Henry P. Geiger
Henry P. Geiger, 83, Bismarck, died Jan. 21, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at noon Thursday at Church of St. Mary's, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ted Gustin officiating. Burial will be held in the spring at St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, where a rosary and prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Henry was born Oct. 27, 1917, the son of Prokopius and Mary Ann (Doll) Geiger, in rural Morton County. He attended school in rural Morton County, and began farming and ranching in the 30s. He married Monica Schmidt on June 17, 1941, in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Mandan. They farmed and ranched in Morton County until 1947 when they moved to Burleigh County, where he farmed and ranched until his death. He was a member of St. Mary's Church from 1947 to 2001. He was on the Gibbs Township board for 20 years, and was also a member of the Eagles Club for 25 years. Henry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Monica; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Henry Jr. and special friend Yvonne Schafer, and Gilbert and Becky, all of Center; three grandchildren, Gregory, Center, and Christine and Elizabeth, both of Fargo; one brother, Chris P., Mandan; four sisters, Pauline Irick, Great Bend, Kan., Eleanor Freidt, Mandan, Frances Schwartzenburger, Renton, Wash., and Clementine Freidt, Minot; two sisters-in-law, Katheryn (George) Geiger and Katherine (Ralph) Geiger, both of Mandan; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ralph and George; one sister, Josephine Freidt; and an infant daughter, Monica Marie. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Alexius Hospice, 12th Avenue and Main Street, Bismarck, ND 58501.
Elaine Kirkpatrick
Elaine "Susie" Kirkpatrick, 56, Box Elder, S.D., died Jan. 22, 2001, of cancer in a Rapid City hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Friday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Box Elder, with the Rev. Dennis Bossman officiating. Burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home, Rapid City. Elaine was born Sept. 2, 1944, at Lemmon, S.D., to Hiram and Elizabeth (Janish) Crow. She attended school in Lemmon and in 1963 was married to Kenneth Zent. The couple were divorced in 1972. On Oct. 18, 1973, she was married to Conrad (Kirk) Kirkpatrick. They lived in Lemmon until 1981. The couple then moved to Billings, Mont., and relocated to Rapid City in 1987. Elaine was a partner at Sam's Club. She is survived by her husband, Conrad; four sons, Kenneth Zent Jr., Great Falls, Mont., Rory Klien, Chamlin, Minn., and Steve and Kerry Klien, both of Minot; four daughters, Nancy Kadrmas, Grassy Butte, Stephanie Clark, Burlington, Vt., Deanna Moriarty, Rapid City, and Vicki Duscherer, Velva; one sister, Ellen Mock, El Centro, Calif.; two brothers, Jack, San Angelo, Texas, and Robert, Bison, S.D.; 19 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and one sister in infancy. A memorial has been established.
Clarence Kukla
KILLDEER -- Clarence Kukla, 65, Killdeer, died Jan. 22, 2001, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MST Thursday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Killdeer, with the Revs. Aanen Gjovik and Jerry Ruelle, OSB, officiating. Burial will be in Killdeer Cemetery, with military rites provided by Ezra Barrows Post No. 46. Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Price-Murphy Funeral Home, Dickinson, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church. Clarence was born to Nick and Rose (Shuck) Kukla in the Fayette community, N.D., on April 22, 1935. He was raised in the Fayette community and attended rural schools. Clarence graduated from Killdeer High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Navy from November of 1955 to August of 1957. He married Gloria Braun in Dickinson on Aug. 19, 1970. Clarence worked for Farmers Union Oil Company in Killdeer for 40 years, serving as manager for 27 of those years. He retired Jan. 1, 1998. Clarence served on the Dunn County Housing Authority for many years. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Pheasants Forever, Elks and enjoyed golfing, gardening, flowers and fishing. Clarence traveled to the Ukraine representing Citizens Network for Foreign Affairs made up of agribusiness and volunteers funded by USA Agency for International Development. He is survived by one son, Dale Kukla, Albert Lea, Minn.; one stepdaughter, Janine Stauffer, Gering, Neb.; three grandchildren, Landen Lizakowski, Devils Lake, and Jessica and Katherine Stauffer, both of Gering; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Laurence and Joyce Kukla, Jamestown, Donald and Pat Kukla, Killdeer, and Nick Kukla, Kensal; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Florence and Willie Wilkinson, Sammamish, Wash., and Frances and Leo Bell, Killdeer. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Bernard R. "Bernie" Huber, 61, Mandan, died Jan. 19, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Mandan. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from1 to 9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. Bernard was born July 31, 1939, in Mandan, the son of Gust and Elsie (Menke) Huber. He attended Crown Butte No. 2 School and graduated from Mandan High School in 1958. Bernie farmed until 1966, when he moved to Mandan. He worked for various area gas stations before beginning his employment with Melroe in 1973. He enjoyed playing pinochle and cribbage with his family and was an active member of the Men's Club at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Bernie is survived by one sister, Edna Huber, Bismarck; and one brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Ruby Huber, Mandan. He was preceded in death by his parents. In lieu of flowers, Bernie's family requests memorials to Redeemer Lutheran Church, Mandan.

Richard P. Miller
Richard P. "Dick" Miller, 80, Mandan, died Jan. 21, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital with his family gathered around him. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Stephen Eastin officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, with military services by the Mandan American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts. Visitation will be held from1 to 9 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue one hour before services at the church. Richard was born June 17, 1920, in Bismarck, the son of Philip H. and Olga (Laudermilk) Miller. Raised in Washburn, he graduated from Bismarck High School before working with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II from Dec. 3, 1941, to Sep. 20, 1945. He was involved in the European Air Offensive and received the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, the American Theater Service Medal and the American Defense Service Medal, as well as a Presidential Unit Citation with two Oak Leaf Clusters. Dick married Maxine Allensworth on April 22, 1946. They lived in Bismarck. A master electrician, Dick was part owner of O&M Electric in Bismarck prior to his employment with Dakota Electric Supply Co. Maxine died on April 17, 1978. He was united in marriage to Helen Katzke Maki on Sept. 2, 1979. After his retirement in 1982, he and Helen traveled extensively in this country and abroad. He particularly loved the time he was able to spend traveling with Helen in their motor home. A prolific reader, he enjoyed historical works, especially those relative to the Bible. Science fiction was also a subject that intrigued him. An intelligent man, he enjoyed working with his hands, whether it involved electricity, plumbing or woodworking. A quiet person, Dick could convey more with a look or a glance than most people could do with words. He had been in ill health for the past three years. He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Amvets, Elks, Eagles and Moose Clubs. Dick is survived by and will be deeply missed by those who survive him, including his wife, Helen; one daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Jim Gietzen, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, Philip "Boris" and Cheryl, Bismarck; nine grandchildren, Gene, Ruby, Richard, Hannah, Philip, Barbara, Loren and Debbie Gietzen, and Samara "Sammy" Miller, who gave her grandfather the name "Pa"; one brother and sister-in-law, Norris and Jenny Miller, Grand Junction, Colo.; stepchildren, Curtis Maki, Grand Junction, Colo., Pam and Rick Berge, Mandan, Karla and Dan Eisenbiesz, El Toro, Calif., and Deborah Allard, Portland, Ore.; and step-grandchildren, Paul "P.J." and Jory Berge, and Scott and Troy Eisenbiesz. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Maxine; and two brothers, Clarence and Leland.

Paul Edward Zielsdorf
DICKINSON -- Paul Edward Zielsdorf, 91, Dickinson, died Jan. 21, 2001, in the Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Thursday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson, with the Rev. Steven Tangen officiating. Entombment will be in Dickinson Mausoleum. Paul Zielsdorf was born to Lewis and Barbara (Zeman) Zielsdorf in Black River Falls, Wis., on Aug. 23, 1909. At the age of 1, his family moved to Beach where he grew up and graduated from Beach High School in 1926. He attended Dakota Business College in Fargo. Paul married Doris Wilner on Aug. 29, 1932, in Baker, Mont. They lived in Beach, Rhame and Dickinson. He managed the Rhame Farmers Equity Elevator and was a partner in the Rhame Implement and Hardware. In 1958, they moved to Dickinson where he was an agent for Northwestern National Life Insurance Company. He is survived by his wife, Doris, St. Luke's Home, Dickinson; two daughters and one son-in-law, Joan and Glenn Whaley, West Fargo, and Karen Spall, Columbus, Neb.; five grandchildren, Roger (Melanie) Whaley, Steven (Linda) Whaley and Thomas Whaley, all of Fargo, Michael (Cheryl) Spall, Pocatello, Idaho, and Jean (Douglas) Popham, Tucson, Ariz.; two great-grandchildren, Erika and Mark Whaley; and one sister-in-law, Thelma Zielsdorf, Beach. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Simmons and Rachel Ross; and one brother, Charles. Memorials are preferred to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary or the donor's choice.

Catherine F. Ressler
Catherine "Katie" F. Ressler, 93, died Jan. 18, 2001 in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughters Rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Sunday, and a parish vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday evening all at the funeral home. Visitation will continue until service time at Weigel Funeral Home. Katie Volk Ressler was born on Nov. 25, 1907 in Hague, the daughter of George and Barbara (Miller) Volk. She was one of 13 children born to German-Russian immigrants who farmed in the Hague and Selfridge area. On Nov. 13, 1928, Katie married Joseph P. Ressler. They moved southwest of St. Anthony where they farmed and endured many hardships as well as good times. Katie was a very patient and loving mother. She was busy raising 13 children. After moving to Mandan, Katie worked at the TP Motel for 14 years. She enjoyed her work and her hobbies, which included gardening, sewing, reading and playing cards. Katie was a kind and gentle woman who loved taking care of her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, all of whom were always welcomed to spend time at her home. She was known for her kind heart and good German cooking, especially her homemade breads and canned pickles. After moving to Liberty Heights, she did volunteer work at the nursing home for eight years, which most recently was her home. Katie had been a resident of the Medcenter One Care Center since April 1993. She was very happy at the nursing home and everyone was extremely kind to her. She became a resident of St. Vincent's Care Center since Sept. 1, 2000. Katie made a contribution to the lives she leaves behind. She was selected "Volunteer of the Year" at the Medcenter One Care Center. She is survived by five sons and three daughters-in-law, Ted, Chicago, Ill., George, Bismarck, Emanuel and Lorraine, Ray and Eugenia, all of Mandan, Willie and Barbara, Minot; six daughters and four sons-in-law, Sally Bullinger, Rapid City, S.D., Maureen and Howard Renz, Queens, N.Y., Marlene and Leonard Kraft, Bismarck, Glorine and Larry Barnhardt, Boise, Idaho, Luella Berman, Urbana, Ill., and Alvina and Ed Sakoff, Chicago, Ill.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Agnes Volk, Mobridge, S.D., and Englebert and Luella Volk, Selfridge; one sister, Elizabeth Volk, Hague; 26 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and a special friend, Desiree Vanoosting, New Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, who died Nov. 24, 1975; her parents; two sons, Leo and Edward; seven brothers, Al, Anton, Joe, Frank, Matt, Emanuel and Raymond; and two sisters, Rose Roth and an infant sister.
