LAKOTA -- Esther Johnson, 85, Lakota, died Aug. 25, 2000, in a Lakota care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Lakota Lutheran Church. She is survived by one son, Eugene Johnson, Mapes; two daughters, Susy Moen, Steele, and Janet Holum, Grand Forks; one sister, Olga Johnson, Lakota; and two brothers, Ken Rio, Grand Forks, and Lynn Rio, Mesquite, Nev. James Allen McGuire
JAMESTOWN -- James Allen McGuire, 47, Jamestown, died Aug. 26, 2000, in a Fargo hospital. Services iwll be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Jamestown, with burial in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Kensal. He is survived by his wife, Sherry; two daughters, Cynthia McGuire and Jillian McGuire, both of Jamestown; his father, Joseph McGuire, Kensal; and four sisters, Phyllis Felchle, Grand Forks, Marlys Scherr, Bismarck, Connie Behm, Valley City, and JoAnn Vining, Jamestown.

Walter Schwalbe
CENTER -- Walter Schwalbe, 80, Center, died Aug. 25, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Center, with the Rev. Jon Erickson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 tonight and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue from 3-9 p.m. Monday at the church. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour before services. Walter was born April 1, 1920, the son of Karl and Susanna (Bairle) Schwalbe. He graduated from Mandan High School in 1940. As a youth, he was an ardent home run hitter on the Center baseball team. He married Gertrude Hagerott on June 28, 1951. They lived on the Schwalbe family homestead throughout their married life. He loved farming and ranching, and entertaining family and friends with stories of the pioneer days of North Dakota. He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren to fish. Walter served on the Oliver County Soil Conservation Board for 25 years, and on the Oliver County Planning and Zoning Board. He was vice president of the Oliver Rural Fire District Board and secretary-treasurer of the Area 4 (Great Plains) Agriculture Research Station at Mandan. He served on the Area IV Natural Resource Corporation. Walter was past director of the Oliver-Mercer REC, which he served for 18 years. He served on the citizens advisory board of the State Water Commission, the Oliver County Selective Service, and the Oliver County Farmers Home Administration. He was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and served in the church council. He was a longtime member of the American Angus Association, and received the North Dakota 1999 Commercial Charolais Producer Award. Walter is survived by his wife, Gertrude; one son, Alan and his wife, Sheila, and grandchildren, Errin Ann and Megan Allain, Center; his daughter, Susan Bohn and her husband, Thomas, Redmond, Wash.; and two sisters, Dora Cordes, Port Neches, Texas, and Anna Manny, Mandan. He was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Benker; and three brothers, Fred, Raynold and Albert. The family prefers memorials to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Center.

Lois Struwing
Lois Struwing, 101, Bismarck, died Aug. 25, 2000, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, with the Rev. Jim Cissell officiating. Burial will be in Menoken Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Lois Syble Coffin was born March 20, 1899, at Long Prairie, Minn., the daughter of Edward and Nettie (Lane) Coffin. In November of 1905, she came with her family to Ellendale by team and wagon. She married Nels Struwing on Oct. 19, 1918, and they lived in the McKenzie area. They later moved to Menoken where Lois was a mail messenger for the railroad. After Nels died in 1956, she moved to Bismarck and worked for the state auditor. In May of 1978, she moved to Crescent Manor where she lived until she broke her hip. On June 10, 1997, she moved to the Baptist Home and resided there until her death. During her retirement she was an active volunteer working at the Medcenter One/St. Alexius Print Shop, the North Dakota Silver Hair Legislature, gift wrapping for the Optimist Club, and going to Missouri Slope Nursing Home to help with activities. She was also a member of McCabe United Methodist Church. Lois loved to play the pump organ, piano and harmonica. She is survived by two sons-in-law, Grant Bergquist and Leon Owen; two granddaughters, Sharon Lang and Penny House; two grandsons, Mark and James Struwing; four great-granddaughters, Nicole and Keri Lang, Shelly Mills and Katie House; one great-grandson, Thomas House; and two special friends, Dennis and Denise Mautz. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Nels; four children, Cleo Smyth, Gene Struwing, Carol Bergquist and Peggy Owen; and two grandsons, Jimmie Lynch and Floyd Owen.

Catherine M. Vik
Catherine M. Vik, 83, Bismarck Baptist Home, died peacefully at the home with her family around her Aug. 25, 2000. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Brethren Church, 503 N. 24th St., Bismarck, with the Rev. Al Shaner officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bismarck Baptist Home Chapel. Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. today at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, where a prayer service will bgin at 4 p.m. today. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. Catherine was born Oct. 8, 1916, on the family farm in Lein Township, to Bertram and Mathilda Lein. She was raised and educated in rural schools in the Lein Township area. She married Sam Vik, Dec. 16, 1939, in Wilton. They farmed north of Driscoll and raised six children. In 1965, they moved to Bismarck where she took pride in her work as a nurses aid at the Bismarck Hospital. She assisted her daughter, Dee, in her painting business for over 10 years. Catherine, along with her husband, Sam, were charter members of Grace Lutheran Brethren Church. Her hobbies included watercolors, macrame, singing and traveling. Wherever she went she made herself at home with her smile and quick wit. She is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Dee and Dennis Sims, Bismarck, Rose and Gerry Vinopal, Bayside, Wis., Arlene and Chuck Ferch, Mandan, and Lucy Hugelen, Bismarck; two sons and daughters-in-law, Will and Linda, Mesa, Ariz., and Doug and Myra, Apache Junction, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Bertha Lein and Alice Vik. Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, Sam; two brothers, Valdemar and Bernard; and three sisters, Constance, Beatrice and Alice.

Maxine E. Buchholz
LEHR -- Maxine E. Buchholz, 51, Lehr died Aug. 27, 2000 at her home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Zion United Methodist Church, Lehr, with Rev. Ronn Wilke officiating. Interment wil be in Lehr City Cemetery. Maxine was born June 5, 1949 at Grand Forks, the daughter of Lloyd H. and Clara H. (Moe) Charron. She lived in several north central North Dakota communities as her father worked for the railroad. The family moved to Minot in 1960. Maxine attended and graduated from Minot High School in 1966 and went onto Minot State University, graduating in 1970 with a degree in education. Maxine taught at Mott for one year and in 1972 moved to Lehr. She taught there for 25 years, teaching elementary classes, Spanish and junior high math and served one year as principal before the school closed. Maxine was married to Henry Buchholz on August 11, 1973, at Minot. Following their marriage they returned to farm east of Lehr. Maxine also taught high school special education classes at Linton from 1997 to the spring of 2000. She retired due to ill health. Maxine was a member of Zion United Methodist Church at Lehr. She was very dedicated to the teaching profession and her students. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched. Survivors include her husband Henry Buchholz; her mother Clara Charron, Wishek and her father and mother-in-law, Luther and Hilda Buchholz, Lehr. She was preceded in death by her father, Lloyd and two brothers, Stanford and Dale. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek)

EDGELEY -- Mercia Fuher, 87, Edgeley, died Aug. 27, 2000 in a Jamestown hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at Wesley United Methodist Church, Edgeley. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Edgeley. Catherine Gruye
Catherine Gruye, 95, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, died Aug. 27, 2000 in the center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation begins Wednesday from 2-9 p.m. at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a parish vigil at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. Visitation continues Thursday at the church one hour prior to services at the church. Catherine, the daughter of William H. and Anna Maria (Billsborough) Vallancy was born Nov. 29, 1904 in Mandan. She was raised and educated in Mandan graduating from St. Catherine's College in St. Paul, Minn. She married Francis L. Gruye in July of 1932 in Graceville, Minn. Catherine worked for a bank in Minneapolis moving to Mandan in 1933, where she worked at Vallancy Hardware which was purchased from her parents. She was a member of Christ the King Parish, American Legion Auxiliary and Fortnightly Club. She is survived by one sister-in-law, Helen Jolly, Indio, Calif.; many cousins and a special friend, Betty Weinhandl, Mandan. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Francis, who died on March 22, 1974. (Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan)

Genevieve A. Gutknecht
Genevieve A. Gutknecht, 69, Minot, died Aug. 26, 2000, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Ernie Hockett officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. Visitation will continue today until service time. Genevieve was born May 12, 1931, at Beulah, the daughter of Lester H. and Mildred (Pulver) Bowers. A graduate of Beulah High School, she worked at the Hazen hospital prior to her marriage to William Gutknecht on April 2, 1955. They lived in Hazen and Mandan before making their home in Minot in 1967. While living in Mandan, she was employed as a nurses aide at Mandan Hospital. She was active in the First Congregational Church in Minot. A day care provider for many years, she devoted her life to God and caring for her family. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Lona and Glenn Olson, Billings, Mont.; her sons and daughters-in-law, Kim and Jane, Washburn, and Kevin and Christie, Minot; her grandchildren, Heath and Leslie Olson, Hailey Olson, Cody, Bryce and Summer Gutknecht, and Bowen and Brea Gutknecht; one great-grandchild, Cody William Olson; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Darhl and Charlene Bowers, Delbert and Gloria Bowers, and Wallace and Judy Bowers; one sister and brother-in-law, Yvonne and Myron Bornemann; her special friend, Vi Ressler; and her faithful canine companion, Jingles. She was preceded in death by her husband, William, who died April 3, 1993; her parents; and her sister, Pearl Welk.

Laudie Hanel
DICKINSON -- Laudie Hanel, 86, Dickinson, died Aug. 25, 2000 in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT today at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dickinson. He is survived by his wife, Emma; two sons, Clarence and Wil, both of Dickinson; one daughter, Sharon Schwartz, Richardton; and 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Daniel Iron Road
CANNON BALL -- Daniel Iron Road, 34, Cherry Creek, S.D., and formerly of Cannon Ball, died Aug. 24, 2000 near Eagle Butte, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Cannon Ball Elementary School Gym. Further arrangements are pending with Kesling Funeral Home, Mobridge, S.D.

Margaret Jack
Margaret "Peg" Falk Jack, 77, Phoenix, Ariz., and formerly of Bismarck, died Aug. 25, 2000 at her home in Phoenix. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held today at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Prescott, Ariz., at 2 p.m. Margaret Louise Falk was born Feb. 12, 1923 in Decatur, Ill. Peg's parents names were Carl Lewis and Gladys Louise Falk. She married Thomas Burrowes Jack, Jr. on April 30, 1944 in Decatur. She had two brothers, two children, and one grandson. Peg was married 56 years. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Carl Willard Falk. The survivors are her brother, Don Burton and Jean Falk, Greensboro, N.C.; her husband, Thomas B. Jack Jr., Prescott, Ariz.; daughter, Martha Louise Jack, Richland, Wash.; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Jack III and Joanne Gail Jack and grandson, Alexander Thomas Jack of Dubuque, Iowa. Peg attended Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., and was a member of the Sigma Alpha Iota music sorority. Peg and Thomas moved to Bismarck in 1968 and lived here for 28 years. Peg was a member of PEO Chapter AA in Bismarck. She was an accompanist of the Bismarck Boys' Choir and was the organizer and treasurer of B.T.O. an investment club in Bismarck. She and her husband, Tom, joined the First Presbyterian Church of Bismarck in October 1964. She was an elder, active in Presbyterian Women's Circles, and directed the bell choir of the church. They moved to Prescott, Ariz. in 1992. They visited in the spring of 1998 for the dedication of the Jack Science Building at BSC. Along with her husband, she was nationally recognized as a benefactor to Bismarck State College. Her life long passion for music was expressed in community activities and service to her church in Decatur, LaGrange, Ill., Bismarck, and Prescott. She was a homemaker all of her life and her family was her main focus and interest in life. She was known as a compassionate and loving woman. In lieu of flowers, Peg would like any memorials received given to the Music Department of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Prescott, or Bismarck State College.

DICKINSON -- Edna Jurgens, 87, Dickinson, formerly of Taylor, died Aug. 28, 2000 in a DIckinson hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Wednesday, at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson. Burial will be in Immanuel Cemetery, rural Taylor. Peter F. Volk
Peter F. "Pete" Volk, a North Dakota pioneer, 88, aged 88, died Aug. 26, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. His funeral mass will be held at noon Wednesday, at Church of Saint Anne. Celebrating will be Father Edwin Wehner and Father Arnold Spain. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. tonight. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. The son of Frank and Barbara Feist Volk, he was born Sept. 14, 1911 and raised on the family homestead near Pretty Rock, Grant County, where he spent his boyhood years. He graduated from St. Mary's Central High School in 1931. He attended Valley City Teachers College, earning a teaching certificate. He taught grade school at a country school in Emmons County. On Dec. 26, 1935, he married Margaret Boehm in Mandan. In his early years, he was the city of Bismarck Athletic Director and the Athletic Director of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) for Burleigh County, and later, the Western half of North Dakota. During World War II, he worked in the defense industry in Portland, Ore. Following the war, he returned to Bismarck and became a partner in Bismarck Memorial, Inc. He remained co-owner until his retirement in 1981. He was a Burleigh County Commissioner and President of the Burleigh County Planning Commission. Throughout his life, he was active in sports, hunting and fishing. He was track coach at Saint Mary's High School; an outstanding fastpitch softball player; manager of the 1951 20th Century Sign Co. softball team, winning the Northern Regional tournament, qualifying for Nationals; basketball referee; Junior Legion and amateur baseball coach; and manager of the Bismarck Central League Allstars who played the Havana Cuban Giants Allstar team. In 1959, he was inducted into the North Dakota Amateur Softball Hall of Fame. As a National Director of the Izaak Walton League, in 1950-1953, he was instrumental in introducing wild turkeys into North Dakota. An accomplished horseman, he was President of the Bismarck Horse Club, and a charter member of the Bismarck Mounted Police. He served as a Mounted Police escort for Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. He was a member of the Church of Saint Anne, a 4th degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus, National Rifle Association, Greater North Dakota Association, N.D. Quarter Horse Association, Bismarck Chamber of Commerce, and a life member of Bismarck Elks Lodge. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret; sons and spouses, Ronald G. and Arlene, James F. and Cathie; his daughter, Bonnie and her husband, Hugh Sanders, daughter-in-law, Lenis Volk; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Adele Kontos, Minot, Agnes Hoenk, Overland Park, Kan., Ann Bichler, Peggy Dilger and Genna Pelham, all of Seattle, Wash. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Wayne; his great-grandchild, Bryan Nakonechny; two brothers, Anton and Leo; and three sisters, Clara Schneider, Emily Giese and Catherine Pflugrath. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Bismarck Area Catholic Education Foundation, 418 E. Rosser Ave., Bismarck. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Hilda E. Dahlgren
Hilda E. Dahlgren, 89, formerly of Bismarck, died July 29, 2000, in the Strasburg care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Brethren Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Allen Shaner officiating. Burial will be in Mission Cemetery, Wilton. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service. Hilda was born Feb. 6, 1911, in Wilton, the third child of John F. and Maria (Erickson) Dahlgren. She was raised and received her early education in the Wilton community. Hilda was a nature lover and very much interested in the environment. As a child she learned the names of native birds, native flowers, and trees and plants. This became a lifetime hobby. In the early 1940s there was an appeal by the state of North Dakota for teachers in the rural areas. Hilda responded to this appeal and took and passed the examination that was offered. She became certified as an elementary school teacher and she taught in rural schools in McLean County during the years 1941-1945. Hilda was interested in a business career and attended the Business School at the North Dakota State School of Science at Wahpeton, where she earned a certificate of proficiency in bookkeeping and business practice. Thereafter, she continued her college education in Chicago, where she attended and graduated from the junior college of North Park College. In 1950, after a trip to Europe with her father and sister, she sought employment in the Chicago area and worked for various firms as an accountant for 25 years. During those years she enhanced her education by attending evening classes offered in her field by Northwestern University at Evanston, Ill. During her residence in Chicago, she held membership in and was active int he various Covenant Churches of Chicago, where she sang in various church choirs. She also held membership in the Swedish Cultural Society of America (Chicago Affiliate); Professional Accountants Association of Chicago, Christian Business and Professional Women's Club; and for a time, Northwestern University Choral Group. In 1975, Hilda retired to Bismarck, where she resided until July of 1993. At that time she became a resident of Strasburg Nursing Home. During her retirement in Bismarck, Hilda continued her interests in birds, flowers, trees and nature. She was a member of the Garden Club and the Three Crown Swedish Club. Hilda had three sisters and two brothers. Two sisters, Edla and Emmy are deceased, as is her brother, Helmer. She is survived by one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Donald Hartman, Ellensburg, Wash.; and one brother and sister-in-law, John and Ruby Dahlgren, Burbank, Calif.
