Jennie Jochim
Jennie Jochim, 96, Medcenter One Care Center, Mandan, died Nov. 12, 2000 in the care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Jennie (Barth) Jochim, the daughter of Thoma and Audenia (Schmidt) Barth was born
March 21, 1905 in Fallon. Jennie was raised and educated in Fallon attending rural schools. On Feb. 15, 1927, she married
Conrad Jochim in Fallon. They moved to Flasher in 1955. Conrad died in 1975 and in 1976, Jennie moved to Mandan. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and John Sites, Portland, Ore., and Marilyn and Don Bernhardt, Torrance, Calif.; two sons-in-law, Roger Gustin, Billings, Mont., and Ed Hoffman, Chandler, Ariz.; 22 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren; one brother, George Barth, Oregon; one daughter-in-law, Bobbie Jochim, Bismarck; seven sisters, Christine Helbling, Rose Ternes and Anna Barth, all of Mandan, Margaret Rasmussen, Helena, Mont., and Katheryn Vicena, Eva Dartt and Cecelia Barth, all in California. Jennie was known for her "green thumb" with her garden and flowers. She enjoyed crocheting and baking, especially bladginda. Jennie loved to go out for lunch and shopping. She enjoyed her days of fishing with Conrad, soap operas and traveling. Laura Kist
Laura Kist, 89, Mandan, died Nov. 13, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Revs. Paul Fiske and Richard Hagestuen officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Thursday, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. A Women of the Moose chapel service will begin at 7 p.m. There will be no visitation at the church. Laura Evangaline Fallgren was born
on Jan. 15, 1911 near Sims, the daughter of Olaf and Louise (Swartz) Fallgren. Raised and educated in Lyons, she moved with her family to Spokane where she was employed with the Spokane and Eastern Bank. She returned to North Dakota when she married
Fred Kist on June 5, 1934 in Glendive, Mont. They moved to Mandan where they were co-owners and managers of Kist Livestock Auction and Kist Meat Market. Laura loved to travel with friends and family. She also enjoyed cooking, baking and playing cards, particularly pinochle. Laura is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Jean and Harold Rebenitsch, Grand Forks, and Mary and Mike Burnette, Spokane; two sons and their wives, Bill and Mary Sue and Freddie Jr. and Ellen, all of Mandan; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Langeloh, Spokane. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, who died on Nov. 30, 1968; five sisters and one brother.
Ronald William Kroh
Ronald William Kroh, 61, 1108 S. Frontier, Mandan, died Nov. 12, 2000 in a Minneapolis hospital while awaiting a heart transplant. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at Mandan United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Phillips, officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, rural Mandan. Oct. 17, 1939 the son of William and Helen (Mutschelknaus) Kroh on the family farm near Bluegrass. Ron left the family farm in March of 1962 to join the U.S. Army where he was stationed in Germany. He married
Sally Moser on Oct. 15, 1966 in Medina. Together they had one son, Erich. They moved to Mandan where Ron was a chef for many years, employed at Jerry's Supper Club, Red Fox Cafe and Dakota Farms until retirement in 1988. Ron spent many hours on various lakes and rivers fishing and enjoying the many sights and sounds of wild life. He was also an accomplished gardener and participated in the Mandan farmers market. Part of his daily routine was going for coffee to visit and exchange stories. Ron was also know for his talented crochet work and enjoyed word find puzzle books. There was a special place in his heart for his only grandchild, Alexandra. Ron will be deeply missed by his family and many friends. Ron was a member of the AMVETS club. He is survived by his wife, Sandy; one son, Erich and Geraldine Kroh, Mandan; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Delores and Vernon Martin, Hebron, and Margi and Don Blunt, Dickinson; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Margaret, Pueblo, Colo., Jerry and Shirley, Bismarck, Jack and Birdie, Dennis and Fay, all of Mandan; one granddaughter, Alexandra; and special friend, Jane Benz, Bismarck. Joseph Magelki
Joseph "Joe" Magelki, 85, Mandan, died Nov. 11, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mandan, with the Revs. Leonard Eckroth and Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery with military rites provided by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 707 and American Legion Post No. 40. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service. Joseph John was born
on July 8, 1915, in Mandan, the son of Paul and Celestine (Paul) Magelki. Raised and educated in Mandan, he married
Elizabeth M. Froelich on Oct. 8, 1938, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mandan. He served for two years with the 242nd Rainbow Division in France, Germany and Austria during World War II. Discharged in 1947, he returned to Mandan where he was employed for nine years at Western Auto Company, the Ford Garage, in Mandan, as serviceman. After working for a year at Kinzel Tire Shop, he began his 32 years of service with the Mandan Police Department, retiring as sergeant. Many will remember Joe as he regularly walked his beat. Joe was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the North Dakota Peace Officers Association. Joe enjoyed fishing with his wife and grandchildren. He was also wellknown for repairing fishing rods and reels for friends. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his daughter and son-in-law, June and William Schreiner, Mandan; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Minnie Ringquist and Helen Fettig and her husband, Ray, all of Fargo; and special friends, Dennis and Bonnie Repnow, and Bob Poppe. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Shirley Kautzman; two brothers, Nick and Christ; and two sisters, Veronica and Ann Magelki. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mandan. Gertrude Monson
FLASHER -- Gertrude Monson, 89, Flasher, died Nov. 13, 2000 in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Friday, at American Evangelical Lutheran Church, Flasher, with the Rev. Ken Trana officiating. Burial will be in Fairhill Cemetery, Flasher. Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. Thursday, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. A service of remembrance will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Friday. on Dec. 17, 1910 south of New Salem, the daughter of Richard and Anna (Reisner) Petermann. Raised and educated there, she attended business college in Dickinson prior to her marriage to Gilbert Monson on June 20, 1934 at the Bethel Church, south of New Salem. They lived on a farm north of Flasher before moving to a farm one mile east of Flasher. In 1960, they moved into town, where she was employed as a cook at the Flasher and Meyers Cafe and also at the school cafeteria for 26 years. Gertrude read her Bible every night and was always willing to lend a helping hand to others. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, embroidery and cooking. She was an active member of the women's circle at the church and was a lifetime member of the Flasher Homemakers Club, an affiliation lasting more than 60 years. She is survived by her three daughters and their husbands, Coletta and Ray Kuhn, Flasher, Marianne and Jim Soriano, Renton, Wash., and Lynette and Jim Schmeichel, Flasher; her son, Ronald and his wife, Barbara, Bismarck; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; her brother Carl, and his wife, Myrna, and her sister, Martha Morman and her husband, Fred, all of Mandan. James Patrie

Visitation will be held from 1-4 p.m. today at Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden, and 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, at the church. James W. Patrie, son of James E. and Della (Flaugher) Patrie, was born
Feb. 22, 1910 at the family farm near Heaton, where he was raised. He graduated from Heaton High School in 1929, where he enjoyed participating in oratory contests and was valedictorian of his class. While attending high school, he drove a horse drawn school bus. On Oct. 17, 1943, he was married
to Katherine C. Sherer in Stanley, Wis. They made their home in the Heaton area since. He farmed from his childhood years until his health no longer allowed him to participate in the actual farming operations. His name is "written in the land" and he remained a farmer at heart until his death. He was a member of Bowdon Community Church of God. He is survived by his wife, Katherine; two daughters, Carol (Ralph) Bishop, Dodge City, Kan., and Nina (Ray) Martin, Arthur; three sons, Loren (Patti), Bowdon, William (Marcia), Bismarck, and Charles (Amelia), York, Neb.; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Beulah (Kenneth) Long, Bowdon; and one nephew and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald and a brother who died in infancy. Sylvester J. Vonderheide
UNDERWOOD -- Sylvester J. Vonderheide, 91, Underwood, died Nov. 13, 2000 in the Underwood nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, at St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church, Underwood, with the Revs. Ed Korte and James Ryan officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from noon-6 p.m. Thursday, at Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening at the church. Music will be provided by Lori Ferguson, organist. Honorary pallbearers will be Curt Radke, Roland Koenig, Meiny Schock and Gene Utecht. Active pallbearers will be Layton Freborg, Hank Rasmussen, Harley Hassler, Harold Lutz, Marvin Schuh and Burnell Johnson. Sylvester Jerome Vonderheide was the youngest child of Louis and Elizabeth (Kleespies) Vonderheide. He was born
March 13, 1909 at their farm near Reliance, S.D. He had six sisters older than he. In 1914, the family moved to Dubuque, Iowa where he entered the first grade. In 1917, they moved to Richmond, Minn., where his father had a general store. Two years later, his father purchased a clothing store in Morris, Minn., and in 1920, they moved to St. Cloud, Minn. In December of 1922, Syl and the family joined his father at Turtle Lake, where they managed a farmers Coop store. Syl graduated from Turtle Lake High School in 1927. He loved sports and was an outstanding athlete on the high school basketball team. Following graduation, he attended St. John's University at Collegeville, Minn., where he played first-base for the baseball team and guard on the basketball squad for two years. During the summer months at Turtle Lake, he played baseball with the city team. The Vonderheide family moved to Underwood in 1930 where they owned and operated the Outlaw Trading Company. On June 15, 1933, Syl married
Marie Paulson, the love of his life, at a home wedding performed by Father William Wigger. They made their home in Underwood. To this union were born
three children: Jerome Lee, James Dean and Jean Marie. In 1946, Syl purchased the Outlaw Trading Company from his sisters. In 1953, he purchased the Koenig building and started Von's Clothing. In 1962, the grocery part of the business was sold to Carl Radke and Syl devoted full time to Von's Clothing. Syl followed in his father's footsteps by active in the promotion of anything good for the city. He was always ready and willing to help promote any good cause -- especially school activities. He rarely missed any athletic events, school plays or concerts and truly believed that ... to have a friend one must be one. He was an active member of the St. Bonaventure's Catholic Church and directed and sang in the choir. He also sang for many weddings and funerals and sang first tenor in a men's quartet. He was active in Commercial Club holding several offices over the yeras and served as a volunteer fireman for the city. In 1948, he was approached by the school to coach the junior basketball team, which he did until 1952. Both of his sons had the privilege to be involved with him as their coach. Syl served on the advisory council for the Boy Scouts. He was a member of the Bismarck Elks Lodge. He was a referee for basketball games and was in demand throughout the state for his abilities. He was one of the founders of the Underwood Golf Course and remained active until recent years. Golf became his favorite pastime and playing in the Resorters Golf Tournament at Alexandria, Minn. was the highlight each year for him until his health began to fail. Syl was instrumental in the establishment of the Prairieview Nursing Home at Underwood and served on the board for many years. Marie died on Oct. 2, 1994. He continued to live at his home until this past August after a month in the hospital he realized it was time for him to move to Prairieview where he became a resident on Sept. 1, 2000. To honor Sylvester for his great community spirit, the Underwood High School Gymnasium was dedicated in his name in 1989. Shortly thereafter, he established a college fund which is awarded annually to a graduating senior who has been an outstanding athlete. Syl will be remembered as an honest and fair person in business and personal affairs, and as a man with a generous spirit and heart. He gave of himself and his means to help make things better for others and never expected anything in return. His life has been a wonderful example to his family and community. To him, it was important that he set an example in his conduct and by the words that came out of his mouth. He was a Godly man who prayed about every decision and concern that faced him. His personal relationship with Christ was most precious to him. Found in his Bible was a note that said, My best earthly reward God gave me is my wife and my family. My best heavenly reward is Jesus Our Savior. He left a great Christian heritage to his family and friends. God bless the Memory of this dear man. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jerome and Marilyn, Lookout Mountain, Ga., and Jim and Bonnie, Coal Valley, Ill.; one daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Gene Kirgiss, Hector, Minn.; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one sister, Helen Johnson, Underwood.
