Vincent Gross
Vincent Gross, 81, Bismarck, died April 13, 2000, in a Bis-marck hospital. Services will be held at noon Monday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charles Heidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7 p.m. tonight. Vincent was born April 7, 1919, at Brisbane, the son of Aloysius and Barbara (Gutman) Gross. He was raised and attended school in rural Grant County. On July 6, 1943, he married Olivia Kopp at Raleigh. They farmed for a brief time in Grant County before moving to Bismarck. He worked as an automotive mechanic for more than 40 years, until his retirement in 1989. Following retirement he worked five years for the Bismarck Park Board. Vincent was a lifetime member of the Eagles and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, socializing and visiting with friends and family, and going for rides in the country. He is survived by his wife, Olivia; seven children and their spouses, Donna and Harold Sabot, Madison, Wis., Irene and Ed Bader, and Pat and Vickay Gross, all of Bismarck, Rosemary and Kevin Sailer, Mandan, Tim and Julia Gross, Lincoln, and Dorothy Martin and William Gross, both of Bismarck; 12 grandchildren; and two brothers, Baldwin Gross, Bismarck, and Leo Gross, Great Falls, Mont. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister.
Helmer R. Larson
Helmer R. Larson, 93, Bismarck, died April 13, 2000 in a Mandan nursing home. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Church of Saint Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. Monday, at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. A rosary and prayer service will be said at 7 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home. Helmer Larson was born Sept. 6, 1906 in Edmore to Hans and Rellie (Kettelson) Larson. He attended school in Prospect Township and worked on the family farm. Helmer married Alice Sullivan on June 16, 1931. They farmed near Starkweather until retirement in 1969, when they moved to Bismarck. Helmer enjoyed spending time with his family and playing whist. He had a special place in his heart for his daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was loved dearly by his family and will be missed very much. He is survived by his wife, Alice; three daughters and two sons-in-law, LaVerne and Edward Gossett, Bismarck, Theresa and Duane Fike, Hastings, Minn., and Carolene Wass, Westminister, Colo.; nine grandchildren, Annelle Fahlsing, Denver, Colo., Dale Gossett, Bismarck, Valerie Bondeson, Phoenix, Ariz., Renae Lesmann, Minneapolis, Roger Fike, Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Andrea Fike, Minneapolis, Rodney Wass, Devils Lake, Deborah Fuentas, Brighten, Colo., and James Wass, Denver, Colo.; 17 great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Albert, Edmore, Edward, Devils Lake, and Vernon, Drayton. Dale W. Ozbun
Dale W. Ozbun, 82, Carson, died April 14, 2000 in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MDT at American Lutheran Church, Flasher, with the Rev. Dale Carmen officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Flasher. Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. today, at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. Dale was born Sept. 6, 1917 in Morton County to Ralph and Jennie (Vogel) Ozbun. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he was a prisoner-of-war, and he earned a purple heart. Dale was a truck driver his entire life. Dale married Milda Zeller in 1948. She died on August 6, 1975. Dale later married Pauline Sokolofsky in 1979. Dale is survived by three daughters, Renee Ozbun, Bismarck, Debra Ozbun, and special friend, Jerry Kruckenberg, Bismarckj, and Linda Ternes and husband David, Flasher; five sons, Jerry Ozbun and wife, Jan, Minneapolis, Gary Ozbun and wife, Sonia, Mandan, Ronnie Ozbun and wife Diane, Billings, Mont., Kevin Ozbun and wife Denise, Iowa, and Kim Ozbun, Bismarck; 12 grandchildren, Andy, Kelly, Melissa, Jessica, David Jr., Brandi, Acacia, Lisa, Stacie, Abbie, Jordan, and Trenton; two great-grandchildren, Blake and Tiffany; one sister, Yvonne Torkelson, Seattle, Wash.; and one brother, Bob Ozbun, Lynwood, Calif. PARSHALL -- Samuel Ring, 92, Parshall, died April 15, 2000 in a Parshall nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Rockview Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Parshall, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Minot. Angele Tufts
Sister Angele Tufts, 86, a founding member of the Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery, Bismarck, died April 13, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, at the Chapel of Annunciation Monastery. A wake service is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Monday at the monastery, where visitation begins at 1 p.m. Monday. A warm, caring person, Sister Angele served in health care for 40 years, 19 of which were spent as administrator of Garrison Memorial Hospital from 1955-74. She was president of the North Dakota Hospital Association in 1961 and 1972 and active in other state and national health care professional organizations. For 21 years, she was archivist for Annunciation Monastery and the University of Mary. Born Oct. 11, 1913 in Portland, Ore., Helen Margaret was the fifth child of Frank and Helen (Witt) Tufts. She entered St. Benedict's Convent in 1932 and made her monastic profession on July 11, 1934. Sister Angele came to North Dakota in 1934 to attend the St. Alexius School of Nursing. After graduating in 1937, she served at St. Alexius as nurse and director and instructor of nurses for the school of nursing. She also worked in medical records at St. Alexius, Richardton, Bowman and Garrison. Sister Angele is remembered for her commitment to the care of the sick, her sense of humor and contagious laugh, her compassion and respect for others and her amicable nature. She once wrote, "The most valuable lesson in life for me has been to learn to live with others in peace." She also appreciated being a Benedictine sister. "My religious community has been my source of happiness," she wrote. She is survived by a sister, Marie Larson, Richfield, Minn.; a brother, John Tufts, Panama City Beach, Fla.; nieces, nephews and the Benedictine Sisters of Annunciation Monastery.
Geneva "Gen" Williams
Geneva "Gen" Williams, 84, died on April 15, 2000 in Bismarck. Cremation rites were accorded. There will be a memorial mass at a later date. Gen was born Sept. 8, 1915 in Marion, the daughter of Frank and Ann Loendorf Kramer. Her husband, Lester S. Williams, whom she married on April 26, 1942, in St. Mary's rectory, Bismarck, is deceased. Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Henry Bouchee, Kankakee, Ill.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Lester and Barbara Williams, Livingston, Mont., Francis and Cathy Williams, and William and Esther Williams, all of Bismarck; one brother and sister-in-law, Darby and Jeanne Kramer, Tucson, Ariz.; one sister, Margaret Orvedahl, San Diego, Calif.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Deceased is a brother, Francis Kramer. Geneva worked at the clinic of Drs. Orr, Henderson and Goughner, Bismarck, and St. Alexius Medical Center. While living in California, she worked through a nursing registry doing home care. Gen was of the Catholic faith, a member of Royal Neighbors and Catholic Daughters. Zane S. Johnson, 61, Plymouth, Minn., died April 14, 2000 in a Robbinsdale, Minn. hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church, Plymouth. Private burial will take place. Hertha Brockel
Hertha Brockel, 77, Bismarck, and formerly of McLaughlin, S.D., died April 11, 2000 in a Bismarck care center. Services were held on April 14 at United Church of Christ, McLaughlin. Burial was in First Baptist Cemetery, McLaughlin. Hertha Metzger was born on Nov. 29, 1922 to George and Martha (Moser) Metzger on their farm west of McLaughlin in Corson County, S.D. Hertha attended the Cadillac Country School. Following her education she continued to live and work on the family farm. On Nov. 8, 1939 she married Wolvin Brockel at McIntosh, S.D. Following their marriage, they made their home with Wolvin's family until the spring of 1941, when they moved toa farm southwest of McLaughlin, where they lived and farmed until the spring of 1944. They then moved to a farm 10 miles west of McLaughlin. Hertha lived on the farm until September of 1997, when she moved to Bismarck, after being on the farm all her life. Hertha was a great wife, mother, farm hand, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to cook, can, crochet, knit, and being with friends and relatives, but her greatest passion was the Bible. Hertha attended the United Church of Christ in McLaughlin and the Bismarck Baptist Church. Hertha was also a member of the Circle Cowbells. She became strong and independent and developed lasting friendships. After being diagnosed with ALS in October of 1998, Hertha entered the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. Family and friends would visit to give support and leave with more because of her strong belief in God. On April 11, 2000, Hertha won the Battle and was received by her savior. Hertha is survived by two sons, Larry (Vonnie) Brockel and Russell (Marlys) Brockel, all of Bloomington, Minn.; three grandsons, five granddaughters; 13 great-grandchildren and three sisters, Alvina Walker, Rapid City, S.D. Tillie Martell and Martha Walker, both of McLaughlin. Her husband, her parents, one stepbrother, three brothers and two sisters preceded Hertha in death. Clara A. Doll
Clara A. Doll, 86, died April 16, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Mandan United Methodist Church, 211 2nd Ave. NW, Mandan, with the Rev. Mark Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today and will continue from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. Clara was born on May 28, 1913 in Glen Ullin, the daughter of Gust and Olga (Schrenk) Binder. She attended rural school in Beulah and spent her younger years working in Mandan before marrying Nick A. Doll on Jan. 28, 1938. Nick died on Jan. 12, 1984. Known as the "Smiling Cowgirl," she played the guitar and sang for a weekly radio show on KGCU. She also loved to play her organ. Working in her garden and with her flowers, was her passion. She was known for raising large German tomatoes. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, George and Lois and Delton and Vicki, all of Mandan; one daughter and son-in-law, Gina and Howard Abbott, Bakersfield, Calif.; five grandchildren, Jim Doll and his wife, Bismarck, Nancy and her husband, Cordell Eckroth, Hazen, Bob Doll, Nathan Doll and Alex (A. J.) Doll, all of Mandan; five great-grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Minnie and Roger Endreson, Zap, and Lila and Ray Hoerner, Missoula, Mont. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four sisters and one brother.

She is survived by her sons, Leonard, Wichita, Kan., Donald, Bismarck, and Paul, Potomac Falls, Va.; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mavis Monahan
Mavis "Ma" Monahan, 78, 401 E. Prairie Lane, Mandan, died peacefully with family and friends around her, on April 16, 2000 at her home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, with Chaplain Burnie Kunz officiating. A funeral procession will leave the Perry Funeral Home parking lot at 11 a.m. Saturday and will proceed to the Lutheram Memorial Cemetery, Driscoll for a noon committal service. Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. Wednesday, at Perry Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 8 p.m. Mavis was born July 9, 1921 at Aberdeen, S.D., to Alvin and Mabel (Titus) Rosvold. She was raised and educated in Driscoll. She graduated from Driscoll High School in 1939, where she enjoyed playing basketball and won many awards and trophies. After graduation, she worked for Boeing in Washington where she met her husband, James T. Monahan Sr. They moved to New Jersey where she worked at RCA making tubes for electronics where they raised two sons. After her husband died in 1969, she moved back to North Dakota to be close to her mother. She bought Vi's Cafe and renamed it, "The Wooden Nickel." She operated the cafe for a few years and then bought The Midnight Rambler and renamed it Ma's Place. In 1987, she closed Ma's Place then opened the Broken Oar that she operated until 1993, when she retired. Mavis loved her annual Ma's Place parties and Christmas parties. She was Ma to everyone who knew her. She enjoyed boating, camping and all the Freedom Riders events that she would attend. Mavis was very proud to be the only honorary member of the Freedom riders of North Dakota. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Marion, South Plainfield, N.J., and James T. and Cindy, Mandan; one half-sister, Carol Bryant, Sedona, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Tommy and Joey, South Plainfield, Janine, Colorado Springs, Colo., Tony, Katelyn and Ethan, all of Mandan; and all the dear friends that she made while operating the businesses she owned. Mavis was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, James.
