Wilfred Schatz
Wilfred A. "Butch" Schatz, 78, New England, passed away May 8, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Saturday at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson, with the Rev. Jerry Erickson officiating. Military rites will be provided by the Anton Ulijohn Post No. 66. Inurnment will be held at 2 p.m. CDT Monday in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. MDT Friday at the funeral home, where a Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from Noon to 2 p.m. MDT Saturday at the funeral home. Butch was born Nov. 25, 1922, in Burnstad, to Fred and Elizabeth (Harth) Schatz. The family moved to New England and started a grocery store and cattle operation. Butch graduated from New England Public High School where he excelled at athletics. He scored the first touchdown, at home and on the road, for the newly formed football team. He was also All-District in basketball and baseball. He was found at home wearing his Tiger jacket. After graduation he attended Wahpeton SSS and was a member of the boxing team. He took second in the state in the Golden Gloves competition. The war broke out and he moved to Denver, where he worked for Remington Arm before being called to serve. He served in the regular Army as a medic on a transport ship to and from Australia. He transferred to the 82nd Airborne Division in 1943 and was in 505th combat regiment. While stationed in England, he won the middleweight boxing championship of the 82nd Airborne. Butch served in every engagement in the western campaign including D-Day at Normandy, invasion of Belgium, invasion of Holland, crossing of the Rhine and on to Berlin. He made three combat jumps behind enemy lines, was wounded twice and received several citations for valor. He was discharged a staff sergeant in 1945. Butch returned to New England and began farming, but moved back to Denver where he worked as a carpenter. While at home he met the love of his life, Lou Ann Madsen, whom he married Dec. 28, 1950. He then began a farming and ranching operation with his father and brother. In 1971, he started his own farm and ranch operation, which he worked until his retirement in 1990. He was a 32-degree Mason and was a past W.M. of New England Lodge No. 111. He was a Scottish and York Rite member, a Ranger in the El Zagal Shrine, and a member of the Royal Order of Jesters. He also belonged to the American Legion, VFW, 40&8 and the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge. His number one hobby was caring for his family. He loved to go to his grandchildren's games and activities. He rode a motorcycle for 35 years with the El Zagal Rangers and was a regular at the coffee shop to discuss the goings-on around town. He also had a great love for pets, especially dogs. He is survived by his loving wife, Lou Ann; his son, Mike and daughter-in-law, Patti, New England; his daughter, Suzie and son-in-law, Gary Benson, Sheridan, Wyo.; and his grandchildren, Sarah Schatz and Nathan Schatz, Grand Forks, Amber Schatz and Joshua Schatz, New England, and Adam Benson, Sheridan, Wyo. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Fred and Bethl and his brothers, Richard and Donald.

Edward Schwindt
KILLDEER -- Edward Schwindt, 89, Killdeer, died May 8, 2001, in a Killdeer care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Killdeer. Further arrangements are pending with Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson.

Glen Severson
RAY -- Glen E. Severson, 73, Ray, died May 8, 2001, in a Williston medical center of congestive heart failure. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Ray Lutheran Church, Ray. Burial will be in Sunset Rest Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; three children, Vickie Melchior, Bismarck, Glen Severson, Ray, and Valorie Roth, Sidney, Mont.; and five grandchildren. Gerald Vallier
OBERON -- Gerald Vallier, 76, Oberon, died May 8, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church, Oberon. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; one daughter, Barbara McCormick, Jamestown; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Lucille Olson, Enumclaw, Wash., Ann Erickson, Grand Forks, and Georgine Isakson, Fargo. Caroline Bender
Caroline Bender, 82, Bismarck, died May 9, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a vigil will begin at 8 tonight. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. Caroline Neigum was born Feb. 25, 1919, east of Linton, at St. Michaels, to Alex and Katherine (Feist) Neigum. She was raised and educated at St. Michaels. On Oct. 16, 1939, she married Edward Bender at St. Michaels' Church. Following their marriage they moved to Braddock, and in 1943, they moved to Hazelton where they worked on a farm. In 1946 they moved back to Braddock before their final move to Bismarck in 1968. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Caroline is survived by eight sons and seven daughters-in-law, Edwin and Charlotte, Harry and Joyce, Jim and Annette, and Larry, all of Bismarck, Tom and Sue, Mandan, and Andrew and Dorinda, Lynden, Wash., Willie and Carol, Bothell, Wash., and Don and Pam, Seattle; three daughters and sons-in-law, Angeline and Willie Hilzendeger, and Charlene and Ken Fetzer, all of Bismarck, and Lorraine and Darwin Eisenbarth, Missoula, Mont.; 24 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; her seven sisters and five brothers-in-law, Rose and Ike Feist, Katie Schmidt, Phyllis Garman, all of Bismarck, Maggie and Marvin Barlow, Ann and Tony Schmidt, Elizabeth Keller and Francis Juel Gustafson, all of Seattle; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Monica Neigum, Frank and Leota Neigum, all of Bismarck, and Alex and Carol Neigum, Seattle; and many nieces, nephews and good friends. Caroline was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; her parents; two brothers, Joseph and Peter; and one sister, Agnes.

Ruth Cary
JAMESTOWN -- Ruth Johnson Cary, 81, Jamestown, died March 3, 2001, in San Antonio, Texas. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, with burial in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown. She is survived by one brother, Siguard Johnson, Bradenton, Fla.

Delphine Hall
NEW TOWN -- Delphine Hall, 65, New Town, died May 8, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ralph Wells Memorial Complex, White Shield. Further arrangements are pending at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

Charles Hamel
NAPOLEON -- Charles Hamel, 75, Napoleon, died May 8, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Napoleon, with the Rev. Richard Hagestuen officiating. Burial will be in Napoleon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. today at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon, and will continue at the church one hour before services. The family will be at the funeral home from 6-8 tonight to greet the public. Charles Raymond Hamel was born May 24, 1925, the son of Dale and Eula (Wurm) Hamel at Kintyre. He grew up on the family farm and was educated in the Kintyre area. Charles then served in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic Pacific operation where his unit was awarded the Victory Medal. On Aug. 25, 1953, he married Alvina Holzworth in South Dakota. The couple then moved to Minot where they lived for two years while Charles worked as a heavy equipment operator building the Minot Air Force Base. They then returned to Napoleon where Charles worked as a mechanic at the Super Service Garage, Tappen Farm and Equipment and Wolf Equipment. After his retirement, he kept busy helping Harley Grenz farm, and spending time with his family and friends. He spent many hours with his children and grandchildren, and taught them how to enjoy life. He took great pride in his gun collection, and spending time teaching his children and grandchildren how to fish and hunt. He was active with the church, AAL, served on the church council, and was a member of the Napoleon American Legion Barry Hoff Post 72, where he was a past commander. Charles is survived by his wife, Alvina; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Tom Silbernagel, and Deborah and Ralph Mowder, all of Bismarck, and Patty and Dennis Schneider, Lewiston, Idaho; seven grandchildren, Cari, Aaron and Matthew Silbernagel, Jessica and Sarah Mowder, and Benjamin and Jack Schneider; two step-grandchildren, Kent and Cory Mowder; and one sister, Ruth Haibeck, Steele. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Dale and Eula Hamel; his stepmother, Ida Hamel; two brothers, Donald and Ron Hamel; and one sister, Grace. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Kenneth Hulstrand
LAKOTA -- Kenneth M. Hulstrand, 80, Lakota, died May 8, 2001, in the Devils Lake hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lakota Lutheran Church, with burial in Lakota Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Esther; one daughter, Jeanne Laabs, Woodbridge, Va.; one son, Larry, Lakota; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Woodrow, Fairdale. NEW SALEM -- Joseph Jangula, 85, New Salem, died May 9, 2001, in a New Salem care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton. Further arrangements are pending at Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

DICKINSON -- Bertha Mulske, 72, Dickinson, died May 8, 2001, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Saturday at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson, with burial in Gladstone Cemetery. She is survived by one daughter, Terry Smith, Bakersfield, Calif.; four sons, Mike, Dave, Randy and Gary, all of Gladstone; two grandchildren; and one sister, Robbie Edwards, Ely, Nev.

Elsie Reister
MEDINA -- Elsie Reister, 89, Great Falls, Mont., died May 10, 2001, in a Great Falls care center. Arrangements are pending at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
