Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday, at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. MST Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Gillette. Further arrangements are pending with Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah.

Pauline Huber
BENTLEY -- Pauline Huber, 87, formerly of Bentley, died Dec. 29, 2000 in a Minot care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Trinity Homes Centre Chapel, Minot, with burial at noon Wednesday, at Bentley Cemetery. She is survived by her sons, James, Winslow, Ariz., Vernon, Aurora, Colo., and LaMonte Huber, Burlington Township, N.J.; one daughter, Lana Burdick, Minot; five grandchildren and one great-grandson; and one sister, Clara Leno, Bismarck. Claude Marion
HETTINGER -- Claude Marion, 81, Hettinger, died Dec. 30, 2000 in the Hettinger care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Tuesday, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hettinger, with the Rev. Fr. John Mathai officiating, and burial in Hettinger Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-6 p.m. MST today at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger, and for one hour prior to the service at the church. A parish vigil service with rosary will be said at 7 p.m. MST at Holy Trinity Church. Claude William Marion was born July 5, 1919 in Watauga, S.D. to John and Mary (Clancy) Marion. While there the Marion family started and operated a brick plant and Claude received his early education. They moved to Scranton where he completed his schooling. The family later operated another brick plant in New Leipzig. In 1937, the Marions moved to Hettinger where he and his brother Leonard worked for their father at the brickyard. When their father retired in 1954, Claude and Leonard bought the business and operated it until the mid 1960's, when they began working solely in masonry and brick laying. They built apartment buildings, many local business places including the original clinic, as well as numerous homes and buildings in the surrounding area. Claude was instrumental in the construction of the Holy Trinity Church and active in its upkeep. He continued in the construction business with his son, Mike until his recent illness. He was united in marriage to Geraldine Lorraine "Gerry" White on Dec. 26, 1942 in Minneapolis. They loved to travel, seeing most of the United States, parts of the Orient, and Europe. Claude enjoyed "dropping in" on old friends and family as they traveled. Pheasant hunting, fishing, bowling and gardening were favorite pastimes. He always enjoyed a good game of cards, whether bridge or poker. Claude was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the President's Club of the University of Mary in Bismarck. The family requests that memorials be sent to the Home on the Range for Boys. Grateful for being a part of his life are his sons, Dr. Don (Helene) Marion, Pittsburgh, Pa., and Mike (Sandy) Marion, Hettinger; his daughters, Margaret (Doug) Brettin, Minnetrista, Minn., Claudia (Mike) Bendel, Rochester, Minn., and Dr. Susan Marion, Dixon, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Bunny Marion, Hettinger. A brother, Leonard and sisterr, Rita Cors, preceded him in death. (Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home, Hettinger)

Reinhold Renschler
STEELE -- Reinhold Renschler, 96, Steele, died Dec. 30, 2000 in the Steele care center. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, at Steele United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Olson officiating. Burial will be in Driscoll Cemetery. Visitation begins from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday and 1-9 p.m. Wednesday, at Perry Funeral Home and one hour before services at the church. Reinhold was born June 25, 1904 at Kulm to John and Dorothy (Schock) Renschler. He was raised and educated in Kulm. He married Anna Fercho at Napoleon on Oct. 7, 1927 and they farmed at Dana, Persian Lake, Sterling, Driscoll and in 1941, south of Tuttle. As a young man, he enjoyed breaking horses and in later years, reminiscing with friends. He retired in 1969. His wife Anna died in November of 1977, and he moved to the Golden Manor in 1997. He is survived by one daughter and two sons-in-law, Leone and Allen Wanner, Mandan, and Emmett Young, Steele; one son and two daughters-in-law, Leo and Susy Renschler, Driscoll, and Helen Renschler, Bismarck; one brother and sister-in-law, Edwin and Melita Renschler, Bismarck; and eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Reinhold was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Goldie Young; and a son, Raymond. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

Michael Robert Sundberg
MINOT -- Michael Robert Sundberg, 22, Minot, died Dec. 29, 2000 in a Minot hospital following a lengthy illness. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, at First Presbyterian Church, Minot, with burial in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot. He is survived by his parents, Bob and Linda Sundberg, Minot; his sisters, Nancy Burgard, Minot, and Becky Haskins, Williston; and his grandmothers, Margit Sundberg, New Rockford, and Kathryn Huddleson, Minot. Jake Wutzke
ELGIN -- Jake Wutzke, 92, Elgin, died Dec. 29, 2000 in the Elgin hospital of pancreatic cancer. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elgin, with the Rev. Tom Hallowell officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Elgin. The son of Wilhelm and Justina (Zeh) Wutzke, Jacob was born on July 19, 1908 at Kuruschieka, Bessarabia, South Russia. He emigrated to the United States through Ellis Island with his parents in 1910. Jacob was raised and educated in Elgin. He married Anna Rivinius on Oct. 26, 1932 at Elgin. After their marriage, Jake lived most of his life in the Elgin area with the exception of one year in Stevensville, Mont. and one year in Bismarck. Jake was a farmer at heart and he also worked in the oil business as well as for the Montana-Dakota Utilities company. He was a land agent in the right-of-way and pipeline department out of Glendive, Mont. After 15 years of service, Jake resigned from MDU and opened an insurance agency in Elgin, which he ran for several years. After which he returned to work for MDU on a part time basis and started a hobby farm, of Elgin. Jake loved to travel and he enjoyed spending the cold winters in the south. Jake loved to go fishing, camping, hunting and trapping. He especially enjoyed fishing with his wife, grandchildren and friends. Jake was grateful for the joy of friendship -- he always said that he never met a stranger. Jake was a charter member of Zion Lutheran Church and for several years he served on the church council and taught Sunday School. Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Anna; and daughters, Hilda Schultz, Las Vegas, Florence and Gordon Baesler, Bismarck, Rudy and Pete Koepplin, Elgin, Nelda and Leo Oster, Bismarck; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Jake loved his family immensely. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Delores Ding and Agnes; his parents; one sister, Marie Ruff; and six brothers, Christ, William, Emmanuel, John, Oscar and Art. LINTON -- Herman Myles Feist, 37, Linton, died Jan. 11, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton. Further arrangements are pending at Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

Dorothy E. Gerner
FARGO -- Dorothy E. Bien Gerner, 83, Detroit Lakes, died Jan. 5, 2001, in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Grace Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, Minn., with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Arlow Bien and Warren Bien, both of Bismarck; seven daughters, Evonne Meyhoff, Careadell Richter, Karen Maynard, Janet Cincush and Ranae Sexton, all of Detroit Lakes, Diane Rennie, Ironton, Mo., and Corrine Munson, Bloomington, Minn.; 28 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Clement J. Knoll
Clement J. "Dusty" Knoll, 80, 308 Third Ave. N.E., Mandan, died Jan. 11, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Jacob Schumacher officiating. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military rites by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 707 and American Legion Post 40. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, followed by a parish vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the funeral home until service time Monday. Clement J. "Dusty" Knoll was born April 4, 1920, in Mandan, the son of Michael and Barbara (Kuntz) Knoll. He attended St. Joseph School and Mandan High School. Dusty went to work for Irv Young servicing juke boxes in 1939. In 1941, he went to work for Northern Pacific Railroad in Mandan, and worked at various jobs in the Mandan Roundhouse. On March 23, 1942, Dusty was inducted into the armed forces at Fort Snelling in Minnesota. He was then assigned to a cadre to form the 90th Infantry division at Camp Barkley, Texas, near Abilene. On Oct. 3, 1942, Dusty returned to Mandan on furlough and on Oct. 5, 1942, he married his childhood sweetheart, Frances Stumpf. After he completed radio electronics school in Fort Sill, Okla., Dusty rejoined his unit in Indio, Calif. Following this, he was shipped to Fort Dix, N.J., and assigned overseas to London, England. While in London the 345th was sent to Wales for subsequent departure for France on D Day, June 6, 1944, where he was assigned to General Patton's third Army. Dusty was severely wounded in Belgium in the Battle of the Bulge and was subsequently awared the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. After a long recuperation in France and England, he returned to the United States where he was honorably discharged on Oct. 20, 1945. He then returned to Mandan and his job at the Northern Pacific Railroad. Dusty was a member of American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans Club. Dusty served as chairman of the joint Legislative Board of Brotherhoods as well as the legislative representative for United Transportation Union Local 1344 in Mandan. He was instrumental in the promotion of railroad safety laws and alleviating the railroad boxcar shortage in the state. In 1968, Dusty was elected as a director of the Northern Pacific Benefits Association Yellowstone District. Dusty worked for the railroad for 42 years and retired in June 1982. Dusty is survived by his wife, Frances; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Leland, Signal Hill, Calif., Michael and Diane, West Liberty, Iowa, and Mark and Barbara, Richfield, Minn.; one daughter and son-in-law, Lynette and Dalles Waldner, Lake Vermilion, Minn.; four grandchildren, Jodie, Rikka, Christopher and Dustin; two great-grandchildren, Madisen and Josie Mae; one brother and sister-in-law, John and Ethel, Duluth, Minn.; and one sister and brother-in-law, Anna Marie and Hubert Plymale, Townsend, Mont. Clement was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and two sisters.

John Schlafman
TURTLE LAKE -- John Schlafman, 77, Turtle Lake, died Jan. 11, 2001, in the Turtle Lake hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, with burial in Turtle Lake Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Laura; one son, Melvin, Beulah; two daughters, Elaine Wahl and Linda Harr, both of Turtle Lake; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Darlene Sahr, Porcupine, S.D.; and four brothers, Herbert, Bismarck, Reuben, Jamestown, Arnold, Loon Lake, Wash., and Eugene, Florence, Ariz. Robert Charles Burch
Robert Charles Burch, 65, Riverside, Calif., formerly of Mandan, died Jan. 7, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Riverside, with burial in Riverside National Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Arlene; one daughter, Laura Webb, Riverside; one son, Richard, San Diego; one brother, Harold, Mandan; and two sisters, Marian Oakland, Cartwright, and LaVonne Bahm, Tacoma, Wash. Herman Myles Feist
LINTON -- Herman Myles Feist, 37, Linton, died Jan. 11, 2001, in his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his parents, Herman and Nancy Feist, Linton; two brothers, Jeff, Pollock, S.D., and Mark, Linton; and two sisters, Beth Feist, Minot, and Becky Humann, Linton. Afra E. Helphrey
Afra E. "Ott" Helphrey, 84, 2425 Hillview Ave., Bismarck, died Jan. 13, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. George's Episcopal Church, Bismarck, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday at Dakota Memorial Chapel. Afra E. Gibford was born May 28, 1916, in Iowa Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Anna Gibford. She was raised in Newton, Iowa. She attended school there and at St. Katherine's Episcopal School in Davenport, Iowa. She graduated from high school in Newton, Iowa, in 1933. Ott married Earl L. Helphrey on May 16, 1937, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Newton, Iowa. They lived in many different cities, raising their children in Sidney, Mont., and Bismarck. They spent the last 20 years in Bismarck, their "dream retirement place." They enjoyed many years at Lake Isabel, fishing and being with nature. Earl died in 1990. Ott worked in various retail markets throughout her life, as well as raising their three children and caring for the elders in her family. As important as her boys were to her, she was involved in many years of scouting. She and Earl enjoyed teaching square and round dancing. She took joy in volunteering her reading services to the blind, by radio, and at the North Dakota State Library for several years. Ott was faithful in her religion and was currently a member of St. George's Episcopal Church. She is survived by her three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dave, and his special friend, Carol, Bill and Pam, and Jim and Peggy, all of Bismarck; six grandchildren, Elizabeth and her husband, Tim Kramer, and Luke, all of Bismarck, Scott, San Clemente, Calif., Ray, Palm Springs, Calif., Jim W., New Town, and Kris and her husband, Jim Thompson, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and four great-grandchildren, Samantha and Courtney Kramer, Bismarck, and Mason Helphrey and Megan Thompson, Sioux Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Earl.
