CHASELEY -- Esther Emerson, 82, Chaseley, died June 9, 2000, in the Carrington nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church, Chaseley. Further arrangements are pending at Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden.

Edna M. French
Edna M. French, 91, Bismarck, died June 8, 2000, in a Bismarck nursing home. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck, with the Rev. Dale Nabben officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Edna Jensen was born Dec. 26, 1908, in Bismarck, to Mary and William Jensen. She grew up and attended school in Bismarck. Edna married Leslie A. French, Sept. 9, 1929. She was active in numerous community and civic organizations, such as the Cancer Society and Community Chest, and was a charter member of the Apple Creek Country Club. Edna was an avid bridge player for over 50 years and enjoyed reading, golf and was an expert at crossword puzzles. When Leslie retired, they moved to Sun City, Ariz., where they lived for 28 years. Edna returned to Bismarck in 1995. Edna is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Donald Schatz, Bismarck; and nine nieces ane nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and three sisters. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center or St. Alexius Foundation. DICKINSON -- Anton Jassek, 73, Dickinson, died June 9, 2000, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.

Ruth Johnson
Ruth Johnson, 83, Bismarck, died June 10, 2000, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Evangel Temple, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

George W. Kowis
KILLDEER -- George W. Kowis, 87, Killdeer, died June 8, 2000 in the Killdeer nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Monday, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Killdeer, with burial in Killdeer Cemetery. He is survived by one sister, Opal Jefferies, Cottonwood, Calif. Etta Ann Mautz
GARRISON -- Etta Ann Mautz, 73, Garrison, died June 9, 2000, in her home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison. Further arrangements are pending at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison.

Carolyn Nelson
Carolyn Nelson, 69, Bismarck, died June 10, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.

Bernice Orne
Bernice Orne, 94, Bismarck, died June 9, 2000, in a Bismarck nursing home. Private services will be held at a later date. She was born Sept. 12, 1905, in Clear Lake Township, rural Driscoll, the daughter of Franklin and Sarah (Pasley) Townsend. She was raised and educated in Clear Lake Township. She married Ben Orne on Dec. 14, 1927, in Bismarck. They farmed near Driscoll until retiring in 1970. Ben died Aug. 2, 1981. Bernice continued living on the farm until November 1990, when she moved to Bismarck. She entered Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in February 1991. She is survived by one daughter, Ruby Wilson, Tacoma, Wash.; two sons and three daughters-in-law, Richard and Yvonne, Bismarck, Loyd and Connie, Yelm, Wash., and Leona Orne, Minot; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben; two sons, Dale and Jimmy; and one daughter, Nancy. (Boelter Funeral Home)

Hilda Rahn
HAZEN -- Hilda Rahn, 82, Hazen, died June 9, 2000, in the Hazen hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at Peace Lutheran Church, Hazen, with burial in the church cemetery. She is survived by one son, Wayne, Hazen; three granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Hertha Maas, Hazen; and two stepbrothers, The Rev. Carl Schulz, Spokane, Wash., and Herbert Schulz, Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada. (Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen)

Neil and Fran Thom
BALDWIN -- Neil Thom, 57, and Fran Thom, 52, Baldwin, died June 8, 2000, in Bismarck. Memorial services will be held at noon Monday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Revs. Charlie Heidt and Paul Schauer officiating. Visitation will be from 6-7 tonight at Bismarck Funeral Home, where a prayer service will begin at 7 tonight. Fran was born April 14, 1948, the daughter of Joseph and Caroline (Roberson) Ibach, in Bismarck. She graduated from Baker High School in Columbus, Ga. She worked in Columbus for many years until moving to Bismarck in 1980 with her two boys. She loved horses, gardening and animals in general, but the most important things in her life were her family and friends, especially her new granddaughter, Kaylee. Neil was born in Grafton on Dec. 18, 1942, the son of Edward and Dona Thom. He attended Neche High School and Aakers Business College. He entered the National Guard and lived in Washington and Idaho, before moving to Bismarck. Neil loved horses and outdoors, and he competed in cow-penning competitions. Neil and Fran are survived by their parents, Joe and Caroline Ibach, Bismarck, and Edward Thom, Neche; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robby Joe and Sue King, Everett, Wash., and Jay and Jennet King, Spokane, Wash.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Renae and Brian Wetsig, Edmonds, Wash., and Jennifer and Dan Werner, Gilbert, Ariz.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Gerry Ann and Gary Small, Baldwin, Kathy and Thomas Parsons, Columbus, and Carry and Mike Johns, Couer d' Alene, Idaho; Neil's sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Dave Coats, Missouri; three brothers and sisters-in-law, J.J. and Shelly Ibach, Dickinson, Fred and Cindy Ibach, Mandan, and Dan and Shirley Ibach, Lincoln; Neil's three brothers and sisters-in-law, Randy and Shirley Thom, Neche, Bruce and Donna Thom, Neche, and Wayne and Garlenda Thom, Perry, Ga.; two granddaughters and one grandson; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Fran was preceded in death by her grandparents, Jake and Kattie Ibach, and Fred and Irene Roberson. Neil was preceded in death by his grandparents; his mother, Dona; and his brother, Marty.

DEVILS LAKE -- Betty Grafsgaard, 70, Devils Lake, died June 9, 2000, in the Lakota nursing home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake, with burial in Bethlehem Cemetery, McHenry. She is survived by three daughters, Charlotte Rardon and Carol Reese, both of Devils Lake, and JoAnne Close, Starkweather; five sons, Mike, Mandan, Gary, McLaughlin, S.D., Duane, John, Devils Lake, and Gerald, Dickinson; 20 grandchildren; one brother, James Torkildson, Indian Lake Estates, Fla.; and two sisters, Joyce Barclay, Binford, and Grace Grafsgaard, Cooperstown. He is survived by his wife, Irma; three sons, Steven, Vancouver, Wash., Duane, Cheyenne, Wyo., and Mike, Thatcher, Utah; four daughters, Karen Rea, Idaho City, Idaho, Kelen Barth, Clearlake, Calif., Lynette Siroky, Billings, Mont., and DeVon Camacho, Clearlake; four sisters, Olga Elmer and Lillie Sorenson, both of Watford City, Myrtle Gross, Colfax, Ill., and Betty Larson, Belvedere, Ill.; 24 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Mattie Hamery
Mattie Hamery, Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, died June 10, 2000. A memorial graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery, with the Rev. Dale Nabben officiating. Mattie was born at Carson, the daughter of Ludwig and Martha (Emerson) Hamery. She was a resident of Bismarck where she worked as a librarian for the City of Bismarck. Mattie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She is survived by four sisters and one brother-in-law, LaRue DeLaBarre, Bismarck, Lillian Flaig and Alice Carlisle, both of Ames, Iowa, and Pearl and Huber Jordan, Green Bay, Wis.; and many nephews and nieces; their children and grandchildren. Mattie was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Llewellyn; one sister, Marie Davison; one niece and two nephews. (Eastgate Funeral Service)

Cathy Hulm
HAGUE -- Cathy Hulm, 42, Hague, died June 10, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital as a result of injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on June 4. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hague. Further arrangements are pending at Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

Pius Johner
Pius Johner, 75, 1019 Porter Ave., died June 10, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Boelter Funeral Home, with burial in Selfridge Cemetery. He was born May 13, 1925, in Strasburg, the son of Mike and Eva (Kraft) Johner. He was raised and educated in the Selfridge area. In August 1944, he married Ardice R. Krosch. To this marriage five children were born. He worked for area farmers until the construction of Froelich Dam. In 1961 they moved to Bismarck, where Pius worked for B&B Service in Mandan and Wachter Ranch of Bismarck until his retirement in 1986. Ardice passed away May 17, 1999. Pius enjoyed farming and his grandchildren. His heart was filled with joy and laughter. He loved to play pinochle. He is survived by his daughter, Rose M. Powell, Selfridge; his son, Pius J. and his wife, Anita, Mandan; six sisters, Rose, Christine, Katie and Anne, all of Montana, Pauline, California, and Wilma, Idaho; one brother, Frank, Washington; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ardice; one daughter, Shirley; two sons, Richard and William; and his parents, Mike and Eva.

Hattie Kruckenberg
NEW SALEM -- Hattie Kruckenberg, 98, formerly of Hazen, died June 10, 2000, in the New Salem nursing home. Arrangements are pending at Seibel Funeral Home, Hazen.

Etta Ann Mautz
GARRISON -- Etta Ann "Babe" Mautz, 73, Garrison, died June 9, 2000, in her home of cancer. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison, with the Rev. Dick Hendrickson officiating. Burial will be in Garrison Cemetery. Etta Ann Shirley Olson was born to Elsie Olson, May 6, 1927, in Bismarck. She attended rural school in Baldwin and Bismarck High School. While living in Bismarck she had been employed at Sweetheart Bakery, Armour's Creamery and Jack and Jill Grocery. She married Eugen Struwing on July 11, 1947, in Bismarck. He died of cancer, Nov. 19, 1957. On March 2, 1963, she married Albert Mautz in Bismarck and have lived at rural Coleharbor since that time. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends who will greatly miss her wonderful smile and sense of humor. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Garrison. Etta is survived by her husband; three sons, James Struwing, Salt Lake City, Utah, Mark Struwing, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Dennis Mautz, Garrison; one daughter, Denise Mautz, Garrison; three brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Gladys Cederstrom, Roger and LaVerne Cederstrom, all of Minot, and Bruce and Jean Cederstrom, Bismarck; and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Arlene and Dale Morrow, Park Rapids, Minn., and Adell Garman, Seattle. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Russell Cederstrom; and two infant brothers.
