Lyla Kraft
Lyla Sayler Kraft, 53, Bismarck, died July 11, 2000 at her home after a struggle with cancer her approximately 18 years. A service of celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Calvary United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jim Cissell officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Lyla was born Aug. 10, 1946 in Bismarck, the daughter of Gilbert and Esther (Brogden) Sayler, her mother being from the Temvick/Hazelton area. She was raised and educated in Underwood, graduating in 1964. She graduated from Bismarck Junior College in 1965 and married Ronald L. Kraft from Wing in November. They had two children. She began employment with the State of North Dakota in 1965, working there for 15 years, 1965 thru 1979; State Tax Department, Data Entry Supervisor, transferred to Central Data Processing, librarian, transferred to the Regional Environmental Assessment Program, System Coordinator, and published documents and papers for the U.S. Department of Energy. She returned to college in 1979, at the University of Mary, obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing in 1984. She became a member in both the Sageway Honor Society of Nursing and the National Nurses Honor Society and taught First Aid/CPR night classes at the Bismarck Junior College. From 1982 thru 1987, she was active as a Parent Advisory Council member and PAC Chairperson of fund raising at Saxvik Elementary School. After graduating from the University of Mary in 1984, Lyla was employed at the local hospitals as a Coronary Care Registered Nurse and received the Higher Standard Award of Excellence. She started a used furniture store on Rosser Ave. continuing both jobs as an RN and running the shop until 1995, when moving the used furniture shop to Summit Blvd. Her husband joined her in 1990, giving up his job as manager of the Mandan Goodyear Tire Shop to take over the business which both continued to work together until recent health failure. She then moved to Houston, Texas, for a short time and participated in clinical trials. Lyla enjoyed her family, friends, family pets, her work, collecting antiques and meeting all the people in their business. She will miss and be missed by family, friends and business acquaintances who survive and love her. She is survived by her husband, Ronald L. Kraft, one son, Rodney Kraft; one daughter, Ronda Kraft; her mother, Esther Sayler Horst, all of Bismarck; one brother, Elton Sayler, Arizona; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Gilbert Sayler; her stepfather, Herbert Horst; and one brother, Trenton Sayler. Lyla wanted to express her recognition and appreciation to the following prayer groups: the Calvary United Methodist Church, Bismarck; and other prayer groups at Jamestown, Lemmon, S.D., Memphis, Tenn., Birmingham, Ala., Houston, Texas, and individual friends and relatives, you are so good. GRAND FORKS -- Kingdon Burger Magnusson, 95, formerly of Grand Forks, died July 14, 2000 in a Bismarck care center. Alvin E. Leapaldt
JAMESTOWN -- Alvin E. Leapaldt, 66, Jamestown, died July 12, 2000 at the Jamestown hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with the Rev. Robert Leiste officiating. Burial will be in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown. Alvin E. was born October 18, 1933, at the home of his paternal grandparents in Lowry Township near Woodworth, the son of Leno and Johanna (Herman) Leapaldt. He was baptized Nov. 19, 1933 at Trinity Lutheran Church, New Home, N.D. He was confirmed at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Pettibone. He attended rural school and graduated from Woodworth High School in 1951. He then worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyards, Bremerton, Wash., returning to Woodworth in the spring of 1952. He worked at Williston as a mechanic until entering the service in March of 1954. He and Della Jean Oberlander were married on March 13, 1955 at English Lutheran Church, Medina. Mr. Leapaldt than attended Radar School at Fort Manmouth, N.J. for nine months going to Korea for one year and being discharged at Fort Lewis, Wash. in March 1956. After returning from Korea he worked for Schall Farms, Agsco, Inc. and for Paul Goter Construction. In August, 1957 he purchased Paul Goter Construction and he and his wife began Leapaldt Construction, Inc. of which he was president. He was a charter member of Metal Building Dealer's Association, serving as vice president and director; also helped establish North Dakota Systems Builder's Association serving as director. Mr. Leapaldt received many awards in the construction industry. He served on the Renaissance Committee of Jamestown and JIDC helping to bring Rollerhome Mobile Co. to Jamestown in the late 1960's. Mr. Leapaldt was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, serving as President, Elder, Trustee, Sunday School Superindentent, Co-Chairman of Education Wing Addition and just recently Chairman of narthex expansion and elevator addition and was serving on the Board of Trustees. He enjoyed his work, hunting, golfing, playing cards, and time with his family. Alvin is survived by his wife, Della, Jamestown; four children, David (Julie) Leapaldt, St. Cloud, Minn.; Kathryn (Steven) Bietz, Bismarck; Denise (Daniel) Leapaldt-Johnson, Wilton; Joel (Teressa) Leapaldt, Bismarck; 13 grandchildren, Megan, Kristen and Samuel Leapaldt; Gretchen, Katie and Jack Bietz; Talia, Tanika, Tareena, Tienna, and Tucker Johnson; Tyre and Madeline Leapaldt; two sisters, Viola (Wally) Person, Bismarck, Carolyn (Kenneth) Troseth, Seattle, Wash.; three brothers, Edgar (Leona) Leapaldt, Fargo; Marvin (Dorothy) Leapaldt, Lincoln, Neb.; Terrance (Trudi) Leapaldt, Tampa, Fla.; and his mother-in-law Clarla Oberlander, Medina. Brent W. Lick
Brent W. Lick, 38, 2439 E. Boulevard, Bismarck, died July 11, 2000 at St. Paul, Minn. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 15, 2000 at Church of the Ascension, Bismarck with the Rev. Marvin Klemmer officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 3-5:00 p.m. today with a Vigil at 8:00 p.m., at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Brent was born April 24, 1962, at Bismarck, to Al and Angie (Stein) Lick. He was raised and educated in Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1980. He attended Valley City State College and received his undergraduate degree in 1985. He then attended Moorhead State College and received a Masters Degree in School Psychology. He married Jodi Keidel in 1986. Brent worked as a school psychologist in several school districts with his longest tenure at Jamestown. He loved children and was adept at working with kids with special needs and their families. He valued his work and always strived to be as professional as he possibly could. Brent was an outstanding athlete. In high school he was named to the All State basketball team in 1980. His Bismarck High School team placed third in the state championship game that year. Brent also participated in track and baseball in high school. At Valley City State College he participated in basketball and baseball and was named to the All Conference and All District teams. Brent loved his family and friends very much and put them in front of all else. Brent is survived by one daughter, Amy Jo Lick, and one son, Andrew Lick, both of Jamestown, his parents, Angie and Al Lick; one brother, Brad Lick and his maternal grandmother, Minnie Stein all of Bismarck; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by his wife, Angeline; one son, Wayne, Selz; five daughters, Jorinda Tripanier, Minneapolis, Eileen Axtman, Rugby, Cynthia Rieger, Grand Forks, Roxane Jahn, Minneapolis, Ronda patzer, Harvey; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and four brothers, Mike and Ambrose, both of Selz, Pius, Anamoose, and Edward, Las Vegas. Elizabeth Schneider
Elizabeth Schneider, 88, Bismarck, died peacefully after a long illness on July 12, 2000 at St. Vincent's Nursing Home. Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service where a rosary/vigil will be held at 7 p.m. that evening. Elizabeth was born Aug. 27, 1911 at Burnstad, the daughter of Marcus and Elizabeth (Scherr) Schmidt. She married Thomas W. Schneider on Oct. 6, 1930 at Burnstad. Her special interests were cooking, gardening, sewing, ceramics and birds. She enjoyed her family gatherings, especially her 4th of July picnic with her "baker's dozen" family of 13 children, and her very special interest with her husband in Schneider's Flowerama. She belonged to St. Mary's Altar Society and the Eagles Auxiliary. Elizabeth is survived by her husband, five sons and six daughters-in-law, Jerome and Deleila Schneider, Inez Schneider, Leo and Verene Schneider, Andrew and Ingrid Schneider, Stephen and Beverly Schneider, Anthony and Gloria Schneider, all of Bismarck; six daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Alex Gross, and Veronica and Allen Sauter, of Bismarck, Josephine and Raymond Tokach, Burnsville, Minn., Agnes and Robert McIntyre, Lakeville, Minn., Monica and Fred Schubert, Omaha, Neb., Annette and John Freund, Mahwah, N.J.; 39 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; and special friends of the family, Joyce Scherer and Susan Schneider. She is also survived by one brother, Martin Schmidt and one sister, Helen Aberle, all of Bismarck. Virgil Peter Simon
Virgil Peter Simon, 70, passed away July 12, 2000 at a Bismarck hospital, after a long battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, rural Mandan, with full military rites provided by VFW Post NO. 1326. There will be no visitation. Virgil was born at Glen Ullin, on Feb. 23, 1930, the eldest son of Joseph L. and Hubertina (Braun) Simon. In 1942, the family moved to Galion, Ohio, where he received most of his education. In 1947 the family moved back to Bismarck. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. After returning from military service he worked on the family farm attending Capitol Commercial College from 1955 to 1957, after which he worked various jobs. On Nov. 6, 1955, he married Margaret Bader at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bismarck. In 1979, he began working for the North Dakota State Capitol as an industrial engineer until his retirement in 1995. Virgil is survived by his wife, Margaret, Bismarck; one brother and sister-in-law, Clement and Marie Simon, Bismarck; one sister, Alberta Feser, Glen Ullin; one sister-in-law, Betty Simon, New Salem; one brother-in-law, Louis Metz, Dickinson; and many nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and nephews. He was loved and will be missed by many. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Gerald Simon; one sister, Bernetta Metz; and one niece, Denise Metz.
