He is survived by his children, Julie Laducer, Belcourt, and Ramon Blue, Mandan; two grandchildren; seven sisters, Clara Rodewald, Mary Ann Wilkie, Elizabeth Beston, Helen Bercier, Evelyn Charette, Joyce Grant and Carol Patnaude, all of Belcourt; and three brothers, Patrick Blue, Minnesota, SamPatnaude, Belcourt and Melvin Patnaude, Wyoming. Edith O. Gradin
WASHBURN -- Edith O. Gradin, 77, Washburn, died Dec. 2, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital from injuries sustained in a fall. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Birka Lutheran Church, rural Washburn, with the Rev. Dan Mauer officiating and burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 8-11 a.m. today, at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Music will be provided by Dean Swanson, and pianist will be Sandy Swanson. Special music will be provided by Alicia Gradin-Boeckel and Zachary Lee and the Men's Quartet: The Masters Plan and the Grandchildren with "Jesus Loves Me." Honorary pallbearers will be all of Edith's grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers will be Joshua Lee, Zachary Lee, Traves Boeckel, Tim Johannes, Neal Peterson and Dwight Gradin. Edith Opal Johannes was born Oct. 22, 1923, at Underwood to Edward and Opal (Snyder) Johannes. She grew up at rural Underwood and at age 13, after both her parents had died, she was raised by her uncle and aunt, Hugo and Louise Johannes of rural Washburn. She graduated from Underwood HIgh School in 1941. She attended Minot State College and received her degree in elementary education. She then taught school at Ryder for one year and at Underwood for one year. She married Wallace Gradin on June 10, 1945, at the Birka Lutheran Church at rural Washburn. They lived and farmed 15 miles northwest of Washburn and moved into Washburn in 1986. Edith was an active member of the Birka Lutheran Church and of the Birka WELCA. She was a member of the Washburn Study Club and a past member of the Sakakawea Homemakers Club. She loved raising flowers, sewing, music, square dancing and was a great cook and baker. She loved her family and was very proud of her grandchildren, and was always a willing helper to all people. She is survived by her husband, Wallace; one daughter and son-in-law, Wallyn Kay and the Rev. Gordon Lee, Fargo; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Miles and Linda, rural Washburn, Mark, Fargo, Kyle and Karen, Hensler, and Dwight and Denise, rural Washburn; 10 grandchildren, Karisa, Joshua and Zachary Lee, Alicia Gradin-Boeckel, Angela Trevor, Cody, Kyla, Christopher and Samuel Gradin; one great-granddaughter, Gabriella Boeckel; one brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Dorothy Johannes, Renville, Minn. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Darwin and Otho Johannes. The family prefers memorials to Washburn Ambulance Service, Camp of the Cross and Birka Lutheran Sunday School.

He is survived by one son, Adolph John "Duffy" Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.; five daughters, Yvonne Pegg, Valley City, Barbara Rambeck, Burnsville, Minn., Patricia Ravnaas, Mandan, Judith Hartl, Moorhead, Minn., and Joan Hartl, Chandler, Ariz.; and eight grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Pauline; five sons, Don, Woodbury, Minn., Ken, Hudson, Wis., Bob, Dickinson, Jerry, Badger, Iowa, Allen, Dickinson; three daughters, Marge Binstock, Dickinson, Joan Jarboe, Denver, Colo., Amy Evoniuk, Newburgh, Ind.; 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren; one sister, Lena Heiser, Dickinson. Thomas George Himmelspach
Thomas George Himmelspach, 64, Center, died Dec. 2, 2000 due to an automobile accident west of Mandan. Services will be held at 10 a.m. CST at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Center, with the Revs. Roger Synek and Austin Vetter officiating. Burial will be in the Yucca Cemetery, by the family farmstead, rural Center. Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m today at Weigel Funeral Home, and will continue at 6 p.m. CST at the church. A parish vigil will be held at 7 p.m. CST today at the church. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the services at the church. Thomas George Himmelspach was born on Nov. 19, 1936 to Joseph and Monica (Immel) Himmelspach at the family. He was raised and educated in Oliver County. On June 12, 1956, he married Evangeline (Vangie) Freidig in Center. The couple resided on the family farm near Center for the past 44 years. He farmed the family farmstead up until the time of his death. He worked for Kist Livestock and Farmers Union both in Mandan, and worked as a labor carpenter and millwright before he worked for the Boilermaker Local 647 for the past 25 years. He retired at the age of 62. Tom was a member of the Bismarck Eagles Club. He was also a member of Knife River Pheasants Forever, where he was president for the past five years. Tom loved his music and he played in several bands throughout the years. He was a volunteer for many organizations throughout his lifetime. Tom and Vangie have enjoyed their summers at their lake home in Pick City for the past 20 years. They have many wonderful memories with special friends and family. Tom enjoyed fishing with his grandchildren and buddies. Since Tom retired they spent the last two winters in Yuma, Ariz. He loved making sausage, having Rocky Mountain Oysters and fish fries. Tom and Vangie belong to St. Martin's Catholic Church in Center. He is survived by his wife, Vangie of 44 years, Center; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Sue, Clearwater, Minn.; seven daughters and sons-in-law, Deb and Dave Berger, Center, Claudia and Kevin Bender, and Jolene Earl Erdman, all of Bismarck, Lorie and Kent Herbek, Monticello, Minn., Jackie and Dave Lemer, Vale, Ore., Judy and Gary Neuberger, Beulah and Sherri and Dirk Weng, Watertown, S.D.; his mother, Monica Himmelspach, Mandan; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank and Kathy, Cheyenne, Wyo., Clem and Leona, Woodinville, Wash., and Jim and Betty, Raymond, Minn.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Darlene and Ray Kautzman, Mandan, and Deloris and Ted Nordaby, Bothell, Wash.; 24 grandchildren, Kristy, Cody, Craig, Chad, Melony, Amber, Ashley, Alicen, Arika, Joey, Jordan, Michael, Eric, Adam, Travis, Alisha, David, Brandi, Shawn, Shane, Shawn, Samantha, Alexis and Kayla. Aubrey Russell
Aubrey Russell Jr., 96, Bismarck, died Dec. 4, 2000 in a Mandan care center. A private family service will be held on Wednesday, with the Rev. W. Kendall Johnson of St. George's Episcopal Church, Bismarck, officiating. Burial will be in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis. Aubrey Herbert Russell was born Oct. 8, 1904 in Minneapolis, the son of Dr. Aubrey H. Russell, Sr. and Lucy (Coleman) Russell. He was raised in Deer Lodge, Mont. and Anoka and Duluth, Minn. He graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1922 and began employment that year with the Soo Line Railroad in Minneapolis. He also served on the Soo Line Credit Union's auditing committee. Aubrey married Ellen Stromberg on June 10, 1947 in Mora, Minn. They raised in Minneapolis, Bloomington and Edina, Minn. In 1969, he retired from the Soo Line as an auditor. He and Ellen moved from Edina to Bismarck in 1985. Aubrey's lifelong interests were classical music, reading, and the family's pet cats and dogs. Aubrey is survived by his wife, Ellen, Bismarck; one son, Dr. Chuck Russell and his wife, Cindi, Bismarck; two daughters, Vicki Gilmore and her husband, Rod, Mandan, and Beth Acuna, Eden Prairie, Minn.; three grandsons, Chris and Andy Russell, Bismarck, and Eric Scherrer, Sacramento, Calif.; one sister, Ruth Russell Joseph, Minneapolis; and a niece, Janyece Clausen, Richfield, Minn. Gertrude Stuber
Gertrude Stuber, 92, died Dec. 3, 2000 in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, at Boelter Funeral Home, with the Rev. Clyde Leimberer officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. There will be no visitation. Gertrude was born Dec. 7, 1907 in Romania, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Bornt) Lavorski. In 1914, the family came to the United States, settling in the Dodge/Golden Valley area. Gertrude married Ben Stuber on Feb. 9, 1925 at Manning. Following their marriage, they farmed in the Dodge-Golden Valley area until 1935, when they moved into GoldenValley. They moved to Bismarck in 1957, where she worked for Rausch Furniture and for various people as a housekeeper, retiring in 1983. She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Lorraine Teti, Killdeer, and Berneice and Wilbert Frank, Lompoc, Calif.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Margie, San Diego, Calif., James and Charlotte, Lakewood, Colo., Allen and Jennifer, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, in 1968; one daughter, Lenora; and one son, Norman. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the donor's choice. Lydia Wolf
BEULAH -- Lydia Wolf, 93, Beulah, went to her heavenly home on Dec. 2, 2000 at the Hazen hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday, at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah, with the Rev. Kris Nyman officiating. Burial will be in Beulah City Cemetery. Lydia Helen Miller was born Sept. 26, 1907 near Hazen, to Samuel and Marie (Schuh) Miller. She grew up on her parents' farm north of Hazen, where she attended rural school. She married Herbert J. Wolf on Jan. 3, 1929 at Krem. They farmed north of Hazen from 1929-1934. In 1934, they moved to Ft. Peck, Mont., and in 1937, they moved to Beulah, where she has resided since. For many years she was a seamstress, and sewed many cheerleading outfits, formals and wedding gowns. Her passion was making quilts for her children and grandchildren. One of her grandchildren, when asked, "If stranded on a desert island, who would you want to be with you?" said "My grandma, Lydia, who can make anything out of nothing." In 1975, she was "Mercer County Mother of the Year" and "N.D. Merit Mother" in 1976. She enjoyed her yard, flowers and she dearly loved her Lord, family, and friends. She was active in the Zion Church for 63 years. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Herbert J. Wolf, Beulah; one son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Jan Wolf, Billings, Mont.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Geneis and Ruben Brunmeier, Washburn, Audrey and Herbert Sasse, Miles City, Mont., Carrie and Myron Hafner, Beulah; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Oscar and Marvel Miller, Hazen, and Walter and Eleanor Miller, Hazen; four sisters, Hulda Oster, Beulah, Elsie Urness, Beulah, Regina Knoell, Hazen, and Frieda and Cecil Berg, Stanton. Lydia is preceded in death by her parents; one son, Garvin; two brothers, Reinhold and Art Miller; and two sisters, Pauline Knoell and Martha Heth; and one great-grandchild, Breanna Nicole Gruba. Lydia dedicated the hymn, "Children of the Heavenly Father," for all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who have been left behind. (Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah)
