Mary Shortt
Mary Alice Shortt, 95, Mandan, died Dec. 30, 1999 in a Mandan care center. Services and interment will be held at Perryville, Mo., on Friday, January 7, 2000.
Mary Alice Horton was born in New Haven, Conn., on Dec. 19, 1904. In 1915, she was adopted by her maternal aunt and uncle, Mary Welles and Herbert Cushing Tolman, and spent her young life in Nashville, Tenn. She was educated at Peabody College and subsequently taught in schools in the Nashville, Tenn., area and at New Haven, Conn.
She married Stuart Shortt at New Haven on June 7, 1930. Over they years they resided in Tennessee, Virginia, Illinois and Missouri; retiring at Perryville, Mo., in the 1960's. She had made her home in Mandan for the past few years.
Mary Alice was a highly accomplished artist and an avid gardener and horticulturist. She often gave informational talks at garden clubs. Gorwing orchids was one of her favorite hobbies. She was a descendant of John Alden and also Thomas Welles, first governor of Connecticut. She was a member of the DAR and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Perryville.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Stuart and Elizabeth Shortt, Mandan; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Welles Harris, in 1981, and her husband, Stuart in 1995. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and Young Funeral Chapel, Perryville, Mo.)

Phyliss Baudien, 69, Mandan, died Jan. 3, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.
Richard Skraba
PICK CITY -- Richard Skraba, 67, Pick City, and formerly of Greaney, Minn., died Jan. 2, 2000 in a Cook, Minn., hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Cook. Burial will be in St. Bridget's Cemetery, Greaney.
He is survived by his wife, Marie; three sons, Richard "Rick," Pick City, Mike, Cook, Minn., and Brad, Pick City; one daughter, Karla Arvila, Cook, Minn.; two brothers, Dennis Skraba, Irmo, S.C., and Donald Skraba, Greaney; and three grandchildren. (Mlaker Funeral Home, Cook)
Rose Barnhardt
Rose Barnhardt, 95, Mandan, died Jan. 3, 2000 in a Mandan nursing home. Arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.
Rose Schafer
WATFORD CITY -- Rose Schafer, 89, Watford City, died Dec. 31, 1999 at her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at First Lutheran Church, Watford City, with the Rev. Thomas Stenzel officiating. Burial will be in Schafer Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. today, at Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Rose Goetz was born April 6, 1910 in Akaska, S.D., the daughter of Johan and Christiana (Unruh) Goetz, the 9th of 11 children. Her family moved to Java, S.D. where she attended school.
She was united in marriage to Gerhart "Butch" Schafer on May 22, 1928. Rose and Butch farmed and worked in the grocery business for many years, living in Selby, S.D., Fort Yates, Hazelton and moved to Mott in March of 1942. They manage the Co-Op Store in Mott from 1944 until 1955. From there they lived in Colorado for two years and moved to Watford City in June of 1957, where they started Schafer Super Valu. Rose retired from the grocery business in 1983. Gerhart "Butch" Schafer preceded Rose in death at Watford City on Aug. 30, 1982. She continued living in Watford City until the time of her death.
Rose was a member of First Lutheran Church in Watford City and the North Dakota Retail Grocers Association. She enjoyed education and loved doing crossword puzzles, reading poetry, Shakespeare, Poe, Tennyson, and other famous poets and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a very loving and caring grandmother.
Rose is survived by her son, Delbert and his wife, Delores, Watford City; three granddaughters, Denae Hoffmann and her husband, David, Watford City, Dawn Yancey, Bismarck, and Tracy Yoder and her husband, Steve, Massillon, Ohio; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Butch in 1982; six brothers and four sisters. (Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City)
Alma Carr
Alma Carr, 93, Washburn, died Jan. 4, 2000, in a Bismarck nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn.
Pauline Solum
Pauline J. Solum, 74, Bismarck, died Jan. 3, 2000, at her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, where a rosary and prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.
Pauline was born Feb. 9, 1925, in Mandan, to Jacob and Clara (Wetsch) Berger. She married Vernon Solum, Dec. 17, 1945, in Mandan. Pauline loved bowling, crocheting and especially loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, Vern, to various destinations throughout the United States.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Vern; one son and daughter-in-law, Vernon E. Jr. and Sharon, Fargo; four daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Dennis Daniel, Mandan, Jacqulyn and Michael, Hennessy, Williston, Jocelyn and William Schneider, Mandan, and Rosalyn and Steven Norstedt, Bismarck; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Gratz, Valley City, and Rose Cermak, Mandan; and one brother, Phil Berger, Washington.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sisters.
The family prefers memorials to St. Alexius Hospice program.
Leo Sjolseth
Leo Sjolseth, 77, went to be with our Lord and Savior on Jan. 1, 2000. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Twin Valley, Minn.
Visitation will be held one hour before services.
Leo was born April 4, 1922, to Mabel Evenson) and Louis Sjolseth. He was raised and educated in Twin Valley. He was married to Vivian Thompson from 1947-1967. They lived in Minot, raising six children. He moved to Billings and lived there for several years before returning to Minot where he met and married Virginia Hileman.
Leo sold insurance for many years in the Minot area. His passions in life were politics and automobiles. He lived his life to the fullest as much as possible.
He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving companion, Virginia; six children, Diane Weros, Minot, Donald Sjolseth, Las Vegas, Deborah Dahl, Palmer, Ark., Dean Sjolseth, Billings, Mont., Denise Hellman, Palmer, Ark., and DelRay Perkins, Ironton, Minn.; two brothers, John, Portland, Ore., and Archie, New Brighton, Minn.; one sister, Marlis Kappas, Ada, Minn.; five stepchildren, Steven Hileman, Mandan, Penny Grieme, Mandan, Christopher Hileman, Amarillo, Texas, Russell Hileman, Bismarck, and Robert Hileman, Fargo; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Mable Sjolseth; and his sister, Helen Dahlen.

GARRISON --ÊAllen N. Thompson, 80, Garrison, died Jan. 4, 2000, in Garrison. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Garrison, with burial in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred; two sons, Gary, Stillwater, Minn., and Wayne, Max; three daughters, Sharon Neiss, Minot, Cynthia Baker, Temple, Texas, and Patti Gardner, Wichita Falls, Texas; two brothers, Herbert, Sacramento, Calif., and Elmo, Sugarland, Texas; three sisters, Lorraine Kerzman, Kalispell, Mont., Alice Nelson, Colestrip, Mont., and Blanche Zenz, Columbia Falls, Mont.; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
