LISBON -- Owen J. "Swede" Thompson, 87, Lisbon and formerly of Napoleon, died July 8, 2000 in Palo Alto, Calif. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at North Dakota Veterans Home, Lisbon, with burial in St. Philips Neri Cemetery, Napoleon. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. H. Rex Olson
H. Rex Olson, 91, Tempe, Ariz., and formerly of Barton and Fargo, died July 10, 2000 in Tempe. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Barton Lutheran Church, Barton. He is survived by his wife, Selma; one son, Richard, Bismarck; one daughter, Rita Sanders, Tempe; a brother, Vern McFair, Phoenix, Ariz.; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

WILLISTON -- Ted Schmitz, 82, Williston, died July 9, 2000. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Williston, with burial in Riverview Cemetery. He is survived by his children, Orell, Bismarck and John, Williston; three sisters, Alice Evans, Williston, Minnie Winkels, Alexandria, Minn., and Marcy Richards, Roy, Wash.; three brothers, Andrew, Louisville, Ky., Ambrose "Paul," Torrence, Calif., and Raymond, Fort Collins, Colo. HARVEY -- Anton "Tony" Schneider, 77, rural Harvey, died July 11, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Selz. Further arrangements are pending with Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey.

Frank Vojta, 69, Glenham, S.D., died July 10, 2000 in the Mobridge, S.D. hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mobridge, S.D., with burial in Glenham Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Millie; one son, Leo, Mobridge; two daughters, Theresa Essler, Bismarck, and Cathy Carlson, Ogden, Utah; two grandchildren; one brother, Ralph, Mobridge, and one sister, Beverly Smith, Gregory, S.D. Samantha White Bull
Samantha John White Bull, four months, died July 11, 2000 at her home in Mandan. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Fort Yates with The Reverend Virginia Luger officiating. Burial will be in Selfridge Community Cemetery. There will be a wake service starting at 7 p.m. tonight at the church. Samantha was born on March 8, 2000 in Bismarck, the daughter of Kirby and Melissa (Volk) White Bull. She is survived by her parents, Melissa and Kirby; her four sisters, Lacey, Oklahoma, Alexandra, South Dakota, Shantel and McKenzie, at home; five brothers, Calvin, South Dakota, Daniel, California, Matthew, Missouri, Jerried and Kasey, at home; her grandparents, Belva Eagle, Fort Yates, Jane Semler, Ken Volk and Rose Powell, all of Selfridge, and her great-grandparents, Eda Semler, Bismarck, and Bert and Luella Volk, Selfridge. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Patrick John White Bull and Larry Semler and her uncle, Melvin White Bull. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)

Clarissa Berget
TURTLE LAKE -- Clarissa Berget, 90, died July 7, 2000, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Turtle Lake, with the Rev. Randy Emgarten officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:30 to 8 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake. Clarissa Angline Frylling was born Oct. 6, 1909, on a farm near Lidgerwood, to Olaf Bernard Fylling and Anna Emelia Eliason Fylling. She was the second child of 11 children. When she was 11 years old her folks moved and bought a farm near Ruso. She finished public school in Greatstone Township, then went on to high school in Velva. She worked for farm families, doing housework and milking cows. Clarissa and a friend decided to go to Minneapolis one day. They were on the road about two days, but there was plenty of work. They god jobs as maids doing housework, later moving back to Ruso. In 1933, Clarissa married Ronald Berget and they bought a 240-acre farm from Ronald's folks, Christ and Mary Berget. Ronald's folks lived with them and Clarissa took care of Christ as he was bedridden. In January of 1956, they rented out their farm and moved to Sacramento, Calif. After staying there for two years, they decided to come back to North Dakota and live on the farm. They were members of St. Olaf Lutheran Church eight miles north of Turtle Lake. In 1971 they sold their farm and built a new house on the farm, moving it to Turtle Lake later. They went to Mesa, Ariz. for a couple of winters. Clarissa was active in St. Olaf Ladies Aid and Senior Citizens. She enjoyed spending time at their cabin at Crooked Lake and always had a soft heart for children. She was known for her cinnamon rolls and homemade bread. Clarissa is survived by five sons and daughters-in-law, Rueben and Charlene, Sacramento, Charles and Janice, Libby, Mont., Larry and Judy, Bismarck, Russell and Sharon, Aurora, Colo., and Ron and Karen, Lindstrom, Minn.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Corrine and Bob Hoffman, Baldwin, Roselyn and Dan Casazza, Eureka, Mont., and Mary Ann and Dick Sheaffer, Madison, S.D.; 27 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and nine brothers and sisters. Clarissa was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one infant son, Donald; and one sister. The family prefers memorials to St. Olaf Lutheran Church.

Alvina R. Bollinger
TEMVIK -- Alvina R. Bollinger, 87, Temvik, died July 7, 2000, in her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hazelton, with the Rev. Eugene Roecker officiating. Burial will be in in Temvik Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, and will continue after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Alvina R. Bollinger was born June 16, 1913, at Medina, the daughter of John and Katherine (Wolfer) Hofmann. She attended school in Medina. On Dec. 3, 1929, she married Emil Bollinger at Linton and they made their home on a farm southwest of Hazelton. In 1938 they moved into Temvik. In 1942 they moved to Portland, Ore., where Alvina worked as a welder in the shipyards until 1945. They returned to Temvik. Her husband died in 1983. Alvina was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hazelton. She enjoyed reading and visiting. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, LeRoy and Jill Bollinger, Bismarck, and Robert and Carol Bollinger, Temvik; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Arthur Berreth, Linton. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Lucille; three grandsons; four brothers; and two sisters.

Annie Christmann
NAPOLEON -- Annie Christmann, 80, Napoleon, died July 9, 2000, in the Wishek hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Salem United Methodist Church, Napoleon, with burial in Napoleon Cemetery. She is survived by eight sons, Earl, Ashley, Wilbert, Dustin, Okla., Harry, Mandan, Jerry, Bismarck, Terry, Minot, Raymond, Greensboro, Ky., Gary, Napoleon, and Darrold, Napoleon; six daughters, Beverly Lyons, Bismarck, Delores Wurl, Napoleon, Shirley Christensen, Canon City, Colo., Sally Williams, Clarksville, Ind., Linda Morlock,, Medina, and Diana Christmann, Napoleon; 25 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Theresa Wuetke, Bismarck, and Minnie Johnson, Mary Eva Magnesen and Emma Kraft, all of Billings, Mont. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Napoleon)

Louise Eslinger
GARRISON -- Louise Eslinger, 83, Garrison, died July 10, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Garrison, with burial in Emmanuel Cemetery, rural Garrison. She is survived by three sons, Glenn, Bismarck, Gary, Upham, and Dennis, Garrison; and two brothers, Albert Henne, Bismarck, and Gottlieb Henne, Minot. (Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison)

DICKINSON -- Ann Hartwig, 76, Dickinson, died July 9, 2000, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MDT Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.

Margaret K. Jablonsky
DICKINSON -- Margaret K. Jablonsky, 93, Dickinson, died July 10, 2000, in a Dickinson nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery. She is survived by two sons, William, Dickinson, and Don, Argyle, Texas; three daughters, Irene Sickler, Dickinson, Dorothy Stoppleworth, Belfield, and Virg Fugere, West Fargo; 19 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one brother, Andy Heiser, Dickinson; and one sister, Lena Heiser, Dickinson. Grace Lillian Jahner
Grace Lillian Jahner, 85, Bismarck Baptist Home, died July 7, 2000, in the home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Grace was born Sept. 18, 1914, at Litchfield, Minn., to Jacob and Elgia (Lawrence) Coffin. She was raised and educated in Dodge. She married Paul J. Jahner in Bismarck on June 23, 1932. They farmed north of Bismarck for most of their lives and retired in 1985. Grace was a homemaker, enjoyed cooking, collecting recipes and visiting with many friends. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Lila and Walter Zachmeier, Mandan; one son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Francie Jahner, Las Vegas; one sister, Helen Klaudt, Kansas City, Kan.; six grandchildren and their spouses, Steven and Char, Scott and Kim, and Tim Zachmeier, Chanice and Terry Scheuerman, Kelly and Jay Graski, and Sean Jahner; four great-grandchildren; and her special friend, Lawrence Spitzer. Grace was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Marvalee Simon; her parents; and four siblings.

Olive Kopseng
HARVEY -- Olive Kopseng, 88, Harvey, died July 9, 2000, in the Harvey nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, Harvey, with burial in Sunnyside Cemetery, Harvey. She is survived by one son, Robert, Harvey; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Vi Garrison, Tacoma, Wash. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Florentine Kuntz
Florentine (Schaff) Kuntz, 69, Valley Springs, Calif., died July 7, 2000, in a Stockton, Calif. hospital. Services will be held today at the Holy Cross Church, in Linden, Calif. She is survived by five sons, Arnold, Arkansas, and Ronald, Dave, Jeff and Curtis, all of California; one daughter, Cindy, California; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Joseph Schaff and Albert Schaff, both of Mandan; and two sisters, Regina Landeis, Mandan, and Minnie Mizera, South Dakota.

John Pernell Paulsrud
BINFORD -- John Pernell Paulsrud, 90, formerly of Binsford, died July 8, 2000, in a Devils Lake care center. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Binford, with burial in Binford Cemetery. He is survived by one son, Thomas, Beulah; two daughters, Carolyn Gilbraith, Crary, and Marjorie Paulsrud, Devils Lake; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Arthur Rise
ARENA -- Arthur "Art" Rise, 86, Arena, died July 8, 2000, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church, Driscoll, with the Rev. Jo Olson officiating. Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, north of Driscoll. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service. Arthur Raymond Rise was born Oct. 4, 1913, in Arena, the son of Odin and Ida Christina (Aasen) Rise. He was raised and educated in Lein Township and helped with the family farm work until 1930, when he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. For three six-month periods of time, he worked with the CCC in Two Harbors, Minn., Park River, North Dakota, and Camp Sisters, Ore. Art retained life membership in the CCC Chapter 106. Returning from the CCC's, Art helped farm families in Willow City, and for two years following that, worked near Armstrong, Iowa, picking corn and working for a farm family until his return to Arena in 1939. Art was inducted into the U.S. Army on May 20, 1942, at Ft. Snelling, Minn. He received his basic training at Camp Wallace, Texas. Along with his 535 Searchlight military unit, he landed on the shores of Oran, Africa, during World War II. His anti-aircraft artillery battalion was involved in the invasion of southern France during the European-African Middle Eastern Theater. Art received many service medals for his war-time duty, and he was honorably discharged on Oct. 18, 1945. He returned to Arena and along with his brothers, Ernest and Irwin, operated the Rise family farm until its sale to a nephew in 1992. Art was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Arena, where he was secretary/treasurer, sang in the choir, and served on the church board. After Zion Lutheran closed, he became a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Driscoll. Art served as secretary/treasurer of zion Cemetery Association, served over 50 years as township treasurer, held life memberships in both VFW Post 1326 and American Legion Lloyd Spetz Post 1, and was a member of Driscoll's Men's Club and 30's Cllub. He enjoyed carpentry work, dancing, playing cards, and especially loved gardening and all the great years of farming. Art is survived by his sister, Clara Morris, Wilton; his sister-in-law, Alice Rise, Raymond, Wash.; former sisters-in-law, Mable Justice, Alexandria, Minn., and Evelyn Hart, Everett, Wash.; and many nieces, nephews and good friends. Art was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Olga Rise, Olive Deede and Selma Rise; and six brothers, Joseph, Clarence, Ernest, Irwin, Glenwood and Everett Rise.
