Margaret McDowell
Margaret McDowell, 77, Bismarck, and Scottsdale, Ariz., died April 18, 2000, in Scottsdale. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Art Scanson and Rick Fossum officiating. Margaret Hendrickson was born
Jan. 13, 1923, the daughter of John S. and Sadie (Noyes) Hendrickson, in Perth. She was raised in Leeds and Fargo. She married
Harley McDowell on June 9, 1945, in Fargo. They moved to Bismarck in 1948 and she and Harley started McDowell's Big Boy in 1953. They retired after 25 years in business. She was a homemaker and a member of McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, and Scottsdale United Methodist Church, and a member of PEO Sisterhood. She was a board member of the University of Mary, and active in the Bismarck Dakota Zoo Foundation, Medora Foundation, McDowell Dam Recreation Area, YMCA, University of North Dakota, Concordia College and many charitable organizations. She is survived by her husband, Harley; a sister, Joyce Harris, Provo, Utah; and several nieces and nephews. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)
Evelyn M. "Evy" Olsen
HETTINGER -- Evelyn M. "Evy" Olsen, 83, longtime Hettinger businesswoman and nurse, died Feb. 24, 2000, in the Hettinger hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Friday at Hettinger United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Scott Mendez-Andrews officiating. Allen McIntyre will offer the eulogy. Burial will be Saturday in Finley cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-7 p.m. Thursday at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger, and will continue at the church one hour before services. She is survived by her brothers, Arthur H. Olsen, Billings, Mont., Maynard A. Olson and Elmer J. "Bibs" Olson, both of Helena, Mont., and Robert C. Olson, Bowman; one sister, Adele Bennett, Bowman; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family prefers memorials to Hettinger Country Club and West River Regional Medical Center.
Mark C. Phelps
DICKINSON -- Mark C. Phelps, 39, Dickinson, died April 23, 2000, in his home of natural causes. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; two daughters, Laci and Haley, both at home; one son, Benjamin, at home; his parents, Donovan and Donna Phelps, Mesa, Ariz.; one brother, Patrick, Oakdale, Minn.; and two sisters, Stacey Wanovich and Samantha Phelps, both of Oakdale.
Ralph Stanton Thompson
Ralph Stanton Thompson, 75, 520 W. Ave. F, died April 21, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. today at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Ralph was born
Nov. 12, 1924, in Bismarck, to Arthur and Emma (Siverson) Thompson. He was raised and educated in Washburn and Bismarck, graduating from Bismarck High School and Jamestown College. Ralph served in the U.S. Navy as a gunner on merchant marine ships in the Mediterranean and Pacific Theaters. He moved back to North Dakota. After receiving his masters degree from University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, he married
Marjorie Mueller in Minneapolis in 1953 and started a family. At this time he pursued his interest in archeology. He has collections on loan at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Washburn and Fort Abraham Lincoln Museum Center. He was an expert on local archeology and cooperated with the Corps of Engineers and the North Dakota State Historical Society. He is survived by one son, Rod, Sunnyvale, Calif.; one sister and brother-in-law, Priscilla and Howard McClain, Washington, D.C.; and one brother and sister-in-law, Philip and Joy Thompson, Minneapolis. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; and infant sister, Lois; and one brother, Arthur Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to North Dakota State Historical Society or Trinity Lutheran Church.

Joseph A. Zich
MOTT -- Joseph A. Zich, 78, Mott, died April 22, 2000, in an Aurora, Colo., hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Thursday at St. Vincent's Catholic Church, Mott, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Margery; four sons, Richard, Coral Springs, Fla., Lawrence, Fargo, Dale, Mott, and Terrance, Macon, Ga.; one daughter, Patricia Hoyhtya, Fraser, Colo.; one stepson, Patrick O'Neil, Beulah; four stepdaughters, Penelope O'Neil, Elgin, Katherine Netzer, Bismarck, Tween Schnaidt, Aurora, Colo., and Judy Zich, Fargo; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandson; 12 step-grandchildren; and two sisters, Sister Agnes Zich, Merrill, Wis., and Rose Magelky. Jeanne Allan
Jeanne P. Allan, 80, Bismarck, died April 9, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending with Bismarck Funeral Home.
Verlyn Bauer
Verlyn M. (Kendall) Bauer, 55, Mandan, died April 8, 2001, at her home after a long battle with cancer. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Duey Heid officiating. Burial will be in Moffit Cemetery, Moffit.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and will continue for one hour prior to services.
Verly was born
Dec. 27, 1945, in Bismarck, the twin daughter of Allen (Babe) and Stella (Larsen) Kendall. She was raised in Moffit and attended school in Moffit and Hazelton. She married
Melvin Bauer May 30, 1964, in Moffit. They moved to Seattle, Wash., in 1966. They later moved back to Bismarck in 1970.
Verlyn had various jobs including waitressing at the Drumstick Cafe and the Bismarck Airport. She also did housekeeping at the Ramada Inn, but spent most of her time as a housewife.
Verlyn enjoyed spending summers at their lakeside cabin. Her hobbies were bingo, plastic canvas, arts and crafts.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin; one son and daughter-in-law, Dirk and Leora Bauer, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Darcie and Mitch Saville, Bismarck; four grandchildren, Serina and Matthew Bauer, Bryan Schmidkunz and Casey Saville; one brother, Edward and Margaret Kendall, Minot; two sisters, her twin Verna and Dwaine Payne, Moreland, Idaho, and Margie Nieland, Bismarck; one sister-in-law, Darlene Kendall, Bismarck; many nieces and nephews; and her special friend, Urla Lehmann.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; one brother, Roger Kendall; and two brothers-in-law.
Pauline Benz
Pauline Benz, 90, Mandan, died April 7, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Pauline was born
June 25, 1910, in Felsenburg, Russia, the daughter of Peter and Amilia (Gout) Stolz. She married
Anton Gress Oct. 6, 1931, in Russia. They immigrated to the United States in 1952. Anton died six months later. Pauline worked as a cook at the Patterson Hotel for 22 years. She married
George Benz in October 1962 in Bismarck. He died in 1993.
Pauline enjoyed crafts of all types and found great pleasure in giving them to the children and grandchildren she loved so dearly.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Betty Gress, Sun City, Ariz.; her daughters and sons-in-law, Eleanor and Gerald McCloskey and Eugenia (Ida) and Ray Ressler, all of Mandan, Katherine and Stan Brooks, Charlottesville, Va., and Helen Hittle, Billings, Mont.; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a special friend, Amelia Krenzel.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; one son, Adolph; one granddaughter, Paula Serfazo; her parents; her brothers and sisters; and one son-in-law, Lawrence Hittle.
Helen Camp
Helen Camp, 101, Willmar, Minn., whose life spanned three centuries and two millenniums, went home to be with Jesus April 8, 2001. A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Calvary Lutheran Church, Willmar.
Helen Mahlow was born
April 20, 1899, on a farm outside of Kerkhoven, Minn., and was one of six children. She married
Edward Camp Feb. 6, 1916. Together they raised seven children. Edward passed away in 1969. Helen had 18 grandchildren and many great and great-great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her deep and abiding faith in Jesus.
She is survived by three sons, Lowell (Rose) and Harry (Dolores), both of Bismarck, and Ed, Tennessee Ridge, Tenn.; and three daughters, Frieda Johnson (Don), Kerkhoven, Minn., Delpha Walrath (Nick), Willmar, Minn., and Marion Fitzpatrick, Federal Way, Wash.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; one son, Lynn; one son-in-law, Jim Fitzpatrick; one daughter-in-law, Jeanese Camp; and two grandchildren.
Audrey Davy
NEW TOWN -- Audrey C. Davy, New Town, died April 9, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Four Bears Community Center, New Town. Further arrangements are pending with Fulkerson Funeral Home, Watford City.
John Flemmer
NAPOLEON -- John C. Flemmer, 93, Napoleon, died April 8, 2001, in a Napoleon care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon. Burial will be held at a later date in the city cemetery.
He is survived by one daughter, Ruby Holtz, Banning, Calif.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Fred, College Place, Wash.
