DICKINSON --ÊSherry L. Mikkelsen, 44, Dickinson, died of cancer, Jan. 3, 2000, at her home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Thursday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.

Samuel Henke
KULM -- Samuel D. Henke, 87, Kulm, died Jan. 3, 2000, in the Ashley hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church, Kulm, with burial in the church cemetery.

He is survived by three daughters, Marcella Ogren, Kulm, Arlene Van Galder, Sedalia, Mo., and Mercedes Parker, Ann Arbor, Mich.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Alma Hust, Laurel, Mont. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Kulm)

Mildred Michel
Mildred Michel, 89, Bismarck, died Jan. 4, 2000, in the Mandan care center. Arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Melvin Brandt
Melvin Brandt, 73, 2507 N. Sixth St., died of cancer, Jan. 3, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jeff Tengesdal officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services.

Melvin Jacob Brandt was born Feb. 8, 1926, in Albion, Neb., to Carl and Anna Brandt. He was raised on the farm near Albion and graduated as valedictorian from Albion High School in 1943. He began working for the Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service in Albion on Jan. 1, 1948. Mel married Marian Rasmussen, Aug. 6, 1950, at Emmaus Lutheran church in Kennard, Neb. In 1958 he transferred to the state office in Lincoln, Neb. Then, in 1963 he moved to the state office here in Bismarck. At the time of his retirement in 1982, he held the position of assistant state administrative officer. He was the treasurer of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for 29 years. Since his retirement, he has been involved in various volunteer work, including Summer of Safety, senior health insurance counseling, and was also a senior tax aid volunteer. He was active in N.A.R.F.E.

Mel is survived by his wife, Marian; his daughter, Teri; his son-in-law, Allen Koppy and their children, B.J., Katy and Emily, all of Bismarck; a daughter-in-law and son-in-law, Mary and Kevin Kubitz, and their children, Tom, Corey and Jimm, Vergas, Minn.; one brother and sister-in-law, Irvin and Shirley Brandt, Wayne, Neb.; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Bob Hadan, San Juan, Texas; a brother-in-law and his wife, Maynard and Delores Rasmussen, Aurora, Colo.; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Myra and Doug Herbster, Payson, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Tim.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Good Shepherd Lutheran church or Shiloh Christian School.

Mary Bosch
HALLIDAY --ÊMary T. Bosch, 84, Halliday, died Jan. 3, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Friday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Halliday. Further arrangements are pending at Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Manfred Bymoen
NEW ROCKFORD --ÊManfred Bymoen, 91, New Rockford, died Jan. 3, 2000 in the New Rockford care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, New Rockford, with burial in Prairie Home Cemetery, New Rockford.

He is survived by his wife, Anna; one son, David, New Rockford; one daughter, Joelyn Scriba, Bemidji, Minn.; and two grandchildren. (Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford)

Mae Blank
NEW SALEM --ÊMae Blank, 96, New Salem, died Dec. 15, 1999. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. MST Friday at Church of St. Pius V, New Salem, with the Rev. David Zimmer officiating. Burial will be in Peace Cemetery, New Salem.

There will be a parish prayer service and rosary at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Mae was born May 21, 1903, at Oriska, the daughter of John and Catherine (Waldorf) Kretchmer. She received her early education at Oriska and the Sacred Heart Academy in Fargo, and graduated from Valley City High School and Valley City State College with refresher courses taken at Bismarck State College and the University of Minnesota. She taught school for 27 years in Barnes, Richland, Oliver and Morton counties. She retired from teaching in 1973, at which time the Plainsmen, New Salem High School's yearbook was dedicated to her with the inscription "Compassion, devotion, tenderness, love and a sense of humor are united in her Person!"

Mae married George F. Blank on Oct. 11, 1939, in Valley City. George died on Oct. 1, 1976. She was active in church, civic and community affairs, serving as Morton County chairman of the Sister Kenny Foundation, the Morton County Red Cross, the Legion Auxiliary (serving as Department Americanism Chairman), St. Pius Christian Mothers, CCD instructor and coordinator, and organist and choir director at St. Pius Church for over 30 years. Much of the music was in Latin Gregorian style, which she preferred and enjoyed. In 1978 she was chosen as "Woman of the Year" by the Jayceettes and also served on the First Board of Directors at Elm Crest Manor.

She leaves to mourn her daughter-in-law, Linda (Ellis) Blank, West Yellowstone, Mont.; three grandchildren, Kris Marie and her husband, Mike Opprecbt, Woodinville, Wash., Russell Scott Blank and his wife, Shelly, Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, and Jeffrey Philip Blank and his special friend, Leann, Portland, Ore.; and five great-grandchildren, Austin Charles, Kady MaCall and Philip Richard Blank, and Eric Philip and Jonathan Neil Opprecbt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George F. and her son, Philip George, who died Jan. 7, 1998. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Joseph Ferderer
NEW SALEM -- Joseph Ferderer, 73, New Salem, died Jan. 4, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

Helen Olson
NEW SALEM --ÊHelen Olson, 75, New Salem, died Jan. 3, 2000, in the New Salem nursing home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Boelter Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Schauer officiating. Burial will be in Sunne Lutheran Church Cemetery, Wilton-Regan.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

She was born Jan. 29, 1924, in Goodrich, Minn., the daughter of Henry and Ann (Savage) Kriel. She was raised and educated in Goodrich. Following her high school graduation she worked as a dental hygenist in Thief River Falls, Minn. Helen married Raymond O. Olson in 1944 in Thief River Falls. In the 1980s, Helen moved to St. Cloud, Minn. and worked at the senior center where she enjoyed playing cards and dancing.

She came to North Dakota in 1998.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Chris, Wilton; one daughter, LuWana, California; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her special friend, Earl Brezinski, Sartell, Minn.; one sister, Mary Lou Smith, Florida; and one brother, Ralph Kriel, Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth and Norman.

Gerald Silk
FORT YATES -- Gerald T. "Red" Silk, 41, Fort Yates, died Jan. 3, 2000, in Fort Yates. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturdayat St. Peter's Catholic Church, Fort Yates, with the Rev. William Cosgrove officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at the church.

Red was born Sept. 4, 1958, at Fort Yates, to Gerald McLaughlin and Shirley A. Morton. He was raised and educated in Fort Yates. He worked on the construction of Prairie Knights Casino, and delivered meals for the Nutrition for the Elderly in Fort Yates.

He loved fishing, gardening and bingo, and liked to repair things from appliances to lawn mowers.

He is survived by his mother, Shirley Morton; his special companion, Joette Agard; two daughters, Deanna Star, Seattle, and Jera Silk, Fort Yates; two stepdaughters, Melanie and Jamie Agard, Fort Yates; four step-grandchildren, Saunders and baby girl Young Bird, and Reanna and Ryleigh Bald Eagle; one sister, Rochelle Deschwanden, Rocklin, Calif.; three brothers, Robert M. Schonberger, Fort Yates, Keith Schonberger, Mandan, and John Schonberger, Virginia Beach, Va.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Red was preceded in death by his father. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

David Keller
David A. Keller, 45, Mandan, died Jan. 2, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at noon Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Robert Feeney officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a prayer service and rosary will be held at 7 tonight. Visitation will continue at the funeral home from 9-11 a.m. Thursday. There will be no visitation at the church.

Dave was born Nov. 9, 1954, in Linton, the son of Leo and Luella (Jochim) Keller. He was raised in Strasburg, graduating from Emmons Central High School in 1972, and earned a football scholarship to the Wahpeton State School of Science, where he studied mechanics and auto body repair. He moved to the Bismarck-Mandan area where he owned A-1 Body Shop and later A-1 Auto Sales and Repair. Dave often said the happiest day of his life was when he married Rhonda Wetzel on May 3, 1975, in Glen Ullin.

He loved hunting, shooting sporting clays, four-wheeling, camping and playing pinochle with his friends. He enjoyed being around people and was a loving husband and a devoted father. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Dave is survived by his wife, Rhonda; his daughters, Melissa and her fiance, Tim Ulberg, and Andrea, all of Mandan; his parents, Leo and Luella, Bismarck; his sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Bob Gefre, Bismarck; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Leo and Bert, Menoken, Dan and Connie, Dickinson, Wayne and Nellie, Bismarck, and Darnell, Bismarck; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Albert Simpfenderfer
Albert Simpfenderfer, 87, Buffalo, Wyo., and formerly of Mandan, died Jan. 4, 2000 in a Buffalo care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Saturday, at Adams Funeral Home Chapel, Buffalo. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery, Buffalo.

He is survived by one son, Wilbert, Bismarck; one daughter, LaVonne Gift, Buffalo; two brothers, Carl, Lodi, Calif., and John, Bismarck; and seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. (Adams Funeral Home, Buffalo)

Arthur Burman
Arthur Burman, 73, West Branch, Iowa, and formerly of Bismarck, died Jan. 3, 2000 in an Iowa City hospital. Private family services will be held at a later date.

He is survived by his partner, Linda Kopping, West Branch; three daughters, Blythe Engen, Arvada, Colo., Kip Freels, Brookings, Ore., and Nora Kopping, West Branch; one son, Fane Burman, Aztec, N.M.; four grandchildren. (Lensing Funeral and Cremation Services, Iowa City)

Bertha Knutson
FESSENDEN -- Bertha Knutson, 90, Fessenden, died Jan. 4, 2000 in a Harvey nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at First Lutheran Church, Fessenden, with burial in Hillside Cemetery, Fessenden.

She is survived by three daughters, Helen Ewals, Rancho Mirage, Calif., Darlene Dietz, Fessenden, and Geri Lies, Detroit Lakes, Minn.; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Alvena Severson, Fessenden, Lora Terbest and Virginia Overby, both of Westminster, Calif., and Lillian Cossette, Quilcene, Wash.; and one brother, Fred Schmidt, Minot. Clara Lien
STEELE -- Clara Lien, 95, Steele, died Jan. 4, 2000 in the Steele care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Steele, with the Rev. Norman Beighley officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Steele.

Visitation will be held from 3-9 p.m. today, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Clara was born on Feb. 5, 1904 in Rothsay, Minn., the daughter of Bernhard and Othea (Pedersen) Johnson. She was raised and educated in Kidder County. She married Andreas Lien on Dec. 12, 1930 in Steele. Andreas died in November 1966. She was an avid fisherman until she could no longer reel that big one in during her eighties. She loved playing cards and going to bingo. Clara took pride in her family and friends and made her children proud to call her "Mom."

Clara is survived by her daughter, LaVerne Gertz, Mandan; her son and daughter-in-law, DeWayne and Lynn, Alliance, Neb.; one son-in-law, Keith Layton, Casper, Wyo.; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Andreas; one daughter, LaVonne Layton; one son and daughter-in-law, Melford and Carlene; one son-in-law, Don Gertz; and four sisters and three brothers. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)
