Dallas C. Henke
Dallas C. Henke, 76, Marco Island, Fla., died March 14, 2000, in a Chapel Hill, N.C., hospital following surgery for esophageal cancer. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Marco Presbyterian Church, 875 Elkan Circle, Marco Island, Fla., with Dr. Bruce Fiol officiating. Dallas and Beverly attended this church for 10 years. A memorial service will also be held at 1 p.m. May 6 at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Irvin Bruenjes officiating. He will be buried with full military honors at Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation begins one hour prior to the service. Dallas Charles Henke was born June 30, 1923, in New Salem, the son of Arthur D. and Margaret (Bauer) Henke. In March 1943, he was inducted into military service and fought in the European Theater during World War II. He is a veteran of 110 days on the front line and the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged Christmas Eve 1945 at Newport News, Va. Dallas graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1948 with a bachelor of science in accounting. His first position following graduation was at the North Dakota Highway Department. His accomplishments there led him to a job with the Federal Highway Department, in the Bureau of Federal Roads, where he rose to the position of deputy executive officer for region three in Hagerstown, Md. He was promoted to senior executive officer for region three when he moved to Baltimore. Dallas received a Presidential Citation for his innovative accounting work while serving in the Bureau of Federal Roads. In 1983 he retired to Marco Island, where he lived until his recent illness. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Beverly (Kruger), Marco Island; his son, David C., Chapel Hill; his two daughters, Gayle Williams, Satellite Beach, Fla., and Jill Pacini, Hobe Sound, Fla.; his six grandchildren, Andrea and Joseph Pacini, Hobe Sound, Jeremy and Amanda Williams, Satellite Beach, and Anna and David M., Chapel Hill; his brother, Dr. Warren Henke, Bismarck; and his nephew, Russell "Rusty" Kruger, Mandan. Clarence R. Moyer
Clarence R. Moyer, 78, Mandan, died April 20, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. The celebration of Clarence's life will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mandan United Methodist Church, 211 Second Ave. N.W., with the Rev. Mark Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery, with military honors provided by the Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. today with a prayer service at 7 tonight and continues from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, all at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. Clarence was born Dec. 20, 1922, in Brule, Neb., the son of Enos J. and Anna Mary (Sytsma) Moyer. He was raised in a sod house on a Wyoming homestead 45 miles south of New Castle. He graduated from high school in 1940 and went to welding school in Wichita, Kan., and worked at an aircraft factory there until he entered the Army in February 1944. He served in the Asiatic and Pacific theaters and was honorably discharged in 1946. Returning home to New Castle, he worked at the refinery for eight years until moving to Mandan in 1954. Clarence worked at the new Standard Oil Refinery for 32 years, retiring in 1985 as a supervisor. Clarence was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapshooter. He enjoyed the many hours spent with family and friends at trapshoots or sitting around the kitchen table at home. He was a member of the Mandan United Methodist Church, the Mandan American Legion for 40 years, Bismarck-Mandan Elks for 33 years, the Mandan Masonic Lodge No. 8, Capitol City Gun Club and the American Trap Shooting Association. He will be remembered with love by all those who shared his life, including his wife, Ruth M.; three sons and daughters-in-law, A. Pete and Jane, Mandan, Dennis B. and Rhonda, Las Vegas, and Jeffrey P. and Meg, Oceanside, Calif.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Pat Thomas, Las Vegas, Micky and Vince Wienk, Spearfish, S.D., and Sue and Larry Wetsch, Mandan; 14 grandchildren, Theresa, Lisa and Brandy Thomas, Cody and Rusty Wienk, Byron J., Kristy and Nancy Wetsch, Emily and Megan Moyer, Adam, Philip and Paul Moyer, and Shannon and Michael Moyer; three great-grandchildren and his add-a-boy, Ron Otto, and his wife, Linda. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Bis-marck Ronald McDonald House.

DICKINSON -- Michael R. Gerber, 43, Dickinson, and formerly of Jamestown, died April 23, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Walter Schott officiating. Visitation will be held from 1-8 p.m. today and will continue until the service at the funeral home. Michael was born on April 1, 1957 in Bismarck. He grew up and attended school in Napoleon, graduating from Napoleon High School in 1976. He married Lugene Fischer on July 23, 1980 in Bismarck. He worked for Soo Line Railroad for four years in Bismarck. Michael then attended Lake Community College in Devils Lake, graduating with an associates degree in Civil Engineering. He has worked for Midwest Testing at Jamestown and Dickinson since 1984 as manager until his death. He enjoyed the outdoors which included hunting, fishing and rock collecting. He also enjoyed antiquing, collecting and finishing antique furniture. But most of all, he adored his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Lugene; one son, Jesie; one daughter, Jenifer; three grandchildren, Emma, Caitlin and Casey, all of Dickinson; one sister and brother-in-law, Rita and David Blocker, Mohall; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dennis and Brenda Gerber, Redfield, S.D., and Jessie and Karen Gerber, Anchorage, Alaska; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur; one brother, Kevin and one nephew, Matthew. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

She is survived by her children, Eugene, Fayetteville, Ga., and Luella Grabau, Minot; and three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Renee Agnes Hillyer
Renee Agnes Hillyer, 78, Apple Valley, Minn., died April 23, 2000 in an Apple Valley care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church the day of the service. Renee Enders was born Aug. 22, 1923 to Charles and Beatrice Enders in Bismarck. She attended St. Mary's Central High School and the University of Mary. She married Bernard Hillyer. She lived in Bismarck most of her life, but also in Iowa, Owatonna, Minn., and Apple Valley. She was a teacher and principal at the Cathedral school in Bismarck. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Michael Sebold, California, and Mary Kate and Darrin Nelson, Rosemount, Minn.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bernie and Linda Hillyer, and Paul and Janie Hillyer, Owatonna; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Margaret McDowell
Margaret McDowell, 77, Bismarck, and Scottsdale, Ariz., died April 18, 2000 in Scottsdale. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Art Scanson and Rick Fossum officiating. Margaret Hendrickson was born on Jan. 13, 1923, the daughter of John S. and Sadie (Noyes) Hendrickson in Perth. She was raised in Leeds and Fargo. She married Harley McDowell on June 9, 1945 in Fargo. They moved to Bismarck in 1948 and she and Harley started McDowell's Big Boy in 1953. They retired after 25 years in business. She was a homemaker and a member of McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, and Scottsdale United Methodist Church, and a member of P.E.O. sisterhood. She was a board member of the University of Mary, and active in the Bismarck Dakota Zoo Foundation, Medora Foundation, McDowell Dam Recreation Area, YMCA, University of North Dakota, Concordia College, and many charitable organizations. She is survived by her husband, Harley; a sister, Joyce Harris, Provo, Utah; and several nieces and nephews. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Sherry Lee Nesta, 42, Loveland, Colo., and formerly of Bismarck and Hazen, died April 22, 2000 at her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at St. John's Catholic Church, Loveland. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery, Fort Collins, Colo. She is survived by two sons, Anthony and Nicholas, both of Loveland; one daughter, Gina Marie Nesta, Loveland; two brothers, James Weber, Thorton, Colo., and Glenn Weber, Casper, Wyo.; and two sisters, Patricia Aipperspach and Marie Link, both of Beulah. Donald Max Rausauer
Donald Max Rausauer, son of Purl G. and Anna (Hauge) Rauhauser was born in Curlew, Iowa on Aug. 26, 1924. He received his education in Ruthven, Iowa. In 1943, he enlisted in the US Army. He served with the 70th Infantry Division in World War II. He received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge and others. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He owned and operated a produce company with a partner in Marathon, Iowa. He later worked for another produce company in Storm Lake, Iowa. He married Patricia Thomas on April 8, 1947. He had been in the Army Reserves and as a 2nd lieutenant went to Officers Candidate School in Fort Benning, Ga. He served with the 21st Infantry Division in Korea in 1953-1954. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Presidential Unit Citation. In 1954, he was assigned to the Induction and Processing Station in Fargo, where he met his present wife. He married LaVonne Hock in Fargo on June 29, 1957. He spent 1964-1965 in Korea with the 24th Infantry Division. He was promoted to major on March 12, 1965. In October, he was assigned to Vietnam where he served as senior advisor to the 7th ARVN Regiment and later to III Corps Operations Command Center. He received the Combat Infantry Badge with one star and the Galantry Cross with Bronze Star. He retired from the Army on Nov. 30, 1968. On Dec. 15, 1999, he was one of over 40 North Dakota veterans who were recognized at a medal ceremony presented by Sen. Kent Conrad at the Army Reserve Center in Fargo. Upon retirement, Don and LaVonne moved their family to Verona, where they owned and operated a grocery store for four years. He later worked for the city of Oakes, and was a substitute mail carrier. Donald was an active member of St. Raphael's Catholic Parish. He held memberships in the Retired Officers Association, 70th Infantry Division Association, American Legion, Sheyenne Valley Woodcarvers and the Disabled American Veterans. He served as mayor of Verona from 1980 to 1984. Don will be remembered for his love for his family and grandchildren, his special talents for woodcarving and work with agates, his love for hunting and fishing and his happy disposition. He was a hunter safety instructor for many years and was especially interested in preserving out natural resources so that his grandchildren's children could enjoy these gifts of nature as he had. He is survived by his wife, LaVonne; and five children, Linda Lain, Fort Meyers, Fla., Deb (Ed) Didier, Valley City, SFC Donald J. (AeKyung), Tomah, Wis., Mark (Annette), Turtle Lake, and Bob (Barb) Bismarck. He is also survived by three brothers, John (Vi), Las Vegas, Nev., Bob (Ruth), Graettinger, Iowa, and Bill (Carol), Lewisville, Texas; and three sisters, Lois (Jack) Johnson, Everly, Iowa, Barbara Reusch, Ukiah, Calif., and Rose (Ken) Harrison, Costa Mesa, Calif.; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Mervin; a sister, Vivian; a son, Steven John; a daughter, Sherry Kay Rothmeier; and a grandson, Daniel Krueger. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. today at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Oakes, and 6-8 p.m. tonight at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Verona. A prayer service will be said at 7 p.m. tonight at the church. She is survived by two sons, Tony, Fargo, and Donald, Napoleon; one daughter, Darlene Weigel, Bsimarck; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Mike Sperle, Napoleon, and a sister, Elizabeth Weigel, Federal Way, Wash. Keith L. Shafer
GLEN ULLIN -- Keith L. Shafer, 50, Glen Ullin, died April 23, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Glen Ullin, with the Rev. Jean E. Rosewall officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with full military rites. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. MDT today, at Spangelo Funeral Home, Glen Ullin and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. A prayer service will be said at 7 p.m. MDT tonight at the funeral home. Keith was born Nov. 5, 1949 in Bismarck, the son of Russell and Okley (Witham) Shafer. Keith was raised and educated on the family farm and attended school until the eighth grade in Tell Township near Kintyre. From early childhood on, Keith had a love for animals and the outdoors. He graduated from Napoleon High School. Keith worked on a farm near Wimbledon until he entered the US Marine Corp on Oct. 2, 1969. While in the service, he served in Vietnam. He was discharged on Sept. 29, 1972 and began working construction. He married Sharon Opp on May 25, 1974 in Glen Ullin. In 1982, he was employed by North American Coal as a heavy equipment operator until December of 1996, when he was diagnosed with cancer. Keith had a special bond with his horse, and enjoyed the many hours spent outdoors with him. He was a US Marine Corp Sergeant from Oct. 2, 1969 to Sept. 29, 1972 and a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Glen Ullin. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; one son, Brian, Glen Ullin; one daughter, Kayla, Glen Ullin; two brothers, Francis (Betty) Shafer, Rapid City, S.D., and Eugene (Chong) Shafer, Faxon, Okla.; and one sister, Joanne (Gordon) Etter, Wimbledon. She is survived by two sons, Dean Wilson, Lincoln, and Robert Wilson, Mill Valley, Calif.; two daughters, Susan Stauffer, Anchorage, Alaska, Jane Cockerham, Huntsville, Texas; two brothers, Norman Neumann, Fargo, and Calvin Neumann, Clovis, N.M.; five sisters, Alma Dachtler, Elgin, Eleanor Aune, Bismarck, Irene Kaster, Sandy, Ore., June Jensen and Lillian Neumann, both of Oregon City, Ore.; and three grandchildren.
