Mary Erickson
Mary B. Erickson, 83, Bismarck, died April 21, 2001, in her home. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, with the Rev. Rick Fossum officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mary Bernice Erickson was born
Jan. 24, 1918, at Devils Lake, the daughter of Bernard and Anna (Jorgenson) Erickson who immigrated from Norway. She graduated from Devils Lake Central High School and worked for insurance companies in Devils Lake, Great Falls, Mont., and Denver, before moving to Bismarck in 1949. She continued to work in the insurance field until she became employed with the North Dakota State Merit System Council. That agency became part of the North Dakota Central Personnel Division of the Office of Management and Budget, and she continued to work in that agency until she retired in 1982, with 31 years of employment with the state of North Dakota. Mary was a member of McCabe United Methodist Church and North Dakota Retired Public Employees Association. As a volunteer with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and the St. Alexius Medical Center Auxiliary, she spent many hours crocheting items to sell in the hospital gift shop. Mary enjoyed traveling, fishing, relaxing at Lake Metigoshe, visiting and dining out with her friends and relatives. She was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and enjoyed watching all of their games. A former league bowler, Mary always enjoyed watching bowling on television and in person. She was proud of her Norwegian heritage, and displayed her Velkommen sign to welcome everyone to her home. Mary was a source of support and enjoyment to her family and will be missed by all. Mary is survived by her sister, Ann Sattler, Devils Lake; her brother, Robert Erickson, Morton Grove, Ill.; and 25 nieces and nephews, including Joan Laib, Chanhassen, Minn., Carol Griffin-Eckart and her husband, Dwight Eckart, Bismarck, and Linda Sattler, Bismarck. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Helen Griffin, Bismarck; and her brother, Henry Erickson, La Crescenta, Calif. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Dr. Addo, Medcenter One HMR and Hospice, the staff at Primrose, and her special friends, for their friendship and support.
Martha Highbe
GOLDEN VALLEY -- Martha Highbe, 91, Golden Valley, died April 20, 2001, in the Hazen hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at Golgotha Lutheran Church, Golden Valley, with the Rev. Richard Melchert officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah. Martha was born
July 22, 1909, at Hosmer, S.D., the daughter of Christian and Katherina (Landenberger) Kiesz. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. The family homesteaded near Golden Valley in 1910. Martha was raised and educated near there and was fostered by the Joe Maxie family. In 1930 she married
Ferdinand Faut. They farmed in Dunn and Mercer counties. He died in January 1949. In April 1954, she married
Harold Highbe. He died in September 1955. In 1958, she moved into Golden Valley. Martha was a member of Golgotha Lutheran Church, Golden Valley, German Ladies Aid, Grey Ladies, Golden Valley Women's Club, and Golden Valley Community Club. She enjoyed gardening, canning, fishing, quilting and sewing. Martha loved children and babysat for many in the Golden Valley area. Her motto in life was, "Where there is a will, there is a way." She is survived by one son, Marvin and Marvee Faut, Golden Valley; two daughters, Jane and Delmar Mosset, Mead, Wash., and Darlene and Deen Brecht, Golden Valley; one stepson, Jim and his wife, JoAnn Highbe, Golden Valley; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; one half-sister, Hulda and her husband, Alton Swenson, Halliday; two half-brothers, Carl Kiesz, Williston, and Eddie and his wife, Shirley Kiesz, Bremerton, Wash.; one step-sister, Helen Kuch, Elgin. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother; her two husbands, Ferdinand Faut and Harold Highbe; one great-grandson; four sisters; one brother; one half-brother; three step-brothers; and one step-sister.
Amanda Jacobson
FARGO -- Amanda C. Jacobson, 86, Fargo, died April 19, 2001, in a Moorhead care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Fargo, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo. She is survived by two sons, Melford, Fargo, and Jerome, Ukiah, Calif.; two daughters, Alvina Heger, Moorhead, and Marilyn Hust, Bismarck; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Hilda Johnson
Hilda Johnson, 99, Bismarck, died April 20, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center Chapel, with the Rev. Oct. 12, 1901, near Osnabrock, the daughter of Haldor and Anne (Syverson) Rusten. She married
Clarence Johnson on Nov. 15, 1922, at Milton. They farmed and lived in Milton where they were members of the Milton Lutheran Church and Hilda belonged to the Ladies Aid. The couple moved to Bismarck in 1973. Clarence died in Bismarck on July 2, 1979. Hilda resided at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck for the last seven years. She had been a volunteer in the activity and sewing room at the nursing home during the late 1970s when Clarence was a resident. She is survived by her son, Larry Johnson, Bismarck; her three daughters, Lorraine Anderson, Bismarck, Betty Pfefer, Pleasanton, Calif., and Doris Beneke, Denver; her sister, Clara Hanson, Langdon; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Laura Maixner

Gustave Martel
Gustave Martel, 91, Bismarck, died April 21, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Thomas R. Feb. 12, 1910, in Lehr, the son of Carl and Sophia (Wahl) Martel. After his mother's death in 1915, Gust was raised and educated in Bowdle, S.D., by the Oster family. He married
Pauline Jundt on Sept. 20, 1931. Together they raised two sons, Raymond and LeRoy. They farmed at Eureka, S.D. until 1937 when they moved to Hazelton, residing and farming there until moving to Bismarck in 1953. Gust was employed as an electrician and then an auto mechanic until retiring in 1977. His wife, Pauline, died in 1965. In 1967, Gust married
Pauline Reiner, who preceded him in death in 1985. Gust then married
Dorothy Storm in 1986. Gust enjoyed repairing automobiles with his son, Ray, and loved working in his yard. He was an active and involved member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bismarck. Thirty years ago, Gust wired the Zion Lutheran Church when it was built and installed the organ chimes, which he was especially proud of. Gust is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his son and daughter-in-law, Raymond and Betty Martel, Bismarck; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; his stepdaughter, Judy Dehne, Bismarck; his stepson, Gerald York, Garrison; and many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sister; two brothers; and his son, LeRoy.
John Page
John M. Page, 95, Bismarck, died April 20, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday and one hour before services, all at the funeral home.
Clifford Rau
Clifford E. Rau died April 21, 2001, in a Fargo hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest April 17. He never regained consciousness. Cliff was born
to Edward and Emma Klein Rau, Sept. 9, 1931, at Ashley. He grew up and attended school in Ashley, where he was active in sports, music and the church. He married
Geraldine Hoffman in Ashley on July 26, 1950. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past summer. Cliff attended Jamestown College, graduating in 1953, with a bachelor of science degree in business education and physical education. In 1961, he received his master of arts degree in elementary and secondary school administration from Northern State College in Aberdeen, S.D. He taught business at McHenry High School from 1953-1956, and served as principal, basketball and baseball coach. In 1956, he accepted a teaching position at Hankinson, initially as a business teacher, coach and physical education instructor. He served as principal from 1957-1961, when he assumed the position of superintendent, a position he held until his retirement in 1990. Cliff worked with summer youth and swimming programs. He played Legion, college and amateur baseball. He was a charter member of the Lions Club, the golf club, and Calvary Lutheran Church in Hankinson. He held district, regional and state offices in the North Dakota Association of School Administrators. In 1966, he was awarded a Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contributions to education, his community, and his church by the Wahpeton Jaycees. After his retirement in 1990, Cliff and Geri moved to Fargo. He worked part-time for the Fargo-Moorhead Convention and Visitor's Bureau, and was active in Hope Lutheran Church, where he served on the Church Council. He helped coach his grandson's summer baseball and FM football teams. He enjoyed attending their grandchildren's athletic activities and music performances. He was also an avid Spartan, Bison and Redhawk fan. Cliff is survived by his wife, Geri; one son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Keith and Debbie Rau, Fargo; his grandchildren, Nicole and Matt Rau; a brother and sister-in-law, Myron and Jerri Rau, Mesa, Ariz.; one sister, June Rau Mueller, St. Louis, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant son, Randy. The family prefers memorials to Hope Lutheran Church Memorial Fund. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hope Lutheran Church, North Campus, with burial in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Ashley, at a later date. (Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo)

Oct. 4, 1920, at Linton, the daughter of Lucas and Elizabeth (Werlinger) Bachmeier, and was raised in the Newell, S.D. area. Cecelia married
Andrew Mathern on Nov. 13, 1939, in Newell. He died on March 8, 1957. Following his death, she raised her children in Aberdeen. Cecelia married
Dan Schatz on Sept. 23, 1965, in Aberdeen, S.D. and they then moved to Bismarck. Cecelia is survived by her husband, Dan; one son, Andrew Mathern, Minneapolis; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Elizabeth and John Pittarelli, Des Moines, Iowa, Mary Jane and Albert Andres, Medina, Joan Frances and Wesley Trittin, Hankinson, Alice Marie and Alvin Vetter, Moffit, and Beverly Jean Bleken, Grand Forks; five stepchildren and their spouses, George, Mandan, Stan and Helen, Fargo, Tony and Gail, Mandan, Maggie Bayni, Mott, and Joe and Beverly, Bismarck; 25 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four sisters and their spouses, Ann and Francis, Betty, Agnes and Carl, and Joann; three brothers and their spouses, Joe, Luke, and Joan and Ray; and a sister-in-law, Magdalena Bachmeier. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Andrew; one daughter, Geraldine; two sons-in-law, Glenn Bleken and Leslie N. Banyai; one brother, Michael Bachmeier; and one brother-in-law, Daniel Rapue.
Ruth Schlafmann
TURTLE LAKE -- Ruth A. Schlafmann, 76, Turtle Lake, died April 20, 2001, in the Turtle Lake hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Turtle Lake Baptist Church, with the Rev. Graham Kern officiating. Burial will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon-8 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Ruth Alice Kapanke was born
Jan. 30, 1925, at rural Ruso, to Emil and Minnie (Look) Kapanke. She grew up on her parent's farm southeast of Ruso, where she attended rural school. As a young woman she did domestic work for area farm wives. She married
Albert Schlafmann on Dec. 14, 1941, at his parent's rural home near Turtle Lake. They lived and farmed five miles southeast of Turtle Lake until October 1978 when they retired and moved into Turtle Lake. Ruth and Albert collected antiques and ran the Schlafmann Museum for 20 years. It was a hobby they both enjoyed. She taught herself to crochet and had made each grandchild and afghan. She also enjoyed bowling as a hobby. She loved having her family around her and in later years enjoyed feeding and watching the squirrels and birds on her deck. She was a member of Turtle Lake American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, Albert; two daughters and sons-in-law, Beaverly and Milton "Lefty" Walcker, Underwood, and Dianne and Eugene Bossert, Park River; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Burnett, and Rodney and Linda, all of Turtle Lake, Dennis and Verdeen, Goodrich, and Leon and Lori, Hawley, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one brother, Evenor Kapanke, Underwood; five sisters, Frances Grueneich, Bismarck, Cerena Gill and Beatrice Kapanke, both of San Diego, Calif., Delores Nothdurft, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Lametta Fawcett, Idaho State; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; and two sisters.

Jason A. Edinger, 27, McIntosh, S.D., died April 21, 2001, near McIntosh as a result of a motor vehicle accident.
