Eloy Schlecht
WIMBLEDON -- Eloy D. Schlecht, 76, of Wimbledon, died March 1, 2001, in Jamestown. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Wimbledon, with burial in Prairie View Cemetery, Wimbledon. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Brinson, Florissant, Colo., and Kimi Lawrence, Jamestown; one son, Michael, Wimbledon; seven grandchildren; one sister, Lucille Scott, Olympia, Wash.; three brothers, Donald, Wimbledon, James, Spring, Texas, and David, Glendale, Ariz. Arlene Schmidt
Arlene J. Schmidt, 72, Mandan, died March 1, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Charles Axness officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Sunday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday. There will be no visitation at the church. Arlene was born June 2, 1928, in Mandan, the daughter of Paul E. and Katherine (Keller) Graner. She graduated from Mandan High School in 1945. After graduation she worked as a cashier for J.C. Penny's for two years before she moved to Phoenix to work. Her husband-to-be, Vincent H. Schmidt, went to Phoenix and they were married on Jan. 22, 1948. They lived in Long Beach, Calif. for two years before returning to Mandan. Arlene worked for Allied Van Lines for 15 years and was later employed as a cook at various places before retiring. After retiring she volunteered at Medcenter One Care Center.
She loved to cook, bake and work in her flower gardens. She looked forward to cooking Thanksgiving dinner when her family gathered from all around North Dakota.
She is survived by her husband, Vincent; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry and Barbara, Janesville, Wis., Dean and Suzanne, Spokane, Wash., and Randy, Mandan; three grandsons, Matthew, Randy Jr. and Ryan; four step-grandsons; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Laverne and Lawrence Weinhandl, Fergus Falls, Minn., and Adeline and William Miller, Huff; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Clarence Solheim
TUTTLE -- Clarence Solheim, 88, a life-long Tuttle area farmer, died of cancer, March 1, 2001. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at English Lutheran Church, Tuttle, with the Rev. Allen Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Tuttle Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue one hour before services at the church.
Clarence Alfred Solheim was born Feb. 14, 1913, to Mattias and Marie (Hegdahl) Solheim on their farm in Clear Lake Township near Tuttle. He grew up on the farm and was educated in rural schools, graduating from Tuttle High School in 1932. After graduation he worked with his father on the farm for a few years, and for other farmers as a laborer. From 1934 to 1942 he worked for the Figenskau Coal Company in Underwood. He operated a machine that dug coal in the underground mine.
On July 18, 1937, he married Mabel Berg at Bethany Lutheran Church in Robinson.
In 1942 they bought a farm near Tuttle. Clarence's uncle, Lars Hegdahl, had homesteaded this farm around 1908. Clarence and Mabel lived on the farm until 1995. Since then they have lived in Steele.
Clarence was active in church and other community affairs. A lifelong member of the English Lutheran Church in Tutte, he served many years on the church council. He served on the Tuttle Grain Board, as a director of BEK telephone cooperative, and as a director of the Kidder County Social Service Board. When the Tuttle High School was built in 1959, Clarence served as vice president of the school board. He was the Jubilee Treasurer for both the 1960 Jubilee and the 1986 Jubilee in Tuttle.
He is survived by his wife, Mabel; one son, Leslie, Lisle, Ill.; one daughter, Myrna Wetzel and her husband, Darrell, Bismarck; one granddaughter, Lynette Simonson and her husband, Jeffery, Lake Elmo, Minn.; two grandsons, Bryan Wetzel, Bismarck, and Darren Wetzel and his wife, Cheri, and their children, great-granddaughters, Samantha and Jessica , Argusville.
His parents; an infant son; and his brothers, Alvin, Manley, Victor and Manfred, preceded him in death.
Lester Lund
ALAMO --ŻLester Lund,81, Williston, died March 2, 2001, in the Williston hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Williston, with burial in Alamo Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Marie; two stepsons, Gary Lund, Sunnyside, Wash., and Ronald Lund, Williston; one stepdaughter, Marilyn Ewan, Princeton, N.J.; one brother, Merle, Williston; three sisters, Sybil Esterby, Appam, Gene Wiles, Woodenville, Wash., and Arlene Anderson, Bend, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Harley McDowell
Harley F. McDowell, 82, Bismarck, died March 4, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.
Evangeline Smeland
Evangeline Smeland, 80, formerly of Mandan, died March 4, 2001, in Eugene, Ore. The former Evangeline Cody was born June 23, 1920 in Mandan.
Her parents, Charles and Eva Cody, and her sister, Patricia Zeller, preceded her in death. Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, James and Geraldine Cody of Mandan; her two daughters and one son-in-law, Kathleen and Conrad Mann, Poulsbo, Wash., and Christine Cody, Eugene; three grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
Evangeline lived in Mandan until 1999 when she moved to the Pacific Northwest to be near her daughters.
Leslie Biesterfeld
WILTON -- Leslie Biesterfeld, 74, Cozad, Neb., died Nov. 9, 2000, in Cozad. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Berryman Funeral Home Chapel, Cozad, with burial in Riverview Cemetery, Wilton, at a later date. He is survived by his wife, Delores; five daughters, Nancy Bassett, Cheyenne, Wyo., Carol Kriks, Pickrell, Neb., Diann Supanchick, Axtell, Neb., Mavis Newton, Callaway, Neb., and Cindy Watkins, Carbondale, Colo.; one brother, Leo, Cozad; two sisters, Edith Palmer, Ceylon, Minn., and Doris Binsfeld, Wilton; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Frank Edward Brockey
RUSO -- Frank Edward Brockey Jr., 62, Ruso and Velva, died Nov. 6, 2000, in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva. Visitation will be from noon-5 p.m. today and Sunday at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot. Frank was born Jan. 31, 1938, in Minot, the son of Frank Brockey Sr. and Irene Brockey. He was raised and educated in Minot, graduating from Minot High School in 1957. He served with the Army National Guard for six years. He worked for Arrowhead Pest Control for a number of years before opening his own business, Frank's Elevator Cleaning Service. He retired in 1980 to open an antique shop in Minot with his wife, LaVonda. After 10 years they relocated to Velva where he owned and operated Antiques R Us until his death. Frank served as advisor and restoration specialist for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. for 17 years. He also did contract restoration for museums in several states, including the Pillsbury, Newbury and Kodak museums, and several state university museums. He donated items for permanent display. He held lifetime memberships on several museum boards throughout the United States and Canada. He married LaVonda Stadler Bussiere on Dec. 19, 1981, in Minot. He is survived by his wife, LaVonda; his mother, Irene Brockey, Minot; one sister, Irene Mary Rassier, Grand Forks; four sons, Grant, Sioux Falls, S.D., Brian, Black Diamond, Wash., Lance, Clifford, Colo., and Jeremy, Grand Forks; three daughters, Kristine Smith, Sioux Falls, S.D., Deborah Mehrer, Minot, and Shelly Weekly, Sullivan, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Brockey Sr.; and his brother, John Brockey.

NEW SALEM -- Catherine Porsborg Daniels, 75, Great Falls, Mont., died Nov. 8, 2000, in a Great Falls hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Heritage Baptist Church, Great Falls, with burial in Highland Cemetery, Great Falls. She is survived by two daughters, Paulette Rynearson, Orofino, Idaho, and Linda Winburn, Boise, Idaho; two sons, Dale, Las Vegas, and David, Hayden Lake, Idaho; one sister, Isabel Unser, Mandan; and two brothers, George Brilz, Glendive, Mont., and Leonard Brilz, Bismarck. He is survived by his wife, Luella; one daughter, Dianne VanBerkom, Minot; two sons, Darryl, Minot, and Daniel, Idaho Falls, Idaho; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
