Alvin Suko
Alvin Suko, 69, Radisson, Wis., died Jan. 18, 2000, at the Rice Lake, Wis., convalescent center, where he was battling a short bout with cancer. Mr. Suko was born March 2, 1930, in Gackle, N.D., to Lydia (Suko) Mueller. He grew up on the family farm attending grade school and graduating from Gackle High School in 1948. After high school, Alvin attended the State School of Science in Wahpeton, graduating with a degree in drafting. He also was a school teacher for three years in a one-room country school south of Gackle. On March 30, 1952, he married Lenora Dockter. They had three children. On June 17, 1952, he entered the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Korea. He served with the 204th FA Battalion. He was discharged on May 25, 1954, as staff sergeant. He was in the lumber business for many years, living in St. Cloud, Minn., Leola, S.D., and Beulah, N.D., where he managed the lumberyard. After leaving Beulah they moved to Radisson in 1965 where he managed the lumberyard there. He later retired from the lumber business. Alvin was a very active member with the American Legion in Winter, Wis. He loved the legion dearly, and he will miss everyone there, especially Jim Vaghy and John Howe, his two very special friends. He is survived by one son, Kevin, Bruce, Wis.; one daughter, Karen (Larry), Rice Lake, Wis.; his three very special grandchildren; his mother, Lydia Mueller, Mandan; two brothers, Melvin (Karen) Mueller, Bismarck, and Gerald (Sandy) Mueller, Billings, Mont.; and many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lenora, in 1986; his stepfather, Paul Mueller; and an infant daughter, Denise. Services were held Jan. 23 in Winter, Wis., with burial in Radisson Cemetery. Emilia Voegele
BEULAH -- Emilia Voegele, 92, Beulah, died Jan. 30, 2000 in Beulah. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Thursday, at First Baptist Church, Hebron, with the Rev. David Ling officiating. Burial will be in First Baptist Cemetery, Hebron. Visitation begins after 3:30 p.m. MST Wednesday at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron, and for one hour prior to the service at the church. A prayer service will be held at 4 p.m. MST Wednesday, at the funeral home. Emilia Voegele was born on May 3, 1907 in Johanestal, South Russia, the daughter of Jacob and Christina (Balensky) Sauter. Emilia came to the United States with her family when she was three years old. They settled in Hebron where she was raised and educated. She worked as a housekeeper prior to her marriage. She married Donald E. Voegele on Oct. 16, 1927 at Glen Ullin. Following their marriage, they farmed north of Glen Ullin until 1963, when they moved into Hebron. Emilia loved crocheting and looking at family pictures. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Gordon (Rose), Bismarck, and Harlin, Glen Ullin; five grandchildren, Kent, Kayla, Kary, Bryant and Candace; and six great-grandchildren. Leonard R. Wentz
Leonard R. Wentz, 72, died Jan. 30, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at noon Wednesday, at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, rural Mandan, with full military rites provided by VFW Post No. 1326. Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. today and 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at the funeral home, with a Knights of Columbus service to follow. Leonard was the son of the late John and Verna (Busch) Wentz. He was born and raised on a farm near Rugby. He received his early education in Pierce and McHenry Counties. As a young man, he worked on the family farm with his father and later went to work for an R.E.A. Co-op as a lineman and service rep. While working for Baker Electric, he was assigned to outposts at Maddock, Rugby and Rolla. In 1950, he was called to active duty with the United States Army and served overseas in both Korea and Japan. After his separation from the military, he again worked for Baker Electric until 1956, when he joined the North Dakota Highway Patrol. He graduated from Highway Patrol Academy, the National F.B.I. Academy, Bismarck State College, and also attended many training sessions relating to Traffic Law Enforcement at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He also taught subjects relating to Traffic Law Enforcement and Accident Investigation at the North Dakota Law Enforcement Training Center during his tenure with the Patrol. He was promoted to District Commander in 1966 and served in that capacity at both the Williston and Bismarck districts. In 1978 was again promted to Staff Services Commander and transferred to the NDHP general headquarters, where he supervised the Training Division, the Personnel Section, the Property Section, and the Records Section. He was appointed Assistant Superintendent and also later supervised the Truck Regulatory Division. He was assigned as Field Forces Commander and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1985. Leonard was a member of St. Annes Church and is a life member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a Past Grand Knight of Council 1604 and was a fourth degree Knight. He belonged to several fraternal organizations including the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Moose Lodge No. 302, Am-Vets Club, and the North Dakota Peace Officers Association. He married Glenda Guderjahn at Rolla in 1956 and together they had two children, a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Vi, Chaska, Minn., and a daughter and son-in-law, Geri and Randy Frohlich, Mandan. He has six grandchildren, Aleisha, Matthew and Emily Frohlich, and Stephanie, Shannon and Sondra Wentz, whom he loved dearly and as a typical Grandpa, attempted to spoil them at every opportunity. He liked all outdoor activities and especially looked forward to the annual hunting season when he could join Doug and Randy and their friends on their hunting trips. He was an avid golfer and played at eveyr opportunity when weather permitted. Leonard is also survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mrs. Pete (Loretta) Schumacher, Bismarck, Mrs. Don (Marjorie) Olson, Balta; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Dennis and wife, Rosie Wentz, Crary, Wendell and wife Betty Wentz, Bismarck, and Donald and wife, Vangie Wentz, Williston; and many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. Cecilia Knoll, 63, 208 Fifth Avenue NE, Mandan, died Feb. 20, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation begins today from 3-9 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will begin at 7:30 p.m. Visitation continues Wednesday, at the church one hour prior to services. Cecilia (Kopp) Bohe Knoll, the daughter of Adolph and Cecilia (Rix) Kopp was born on April 30, 1936 on a farm south of Mandan. She was raised and educated in Mandan where she graduated from Mandan High School. She was married to Charles Bohe. In 1976, she married James Knoll in Mandan. Cecilia worked for the Bismarck Tribune in the camera/plate/press department for 25 years. Cecilia was outgoing, independent and strong-willed. She was an avid reader and collector of arrowheads. Spending time hunting, fishing and enjoying the outdoors were very relaxing to her. Her children and grandchildren held a special place in her heart. She is survived by her husband, Jim; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Charles (Connie) Bohe, Honolulu, Hawaii, David (Sharilyn) Bohe, Minot, Daniel and Tom Bohe, both of Mandan; three daughters, Charlotte Bohe, Bakersfield, Calif., Jodel Bohe, Mandan, and Katrina Knoll, Fargo; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Adolph Kopp, Chandler, Ariz., Henry and Stanley Kopp, both of Billings, Mont.; five sisters and four brothers-in-law, Margaret (Sam) Pendill, Garryowen, Mont., Patricia (Ron) Fletcher, Wst Jordan, Utah, Angeline (Phil) Ybarra, Denver, Colo., Mary (Frank) Goble and Caroline Matthews, all of Billings, and many family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her first husband, Charles Bohe, and a special friend, Angie Rudolph. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Kidney Foundation. Valentine Renner
Valentine Renner, 88, Mandan, died Feb. 20, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. today, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a St. Anthony Verein Rosary will be said at 7:45 p.m. followed by a parish vigil at 8 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Valentine was born on Oct. 19, 1911 at St. Anthony, the son of Valentine and Katherine (Bender) Renner. He was raised and educated in the area. He married Bertha Erhardt on Nov. 23, 1943 at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Center. They moved to Mandan, where he was in the trucking business until 1956, when he started dairy farming. He retired in 1978 and remained on the farm until the time of his death, for he loved his farm and his cattle. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and his grandchildren. He and Bertha had been married 56 years. He is survived by his wife, Bertha; two sons, Richard and Valan; one daughter, Mary Ann Preble, all of Mandan; eight grandchildren, Nicole, Stacey, Danielle and Eric Renner, Lance and Angela Preble and Breanne and Andrew Renner; three great-grandchildren, Lee Valentine, Blake and Sydney; and two brother, Mike, Mandan, and Ted, Dickinson. Frank J. Ressler, 83, Bismarck, died Feb. 21, 2000 in a Bismarck nursing home. Frank Ressler, the son of Martin and Katherine (Wetsch) Ressler, was born April 6, 1916 in St. Anthony. He was raised and educated in the St. Anthonyarea. On Feb. 14, 1944, he married Lucille Pitzer in St. Anthony. Frank worked as a mechanic for Zachmeier Garage and Thomas Motors in Mandan. They also farmed for eight years south of Mandan. Frank began working for Haggort Construction in Fargo from 1959 until 1962 and in 1964, he began working for Morton County until his retirement in 1970. He was an avid collector of over 500 caps, some of which were displayed on the ceiling of his room at the Baptist Nursing Home. He especially enjoyed being around people and was very close to staff and other residents at the nursing home. He took pride in giving people their first tour of the facility when theyfirst arrived. He enjoyed music, playing the guitar and looked forward to visits from his family and friends. Frank took great pride in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Frank is survived by his wife, Lucille, Mandan; his son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Bev, Mandan; his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Joel Morman, Mandan; four grandchildren, Lisa Brekhus, Lori Wiese, Jason Morman and Melissa Morman; three great-grandchildren, Shantel and Shelby Brekhus and Tristan Wiese; one brother, Ted, Mandan; and one stepbrother, Val Jahner, Salt Lake City, Utah. James "Jim" Jacob Wolf
James "Jim" Jacob Wolf, 60, 2500 Centennial Road, died Feb. 18, 2000 in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Wayne Sattler officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, at a later date. A prayer service begins at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Visitation is scheduled for 1-9 p.m. today, and 9-11 a.m. Wednesday, both at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Jim was born May 27, 1939 at Devils Lake, to Jacob and Barbara (Burgard) Wolf. He grew up and attended school in Esmond, where he graduated from high school. He married Grace M. Krim on June 22, 1960. He was a graduate of the University of Mary and was employed at the Bismarck City Engineering department. He enjoyed driving limousine for Limo Scene, which he did part time for many years, playing bridge, cooking, and was involved in several different spiritual support groups throughout the community. Jim is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Jeana and Jim Peinovich, Fargo, Jana Wolf, Sheppard AFB, Wichita Falls, Texas; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jim and Dianne, Las Vegas, Nev., Jason Wolf, Mesa, Ariz.; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Irene Schaan, Balta, Kathy Wichman, Minot, and Jane and Jim Frazer, Cheyenne, Wyo.; seven grandchildren, Chad and Chris Wolf, Brooke, Laura and Anna Peinovich, Phoebe and Jacob Wolf; and special friend, Grace Wolf. Pauline Bonnet
Pauline Bonnet, 94, St. Vincent's Care Center, Bismarck, died Feb. 3, 2000 at the center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Bismarck with the Revs. Jeff Franko and Lisa Ahlness officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent's Care Center, Bismarck, and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Pauline was born on Dec. 10, 1905 at the home of her parents, John Hieb Jr. and Christina (Bentz) Hieb in Schiller Township, Sheridan County. About 1913, they moved to Lincoln Township, where her father took over her paternal Grandparents' farm when the Grandparents moved to McClusky. She attended McClusky School. She was confirmed on July 4, 1920 at Zion Reformed Church, Lincoln Township. Pauline married Jacob J. Bonnet on Dec. 29, 1925 also at Zion Reformed Church. The couple farmed in Schiller Township until 1935 when they moved to another farm in Lincoln Township. She was active in the Homemaker's Club and Ladies Aid in Lincoln Township. They remained in Lincoln Township until 1951, when they moved to Bismarck. They moved to Marillac Manor in 1989 and in 1993, Pauline entered St. Vincent's Care Center. Jake died on June 3, 1996 in a Bismarck hospital. Growing up in a musical family with an organ in the household, Pauline learned to play the organ, at an early age, without formal training. Through the years, Pauline, together with her late husband, Jake, enjoyed a circle of friends having common interests of singing and recording German songs, hymns and organ music. They were active members of the Friendship Circle at Faith Lutheran Church. Pauline was an accomplished quilter. She was a member of the Capitol Quilters, taught quilting, and won quilting prizes in both Bismarck and Fargo. She was a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church. She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Pearl and Roy Dockter, and Darlene and Wallace Bolte, all of Bismarck; one sister, Martha Landenberger, West Sacramento, Calif.; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, 22 step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob J. Bonnet; five sisters, Lydia Frey, Christine Glaser, Magdalena Glaser, Caroline Bauer and Katie Dockter; four brothers, John J. Hieb, Jacob Hieb, Gustave Hieb, and Albert J. Hieb; and one son-in-law, Walter Schacher. The family requests memorials to the Lord of Life Lutheran Church Organ Fund. Mary Martin Knoll, 89, died Feb. 2, 2000 in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in the spring in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today and 1-9 p.m. Sunday, at Boelter Funeral Home, where a rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday. Visitation will continue on Monday one hour prior to services at the church. Mary married Michael Knoll on Jan. 28, 1930 at St. Mary's Church in Bismarck. Following their marriage, they farmed near Menoken until 1963 when they retired and moved to Bismarck. While living in Menoken, Mary was a member of St. Hildegard's Altar Society. She was a member of St. Mary's Altar Society and the V.F.W. Auxiliary. She loved to crochet and cook. Mary is survived by one daughter and two sons-in-law, Advina and Paul Kenyon, Las Vegas, Nev., and Marvin Krein, Bismarck; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Edward, Lake Stevens, Wash., Nick and Charlene, Bismarck, and Ken and Judith, Barstow, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Schafer, Bismarck, and Madge Kutzer, Burlington, Wash.; and one brother and sister-in-law, Jacob and Minnie Martin, Mandan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael in 1965; one daughter, Min Krein; one son, Leonard; one granddaughter; her parents; two sisters, Lacodia and Eva; and seven brothers, Adam, Michael, John, Dominick, Nick, Pius and Al.
