Mary Wagner, 91, Sterling, Colo., died Feb. 10, 2000, in a Sterling, Colo. nursing home. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, Richardton, at a later date. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Larson, McVille, and Carol Elkins, Aurora, Colo.; three sons, Robert, Sterling, Colo., the Rev. Bill Wagner, Hazen, and the Rev. Lillie A. Bauer
Lillie A. Bauer, 86, Bismarck, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, died Feb. 16, 2000, peacefully at her home. Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Todd Hylden officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be held at the church one hour before services. Lillie was born July 31, 1913, near Tuttle, on the homestead farm of her parents, Hans and Dina (Friestad) Johnson. She grew up there and graduated from Tuttle High School. After receiving a two-year standard diploma from Minot State Teachers College, she taught in rural schools in Kidder County and McLean County. While she was teaching, Lillie met Wilbur "Bill" Bauer. They were married on Aug. 15, 1940. They lived on his parents' farm near Coleharbor and helped with the farming. They later moved to Bismarck where Lillie worked as a substitute teacher. When her children grew older she began working in retail sales at Morrey Alans, and later with the A.W. Lucas Co. Lillie and Bill lived at their current home for almost 40 years. They enjoyed dining out, dancing, and also traveled and collected glassware. Lillie enjoyed her neighbors and friends. She took great pride in caring for her family and her home. She loved flowers and gardening. Her creativity was evident in her flower arranging, decorating, sewing and other handiwork. Lillie was an excellent cook and made delicious Norwegian baked goods. She bowled and played bridge for many years, and cherished the long lasting friendships she made during these activities. Her study club and friends were especially important to her. Lillie is survived by her husband, Bill; two daughters, Carmen Woodmansee, Bismarck, and Jackie Bauer, Seattle; one grandson, Scott Woodmansee and his wife, Kelly, Bismarck; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Judy and Clois Hetletved, Robinson, and Gladys and Vernon Luybeck, Phoenix; one brother and sister-in-law, Edwin and Adelaide Johnson, Tuttle; one brother-in-law, Joe Larson, Sioux Falls, S.D.; many nieces and nephews, including Karen and Tom Weigel, and her husband Bill's extended family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Helen Keller, Alta Johnson and Palma Larson; and one brother-in-law, Russ Keller. Reuben Oscar Heupel
Reuben Oscar Heupel, 78, Bismarck, went to be with the Lord on Feb. 15, 2000 in Mesa, Ariz. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Jeff Tengesdal and G.G. Neuberger officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, with full military honors provided by VFW Post No. 1326. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, and for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Reuben was born on May 19, 1921 in Stowers, Adams County, the son of August and Marie (Giese) Heupel. He graduated from Lemmon High School and furthered his education at Dickinson State College before enteringthe U.S. Army in World War II. After his honorable discharge, he began working for Davis Chevrolet in Bismarck and then for Hedahl's Motor Supply for five years. In April 1949, he and his brother, Emil, purchased the Chevrolet garage in Elgin. A year later they acquired the Allis Chalmers and Oldsmobile franchises. In 1959, Reuben became the sole owner of Heupel Chevrolet-Oldsmobile, which he operated until May of 1984, when he retired. Prior to and after his retirement, he was very active in city and community affairs while in Elgin. He served as president as well as secretary for the Elgin City Business Club, Boy Scouts, Elgin Sportsman's Club, and Elgin American Legion Post No. 246. Reuben was a life member of DAV, AmVets, Elks Lodge BPOE 1199, and Eagles Club No. 2237. He was also chairman of the Jacobsen Memorial Hospital and Care Center Fund raising committee. He was a volunteer for the RSVP and N.D. Heritage Center. He was president of the N.D. Automobile Dealers Association from 1970-1971 and was also president of GRHS, Dakota Pioneer Chapter. Reuben was employed part time at Bank Center First and was a member of the Retired Businessmen's Club. He was also an active member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bismarck. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Louise (Kottre) Heupel; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Bonnie and Dennis Repnow, Mandan, Paula Heupel, Bismarck, and Kathy and Scott Allen, Salt Lake City, Utah; seven grandchildren, Daren, Dale, Dusty, Jeff, Tyson, Kaley and Zachary; and special nephew, Alan Laub. Shirley Flood
Shirley Flood, 62, Bismarck, died Feb. 1, 2000 in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck. There will be no visitation. Shirley was born on Aug. 5, 1937 in New England, the daughter of Matthew and Mary (Habiger) Schummer. She attended Dickinson State College and graduated in 1958 with a degree in education. She met Richard Flood while they were both teaching in Lusk, Wyo. and they were married on Aug. 5, 1959. They moved to Quincy, Ill. where Richard taught at Quincy College. They then moved to Thermopolis, Wyo. in 1964, where they raised their children and did substitute teaching. She worked at the Theromolis Library until 1985. They moved to Bismarck in 1986. Shirley was a librarian at the North Dakota State Library in Bismarck until she retired in 1997 due to her declining health. She particularly loved any time she was able to spend with her grandchildren. Shirley is survived by her mother, Mary Schummer, Mott; her daughters, Regina Hintz and her husband, Joe, Bismarck, and Sheila Osborne and her fiance, Pete Eade, Mandan; her son, Rick and his wife, Noreen, Cheyenne, Wyo.; a special family friend, Therese Ryder, her husband, Kurt and their children, Azi and Meg, all of San Antonio, Texas; seven grandchildren, Michelle, Nathan, Rebecca, Samantha, Kayla, Cameron and Erin; and a sister, Jean Bartel, and her husband, Bill, and their daughter, Diane, all of Reno, Nev. Billie G. Garner, 70, Bismarck, died Feb. 2, 2000 at her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at St. George's Episcopal Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Michael Horn and W. Kendall Johnson officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Beth El cemetery, Cheyenne, Wyo. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, both at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. A prayer vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Billie Shewbart was born April 25, 1929 in Red Bay, Ala., the daughter of Avie and Willy Belle (Morrow) Shewbart. She was raised and attended school in LaPlata, Md. She married Charles E. Garner on Dec. 27, 1947 in LaPlata. They resided in several places around the world as Mr. Garner served in the United State Air Force. They retired in 1966 in Cheyenne, Wyo. Mr. Garner died on April 29, 1992. In December of 1993, Billie moved to Bismarck. Billie is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Janell and Derek Kinzler, Rapid City, S.D., Cheryl and John Castleberry, Bismarck, and Karen and Bob Gose, Springfield, Va.; four grandchildren, Charles Gose and Josh, Jill and Jackie Castleberry; two brothers, Sonny Shewbart and George Shewbart; one sister, Dianne Shewbart; and one special niece and her husband, Jolene and Dan Stanton, Harpers Ferry, W.V. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Carlene. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Ruth Meiers Hospitality House or the Ronald McDonald House. Luella J. Haux
Luella J. Haux, 62, Bismarck, died Jan. 27, 2000, in Mesa, Ariz. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Robert Lynne officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Luella was born May 13, 1937, in New Rockford, to Jacob and Kathryn (Vollmer) Nathan. She graduated from Tuttle High School in 1955. On July 3, 1955, Luella married Roland Haux in Tuttle. She was a computer typesetter for 18 years for Fronteer Directory. She was a leader of Brownies and Cub Scouts, and taught Bible and Sunday school classes. Luella was involved with the Jaycees, North Dakota Amateur Basketball, and the North Dakota Republican Party. She was an avid bowler and loved to listen to country music. Lou enjoyed many years of camping and especially the years spent at their cabin at Brush Lake. Her generosity and caring for others will be remembered always by her good friends and family. Grandma Lu Lu lived for her grandchildren and loved and cherished her family very much. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Roland; her daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Joe Wolfe, Bismarck; her son, Todd Haux, Bismarck; her grandchildren, Shaun and Callie Jo Haux, Abby Jo and Joseph Wolfe, all of Bismarck; three sisters, Clara Lukkonen, Redwood Falls, Minn., Gladys Dyrness, Bremerton, Wash., and Helen Jones, Mesa, Ariz.; and six brothers, Harold Nathan, Minot, Jack Nathan, Mesa, John Nathan, Seattle, Bill Nathan, Minot, Richard Nathan, Bismarck, and Ben Nathan, Waverly, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Lydia Berg, Doris Hagge, Bertha Nathan, Adeline Rose Nathan and Rose Adeline Nathan. Memorials will be donated by the family to the Apollo Group Home in honor of her granddaughter, Callie Jo Haux.

Agnes M. Schmidt
Agnes M. Schmidt, 102, formerly of 311 3rd Avenue N.E., Mandan, died Jan. 28, 2000, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services were held on Feb. 2 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Jacob Schumacher officiating. Burial was in Mandan Union Cemetery. Agnes (Smith) Schmidt, was the last in a family of 12, of which there were 8 boys and 4 girls. Agnes was born on Sept. 6, 1897, to John C. and Ella (Bisenius) Smith in LeMont, Ill. She loved going to dances , which was where she met George E. Schmidt. They were married on Feb. 7, 1923, in Mandan and moved to Schmidt, where George managed the Riverside Gravel Pit. To this union five children were born, Kenneth, Eugene "Bud," and Bernice, Darlene and LaVerne. In 1934 they moved to Mandan and lived at 311 3rd Ave. N.E.George died on Feb. 7, 1974, on their 51st wedding anniversary. Agnes continued to live in their home until 1986, when she moved to the Lewis and Clark Apartments, living there until October 1997. She lived at Margaret Hoerner's until Dec. 18, when she was hospitalized with the flu. She entered the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center on Jan. 6 and died on January 28th due to flu complications. She was a great cook, baker, seamstress, gardener and enjoyed it all. She loved children, especially babies. Agnes was a member of the Catholic Daughters since 1923 and a member of the War Mothers. Survivors include: Bernice (Irving) Reed, Santa Monica, Calif.; Darlene (Lawrence) Graner, Mandan, and LaVerne (E.J.) Richard, Tyler, Texas; 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Elsie Smith, Mandan, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; two sons, Eugene in 1951, and Kenneth in 1984; one daughter-in-law, Mervyn Schmidt, and one son-in-law, Lyle Taylor; one great-grandson, Jason Silva; and eight brothers and three sisters.
