Edward Helgi Goodman
Edward Helgi Goodman was born on May 6th, 1923, on a farm near Upham. His parents were Margaret (Benson) and Walter Goodman, both of Icelandic descent. He graduated from Bantry High School and attended college at Bottineau. After a brief time in the Army specialist training program in Denver, he finished college and went on to attend the UND School of Medicine. He finished his medical degree at the University of Illinois in 1949. He did a one year internship at St. Luke's Hospital in Fargo then moved to Rolla, ND to begin work as a family physician. He practiced medicine in Rolla for 6 years, and in Los Angeles for two years before moving to Napoleon. He served Napoleon, the surrounding communities, and the Wishek Community Hospital from 1958 through 1980. Later he lived in Fort Morgan, Colo., and practiced in nearby Brush, Colo., until he retired in 1990. In 1946 he married June Landowski of Grand Forks. They had three sons, Ronald, Michael, and Gary, and two daughters Susan and Carrie. He was remarried in 1962 to Sharon Meier of Napoleon and had a son, Patrick, and a daughter, Shari. Since 1980 he has been married to Joann (Bartz), with two sons, Brent and Bruce, and a daughter, Sherry. He has 24 grandchildren and three great grand children. His older brother, Alex lives in Livermore, Calif. He also has a twin sister, Ann Stephan, in Bismarck. His brother, George, died in 1971, and his younger brother is John Paul of Harvey. He was involved with the Lion's Club and the Elks. He served as the Regional Chairman for the Alzheimer's Association in Colorado and was a member of the American Medical Association Academy of Family Physicians. He was always an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards, but most of all his real love was caring for patients. He struggled with heart disease over the past 10 years and died July 15th, 2000.

CATHAY -- Ross Kost, 45, Cathay, died July 17, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Fessenden, with burial in Hillside Cemetery, Fessenden. He is survived by his wife, Tami; his son, Dusty; his mother, Delores Kost, Fessenden; and two sisters, Karen Miller, Battle Lake, Minn., and Gwen Mehrer, Kansas City, Mo. Dessie E. Malone
STRASBURG -- Dessie E. Malone, 90, Strasburg, died July 17, 2000, in the Strasburg care cener. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton, with burial in the church cemetery. She is survived by three daughters, Lorrene Baumgartner, Linton, Marie Fischer, South St. Paul, Minn., and Bev Goldade, Strasburg. (Myers Funeral Home, Linton)
Hildegarde Miller
Hildegarde Miller, 86, Knoxville, Tenn., formerly of Pleasant Hill, Calif., died July 18, 2000, in her home. Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Park, Sacramento, Calif. Hildegarde was born in Tuttle to Martin J. and Magdalena (Wagner) Miller. After school, she worked in Bismarck and was the first lady to pilot an airplane in North Dakota. She moved to California in 1944, where she lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay area until her move to Knoxville in 1998. She was involved in community affairs, and enjoyed crocheting, gardening and traveling throughout the Unites States and Europe. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sheree McGrath. She is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Adam and Rosey Miller, Knoxville; one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Ed Kahler, Missoula, Mont.; one sister-in-law, Alvina Miller, Tuttle; and numerous nieces and nephews. Emma Rogness
FESSENDEN -- Emma Rogness, 85, Fessenden, died July 17, 2000, in the Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, Fessenden, with burial in Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Manfred. She is survived by three daughters, Sharon Lloyd, Fessenden, Myrna Gilbert, Schertz, Texas, and Eileen Enger, Plymouth, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Leonard Grauman, Fessenden. Aloysius Benedict Schneider
Aloysius Benedict Schneider, 73, died July 17, 2000, after a long illness. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, rural Mandan. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a vigil and rosary will be held at 7 tonight. Aloysius, the son of Jacob and Eva (Dosch) Schneider, was born March 9, 1927, in Strasburg. He was raised and educated in Strasburg where he farmed for many years. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Nov. 29, 1945, and achieved the rank of sergeant. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 2, 1947. On Nov. 22, 1961, Aloysius married Shirley Werner. He was employed with the Bismarck Postal Service from 1965 until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and St. Anne's Church. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; two sons, Wally and Steve; and three daughters, Mary, Bonnie and Ann, all of Bismarck. He was preceded in death by one sister, Johanna; and his parents, Jacob and Eva.
Chad W. Schwind
DEVILS LAKE -- Chad W. Schwind, 28, Devils Lake, died July 17, 2000, as the result of an automobile accident in Jamestown. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Tracy Chapel, Camp Grafton, Devils Lake, with the Rev. David Johnson officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Tracy Chapel, Camp Grafton, Devils Lake, where a prayer service will begin at 7 tonight. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. Chad William Schwind was born Sept. 4, 1971, at Golden Valley, Minn., the son of Harley and Lola Cox Schwind Sr. He was baptized in Brooklyn Park, Minn. Chad moved with his family to LaMoure, where he graduated in 1990. On Dec. 23, 1988, he joined the North Dakota National Guard, Company D, 141st, Engr. Cbt. BN in Edgeley. He attended Northwest Technical College in 1993 for electronics. He then transferred to the Det 2 132 QM Company in Rugby. In 1994 he attended the North Dakota State School of Science for computer programming. He started working as a range technician for the North Dakota National Guard at Camp Grafton, Devils Lake. He became a member of the Devils Lake Rural Fire Department in 1997. In 1998, he transfered to the HHD in Bismarck. Chad became a full time state employee as a range tech in 1999. This year he was employed as a weapons range technician. He received several service awards including the Army Service Ribbon, NCO Developmental Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserves Component Metal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and three Army Component Achievement Medals. He also received several state military awards including the North Dakota Army National Guard Basic Training Ribbon, Mine Badge, 5-year Service Ribbon, State Achievement Ribbon, and Emergency Service Ribbon. He is survived by his parents, Harley and Lola Schwind Sr., LaMoure; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Harley and Darcy Schwind Jr., and Kurt and Alison Schwind, both of Devils Lake, and Darrin Schwind, Mandan; one nephew, Devin Stugelmeyer; four nieces, Carrina Stugelmeyer, Paige Yri, Kaycee Schwind and Tristin Schwind; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Henry and Magdalena Schwind, and Albert and Theresa Cox; and one nephew, Harley Schwind III. (Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake)

He is survived by his wife, Rosalie; one son, Stephen Carnal; four daughters, Bonnie Joing, Kathy Bohnsack, Barbara Hultin and Nancy Burek; one brother, The Rev. Elmo Anderson; and 10 grandchildren. Mahlon Blandin
Mahlon "Slug" Blandin, 77, Mandan, died July 15, 2000, in the Mandan hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish rosary will be said at 7 tonight. Mahlon "Slub" was born March 9, 1923, in Mandan, the son of Harold and Elizabeth (Froelich) Blandin. He was raised and educated in Mandan, graduating from Mandan High School in 1939. Slug married Pauline Zwarych on June 16, 1945, in Mandan. He managed the Mandan Theater for several years and worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad for 29 years, retiring in 1965. Pauline died on Oct. 14, 1989. His life was his family, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, collecting electric trains and railroad videos from all over the world. He was a member of the Mandan Elks Lodge and St. Joseph Catholic Church. Slug is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Kay and Gary Becker, Mandan; his grandchildren, Scott and his wife, Leyla, and Kelly Becker, all of Mandan, Carrie and her husband, Clint Stone, Berrien Springs, Mich., Kristi Kay and her husband, David Oliver, Minneapolis; four great-grandchildren, Ethan Horning, Mandan, Kevin Oliver, Minneapolis, Xavier Preabt, Mandan, and Madison Brown, Bismarck; and one sister and brother-in-law, Bette and Warren Buehler, Mandan. His sister, Dorothy Bonham of Jackson, Minn., died July 16, 2000. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Pauline.
Lee Ellis
Lee Ellis, 59, Aberdeen, S.D., died July 14, 2000, in Aberdeen. Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Spitzer-Osthus Funeral Home, Aberdeen, with burial in Oakesview Cemetery, Oakes. He is survived by his wife, Carlene; one son, Kelly, Bismarck; two daughters, Karla Docktor, Minneapolis, and Sherry Cahoon, Center; seven stepchildren; three brothers, Robert, Rapid City, S.D., Duane, Missoula, Mont., and Gene, Eugene, Ore.; two sisters, Ann Lukens, Beaverton, Ore., and Laura Berry, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three grandchildren; and 15 step-grandchildren.
Leona Fischer
LINTON -- Leona Fischer, 53, Linton, died of cancer, July 15, 2000, in her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton, with the Revs. Bruce Krebs, Frank Schuster and Al Ebach officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Leona Fischer was born May 20, 1947, in Napoleon, the daughter of Baltzer M. and Ida (Bosch) Weigel. She was raised on a farm in the Kintyre area and attended a rural school near Kintyre. On July 6, 1967, she married Kenneth Fischer and they made their home in Milwaukee, Wis., where they owned and operated a tavern named "Fischer's Tab." Leona worked for Briggs-Stratton for 10 years. In 1977, they moved to Linton, where they owned and operated the Starlite Bar and Grill. Leona loved spending time with her four grandchildren, they were her pride and joy. Family was very important to her. She also enjoyed playing cards, dancing, music, shopping, collecting porcelain dolls and knick-knacks, canning and cooking. Grateful to have shared her life are her husband, Kenneth; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Thomas, John, and Paul and Suzie, all of Bismarck; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Mike Schumacher, Linton; four grandchildren, Shane and Jesse Fischer, and Jade and Anthony Schumacher; one sister, Ann Nieman, Bismarck; seven brothers, Victor Weigel, Fargo, Iggy Weigel, Dickinson, Wendy Weigel, Kintyre, Ken Weigel, Roger Weigel, Alvin Weigel and Edward Weigel, all of Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Margaret.

FORT MORGAN, Colo. -- Dr. Edward H. Goodman, 77, Fort Morgan, died July 15, 2000, during surgery on his hip. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Presbyterian Church, Fort Morgan, with inurnment in Memorial Gardens Columbarium, Fort Morgan. Nicholas John Gustin
Nicholas John Gustin, 91, died July 9, 2000. Services were held July 13 at Visitation Catholic Church, Tacoma, Wash. Nick was born June 21, 1909, on a farm near St. Anthony, to John and Gertrude (Schmidt) Gustin. He married Emelia Renner in 1932 and moved to Flasher where he managed the Farmer's Union Oil Co. IN April of 1945, the family moved to Tacoma where he was employed by Mueller Harkins Buick, and later Gilchrist Buick as parts manager until his retirement in 1971. Nick is survived by three sons, Duaine, Gig Harbor, Wash., Arnie, LaCrescenta, Calif., and Norman, Fircrest, Wash.; three daughters, Donna Bader, Edmonds, Wash., Dorothy Harris, Tacoma, and JoAnne Stoltz, Lakewood, Wash.; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Joe, Eau Claire, Wis.; and one sister, Ida Zander, Mandan. He was preceded in death by Emelia, his wife of 58 years; one son, Billy; three grandchildren, Mark, Richard and Elizabeth Gustin; his parents; and seven brothers, Ralph, Tom, The Rev. Arno; Laurence, Mike, Johnny and Frank.
Marion Hanson
NEW ROCKFORD -- Marion Hanson, 92, New Rockford, died July 15, 2000, in the New Rockford nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Church, New Rockford, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Sheyenne. She is survived by two sons, Don, Sheyenne, and Bruce, Jamestown; five grandsons; and one great-grandson. (Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford)
Dora Mae Jennings
Funeral services were held July 12 for Mrs. Dora Mae Jennings of Lakewood, Colo. She died July 8, 2000, in a Denver hospital. Dora was the daughter of Robert and Stella Huston Maxwell. She was born May 31, 1932, near Turtle Lake, where she was raised and educated. She graduated from Turtle Lake High School in 1950. Dora and Arnold "Bud" Jennings were married June 11, 1956, at the First Presbyterian Church in Bismarck. They lived in North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana before settling in Lakewood where they had lived for the past 32 years. She was employed by Montana-Dakota Utilities as a secretary, and California Co., as a secretary/receptionist in Bismarck and Billings, Mont. She also worked 12 years as an executive secretary for Mesa Petroleum Co. in Denver. She is survived by her husband, Bud; two sons, Jeffrey, Williston, and Michael, Casper, Wyo.; and one daughter, Michelle, Lakewood. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Charlotte, Natalie, Michelle and Collette. She also leaves one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Carolyn Maxwell; and four sisters and three brothers-in-law, her triplet, Doris Anderson, Rueby and Richard McCabe, Robert and Al Hampstead, and Patricia and Les Mai. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Maxwell, and her triplet, Dean. Also, two nephews, Robert McCabe and Arthur Maxwell Jr.; and one brother-in-law, Billy Anderson.
Marion Francis Kulas
BOWMAN -- Marion Francis Kulas, 90, Bowman, died July 15, 2000, in the Bowman hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday at Bowman Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Becca Krogstad officiating. Burial will be in Bowman Cemetery. Syneva Arithson will serve as organist, with special music by Jackie Freitag. Pallbearers will be Martin Septon, Bill Mason Sr., Anders Knospe, Reuben Pladsen, Donald DeBode, Dale Pickard, Kenny Bates and Terry Gwinn. Honorary pallbearers will be all friends and neighbors. Marion F. Kulas was born July 22, 1909, at Dodge, Wis., the son of Frank and Mary Kukowski Kulas. He moved with his family to a homestead14 miles south of Marmarth, where he lived with his siblings and parents until adulthood. He worked on the family farm/ranch and for neighboring famers and ranchers. On June 24, 1933, Marion married Signe Greni at Buffalo, S.D. They lived on the family farm for two years at which time they moved to Merrian, Neb., where he worked for the Standard Oil Co. In 1943 Marion entered the U.S. Navy where he served in the South Pacific during World War II. Signe and her children moved back to Bowman during his service duty. At the end of the war, Marion joined his family in Bowman. He began working for Carl Halm Electric and later went to work for the Bowman Post Office as a clerk, and later as a rural letter carrier until his retirement in 1972. After retirement he worked at the Bowman Golf Course as a maintenance manager, and for the Civil Defense Emergency Management Agency. Marion was a member of Bowman Lutheran Church and the Frank Gordhammer American Legion Post 48 of Bowman. He was an avid fisherman and vegetable gardener, enjoyed feeding and watching birds and keeping track of his favorite baseball team, the Yankees. He enjoyed bowling, craft work and his travels took him to all corners of the United States and Hawaii. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, and will be missed by all of them. He is survived by his wife, Signe; one son, Alan, San Jose, Calif.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Donald DeBode, Oak Harbor, Wash., and Linda and Terry Gwinn, LaCenter, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter, Kimberly Braun; three sisters, Rose, Gertrude and Isabelle; and two brothers, Joe and Zigmund. (Kresbach Funeral Service, Bowman)
