Conrad H. Stretches
CANNON BALL -- Conrad H. Stretches, 39, Cannon Ball, died Dec. 30, 2000, in Cannon Ball. Services will be held at noon Friday at UCC Congregational Church, Cannon Ball, with Curtis Elk officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, at 2:30 p.m. Friday. A wake service will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday at Veterans Memorial Building, Cannon Ball. Conrad was born Feb. 27, 1961, at Fort Yates, to Jonathan S. and Annie (Running Bear) Stretches. He was raised and educated at Cannon Ball and graduated from Solen High School in 1979, where he was an honor student and basketball player. He had a business administration degree from the military and was working on an associate of arts degree in early childhood at Fort Berthold Community College, Twin Buttes. Conrad received a medal as a sharp shooter from the U.S. Marines and enjoyed hunting and horseback riding. He is survived by two children, Gerretta and Conrad Stretches Jr.; one granddaughter, La Shea Eagle, Cannon Ball; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Iola Stretches, Cannon Ball, and Mary Ann and Roy Morsette, Twin Buttes; one brother and sister-in-law, Jonathan and Almeda Stretches Jr., Cannon Ball; one half-brother, Floyd Stretches; and many nieces and nephews. Conrad was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Rudolph and Delano; and two sisters, Caroline Halsey and Alfreda Stretches. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Samantha Rose Erman
MCHENRY -- Samantha Rose Erman, 7, rural McHenry, died Dec. 31, 2000 of injuries sustained in an automobile accident east of Voltaire. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, at St. John's Catholic Church, New Rockford, with burial in Prairie Home Cemetery. She is survived by her parents, Grant and Lorraine Erman; her brother, Matthew, at home; and her maternal grandmother, Rose Schmidt, Rugby. (Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford)
Clara Gabriel
Clara Gabriel, 77, Bismarck, died Jan. 6, 2001 in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at noon Wednesday, at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at St. Vincents Care Center, and noon-9 p.m. at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. There will be no visitation at the church. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at Eastgate Funeral Service. Clara Glatt was born May 20, 1923, seven miles northeast of Venturia the daughter of John and Mariann (Wald) Glatt. She was raised and educated near Venturia. After moving to Bismarck, Clara attended Capital Commercial College and waitressed at O'Brian's Cafe for three years. In 1946, she began a 33 year, nine month work career as a toll operator for Northwest Bell Telephone Company, and was presented an award for 30 accident-free years of service. Clara married Carl E. Gabriel on Nov. 16, 1948 at Church of St. Mary in Bismarck. They were members of Church of St. mary, Eagles and Elks Clubs, and Clara was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Clara enjoyed working in her garden and with her flowers. She liked to cook, crochet and embroider, and listen to music. She and Carl enjoyed playing cards and Bingo. Clara is survived by her brother, Frank Glatt, Seattle, Wash.; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Elizabeth Bracil and Katherina Holbrook, both of Salinas, Calif., Barbara and Joe Salwei, and Rosemary Jund, all of Bismarck, and Sylvester Greenberger, California; one sister-in-law, Rose Glatt, Kent, Wash.; and many nieces, nephews and good friends. Clara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; two brothers, John and Conrad Glatt; and two sisters, Ann Parrish and Magdalena Greenberger. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Paul E. Ward
Paul E. Ward, 43, Mandan, died Dec. 30, 2000, in his home. A rosary and prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Paul was born Aug. 28, 1957, the son of Harold and Rosina (Becker) Ward in Los Angeles. He was raised and educated in California and moved to Bismarck in 1997. He is survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Steven Zahn
Steven Zahn, 75, 820 W. Sweet Ave., died Jan. 1, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Thursday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Steven was born Oct. 18, 1925, at Hague, to Joseph and Magdalena (Schmidt) Zahn. He was raised and educated in Hague. He served in the Armed Services during World War II. He married Clara Buechler, Feb. 6, 1950, in Hague. After their marriage, they moved to Bismarck where he worked as a forklift operator at the Super Valu warehouse for 33 years. He liked gardening, woodworking, walking, reading and visiting, especially with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Clara; eight daughters and seven sons-in-law, Cynthia and Curtis Sprenger, Bismarck, Clarice and John Davis, Aurora, Colo., Charlene and Ronald Busch, Lakewood, Colo., Charmaine and Steven Roethler, Maple Grove, Minn., Colette and Paul Sukut, and Cheryl and Randy Remmick, all of Bismarck, Carla and Richard Gartner, Fargo, and Connie Zahn, Bismarck; four sisters, Frances Langevin, Hopkins, Minn., Clara Zahn, St. Louis Park, Minn., Otillia Silbernagel, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Barbara Welder, Mobridge, S.D.; one brother, Valentine "Wally" Zahn, Alexandria, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Calvin Sprenger, Amy (Scott) Senger, Rebecca Roethler, Valerie Gartner, Stephanie Gartner, Joseph Gartner, Stuart Gartner, Elizabeth Sukut and Rachel Remmick; and two great-grandchildren, Shelbie Sprenger and Calista Sprenger. Steven was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Linda; and six sisters and four brothers, Theresia, Elizabeth, Marie, Matt, Andrew, Johnnie, Ann, Catherine, Martin and Rose. The family prefers memorials to American Heart Association. The greatest gift we ever had, came from God. We call him Dad.
Elvera A. Becker
NEW SALEM -- Elvera A. Becker, 77, New Salem, died Dec. 29, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST today at Peace Church, New Salem. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Elvera Adeline Toepke was born on Oct. 24, 1923, in Dickinson, the daughter of Barney and Minnie (Wendt) Toepke. Raised in the Judson area, she graduated from Judson High School in 1941. She married Edwin G. Becker on Oct. 25, 1941, in Judson. They farmed east of Judson for many years until moving to New Salem in 1979. Elvera was employed at banks in Judson, Bismarck and New Salem. After moving to New Salem, she worked for Elm Crest Nursing Home for a number of years. Edwin died on Jan. 25, 2000. She enjoyed bingo and playing cards, particularly pinochle, television and reading. She and Edwin enjoyed fishing in their younger days. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marlene K. and Harry Bitterman, Seattle, Wash.; her son and daughter-in-law, Rodney D. and Rhoe Ann, Tacoma, Wash.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Kermit J. and Peggy Toepke, New Salem; two brothers-in-law, Willard Becker, West Orange, Texas, and Raymond Zeutschel, Tacoma, Wash. John Brandt
John Brandt, 59, Mandan, died Dec. 30, 2000, in a Billings, Mont. hospital as a result of injuries sustained in a skiing accident. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan. Committal services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, with military services by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Posts. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Friday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a prayer service will begin at 7 p.m. Friday. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. John was born Sept. 2, 1941, at Rolette, the son of Emil and Marie (Tastad) Brandt. He graduated from Willow City High School in 1959, and then attended Wahpeton State School of Science for three years. He served in the U.S. Army from December 1963 to September 1965, and married Jackie Padilla on Dec. 23, 1965, at Turtle Lake. He worked for Fisher Motors and Cummins Diesel in Minot before moving to Mandan where he began his career as an environmental aviation maintenance specialist for the Federal Aviation Administration. He married Mary Ferebee Lobb on Aug. 10, 2000, in Bismarck. An avid hunter and fisherman, John was happiest when he was outdoors and spent many pleasant hours at the Brandt brothers hunting lodge in Willow City. He was genuinely gifted with an aptitude for mechanics and building, whether working with wood, electronics or machines of any kind. John is survived by many friends and family members, including his wife, Mary, Mandan; his daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Bob Chavarria, Eugene, Ore.; his son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Tami, Milwaukee, Wis.; his grandchildren, Cassidy and Ethan Brandt; his mother, Marie Brandt, Minot; his sisters, Jane Uthus and her husband, David, Minot, and Susan Brandt, Dunedin, Fla.; his brother, Peter, and his wife, Karen, Eugene, Ore.; and nieces and nephews, John and Brandt Uthus, and Shawn and Natasha Brandt. He was preceded in death by his father, Emil.
