Lucas Leingang
Lucas Leingang, 75, Tacoma, Wash., died March 31, 2001, in Tacoma. A memorial service and rosary were held April 5 at Visitation Catholic Church, Tacoma.
Luke was born
Nov. 3, 1925, in Morton County to Ralph and Christine (Beckler) Leingang. He was a proud veteran of WWII. He began his civil engineer profession with George Toman Engineers of Mandan. Luke and his wife Ruth moved to Washington in 1951 with their daughter Cindy and first son Blake. Luke was a prominent member of the business community in Tacoma for the past 50 years.
Luke was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus. He cherished his family and shared a passion for golf with family and friends. He was also an ardent North Dakota history buff, particularly of the Lewis and Clark and Custer eras.
Luke was a quiet, kind-hearted soul, loved and respected by all who knew him. He passed away peacefully with his caring family and friends byhis side.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ruth A. (Lehman) Leingang; one daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Ed Mcgrath; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Scott, Blayne and Pam and Jeff and Michelle, all of Tacoma, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Stacy, Dean, Craig, Michael, Devin, Kellen and Brayden; one brother and sister-in-law, William and Donna, Bismarck; and one sister, Lillian Gilbert, Lewiston, Idaho.
Luke will be missed by his many friends and extended family members.
The family prefers memorials to Visitation School and the American Cancer Society.
Elizabeth Michelson
FARGO -- Elizabeth Michelson, 75, Fargo, died April 7, 2001, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hope Lutheran Church, South Campus, Fargo. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery, Valley City.
She is survived by six children, Candace Anderson, Shawnee, Kan., Lynn Shenk, DeSoto, Kan., and Steven Michelson, Denise Ferrell, Owen Michelson and Dawn Michelson, all of Fargo; and one brother, Lloyd Kessler, Fargo. (Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo)
Patrick Mitzel
Patrick C. Mitzel, 71, Bismarck, died April 7, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending with Bismarck Funeral Home.
Nellie Olienyk
DICKINSON -- Nellie Olienyk, 84, Dickinson, died April 7, 2001, in Dickinson. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MDT Wednesday at Belfield Presbyterian Church, Belfield, with the Revs. Phillip Lohman and Ralph Sjursen officiating. Burial will be in Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Ukrainian Cemetery, Belfield.
Visitation will be held beginning at 9 a.m. MDT Tuesday at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to services at the church.
Nellie Olienyk was born
Feb. 20, 1917, in Velna, Alberta, Canada, the daughter of Jack and Malania Haluzak. As an infant, she moved with her parents to the Wilton area, where she grew up and attended school. Nellie started working at an early age cleaning homes.
Nellie became involved with Ukrainian dancing and met Jim Olienyk. They were married
Oct. 13, 1935, in Wilton. Jim and Nellie moved to the Belfield area, where they farmed and raised their family.
After the death of her husband, Nellie was married
to Bill Chruszch. They lived north of Belfield. When Bill passed away, she moved into Belfield where she made her home until 2000, when she moved into the Evergreen Inn in Dickinson.
Nellie enjoyed crocheting, gardening, sewing and traveling, especially her trip to the Ukraine and the Holy Land.
Nellie was a member of Belfield Presbyterian Church, American Legion Auxiliary and Silver-Haired Legislators. She volunteered for the Hospital Auxiliary and Pastoral Care at the Hospital.
She is survived by three sons, James D. (Edna) Olienyk, Barling, Ark., Paul J. (Charlotte) Olienyk, Fort Smith, Ark., and Daniek M. Olienyk, New Salem; three daughters, Betty (Bill) Sprynczynatyk and Deborah Gross, both of Bismarck, and Ruth (Larry) Radebaugh, Belfield; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Rose Duma and Mary Sherman, both of Bismarck.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Jim Olienyk and Bill Chruszch; one daughter, Beverly; two brothers, Sam and Joseph Haluzak; and one sister, Eva Boozenny.
A memorial has been established for the Belfield Presbyterian Church and the Ann Carlsen School in Jamestown.
Viola Rittel
Viola Edna Rittel, 70, Bismarck, died April 7, 2001, in a Bismarck care center after a long courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Bradley Stoltenow officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, and will continue for one hour prior to services at the church.
Viola Kaiser was born
June 16, 1930, in Driscoll, the daughter of Fredrick and Katherine (Braunstadter) Kaiser. Her family later moved to Bismarck, where she attended Bismarck High School.
Viola married
Arthur Rittel Sept. 2, 1949, in Bismarck. She had numerous jobs and worked for the North Dakota National Guard OSC for over 20 years.
Viola enjoyed crocheting, knitting, puzzles and especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law, Fredrick and Teresa Rittel, Minot, and David Rittel, Douglas and Bert Rittel and James and Leann Rittel, all of Bismarck; six grandchildren; Susan Rittel, Robby Rittel, Jason and Jennifer Mayher and Mikayla and McKenzie Rittel; three sisters, Louise Brown, Bismarck, Anna Marie Webb, Tacoma, Wash., and Katherine Rittel, Mandan; one brother and sister-in-law, Eddie and Darlene Kaiser, Bismarck; and her special friend, Bobbie Jo Vetter.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; her parents; and seven brothers.
Esther Tovsrud-Cohenour
RUGBY -- Esther Tovsrud-Cohenour, 96, Rugby, formerly of Leeds, died April 7, 2001, in a Rugby medical center. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

She is survived by her son, Duke, Lakeville, Minn.; and daughter, Beth, Rosemount, Minn.
Verlyn Bauer
Verlyn M. (Kendall) Bauer, 55, Mandan, died April 8, 2001, at her home after a long battle with cancer. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Duey Heid officiating. Burial will be in Moffit Cemetery, Moffit. Visitation will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home and will continue for one hour prior to services. Verlyn was born
Dec. 27, 1945, in Bismarck, the twin daughter of Allen (Babe) and Stella (Larsen) Kendall. She was raised in Moffit and attended school in Moffit and Hazelton. She married
Melvin Bauer May 30, 1964, in Moffit. They moved to Seattle in 1966. They later moved back to Bismarck in 1970. Verlyn had various jobs including waitressing at the Drumstick Cafe and the Bismarck Airport. She also did housekeeping at the Ramada Inn, but spent most of her time as a housewife. Verlyn enjoyed spending summers at their lakeside cabin. Her hobbies were bingo, plastic canvas, arts and crafts. She is survived by her husband, Melvin; one son and daughter-in-law, Dirk and Leora Bauer, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Darcie and Mitch Saville, Bismarck; four grandchildren, Serina and Matthew Bauer, Bryan Schmidkunz and Casey Saville; one brother, Edward and Margaret Kendall, Minot; two sisters, her twin Verna and Dwaine Payne, Moreland, Idaho, and Margie Nieland, Bismarck; one sister-in-law, Darlene Kendall, Bismarck; many nieces and nephews; and her special friend, Urla Lehmann. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; one brother, Roger Kendall; and two brothers-in-law. The family extends a sincere thank you to Becky V. and Kathleen S. and the rest of the St. Alexius Hospice Team. Audrey Davy
NEW TOWN -- Audrey Davy, New Town, died April 9, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Servies were held Thursday at Four Bears Community Center, New Town, with burial in St. Anthony's Cemetery, Mandaree. She was born
to Sarah and James Hall Sr. at Elbowoods. She was raised on the Fort Berthold Reservation and attended elementary and high school at Elbowoods. With the flooding of the Garrison Dam, the family moved to Mandaree. Audrey married
Bill Davy at Watford City. They lived in New Town. Audrey was employed for 33 years with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Three Affiliated Tribes Social Services Program until the time of her death. She is survived by her husband, Bill; one son, Esley Thorton Jr., Bismarck; three daughters, Camilla Gosnell, Daphne, Alabama, and Jamie Thorton, New Town; four brothers, Leland Hall Sr., James Hall Jr., Dickinson, Merval Hall, and Ed Hall, New Town; four sisters, Roszella Little Soldier, Golden Valley, Evelyn Banks, Richmond, Calif., Flora Lubke, and Dena Bruce, New Town; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Alice Day

Sept. 2, 1950, at Bullhead, S.D., to Carl Village Center and Viola Crow Necklace. Alice attended Pierre Boarding School, Fort Yates High School, and graduated from Bear Lake High School, Montpelier, Idaho, in 1969. She received her associate of applied science degree at Sitting Bull College, associate of science degree, and finally her bachelor of general studies degree from Minot State University in January 2001. Alice began sharing her life with Claude Francis Giroux in 1975. They established their home in Fort Yates for 14 years. In 1989, Claude passed away. Alice raised seven children and attended college fulltime. In 1994 she married
Richard Grey Day. Alice was employed at Prairie Knights Casino, Oahe Group Home and Fort Yates School District. She loved working with children and has many adopted sons and daughters throughout the Indian Country. Alice enjoyed quilting, beadwork, making traditional outfits for her children and grandchildren, and traveling with her husband and children to powwows. She was strong-minded as well as intelligent, and an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She celebrated 24 years of sobriety and was a wonderful role model to her children. Alice is survived by her husband, Richard Grey Day, and regretfully leaves seven wonderful children; four daughters, Victoria BirdsHead, Savage, Minn., Leaf and Chantelle Giroux and Lakota-Sage Grey Day; three sons, Vance, Claude "Sonny" and Hunter Giroux, all of Fort Yates. Her children always came first in her life. She is also survived by three sisters, Judy and Gwen Village Center, Fort Yates, Nancy Glenn, Bremerton, Wash.; one brother, Frank Witte Jr.; one brother-in-law, Joseph See the Elk; 17 grandchildren, Sierra, Alex, Sheyenne, Taneille, Erica, Christian, Wallace, Shawn, Tamarik, Stephan, Austin, Terrell, Kierra, Uriah, Ellis, Chelsea and Courtney. She is preceded in death by her parents, Carl Village Center and Viola Crow Necklace; her husband, Claude F. Giroux III; one sister, Faye Crow Necklace and one infant daughter. Leonard Gruchalla
Leonard E. Gruchalla, 79, Mandan, died April 10, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Revs. Albert Leary and John Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Saturday and 6-9 p.m. Sunday at Bismarck Funeral Home, where a rosary and prayer service will begin at 8 p.m. Sunday. Nov. 20, 1921, in Fried, to August and Mary (Wieczorek) Gruchalla. He attended high school in Jamestown and served in the North Dakota National Guard at Jamestown. Len married
Evelyn Alme in Fried on Feb. 24, 1943, and they farmed at Fried for six years. Later he went to work for Dan Dugan Transport of Jamestown while living in Cleveland. In 1964, Len moved to Mandan to continue working for Dan Dugan until he retired in 1975 because of ill health. Len enjoyed many activities: fishing, hunting, bowling, golfing, playing cards with friends, and spending time in his garden. Len belonged to the Eagles, Knights of Columbus, and was a member of Christ the King Parish in Mandan. Len is survived by his wife of 58 years, Evelyn; three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Ramona, Jamestown, Robert and Doreen, Minto, and Leonard "Rocky" Jr. and Darlene, Bismarck; four daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Justin Gartner, Denver, Colo., Debbie and Robert Holmberg, Denver, Diana and Dan Nagel, Bismarck, and Kathy and Dan Wagner, Mandan; 18 grandchildren; nine grandchildren; one brother, Andrew, Tacoma, Wash.; and one sister-in-law, Mildred Gruchalla, Jamestown. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Sylvester, Al, Edmund and Pete; one sister, Margaret; and his parents.
E. Lowell Jasper
ROBINSON -- E. Lowell Jasper, 68, Robinson, died April 9, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Robinson Methodist Church, with James Jasper, presiding elder, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Robinson. April 10, 1932, in Woodworth, the son of Emil and Edna (Suckut) Jasper. He was raised and attended schools in Robinson. He attended school at Valley City State before teaching country school for one year. Lowell married
Janrose White in BIsmarck May 31, 1957. He continued to farm and ranch with his father prior to purchasing the farm in 1960. Lowell enjoyed his farm and was particularly proud of his livestock. The Saturday before his passing, Lowell was anxiously awaiting the arrival of six quarter horse colts of Blackburn breeding. He completed his purchase of the colts as a remembrance and legacy for his family. Lowell was a member of the Lions and Eagles Club. He is survived by his wife, Janrose; his daughters, Candace Jasper, Robinson, Jodi Jasper and Tammy Boger and her husband Dan, all of Bismarck, and Janeanne Bischke and her husband Brad, Watertown, S.D.; his sons, James and his wife Sheryl, Erda, Utah, and Miles, Flasher; his grandchildren, Bobbie Jo, Josh, Boyd, Eric, Austin, Jennifer, Matthew, Alexis and Hayley; his great-granddaughter, Jasmine; and two brothers, Larry, Bismarck, and Keith, Minnesota. July 15, 1912, in Emmett, to Mathias and Olina (Belsheim) Hagge. She was raised on the family farm west of Garrison. She married
Norris Ovri, Aug. 27, 1950, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Emmett. They made their home in Riverdale and moved to Garrison in the late 1950s. She was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Emmett, and in later years, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garrison. She was an active member of Garrison Hospital Ladies Auxiliary for many years. She was a homemaker who always enjoyed baking and sewing. Her husband died in November 1988, and she moved to Mesa in 1991. Dagne is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Marlene Hagge, Mesa; and their children, Nancy Schaan and Marvin Hagge, both of Mesa, and Debbie Simmons, Chelan, Wash.; her nieces, Grace Davidson, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Diane Ackerman and Linda Masseth, both of Bismarck, Patty Harrison, Lynnwood, Wash.; her nephews, David Hendrickson, Stony Plain, Alberta, Canada, and Rodney Hagge, Everett, Wash.; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norris; one sister, Alma; and one brother, David.
