Edna Fricke
Edna Fricke, 96, Bismarck, died Feb. 23, 2000 in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jacob Kincaid officiating. Burial will be in Baldwin Cemetery, Baldwin. Visitation will be from 5-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, both at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Edna Rupp was born Feb. 26, 1903 in Cottonwood County, Minn., the daughter of Gustaf and Amalia (Miller) Rupp. The family moved to Sarona, in northern Wisconsin, in 1907 and then to Baldwin in 1916. She graduated from Bismarck High School in 1921 and the following four years she taught in rural schools in Burleigh County. On June 1, 1925, she married William F. Fricke and they farmed in the Baldwin area. For a short time they lived in Baudette, Minn., and then returned to North Dakota. They moved to the Fricke family farm in 1940 and moved to Bismarck in 1972. She enjoyed gardening, quilting and playing bridge at the Senior Center and was a member of the Church Circle and Bible Study. She is survived by one daughter, Lorraine Vollan, Bismarck; three sons and daughters-in-law, Howard and Olive, Baldwin, Dr. Roger and Doris, Bismarck, and Warren and Audrey, San Jose, Calif.; two sisters, Laura Meyer, Bismarck, and Florence Swanson, Miles City, Mont.; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter, Ruth; her parents; one brother, Delbert; and three sisters, Edith, Gladys and Delores. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Dakota Zoo or charity of your choice. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)
Jacob Friesz
Jacob Friesz, 82, 126 Boise Ave., died Feb. 21, 2000, in his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Marvin Klemmer officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. tonight, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. Jacob Friesz, the son of Liborius and Evenia (Hopfauf) Friesz, was born Feb. 20, 1918, in Fallon. He was raised and educated in the Fallon area. On Nov. 21, 1938, he was united in marriage to Mathilda Schmidt, in Odense. They farmed in the Fallon area until 1979, when they moved to Bismarck. Jacob continued his farming until his retirement in 1981. Jacob was a member of Mandan Eagles and the former Fallon Verein. Jacob loved the farm, the rolling hills of golden grain and especially the Hereford cattle he raised. He always had a positive attitude and a great smile. His friendliness always drew one near to him. He taught himself to play the saxophone and clarinet, and played in a dance band called the Harmony Kings. After his retirement, he continued his enjoyment of old-time music and would spend time in the outdoors fishing. He is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Loren, Waseca, Minn., Richard and Diane, Bismarck, Duane, Salt Lake City, and Dennis and Faye, Fargo; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Marlene and Ed Zaharis, Tracy, Calif., Leona and Robert Dillon, Red Lodge, Mont., Bernadine Tosterud, Grand Junction, Colo., Kathleen Kopp, Bismarck, and Sharon and John Michlitsch, Fargo; 11 grandchildren, Amie Friesz, Brad Dillon, Dean Wiens, Wendy Johnson, Rebecca, Brian and Janelle Kopp, Laurie Friesz, Christy Hausauer, Tim Michlitsch and Jessie Erling; and two great-grandchildren, Alex and Hope Hausauer. Jacob was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mathilda, who died Jan. 26, 1998; three brothers, his twin brother, John, Ralph and Nick; and four sisters, Barbara Bohl, Annie Lanz, Pauline Friesz and Rose Knoll.

LEEDS -- Helmer Helgeson, 92, Leeds, died Feb. 22, 2000 in the Rugby hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Minnewaukan. Johanna Hilsendager, 93, Morristown, S.D., died Feb. 22, 2000 in a Lemmon care hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Morristown. Burial will be in Morristown Cemetery. She is survived by three sons, John, Morristown, Gordon, Lemmon, and Frank, Grand Junction, Colo.; one daughter, Donna Maher, Morristown; two brothers, Lawrence Meyer, Lake Almanore, Calif., and Herman Meyer, Gresham, Ore.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Burton Naaden
Burton Naaden, 76, Detroit Lakes, Minn., and formerly of Braddock, died Feb. 21, 2000 in a Detroit Lakes nursing home. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, at Braddock Methodist Church. Burt was born and raised in Braddock, graduating from Braddock High School. He married Margaret Shwartz in 1945. They farmed and ranched in Braddock and Flasher. He worked as a brand inspector, a welder and in construction at West Fargo. Margaret died in 1976. Burt married Jearline Halvorson on Nov. 27, 1977. They retired to a lakeside home on Lake Eunice near Detroit Lakes. His hobby was fishing and when able, returning to the home ranch at Braddock for seeding and harvest. His pride and joy was his art, creating intricate beadwork enjoyed by relatives and friends including celebraties Willie Nelson, Williams and Rhee. Burt is survived by his wife, Jearline, Detroit Lakes; one son, Stewart (Beth), Coon Rapids, Minn.; two daughters, Nancy (Joe) Brown and Margaret Ann (Duane) Oscarson, Oklahoma, and seven grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Connie (Michael) Skidmore, N.C., and Wanda (Glenn) Spangler, Va.; two stepsons, Tyrone (Diane) Forde, Va., and Terry (Carla) Forde, Mandan; two brothers, Pete (Mary Ellen), Braddock, Bjorne (Betty), Mott; three sisters, Mamie (Arnold) Eilerton, Minneapolis, Olga Fallgatter, Steele, and Susie (Grant) Sherritt, State College, Penn. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thore and Birdie Naaden; his first wife, Margaret; one son, Lee; and brothers, Chris and Ted.

Esther Hoff
Esther Hoff, 79, Bismarck, died Feb. 24, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jeff Tengesdal officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Esther was born Dec. 17, 1920, in Medina, to Gottlieb and Fredricka Hins. She married Edwin Hoff, Oct. 8, 1939, in Oriska. Esther's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was an avid gardener and a day care provider for many years. She was a member of VFW and Eagles ladies auxiliaries. Esther is survived by her husband of 60 years, Edwin; one daughter and son-in-law, Ardis and Richard Lee, Baldwin; one son, Wesley, Bismarck; her grandchildren, Miles and Natalie Lee, Christine Lee and her fiance, Robert Fredrickson, Patrick Hoff and his fiance, Allison Norton, Syndey Hoff; great-grandchildren, Amber Lee and Jonathan Lee; four sisters, Helen Ackerman, Judd, Leah Hoffmann, Jamestown, Rachel Hoffman, Medina, and Clara Brastrup, Loveland, Colo. She is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
