WILLISTON -- Helen Leonard, 76, Williston, died April 28, 2001, in a Williston medical center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Everson Memorial Chapel, Williston. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. She is survived by three daughters, Carla Herrmann, Tacoma, Wash., Kay Casey, Portland, Ore., and Susan Hughes, Williston; two sons, Clark, Portland, Ore., and Michael, Killeen, Texas; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, June Slagle, Williston.

KULM -- Martha Ziebart, 92, Kulm, died April 26, 2001, in the Ashley hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Zion Lutheran Church, Kulm. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, rural Kulm. She is survived by six sons, Donald, Gerald and James, all of Minneapolis, Minn., Larry, Casper, Wyo., Robert, Fredonia, and Delmar, Woodville, Wis.; four daughters, Joyce Haag, Wishek, Lucille Mason, Black Hawk, S.D., Betty Dudek, Campbell, Calif., and Norma Collins, Laguna Hills, Calif.; 21 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. Roger Bond II
Roger A. "Tim" Bond II, 63, Bismarck, surrendered April 29, 2001, to the cancer he had battled so courageously for almost 9 years. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Mandan. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held today from 9 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home. There will be no visitation at the church. Roger Allin "Tim" Bond II was born July 20, 1937, in Bottineau, the son of Roger and Dorothy (Harnit) Bond. Raised and educated there, he graduated from Bottineau High School in 1955. He graduated from the North Dakota School of Forestry in Bottineau in 1957 and from the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks with B.S. and B.A. degrees in 1960. He married Jan Hellman of Glen Ullin at St. Joseph Church in Mandan on Aug. 10, 1968. Tim was employed as a real estate appraiser by the N.D. State Highway Dept. until 1970 when he became a housing specialist with the N.D. Office of Economic Opportunity in Bismarck where he remained for three years. He was a staff appraiser for the Bureau of Reclamation until beginning his employment as a realty specialist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1989. Tim was a member of many professional organizations and was a charter member and past president of the North Dakota Chapter of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. A qualified expert witness in court proceedings, as well as an experienced lecturer, Tim was happiest when he could be outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing with his sons in whom he took such pride. He also loved the time he spent with his family and friends at the cabin on Lake Metigoshe where, in his younger years, he displayed considerable expertise as a water skier. Tim will be remembered for his community involvement, especially as a trustee and ordained elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Mandan, and for his instrumental help in developing the youth hockey program in Mandan. He is survived by his wife, Jan; his sons, Ryan, Shakopee, Minn., Ryan's fiancee Cheryl Ratzliff, San Jose, Calif., and Casey, Flagstaff, Ariz.; his mother, Dorothy Bond, Bottineau; his sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Jim Whetter, Bottineau; his brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Helen Bond, Charles City, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his father, Roger, who died Sept. 11, 1973.
Betty Bowman
Betty Bowman, 83, Bellevue, Neb., formerly of Rhame, died April 30, 2001, in Bellevue. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at Bowman United Methodist Church, Bowman. Burial will be in the city cemetery. She is survived by five daughters, Barb Beggs, Taylor, Sue Ryan, Buckley, Wash., Lynn Erickson, Omaha, Neb., Julie Shaw, Andover, Kan., and Jeannie Shields, Goodland, Kan.; three sons, Bill, Bowman, Dick, Rhame, and David, Brewster, Kan.; 20 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Lorraine Ehli
DICKINSON -- Lorraine Christine (Huber) Ehli, 74, Dickinson, loving daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother went home to be with her Lord April 30, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Thursday at Peace Lutheran Church, 1550 21st St. W., Dickinson, with the Rev. Steven Schou officiating. Burial will be in the city cemetery. Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. MDT today and from 8 a.m. to noon MDT Thurday at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. Lorraine was the daughter of Alexander Huber and Willimina (Entzel) Huber. She was born north of Dodge May 2, 1926. Lorraine married Albert Ehli June 10, 1946, in Dodge. They farmed south of Golden Valley until 1991, when they retired and moved to Dickinson. Lorraine enjoyed helping others, always putting them before herself, helping in church and serving her Lord. She also took great joy in cooking, baking, crocheting and visits to her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Albert; her children, Gerald (Sharon) Ehli, Aberdeen, S.D., and Anita (Chuck) Wald, Rapid City, S.D.; her grandchildren, Erik (Amy) Ehli, Cheri (Tyler) (Ehli) Smith, Bridget Wald and Nicholas Wald; two brothers, Art (Elaine) Huber and Roland (Vonnie) Huber, both of Bismarck; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two infant brothers; an infant sister; and one sister, Arlene (Huber) Johnston. Memorials will be given to Peace Lutheran Church in memory of Lorraine C. Ehli.

Mary Hatlelid
GRAND FORKS -- Mary DesChenes Hatlelid, 81, Grand Forks, died April 30, 2001, at her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Grand Forks. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Williston. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Norman Funeral Home, Grand Forks, where a prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Mary Theresa DesChenes was born June 12, 1919, in Cashel, the daughter of Joseph C. and Mary Anna (Sabourin) DesChenes. She was raised and educated in Cashel and Oakwood, and graduated from St. James Academy in Grand Forks in 1936. She attended Dakota Business College in Fargo and began working for Sears in Fargo. Mary married Ralph Sylvester Hatlelid Dec. 17, 1940. They moved to Billings, Mont., in 1942, to New York City in 1945 and to Williston in 1946. Ralph died Aug. 4, 1959. Mary began working as a secretary for Gaffeny's Office Supply in Williston and in 1969 she moved to Grand Forks and worked as a secretary of Gaffeny's Office Supply for another 25 years before retiring in 1994. Mary was a member of St. Joseph's Altar Society in Williston, a member of Catholic Daughters for over 50 years in Williston, and also a member of the Professional Secretary Association. Mary is survived by her sons, James (JoNell), Minot, J. Michael, St. Louis, Mo., and R. Robert (Renee), Joplin, Mo.; her daughter, Mary Connie Hatlelid, Fargo; her grandchildren, Terri, Kristi, Lauri, Robin, Paul, Erin, Patrick, Seth, Chene, Tessa, Ryan and Rebecca; and a great-granddaughter, Cassie. She was preceded in death by her 10 brothers and sisters. Memorials are suggested to Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Colleen Hughes
Colleen Lindsay Hughes, 75, Winona, Minn., died peacefully April 30, 2001, in a Winona care center with her husband and daughters at her side. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Congregational Church, Winona, followed by a reception in the Fellowship Room. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Colleen was born April 6, 1926, in Livingston, Mont., to John Daniel and Melva Lindsay. She graduated from Mandan High School in 1944, then attended Iowa State University, majoring in Home Economics, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. On June 15, 1947, she married Sidney O. Hughes in Mandan. They moved to Winona in 1953 when he took a position as a physician at the Winona Clinic. Colleen was active in a number of service organizations, including Girl Scouts, PEO Chapter CS, County Medical Society Auxiliary and Portia Club. She also served on the Board of Directors for YMCA Camp Olson for many years, including several terms as president. She attended classes at Winona State College, studying French, philosophy and conservation and ran a small coffee business, the Coffee Collection. She was an avid conservationist and was active in a number of local conservation issues. Colleen loved her family and with her husband Sid and four daughters, enjoyed reading, traveling, hiking and camping. More recently, she loved listening to music, dancing, feeding the ducks and socializing with her dear friends. We will miss her smile, her sense of humor and her appreciation of beauty and all creatures great and small. She is survived by her husband, Sidney O. Hughes; her daughters and their partners, Honore (Julie), Melissa (Rob), Holly (John) and Stacy (Neal); her brothers, Frank Lindsay, Newton, Iowa, and his children Todd and Jeff, and Jack Lindsay, Bismarck, and his children Chris and Mary; and her cat, Mei Ling II. Colleen's family asks that memorials be given to YMCA Camp Olson, the Alzheimer's Association or the First Congregational Church Memorial Fund.
Peggy Sue Johnson
MINOT -- Peggy Sue Brennan Johnson, 54, Minot, died April 28, 2001, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, Minot. Burial will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Vang Lutheran Cemetery, Manfred. She is survived by her husband, David; five sisters, Kathleen Anklam, Rolette, Carol Desper, Bismarck, Margaret Bedard, Bottineau, Betsy Sniadak, Boston, Mass., and Gail Fox, Pelican Rapids, Minn.; and one brother, Jack Brennan, Fargo. Benjamin Lechler
Benjamin Lechler, 76, Bismarck, passed away peacefully April 29, 2001, in a local hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service. Ben was born near Golva on March 22, 1925, to Benjamin and Elizabeth (Kremer) Lechler. Ben attended public school in Golva for a short time and in 1937 was placed in the Grafton State School. Ben remained at Grafton until 1984 when he moved to a transitorial facility group home in Grand Forks. He remained there until 1986 at which time he moved to Bismarck and entered services through H.I.T. Incorporated Adult Foster Care. Ben lived with the Bill Lord family and remained with them until 1989 when he moved into his own apartment. While Ben was in Grafton he met the love of his life and best friend, Pat Danley. They continued to be best friends until his death. Ben will be remembered for his unfaltering loyalty and love for Pat, as well as his wonderful "belly-laugh" and incredible twinkle in his eye. Ben loved to tease, visit and be around other people. He also liked to fish and do mechanical things like fixing his wheelchair or little things. Ben was a collector and loved westerns and especially his hero, John Wayne. Ben's friends and fellow workers at Pride Work Force Development Center will miss him, as will his many friends. Most of all, Pat will be missing her loyal friend.
Barbara Mantz
CENTER -- Barbara Burton Mantz, 56, Center, died April 29, 2001, at her home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. CST Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Center, with the Rev. Marv Mutzenberger officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to noon today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue from 2 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until time of services Thursday at the church. Barbara was born in Las Vegas, Nev., on April 5, 1945, the daughter of Robert and Velma (Crockett) Burton. She was raised and graduated from high school in Berkley, Mich. In June 1988, she married Marvin Mantz. She attended Bismarck State College and had been employed with Cooperative Power in Underwood for 18 years until her retirement two years ago. Barbara was a lady most happy when outdoors, whether tending her flower garden or hunting and fishing with Marvin. She loved children and perhaps, sensing this, they were naturally drawn to her. She is survived by her husband and best friend, Marvin; her daughter and son-in-law, Tricia and Jim Albers, Stanton; her sons, Kirk Davison and his wife Jodi, Olympia, Wash., Kevin Davison, Bismarck, and Ricky Maier and his special friend Heidi Schatz, both of Minot; her mother, Velma Cooper, Springfield, Ill.; her father, Robert Burton, Berkley, Mich.; her children by marriage, Rhonda Falshing, Mesa, Ariz., Marsha Manzanares and her husband Phil, Salt Lake City, Utah, Twila Henley and her husband Paul, Mesa, Ariz., and Martin Mantz and his wife Paula, Chesapeake, Va.; numerous grandchildren; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Diana and Wayne Graham and Fay and Dave Jostes, Rochester, Ill.
