Lila McDonald
Lila McDonald, 86, Bismarck Baptist Home, died May 3, 2001, in the care center. Services will be held at noon Wednesday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Tuesday at Dakota Memorial Chapel, Bismarck. Lila Skavland was born Aug. 13, 1914, the daughter of Pete and Rebecca Skavland. She was raised on a farm near Tioga and graduated from Tioga High School. She moved to Bismarck and married James M. McDonald on May 22, 1939. Lila worked as a secretary for the State Plumbing Board for many years. She has been a resident of Bismarck since her marriage, and has lived at the Bismarck Baptist Home the last seven years. She converted to the Catholic faith when she got married. She was a member of Cathedral and Corpus Christi parishes, and belonged to several ladies auxiliaries. She was also an avid and skilled bridge player. Lila is survived by her children, Richard J. McDonald, Woodbridge, Va., and Kathy Yantzer, Gypsum, Colo.; three grandchildren, James and Jason Yantzer, and Terri Hernandez; five great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchildren.

NEW ENGLAND -- Bernice B. Rustan, 85, Hettinger, died May 4, 2001, in the Hettinger care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, New England, with burial in Rainy Butte Lutheran Cemetery, New England. She is survived by two daughters, Eulale Kosen, Moorhead, Minn., and Claudia Dolecheck, Montgomery, Ala.; one son, Lewellyn Rustan, New England; three brothers, Milo Braaten, Hettinger, Alvin Braaten, Reeder, and Harold Braaten, Stanley; one sister, Lillie Huenink, Mott; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Ione Valer
NEW ROCKFORD -- Ione Valer, 93, New Rockford, died May 3, 2001, in the Bismarck Baptist Home. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, New Rockford, with the Rev. Jeff Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Home Cemetery, New Rockford. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday at Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford. Sylvia Ione Valer was born Sept. 11, 1907, at New Rockford, the daughter of Martin and Serena (Roaldson) Anderson. She was raised on a farm in Pleasant Prairie Township, Eddy County. She was confirmed at Kvernes Lutheran Church, rural Carrington, and attended school at Brantford and New Rockford. Ione attended college at Valley City and received her teaching certificate. She then taught in rural schools in Eddy County for a number of years. On June 20, 1939, Ione wsa united in marriage to Martin Valer, the son of Jacob and Anna (Engel) Valer at Sheyenne. They lived and raised their five children in New Rockford where Martin was employed by the Farmers Union Oil Co. Ione was a member of First Lutheran Church, New Rockford, where she was actively involved in the Sunday school program, Ladies Aid and the quilting group. She served as a tutor to special needs children in her home and also at New Rockford Public School. When her children were older, Ione worked at the Eddy County Court House for 16 years, first as deputy treasurer, and then as the county treasurer. Martin Valer died March 14, 1983. She is survived by five children and their spouses, Donald M. Valer, New Rockford, James D. and Barbara Valer, Huron, S.D., Judith F. and Bryan Dinkins, Hazen, David A. and Jean Valer, Bismarck, and Robert D. Valer, Washington, D.C.; eight grandchildren, Kristine and her husband Linc Kattner, Erik Valer, Dana Valer, Heidi Valer, Megan Dinkins, Blake Dinkins, Tyler Valer, and Katie Valer; two great-grandchildren, Karlie Valer and Lauren Kattner; one sister, Alma Berglund, Minneapolis; and one brother, Gilbert Anderson, Missoula, Mont. Ione was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Elmer and George; and two sisters, Ruth Topp and Mary Rosenberg.
Esther Bender
HENSLER -- Esther Bender, 77, Hensler, died May 5, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Methodist Church, Washburn, with burial in Hensler Cemetery. Yvonne Flurer
Yvonne "Bonnie" Ode Flurer, 71, passed away May 5, 2001, in Bismarck after a valiant and courageous battle with leukemia. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. George's Episcopal Church at Fourth St. and Avenue B with the Rev. Michael Horn presiding. Burial will be in the columbarium Gethsemane Cathedral, Fargo, at a later date. Visitation with family will be from 7-8:30 tonight at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Yvonne was born Jan. 23, 1930, in Bismarck, the daughter of Herman and Emily (Caudel) Ode. She grew up in Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1948. She worked for Bardwell-Robinson from 1948-1953. On Aug. 30, 1952, she was united in marriage to Paul Flurer at the First Presbyterian Church in Bismarck. Bonnie worked side by side with Paul at Skeels Electric from 1970 until their retirement in May 1989. Bonnie's first priority was always her family, including Paul's parents, Paul, her children, grandchildren, sisters and brothers, and nieces and nephews. She instilled by example a strong sense of moral character to all she touched. Her love of knitting will keep many warm for years to come. Bonnie was active in St. George's parish life for many years and she was blessed by many friendships at St. George's. She is survived by her husband, Paul; her daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Greg Bjerke, Fargo, Marty and Tom Peterson, St. Cloud, Minn.; her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Robin Flurer, Bismarck; one granddaughter, Katie Bjerke; and five grandsons, Patrick Bjerke, Casey and Tyler Peterson, and Zachary and Andrew Flurer. She is also survived by sisters and brothers-in-law, Dorothy Stoltz, La Quinta, Calif., and Arzella and Lawrence Engleman, Bismarck, Irene Strand, Virginia Beach, Va., Vera and Jack Hegedus; and one brother and sister-in-law, Alvin and Helen Ode, Bismarck. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers and four sisters. Memorials are preferred to St. George's Episcopal Church, Central North Dakota H.E.L.P. Center or the charity of your choice.

JAMESTOWN -- John L. Charles, 77, Jamestown, died May 5, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, with burial in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; four sons, John, Minot, David, Butte, Mont., Randy, Edina, Minn., and Steven, Fargo; 13 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren.
Fredrick Doll
NEW SALEM -- Fredrick "Fritz" Doll, 73, New Salem, died May 6, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at St. Pius V Catholic Church, New Salem, with the Rev. David Zimmer officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan at 2 p.m. CDT Thursday. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Wednesday at the church where a St. Anthony Verein rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by a parish vigil. Fredrick was born Dec. 11, 1927, at New Salem, the son of Jack and Helen (Schaner) Doll. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1946-1949, and married Eva Stein on Oct. 12, 1948. They farmed five miles north of Sweet Briar until 1975, when they moved into New Salem. Fritz worked for D & K Farm Equipment for six months and then, for Jim Kautzman Trucking for 10 years. For the last few years, he had helped a number of local farmers. He served for six years as a trustee on the building committee for St. Pius Church. He loved farming, spending time with his grandchildren and fishing. Fritz is survived by his wife, Eva; his mother, Helen Doll, New Salem; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Pat and Kathy, Wayne and Joy, all of New Salem, Jeff and Karen, Tigard, Ore., and Randy and his fiance, Tammy Skallet, both of Grand Forks; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Lance Sabot, and Sylvia and Keith Bayley, all of Bismarck; 11 grandchildren, Chad Doll, Stacey Jepsen and her husband, Marty, Chase Doll, Nicole Christian and her husband, Alan, Melissa Doll and her fiance, Nathan Davis, Troy, Billy, Eric and Andy Sabot, and Sydney and Logan Bayley; one great-grandson, Dawson Nagel; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Conrad and Rose Doll, and George J. Doll, all of New Salem; one sister and brother-in-law, Agnes and Marvin Rud, Devils Lake; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack; one brother, Joe; two sisters, Rose and Monica Doll; and one sister-in-law, Donna Doll.
David Enyart
David W. Enyart, 58, Mandan, died May 6, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bismarck Funeral Home. The family will be receiving friends from 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. David was born Dec. 19, 1942, in Washburn, to David W. Sr. and Beulah (Heiser) Enyart. He was raised and educated in Washburn and graduated from Washburn High School in 1961. In 1964, he married Jane Ann Thompson. He had resided in Steele, Linton, Washburn, Bismarck and Mandan. David married Pauline Schaff, Nov. 25, 1989. Over the years, David did many things such as farming, ranching and income tax preparation. He also wrote, directed and acted in several plays depicting the Civil War and the Custer era. David's articles were published in many magazines. His interests included geneology (family history), flowers, plants, love for animals and early American history. He enjoyed the companionship of friends and family. David is survived by his wife, Pauline; eight children and step-children, David Jr., Mandan, James and Jaylyn, Vermillion, S.D., Deidre Enyart, St. Paul, Minn., Robert, Fargo, Elizabeth Enyart, St. Paul, Tina Perry, West Palm Beach, Fla., John Feaselman, West Palm Beach, Dina and Mike Gerl, Mandan; his grandchildren, Angela, Krissy, David Jr., Tayler, Tonya, Cole, John Jr., Jessica, Brandie, Beth, John, Shaw and Trientae; and his sister, Ione Quenzer, Lead, S.D. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Irene Hawley.
