Ronald William Kroh
Ronald William Kroh, 61, 1108 S. Frontier, Mandan, died Nov. 12, 2000, in a Minneapolis hospital while awaiting a heart transplant. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Mandan United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Phillips officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, rural Mandan. Ron was born
Oct. 17, 1939, the son of William and Helen (Mutschelknaus) Kroh on the family farm near Bluegrass. Ron left the family farm in March of 1962 to join the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Germany. He married
Sally Moser on Oct. 15, 1966, in Medina. Together they had one son, Erich. They moved to Mandan where Ron was a chef for many years, employed at Jerry's Supper Club, Red Fox Cafe and Dakota Farms until retirement in 1988. Ron spent many hours on various lakes and rivers fishing and enjoying the many sights and sounds of wildlife. He was also an accomplished gardener and participated in the Mandan farmers market. Part of his daily routine was going for coffee to visit and exchange stories. Ron was also know for his talented crochet work and enjoyed word find puzzle books. There was a special place in his heart for his only grandchild, Alexandra. Ron will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. Ron was a member of the AMVETS club. He is survived by his wife, Sally; one son, Erich and Geraldine Kroh, Mandan; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Delores and Vernon Martin, Hebron, and Margi and Don Blunt, Dickinson; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Margaret, Pueblo, Colo., Jerry and Shirley, Bismarck, Jack and Berdie, Dennis and Faye, all of Mandan; one granddaughter, Alexandra; and special friend, Jane Benz, Bismarck. Ron was preceded in death by his parents.

Annie Kubler, 90, Bismarck, died Nov. 14, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Feb. 8, 1970, in Mandan. She was raised and educated in Dickinson and Mandan, and graduated from Mandan High School in 1988. She was employed at Remco Software since 1989. Bobbie married
Curt Buresh on July 11, 1998, in Dickinson. Bobbie loved her dog, Bean, and enjoyed collecting Mickeys and snow globes. She enjoyed cooking and her flower garden. She is survived by her husband, Curt; her parents, Bob and Elaine McNeill, Dickinson; and her grandmother, Wilma Looyenga, Mandan. She was preceded in death by one brother, Brian.
Walter R. Ongstad
Walter R. Ongstad, 77, Bismarck, died Nov. 5, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jeff Tengesdal officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, rural Mandan. Visitation will be held at the church one hour before services. Walter was born
June 21, 1923, in Manfred, to Oscar and Christine (Thune) Ongstad. He attended grade school in Manfred and graduated from Fessenden High School. He entered the U.S. Army Air Force in 1943 during World War II and was discharged in 1946. Walter graduated from University of North Dakota with a degree in business education in 1950. He married
Astrid Bratten in 1951 in Tioga. Walter began working for North Dakota Job Service in Dickinson in 1951. He worked for them in Williston and Minot. He then became office manager in Mandan. In 1961, Walter moved to the Bismarck office where he worked with the handicapped, was a systems analyst, program specialist, and ended his career working with Job Corp. He was past president of North Dakota Square Dancers Association, Sons of Norway and Toastmasters. Walter was a past chairman of Good Shepherd Church Council and also served on the mayors committee for employment of the handicapped. He was very involved in Boy Scouts and received the Baden Powell award from them. Walt enjoyed many hobbies, among them was growing many beautiful roses, and he loved to share these with others. He enjoyed camping with his friends and family. Camping at the Hostfest was a special treat and he enjoyed attending the Hostfest every year with friends. In his younger years he enjoyed woodworking and hunting. He always loved fishing and watching the Vikings play football every Sunday. Lately he enjoyed going to the high school football games with a very special friend. Walt enjoyed traveling and was able to go to Norway, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii. But, Walt's favorite was getting out of North Dakota in the winter and traveling to his home in Arizona. Coin collecting was a hobby he carried with him throughout his life and he was pleased to pass it on to his children and grandchildren. His family and friends were very important to him. He really enjoyed when his children and grandchildren could all get together. Walt is survived by his wife of 49 years, Astrid; one daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Craig Harper, Devils Lake; one son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Kathy, Cavalier; 10 grandchildren; and two brothers, Orvin, California, and Duane, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister. Memorials are preferred to Anne Carlson School for Children in Jamestown, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or American Heart Association. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth; three sons, Leonard, Grand Junction, Colo., Ernie, Bowman, and Larry, Scranton; two daughters, Susan Bourn, Ft. Henry Waltz
FARGO -- Henry "Hank" Waltz, 83, Fargo, died in his sleep at his winter home in Apache Junction, Ariz., on Nov. 13, 2000. Henry was born
at the family home in McClusky, on Oct. 4, 1917. He was raised on the family farm by his parents, John and Josephine Waltz, along with his 13 brothers and sisters. His parents were both born
in South Russia in 1885 and 1888. He attended school in a one-room schoolhouse which now resides on the family farm. Henry moved to Fargo where he met and married
Gladys Nelson of Ada, Minn. Henry served with the U.S. Army in World War II. After the war he worked as a medical technologist at the Fargo Veterans Hospitaal for 38 years until his retirement in 1980. Henry was very involved in the YMCA youth program and was a chaperone for the teen dances for many years. He loved upland game hunting with his son, Mark, into his 80s. He was an avid golfer with a wild swing and a power punch. He played horseshoes competitively in league play and tournaments until 1999, earning his favorite nickname, Hank the Crank, bestowed up him by his grandson, Mike. Even when he was 80, he was still throwing ringers 45 percent of the time. Some of his other favorite pastimes included wood carving, gardening, painting, building bird houses, making diamond willow walking canes, and backpacking in the Superstition Mountains looking for "desert roses" to make jewelry. Henry always had an infectious smile, tons of energy, a little boy prankster attitude, and a heart of gold. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends, but welcomed by the Almighty high above. He is survived by his wife, Gladys; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marlene and Gordon Jones, and Kathy and Laurie McMerty; his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Susan; his grandchildren, Susan, Michael, Sarah, Matthew, Nicole, Marc, Tyler and Michael; and his brothers and sisters, Jack, Hilda, Fred, Helen, Frieda, Paul, Arthur, Marie and Josephine. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, Fargo, with burial in Veterans Memorial Cemetery, rural Mandan at 11:30 a.m. Monday. Visitation will be held at the church two hours before services.

Daniel Kenneth Baumgartner
Daniel Kenneth Baumgartner, 46, Bismarck, died Nov. 15, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital after a long battle with esophageal cancer. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a rosary and vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service. April 29, 1954 in Strasburg, the son of Pius and Ann (Jochim) Baumgartner. He was raised and educated in Strasburg, graduating from Emmons Central High School in 1972. On Sept. 8, 1978 he married
Roberta Leier. He graduated from Bismarck State College in 1980 and from the University of Mary in 1982 with a business degree. He worked at Office Systems from 1980 to 2000. Daniel loved people, music, riding motorcycle and telling stories; making people laugh. He played in a band for 30 years. He is survived by his wife, Roberta; his parents, Pius and Ann Baumgartner, Strasburg; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alois and Madge Leier, Linton; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. Jim and Ellen Baumgartner, Dickinson, Richard and Sandra Baumgartner, Las Vegas, and Allen and Ofelia Baumgartner, Bismarck; six brothers-in-law and five sisters-in-law, Bruce Leier, Linton, Terry and Patty Leier, Marion, Iowa, Larry and Rosiland Leier, Hague, Paul and Sheila Leier, Fargo, Charles and Joleen Leier, Linton; and Mark and Bonnie Leier, Fargo; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Baumgartner and Mr. and Mrs. John Jochim.

Lucille Gray, 87, 3406 Dominion Street, Bismarck, formerly of Steele, died Nov. 15, 2000, at her residence. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at First Presbyterian Church, Steele, with the Rev. Ben Dove officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Steele. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue one hour before services at the church. May 21, 1913 at Donnybrook, N.D., to Robert and Mary Elizabeth (Hamilton) Gray. She was raised and educated in Donnybrook, attending country schools and graduating from Donnybrook High School in 1932. She worked at the Federated Store in Steele and for many years at Mullen Drug Store. In 1966 she opened the clothing store "Lucy's Shop" which she operated until her retirement. She moved to the Edgewood Vista in Bismarck on Feb. 1, 2000. Lucille is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Edene and Gerry Hoffer, Bismarck; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Dorothy and Wade Adams, Truth or Consequences, N.M., Evelyn Adams, Steele, and Leola Dettloff, San Luis Obispo, Calif.; three grandchildren, Todd Hoffer, Bismarck, Lori Hoffer, Chicago, and Lisa (Tony) Newman, Bethesda, Md.; two great-grandchildren, Joshua and Sarah Hoffer; several nieces and nephews; special nephews, Bob Dettloff and Tom Adams; and special friend, Lance Moch. She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mary Gray; and two brothers-in-law, Harris Adams and Elmer Dettloff.
LeRoy Hochhalter
REGAN -- LeRoy Hochhalter, 66, Regan, died Nov. 15, 2000, at his home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sunne Lutheran Church, Wilton, with the Rev. Paul Schauer officiating. Burial will be in Regan Cemetery. Public visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church. June 29, 1934 in rural Wilton, the son of Andrew and Phillipena (Buchholz) Hochhalter. He married
Myrna Manning on July 22, 1955 at Sunne Lutheran Church. The couple lived in Bismarck until LeRoy entered the United States Army in 1956, serving at Fort Leonard, Mo., Korea and Fort Riley, Kan., and was discharged in 1958. They lived in Harvey and Leeds, where he worked in the lumber business. They returned to Regan in 1968 where they farmed. He was active in the Masons and was a charter member and builder of the Leeds Golf Course. He was a Cub Scout leader, member of the Sunne Lutheran Church Board, Regan School Board, Regan Elevator Board, Wilton Fire District Board, Estherville Township Board and was a lifetime member of the VFW in Bismarck. LeRoy is survived by his wife, Myrna; two daughters and one son-in-law, Brenda and Greg Stallman, Hillsboro, and their two sons, Brady and Jace, and Bonnie Hochhalter, Fort Worth, Texas; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Norma, Wilton, and their children, Vicki and her husband Mike Hubbard and their daughter, Olivia, Becki and her husband Cameron Boechler and their two children, Seth and Hayle, David and Gina, and Jay and Jeanne, Barnesville, Minn., and their children Zachary, Lisa and Bradley; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Lillian Schafer, and Ada and Richard John, all of Bismarck, and Norma John, Mandan; two brothers, Eugene and Wesley, both of Bismarck; and two sisters-in-law, Rose Hochhalter, Mandan, and Magdalena Hochhalter, Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Ted, Marvin and Robert; and three sisters, Elsie Fischer, Ruth Kautzman and Darlene Watson. The family prefers memorials to the Sunne Lutheran Church or the Salvation Army.
