Carol Woida
Sister Carol Woida, 93, a member of the Benedictine Sisters of Anunciation Monastery, Bismarck, died July 8, 2000 at St. Vincent's Care Center. Services are set for 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Annunciation Monastery. The rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Monday, followed by a wake service at 7:30 p.m. at the monastery where visitation begins today at 4:15 p.m. An educator for 54 years, Sister Carol taught second and third grades for 18 years and then moved into the upper grades, becoming a noted junior high and high school math teacher. A graduate of Dickinson State University, she taught in schools in Bismarck, Mandan, Dickinson, Mott and Flasher. Born Jan. 28, 1907, in Urbank, Minn., Eleanor was the ninth of 12 children of Pauline (Kurkowski) and John Woida. She entered St. Benedict's Convent, St. Joseph, Minn., in 1925 and made her monastic vows on July 11, 1927. She came to North Dakota in 1927 to teach and was a founder of Annunciation Monastery in 1947. After retiring from teaching in 1981, Sister Carol took up a second career as a shoe cobbler and for the next decade took delight, as she said, in proving her devotion to the sisters' soles. Sister Carol could not do things tepidly. As an elementary teacher, she and her classes put on the best plays in the school. She loved a party and enjoyed a good laugh. She is remembered for her creative Thanksgiving skits and props at the monastery. When the care center needed someone to deliver the Bismarck Tribune to residents, she was ready to don a carrier's cap and make her appointed rounds. All of this zeal for service to people was secondary to her profound love for Christ and Mary, His mother. Highlights for her were not the recognition won as a teacher, but such opportunities as participation in the Diocese of Bismarck's two-week Marian Pilgrimage to Rome, Fatima, Lourdes and Assisi in 1979. She is survived by nieces and nephews and the Sisters of Annunciation Monastery. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)
