Joseph Magelki
Joseph "Joe" Magelki, 85, Mandan, died Nov. 11, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mandan, with the Revs. Leonard Eckroth and Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery with military rites provided by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 707 and American Legion Post No. 40. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. Joseph John was born
on July 8, 1915 in Mandan, the son of Paul and Celestine (Paul) Magelki. Raised and educated in Mandan, he married
Elizabeth M. Froelich on Oct. 8, 1938 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mandan. He served for two years with the 242nd Rainbow Division in France, Germany and Austria during World War II. Discharged in 1947, he returned to Mandan where he was employed for nine years at Western Auto Company, the Ford Garage, in Mandan, as serviceman. After working for a year at Kinzel Tire Shop, he began his 32 years of service with the Mandan Police Department, retiring as sergeant. Many will remember Joe as he regularly walked his beat. Joe was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the North Dakota Peace Officers Association. Joe enjoyed fishing with his wife and grandchildren. He was also well known for repairing fishing rods and reels for friends. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his daughter and son-in-law, June and William Schreiner, Mandan; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Minnie Ringquist and Helen Fettig and her husband, Ray, all of Fargo; and special friends, Dennis and Bonnie Repnow, and Bob Poppe. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Shirley Kautzman; two brothers, Nick and Christ; and two sisters, Veronica and Ann Magelki. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mandan. Helen M. Siems, 80, Trent, S.D., died Nov. 12, 2000 in a Trent care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau, S.D. with burial in Trent Cemetery. Ray Hugh Brinkman
CARSON -- Ray Hugh Brinkman, 64, Carson area farmer and rancher died at home from ALS on Nov. 12, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at St. Johns Lutheran Church, Carson. No visitation will be held. Ray Brinkman was born
July 7, 1936, at Janesburg township to George Brinkman and Alice (Wessel) Brinkman. He attended Wheeler rural school, graduated from Carson High School and attended NDSU at Fargo for one year before being drafted into the United States Navy in November of 1955. He served two years in the United States Navy as an aircraft mechanic and received an honorable discharge in 1957. He was united in marriage to June Eckman at First Presbyterian Church in Carson on May 29, 1957. They owned and operated a grain, hog and cattle ranch south of Carson near the Cannonball River. Ray had a talent for farm management, planning and mechanics. He enjoyed fishing and golfing in his leisure time and also spending time at his Florida home during the winter with his wife. Ray was a man of strong character and integrity. Ray was also a loving husband, father and to his grandchildren, their "Papa." Ray had been an elder at the First Presbyterian Church, 4-H leader, and was a member of St. Johns Paradise Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife, June; two sons, Alan (Rhonda) Brinkman, Mandan, and Tim (Heather) Brinkman, Carson; two daughters, April (Dennis) Brinkman-Hoover, Worthington, Minn., and Carrollee (Shadd) Brinkman-Young, Denver, Colo.; his grandchildren, Chad and Morgan Brinkman; and his father-in-law, Gideon Eckman, Carson. Gregory J. Brorby
Gregory "Greg" J. Brorby, 48, Underwood, died Nov. 12, 2000 at his home of natural causes. Services will be held at 10 a.m. CST Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Center, with the Rev. Jon Erickson officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Center, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Thursday, also at the church. Gregory Brorby was born
Sept. 29, 1952 in Crosby. He was the son of Dale J. and Alice J. (Moss) Brorby. Gregory was raised and educated in Noonan and Center, graduating from Center High School in 1971. He continued his education at Bottineau State for one year. He served in the U.S. Army for six months at Fort Polk, La., leaving with a medical discharge. He returned to North Dakota and on June 22, 1974, he married
Kim Gullickson. Gregory worked at North American Coal for 25 years as a coal handling operator. On Jan. 5, 1987 he married
Peggy Berg. Gregory was an avid fisherman and enjoyed taking his loyal dog, Cerie with him. They hunted and enjoyed the outdoors together. His great sense of humor, practical jokes and teasing combined with his hearty laughter has captured the hearts of his loved ones. His free time was taken up with watching movies, reading novels and listening to music. Gregory is survived by two stepsons, Mike (Chris) and son, Brady Berg and David (Michelle) Berg, all of Fargo, his father, Dale Brorby, Center; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Denise, Center and Jody and Laura, Bismarck; one sister, Sheila Brorby, Bismarck; one niece and four nephews; Tanya (Mike) Sampson, Taylor, Joshua, Matthew and Jordan Brorby. Elmer D. Gums
Elmer D. Gums, 60, Bismarck, died Nov. 14, 2000 at a local hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, at Calvary United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. James Cissell officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday, and 9-11 a.m. Friday, at Boelter Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday evening. March 25, 1940 at Napoleon, the son of Edward and Emelia (Lachenmeier) Gums. He was raised on the family farm near Napoleon and graduated from Napoleon High School in 1957. Elmer attended UND before completing his degree at Mary College in 1974. Elmer married
LaVerne Pfeifer on July 12, 1964 in Goodrich. They moved to Hardin, Mont. where Elmer worked as a foreman building power line towers for Lindberg Construction. In 1965, Elmer and LaVerne moved to Bismarck. He worked at Sears before beginning his employment at Job Service of North Dakota in 1968. During the 1970's, Elmer and his good friend, James Sauer, owned and operated A&L Attic Insulation. Elmer's career at Job Service of North Dakota took him from a beginning position of interviewer to his final position as a regional manager from which he retired in December of 1997. He enjoyed sports, especially the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins, as well as surfing the internet, bicycle riding, and watching and feeding the birds and squirrels. He was a member of the Elks, Kiwanis, Toastmasters and was actively involved in his church. Elmer was a compassionate, kind, caring, generous man, who was known for his quick wit and sense of humor. He especially cherished the last four and one half months that he spent with his only grandchild. He is survived by his wife, LaVerne; one son, Todd, Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Jodi and Tom Vadnais, Bismarck; one granddaughter, Sarah; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Bernice and Art Carlson, Minneapolis, and Erma and Don Roesler, Williston; one brother and sister-in-law, Hilbert and LaVonna Gums, Bismarck; and a special aunt, Lillie Wanner, Bismarck. to Peter and Margaret (Kary) Kolberg. Raised and educated in the area, she graduated from Bismarck High School and was employed by the Ellis Agency in Mandan. She married
Erwin Haseltine on Sept. 2, 1940, in Wibaux, Mont. She worked in the Morton County Clerk of Court's office and retired as Clerk of Court in 1983. Helen was very fond of crafts and particularly enjoyed crocheting. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed crossword puzzles and cooking her specialties for friends and family. There was a special place in her heart for her only grandchild, Bailey. She is survived by her husband, Erwin; two sons, Stacy, Bismarck, and Robert and his wife, Beth, Fargo; one granddaughter, Bailey Haseltine; three sisters, Sally O'Neill and her husband, Owen, Mandan, Evelyn Schrum and Margaret Kolberg, both of California; one brother, Bill and his wife, Martha, Maryland. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Haseltine; her brothers, Robert, Bernie, John and Frederick; and her sisters, Ann Fox, Kathryn George and Elizabeth and Mary Kolberg. Ora Henderson
Ora Henderson, 92, Mandan, died Nov. 13, 2000 in the Mandan care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at Mandan Union Cemetery, with the Rev. Charles Axness officiating. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. May Ora Burdick was born
on Oct. 12, 1908 in Mandan, the daughter of Frank and Eleanor (Zeamer) Burdick. After graduating from Mandan High School, Ora went to business college and shortly thereafter met her husband to be, Vernon Henderson. They were married
on Aug. 14, 1929 and later formed the "Vern and his Five Acres" band, playing for dances in small towns around North Dakota during the W.P.A. days. When they returned to Mandan, Ora made use of her secretarial skills and was employed by a CPA firm in Bismarck, the Morton County Attorney and later the Morton County Auditor. In March of 1953, she became the county auditor and remained in office until her retirement in April of 1975. Ora and Vernon loved to fish and hunt together and were also very involved with the Mandan Archery Club. Ora won the North Dakota State Womens Championship and received many medals and trophies during her membership. She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, LaVerne and Bob Thompson, Bismarck, Joyce and John Neibauer, Billings, Mont., Dolores Sullivan, Port Lions, Alaska, and Ora Jean and Ed Gunderson, Billings; 21 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon, who died on Feb. 4, 1985; two brothers, Carl and Eugene; three sisters, Harriet Kuether, Fern Person and Enid Reynolds; one son-in-law, Pat Sullivan; one grandson; one great-grandson; one great-granddaughter and one great-great-grandson.
