffrey (Kathy) Link, and Allison (Dean) Nelson; and four great-grandchildren, Rachel and Melanie Nelson, and Nicolle and Jeffrey Link; nieces, nephews and numerous friends. Gifts to the family will be directed to the Nellie Solberg Arts Education Memorial Fund.

Alton L. "Al" Larson
Dr. Alton L. "Al" Larson, 73, 104 Third Ave. N.W., Mandan, died March 23, 2000, in Houston, Texas. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in Mandan Union Cemetery. Military rites will be by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars and Mandan American Legion. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A parish vigil will begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Dr. Larson was born March 14, 1927, at Regent, to Goodwin R. and Minnie (Krogh) Larson, where he was raised and educated. He attended Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Ray on Dec. 29, 1951, at St. Paul, Minn. Dr. Larson started his optometric practice in Mandan which he operated from 1952-1983. During these years he took an active part in his community. His membership in the Mandan Kiwanis resulted in serving as president and received the perfect attendance award for 46 years. He was proud to be the first member of the Kiwanis to receive a lifetime membership. His dedication to his profession showed in serving as governor, appointed from 1971-1980 to the State Board of Optometric Examiners. He also served as secretary-treasurer for the North Dakota State Optometric Association. He received a lifetime membership in the American Optometric Association and the North Dakota Optometric Association. Dr. Larson was a true testimony of marriage, fatherhood and friendship. His quick wit and sense of humor and generous spirit will be cherished and sadly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Carolyn, Mandan; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marcene and Dade Farman, and her children Clint, Kirt, Wayne Lawton, of Sheridan, Wyo., Julie and ross and children Kari, Krystal, Kasie Haibeck, Mandan, and Minette and Jeff and children, Clinton, Cody Alyea of Breien; five sons, Brian and his son Eric, Atlanta, Ga., Remy and his son Jeremy, Casper, Wyo., Page and friend Mari Severson and her two children Megan and Eli Severson, Mandan, Glen, Mandan, and his son, Lee, Laurel, Neb., and Jay and his stepchildren, Zach and Corrine Dietrichc, Houston, Texas; two brothers, Robert, Regent, and Morris, San Francisco, Calif.; one sister, Grace Tillery, Rapid City, S.D.; one half-brother, Marvin Larson, Dickinson; and one half-sister, Gladys Larsen, Yakima, Wash.
