Esther Schmitt
Esther Schmitt, 81, Bismarck, died Jan. 3, 2001, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jeff Tengesdal officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Mott Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Esther Ruth Schmitt was born March 9, 1919, at Regent, the daughter of Jacob and Albina (Bertsch) Schmitt. Esther was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church, Mott, and attended Chilton rural school. In 1996, (64 years after confirmation) she arranged for a reunion of five remaining members of her confirmation class. Esther moved to Bismarck in 1944 to work for Montgomery Ward, then located in downtown Bismarck. She joined the American Lutheran Church one week after the church (now known as Faith Lutheran) was organized. In 1951, she moved to Minneapolis where she worked for 30 years in the accounting department of what was then the Street Car Co., later becoming the Metropolitan Transit Co. Her church in Minneapolis (Calvary Lutheran) played an important part in her life for 39 years. She sang in the choir for 36 years, was one of the "quilters," served in a leadership capacity in the Altar guild for many years, and was an active member of Ruth Circle. Community life had much to offer, but a primary joy to Esther was singing with the Gospelaires, a group of 18 men and women from many denominations. They were often invited to sing in churches on Sunday evenings, but their most regular performances were at King Oscar's Restaurant on Sunday noons. An avid Twins fan, Esther attended many games. She enjoyed the opera, was active in Christian Business Women's Club and a bowling team. Esther managed to plan frequent travels -- she attended the Passion Play in Oberammergau, participated in many extensive European tours, joined a Bible study cruise in the Caribbean, visited the Holy Land, and accompanied friends to numerous vacation spots in the United States. Esther retired in 1981 and then became active as a volunteer in AARP committees and their sponsored events. In 1990, she moved back to Bismarck. It was difficult to leave her host of Minneapolis friends but she wanted to be closer to family members and more available to participate in family events. Here she became active at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church as one of the Quilters and the Dorcas/Esther circle. She volunteered her services in the Medcenter One Auxiliary and also for Mecenter One Foundation. She is survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law, Emanuel and Leona Schmitt, Mott, and the Rev. Otto and LaVerne Schmitt, Fargo; four sisters and one brother-in-law, Clara and Adam Oberlander, and Emma Kamka, all of Regent, and Lydia and Ida Schmitt, both of Bismarck. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Alma Erlenbusch and Martha Frisvold; and an infant brother and sister. The family prefers memorials to Good Shepherd Organ Fund and Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center.
