Thomas Crouse
Thomas R. Crouse, 91, Bismarck, died April 17, 2001, in a local hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Rick Fossum officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, with military rites by VFW Post 1326. Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church. Feb. 5, 1910, in Jamestown, to Isaac and Ida (Trinder) Crouse. Thomas, "Tommy," graduated from Jamestown High School in 1929 and received his B.A. from Jamestown College in 1934. He was an outstanding athlete for both the Blue Jays and the Jimmies. He also attended UND and Wahpeton School of Science. He taught and coached in Mohall and later International Falls, Minn., and Little Falls, Minn. He married
Marion Strutz April 11, 1936, in Bismarck. He received his M.A. from the University of Kentucky where he studied with the legendary Adolph Rupp. After Pearl Harbor Tom enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was commissioned for four years as a Lieutenant aboard a ship in the South Pacific. He then returned to teaching and coaching at Westman College in LeMars, Iowa, and served as the local golf pro. He started his independent insurance agency in Waukesha, Wis., before returning to Bismarck in 1956. He was appointed Superintendent of the State Training School in Mandan until 1963. Tom was a salesman for Curtis Publishing Company and the Perfect School Plan until retirement in 1975. Tom and Marion then divided their time between South Texas, Bismarck and Lake Isabel. Tom was member of McCabe United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge 132 in Bismarck, Scottish Rite, El Zagel Shrine, Mandan Indians, VFW, Elks, American Legion and Sigma Chi Fraternity. He is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Sally Myers, Port Aransas, Texas, and Joan and Bill Leifur, Lake Isabel and Naples, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, Carol and Mark Oberle, Conrad and Katherine Leifur, Laura and Lex Winger, Kristin Leifur, Tom and Jill Leifur, Mark Myers, Scott and Lu Myers, Mary and Mark Eggers, Jane and Brad Mann, Nancy and Greg DiDonna, Mia and Wade Felton and Susan Myers; 20 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dora Clark, Billings, Mont., and Irene Dockter, Bismarck; and extended family, Sharon and Richard Tschider and Al and Enid Sloan, all of San Clemente, Calif. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marion; two brothers, Leonard and Claude; and one sister, Lorene Daily. The family wishes to offer special thanks to special friends Kathy Fortman, Ella Beaton and Sister Ivo Schoch for their loving care. Memorials are requested to Elks Camp Grassick and Shrine Children's Hospitals.

Ephriam Elhard, 90, Bismarck, formerly of Jamestown, died April 17, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Jamestown. He is survived by his wife, Erna; four children, Elaine Tesky, Stafford, Va., Ellen Klenn, Bozeman, Mont., Ed Elhard, Salmon, Idaho, and Eileen Elhard, Bismarck; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Roland Hagen
Roland Knute Hagen, 87, 122 W. Coyote St., Mandan, died April 18, 2001, at his home. Graveside services will be held at noon Friday in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, with the Rev. Aug. 26, 1913, in Silverleaf, to Knute and Caroline (Gall) Hagen. He was raised and educated in Silverleaf, graduated from Ellendale High School and attended Normal Industrial School. On Dec. 19, 1945, he married
Inza Moore in Aberdeen, S.D. She died in 1963. Roland was a forklift operator for Georgia Pacific Paper Company in Portage, Mich., until he retired in 1975. After retirement Roland took pleasure in caring for his home and gardening. He was a Chicago Cubs and Bears fan and enjoyed studying railroad history and collecting memorabilia. He moved to Mandan in August 1994. He is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Viva Hagen-Pond and Vicky and Bruce Crabtree, all of Mandan; one son and daughter-in-law, Robin and Kathy Hagen, Plainwell, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Cameron Pond, Meagan Hagen-Pond, Chad, Christina and Matthew Crabree and Christopher and Regina Hagen; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Max and Ruby Hagen and Ruth Hagen, all of Ellendale; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Inza; his parents; five sisters; and three brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Chris; two sons, Tommy and Michael, both of Florida; one daughter, Rebecca LaFontaine, Minnesota; his mother, Edna LaFontaine, Washington; six brothers, Russell, Oregon, Clarence, Fargo, and Tony, Darrell, Guy and Robert, all of Washington; and two sisters, Irene Martin, South Dakota, and Ruth LaFontaine, Fargo.
Shirley Lang
Shirley Lang, 53, Carrollton, Texas, went to be with the Lord April 17, 2001, in a Dallas hospital after a brave battle with cancer. April 22, 1947, in Jamestown, the daughter of John and Emma Specht. She was raised and educated in the Tappen and Dickinson areas. On July 21, 1967, she married
Dennis Lang in Dickinson. They lived in Tappen until 1989 when they moved to Carrollton, Texas. Shirley enjoyed doing many things, playing with her grandson being her favorite. She crocheted, worked with ceramics, enjoyed her home and had a green thumb. She and her husband were members of Atonement Lutheran Church in Plano, Texas. She is survived by her loving husband, Dennis; her beloved son, Dennis Jr., and daughter-in-law, Patricia Lang; and one grandson, DJ, who was the light of her life. She is also mourned by her mother, Emma Specht, Gladstone; four sisters, Pearl Binder, Bismarck, Phyllis Stroh and her husband Don and Mavis Kainz and her husband Arnie, all of Dickinson, and Carolyn Dewall, Paris, Mich.; two brothers, Rolland Specht and his wife Irene, Billings, Mont., and Ed Specht and his wife Norma, Alvarado, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, John Specht. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. John's Lutheran Church, Tappen.

Al Splichal
BEULAH -- Al Splichal, 81, Beulah, died April 17, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Beulah, with the Rev. Charles Zins and Deacon Ervin Schneider officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. MDT today at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah, followed by a wake service at 8 p.m. MDT at the church. Albert A. Splichal was born
March 29, 1920, in Dickinson, a son of Joseph and Barbara (Kinzel) Splichal. He was raised and educated in Dickinson. During the late 1930s Al served in the CCC for a time. On Feb. 20, 1941, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the European theater of World War II, receiving a Purple Heart Medal for wounds. He received his honorable discharge Aug. 26, 1945. On Oct. 18, 1945, Al married
Pauline Kuntz in Dickinson. Al worked in the automotive parts business in Harvey for six months. in 1947 he went to work for Mann's Automotive and traveled for them for 10 years, and in 1957 became the manager of the Bowman branch. In 1975 he became the manager of the Beulah branch and they have lived there since. Al retired in 1984. Al was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Beulah, a life member of the Knights of Columbus and was a fourth degree Knight, had served as past state chairman of the Columbian Squires, a member of the Beulah Eagles Club, a life member of the Dickinson Elks a life member of the DAV and VFW, past state treasurer of the Knights of Columbus and past president of the N.D. Automotive Wholesalers Association. Al was a charter member of the Beulah Lions Club and a Melvin Jones Fellow, as well as having served as past president of the Bowman Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Pauline; three sons and daughters-in-law, Scott and Cindy, Indianapolis, Ind., Bob and Cindy, Wahpeton, and Gary and Mary, Grand Forks; seven grandchildren, Ryan, Eric, Brian, Laura, Jason, Ben and Beth Splichal; five sisters, Elsie Saiz, Three Forks, Mont., Martha Lips, Huron, S.D., Lillian Krance, Bismarck, Bridget Urlacher, New England, and Betty Morton, Cooke City, Mont.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Jerry and Frank. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

July 2, 1924, in Kenel, to Ben and Jane (Waters) Benedict Sr. She was raised and educated in Kenel and graduated from Fort Yates High School in 1943. She worked in a Hastings, Neb., ammunition depot making bullets. After the war she returned to Kenel and did housekeeping within the reservation. She married
Frank Vermillion and they had three sons. She married
Benton Don Sportsman March 26, 1976, in Denver, Colo. He died Aug. 19, 1998. She is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Michael Vermillion, Mobridge, S.D., Van and Susan Vermillion, Indigo, Calif., Frank and Angie Vermillion, Anchorage, Alaska, and Albert Hanson Defender, Fort Yates; one stepdaughter, Vonnie Cumm, Colorado Springs, Colo.; and 10 grandchildren. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Steve Shorter; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Becci Hill; one grandson, Michael Shorter and his wife Tiffany; one brother, Robert Hansen; three sisters, Alice Hill, Evelyn Tysen and Lilly Ellis; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Kenneth Hill and Albert Thysell; one grandson, Daniel Shorter; her parents; and two brothers, Clarence and Mark Hansen.
