Ada Dressler
Ada Kranich Dressler, Rancho Murieta, Calif., died Aug. 20, 2000, in a Sacramento, Calif. hospital. Ada was born Jan. 10, 1927, in Elgin. She married Lou Dressler on Nov. 24, 1946. A memorial service will be held in Rancho Murieta today.
Ida M. Foster
Ida M. Friesz Wetzstein Foster of Cleveland, Texas, formerly of North Dakota, passed away at her home July 30, 2000, surrounded by her family, after a long battle with cancer. She was layed to rest at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Cleveland on Aug. 2, 2000. Ida was born in North Dakota on June 14, 1933. She is survived by her husband, Charles; her five children, Cheryl Wetzstein and Cindy Grey, both of North Dakota, Connie Hass and her spouse, Ed, Texas, Clint Wetzstein and his spouse, Linda, California, and Carol Berger and her spouse, Bernie, North Dakota; 12 grandchildren, Scott, John, Chris, Tim, Alisha, Grant, Rick, Colton, Kristin, Kayla, Jamie and Corey; two great-grandchildren, Ashton and Alyssa; two sisters, Alice, Montana, and Esther, North Dakota; and seven stepchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Val and Margarette Friesz; her sister and brother, Joann and John; and her grandson, Shane Berger. Ida was a committed member of the community, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. An inspiration to her family and friends. There is no way to list the many deeds of her generosity, kindness and instances of her gifts. She will be dearly missed and remembered in the hearts and minds of all who were blessed to be touched by her life. "To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die."

GLADSTONE -- Jack Lefor, 69, Gladstone, died Aug. 21, 2000, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Thursday at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, Lefor, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Regina; three daughters, Renae Twigg, Detroit Lakes, Minn., Roberta Steier, Reeder, and Delores Chamberlain, Dickinson; four sons, Jack, Dickinson, and Russell, Arlen and Ryan, all of Gladstone; one sister, Kathleen Gion, Regent; and 11 grandchildren. Clara Mattson
ALAMO -- Clara Mattson, 92, formerly of Alamo, died Aug. 20, 2000, in a Billings, Mont. care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church, Alamo, with burial in Alamo Cemetery. She is survived by one sister, Ellen Tucker, California; one daughter, Joy Mitchell, Shepherd, Mont.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. (Everson Funeral Home, Williston)
Vernon John Rausch
Vernon John Rausch, 63, 14537 Glendale Ave. S.E., Prior Lake, Minn. 55732, died peacefully at his home on Aug. 21, 2000, following an illness with cancer and Parkinson's Disease. He was born May 27, 1937, in Dickinson, and grew up in Bismarck. Vernon graduated from St. Mary's High School, Bismarck, in 1955, John's University in Minnesota in 1959, and the University of North Dakota Law School in 1964. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tony "A.P." and Minnie Rausch, Bismarck. He is survived by his wife, Susan J. Rausch; his children, John "J.R." Rausch, Mary Rausch Ward, Mark Rausch, Ann Rausch Montalvo; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mildred Gallagher, Mandan, Audrey and Ed Behrendt, and Karen and Al Wolf; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Maggie Rausch, Tom and Twylla, all of Bismarck; and a sister, Mary Ann Rausch, Denver. He served as an administrative law judge for 33 years for the U.S. Department of the Interior Office of Hearings and Appeals until his medical retirement in September 1998. His work required occasional visits to Indian reservations in North Dakota and the surrounding states as a probate judge for Indian people. He is past president of the Federal Bar Association. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters, and St. Michael's Church of Prior Lake, where he was a member of the choir. Vern valued time spent at family reunions, boating and skiing with his children, traveling and sharing stories with family and friends. An evening memorial will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Ballard-Sunder Funeral Home, 4565 Pleasant Street in Prior Lake; (952) 447-2633. The funeral mass will begin at 11 a.m. Friday with a gathering one hour prior at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 16311 Duluth Avenue, Prior Lake, Minn. Memorials may be made in his honor to the Rausch Family Scholarship Fund at St. Mary's Central High School, Bismarck.

Lydia Walth
HEBRON -- Lydia Walth, 84, Hebron, died Aug. 21, 2000, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Hebron, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at Spangelo's Funeral Home, Hebron, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A prayer service will begin at 7:30 tonight. Lydia Sailer was born Dec. 19, 1915, near Antelope, the daughter of Christ and Emila (Schrenk) Sailer. She was raised and educated near Antelope. She helped on the family farm until her marriage. On Jan. 6, 1935, she married John Walth at the Salem Evangelical Church. They were longtime farmers near Richardton. In 1962 they retired and moved into Hebron, where she has resided since. John died May 29, 1983. Lydia enjoyed baking and gardening, quilting and embroidery work. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hebron. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Alvin and Jeannine, Bismarck, and Clarence and Dolly, Richardton; one daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Keith Kraenzel, Dickinson; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers; and two sisters.

Anna Mary Deisz
LINTON -- Anna Mary Deisz, 98, formerly of Linton, died Aug. 22, 2000 in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton, with the Revs. John Kuhn and Bruce Krebs officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation begins Friday from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. at the funeral home with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Visitation on Saturday will be one hour before the time of service at the church. Anna Mary Deisz was born May 25, 1902 on a farm near Hillsview, S.D., the daughter of Lawrence and Elizabeth (Imberi) Malsom. She attended a rural school and also attended St. Benedicts School in Strasburg. On Oct. 30, 1922, she married Lorenz Deisz at Linton. They made their home on a farm west of Linton until 1948, when they moved to Billings, Mont. In 1950, they returned to Linton. Her husband died on Sept. 27, 1982 and shortly thereafter, Anna Mary moved to the Crescent Manor in Bismarck. In June of 2000, she became a resident of Missouri Slope Luthearn Care Center. Anna Mary loved spending time with her family and the time spent with her grandchildren was especially precious to her. Anna Mary always looked forward to Saturdays with her granddaughter, Charlene, and her husband, Ken Magstadt, came to apartment for the weekly "Gramma Day." Charlene and Ken would have lunch with Anna Mary, would do her shopping for her and took care of the necessary little odds and ends. Anna Mary did lots of sewing; she made beautiful drapes and clothes. She loved to play cards and Pinochle was her favorite card game. Grateful to have shared her life are her two sons and daughters-in-law, Matt and Freida Deisz, Sun City, Ariz., Mike and Angie Deisz, Bismarck; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Betty Gabriel, Bismarck, Tillie and Wilbert Rath, Wishek, Katie and Joe Hager, Bismarck, and Mary and Ray Wagner, Rapid City, S.D.; 25 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren, seven great-great-grandchildren and five step-great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Anna Mary was preceded in death by an infant son; a three year old daughter; three sisters and eight brothers; a daughter-in-law, Rose Deisz, and a granddaughter-in-law, Veronica Deisz. Norma Dye, 68, Ocean Springs, Miss., died Aug. 22, 2000 in Ocean Springs. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at at Christus Victor Lutheran Church, Ocean Springs, where friends may call an hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Biloxi National Cemetery. Norma was born in Mandan and has been a resident of Ocean Springs since 1969. She was a member of Christus Victor Lutheran Church. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She is survived by her husband, Clifford; one daughter, Carol Dye, Austin, Texas; one son, Bruce, Ocean Springs; three sisters, Mrs. Theodore (Lorene) Siegel, Casper, Wyo., Mrs. E.L. (Dorothy) DeBattista, Milwaukee, Wis., Alice Hagerott, Bismarck; three brothers, Allan G. Hagerott, Casper, Wyo., Donald Hagerott, Spokane, Wash., and George Hagerott, Mandan; one granddaughter, Bristine Dye, Ocean Springs, and one grandson, Bryce Dye, Ocean Springs; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Eleanor Meke Hagerott, and a nephew. John Frederick Kiesel
NEW SALEM -- John Frederick "Fritz" Kiesel, 87, New Salem, died Aug. 21, 2000 in the New Salem nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Friday, at Peace Church, New Salem, with the Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be in Peace Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. today at Elm Crest Nursing Home and after 3 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, New Salem. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church. Fred "Fritz" Kiesel was born on March 5, 1913, three miles west of New Salem, the son of Karl and Katherine (Wacther) Kiesel. They youngest of seven children, he grew up on the farm and loved the outdoor life. He worked on the farm for many years and later worked for Wilmer Conitz, Oestreich Brothers of Hannover, Ed Hoeverman and Ted Benishek. In later years, he was employed by Elm Crest, where he took pride in one of his jobs which was raising and lowering the American Flag every day, which he continued even after he became a resident there 10 years ago. He loved to read when he was younger, but when asked he always said he only loved to work. A quiet and solitary man, he left the state only once to go to Montana. He is survived by his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Kiesel, Emma Reineke, Bertha Dawson, Caroline Kiesel and his brothers, Karl and Bill. Arthur C. Ridley
DEVILS LAKE -- Arthur C. Ridley, 84, Devils Lake and formerly of Crary, died Aug. 22, 2000 in the Devils Lake hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake, with the Rev. Jeffrey L. Wald officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Gilbertson Funeral Home on Friday from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. with a rosary and scripture service at 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the services at the church. Arthur C. Ridley was born on June 28, 1916 at Crary, the son of Harry and Anna Meggitt Ridley. He was raised and educated at Southam. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to North Dakota. He was united in marriage to Marie Burkhard on March 4, 1946 in Devils Lake. They established their home in Devils Lake, moving to Crary in 1946. They lived there unilt moving into Devils Lake in 1979, where they have since lived. Arthur worked for the Ramsey County Highway Department for a number of years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Crary, St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake, and the Devils Lake Eagles Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Marie; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Donald Mattheis, Dickinson, and Jean and Robert Blair, Neche; three sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Yolanda, and Jim and Rosemary, all of Bismarck, and John and Margaret, Dickinson; 15 grandchildren and nine great-granddaughters; one sister, Dorothy Overgaard, Fort Meyers, Fla.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Rose Schmidt
Rose Schmidt, Mandan, 100 1/2 years old, died Aug. 22, 2000 in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation begins from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughters and St. Joseph Circle rosary will be said at 4 p.m., and a Christian Mothers' Rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Rose Schmidt, the daughter of Anton and Elizabeth (Schmidt) Franck was born on Feb. 7, 1900 in Odessa, Russia. Rose was the oldest of 11 children who came to the United States in 1903 with her parents, residing at Fallon. On May 31, 1920, she married Christ F. Schmidt. They farmed in the Fallon area until 1954, when they moved to Mandan. After moving to Mandan, she worked at Tony's Cafe until she retired in 1971. Christ died in 1991, after sharing more than 70 years of marriage. Rose has been a resident of Medcenter One Care Center since 1991. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Verna Kary, Mandan, and Frances (John) Geiger, Mandan, and Betty (Paul) Dulski, Perham, Minn.; 15 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe (Ann) Franck, Sidney, Mont., and Frank (Dorothy) Franck, Yucca Valley, Calif.; one sister, Mary Schmidt, Mandan; and one brother-in-law, Stanley Pfau, San Francisco, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and one daughter, Marge Haas; three sons-in-law, John and Joe Kary and Reuben Haas; one grandson, Donald Gamage; five brothers, Ralph, Marcus, Tom, Steve and Leo; one brother-in-law, Tom Schmidt; and two sisters, Christine Pfau and (infant) Eva Marie. Roy W. Hanning
UNDERWOOD -- Roy W. Hanning, 89, Underwood, formerly of Jamestown, died Aug. 25, 2000, in the Underwood nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, with the Revs. Jack Eichhorst and Curtis Hanson officiating. Burial will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon-8 p.m. Tuesday at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Roy William Hanning was born Dec. 15, 1910, at Preston, Minn., to Carl and Zoe Ella (Pickett) Hanning. He graduated from Preston High School in 1929. He worked at various jobs; reading meters for the Root River Power Co. in the village of Preston, caretaker of the local golf course, and he started a small berry farm. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Jan. 17, 1942 to Oct. 17, 1945. He trained at Paine Field at Everett, Wash., and was sent overseas and served in North Africa and Southern Italy. After his discharge he returned to his home at Preston. He moved to Jamestown on Jan. 15, 1947, and worked in the shoe store business with his uncle, Theo Hanning. After the store was sold in 1952, Roy began farming south of Jamestown. He married Casteneda C. Hofer on Sept. 6, 1955, at Turtle Lake. They made their home in Jamestown and Roy continued to be a small grain farmer south of Jamestown until he retired in 1974. Roy was considered "Mr. Fix-it" and enjoyed repairing radios and televisions. He also enjoyed his hobby of photography. He was a long-time member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Jamestown, where he had served on the church council for two terms. He was also a member of the Jamestown Citizens Patrol, and had served as their secretary in 1982. He recently had become a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church at Turtle Lake. On Sept. 11, 1996, he became a resident of the Central Dakota Nursing Home at Jamestown, and then moved to the Prairieview Nursing Home at Underwood on Oct. 14, 1997. He is survived by his wife, Casteneda; one sister-in-law, Lavina Hofer, Sacramento, Calif.; one brother-in-law, Marvin Hofer and his wife, Clarice, Turtle Lake; three nieces and their husbands, Gayle and Tom Redmond, Connie and Bruce Neumiller, and Karen and Les Lelm, all of Turtle Lake; and five grand-nieces and grand-nephews, Sonja Redmond, Mitchel and Carmen Neumiller, and Ryan and Brittany Lelm.
