Henrietta Kerian
MINTO -- Henrietta Kerian, 87, Minto, died Dec. 29, 2000 at her home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Minto, with burial in the church cemetery. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia Herbel, Minot/Bismarck, Virginia Brazil, Minto, Winnie Zeamer, Richland, Wash., Dorette Kerian, Grand Forks, and Helen Hagemeister, Argusville; her sons, Ted, Minto, Larry, Fargo; 21 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Bernard Osowski, Minto. Fred J. Mautz
UNDERWOOD -- Fred J. Mautz, 85, Underwood, died Dec. 28, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Underwood, with the Rev. Arie Bertsch officiating. Burial will be in Underwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Monday at Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Fred John Mautz was born Dec. 5, 1915 at rural Coleharbor, to Edward and Helena (Eisenbeis) Mautz. He grew up on his parents' farm near Coleharbor where he attended rural school. As a young man, he farmed with his mother and brothers. He then served for one year in the Civilian Conservation Corps working at Mott and New England, and Little Rock, Ark. On Jan. 20, 1942, he married Clara Flath at rural Garrison. He worked at the Figenskau Coal Mine near Underwood and later began farming. He then served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the 91st Chemical Mortar Battalion in the European Theater. After his discharge in October of 1945, he returned to live and farm near Coleharbor. They farmed Mallard Island near Coleharbor and later farmed in the Underwood area. They retired in 1978 and moved into Underwood. Fred served his church and community in various capacities. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he was Financial Secretary for 33 years and also served as an elder. He was a past board member and president of the Underwood School Board. He was currently a board member of the Underwood Clinic. He enjoyed music and sports and was a life member of the Underwood VFW Post. He is survived by his wife, Clara; one son, Duane, Underwood; two daughters, Joyce Bruns, St. Charles, Mo., and Kay Jessen, Dickinson; one granddaughter, Christa Jessen, White Bear Lake, Minn.; two sisters, Lydia McKee, Nampa, Idaho, and Emma Mathias, Oshkosh, Wis.; one brother, Albert Mautz, Coleharbor; one sister-in-law, Theresa Mautz, Underwood; and many nieces and nephews. STRASBURG -- Ignatius Reinbold, 93, Strasburg, died Dec. 26, 2000 in the Strasburg care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg, with burial in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery, Strasburg. He is survived by his four daughters, Bernice A. Hayes, Vernon, Conn., Elizabeth Ohanneson, Nicasio, Calif., Pauline Cook, Oakland, Calif., and Delores Adamopoulas, Novata, Calif.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one brother, John, Strasburg; one sister, Eleanor Wagner, Mandan; four half-sisters, Katie Feist, Linton, Johanna Vetter and Theresa Reis, both of Bismarck, and Monica Senger, Aberdeen, S.D. Lyle W. Schon
MERCER -- Lyle W. Schon, 48, rural Mercer, died Dec. 28, 2000 in the Turtle Lake hospital of natural causes. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, with the Rev. Randy Emgarten officiating. Burial will be in Turtle Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday, at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Lyle William Schon was born Aug. 9, 1952 at Turtle Lake, to Bennie and Ruth (Blumhagen) Schon. He grew up on his parents' farm northeast of Turtle Lake, where he attended rural school. He graduated from Mercer High School in 1972 and then was employed at Rust Manufacturing at Mercer from 1973 to 1977. He married Marilyn Schatz on June 12, 1976 at the Trinity Lutheran Church at Turtle Lake. In the fall of 1977, they moved to a farm eight miles north of Mercer where they farmed and ranched. Lyle was an active member of his community and church. He was currently a board member of the Medicine Hill Township, and of the Turtle Lake Community Memorial Hospital. He was a past council member of the Trinity Lutheran Church at Turtle Lake. He loved to fish and enjoyed woodworking as a hobby. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; one daughter, Angie Schon, Moorhead, Minn.; one son, Eric Schon, rural Mercer; his parents, Bennie and Ruth Schon, Turtle Lake; one brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Ella Schon, rural Turtle Lake; and several nieces and nephews. Lawrence Smith
Lawrence Smith Jr., Bismarck, died Dec. 28, 2000 at a local hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Bismarck Community Church, Bismarck, with Mr. Ron Klein and Mr. Harlow Bales officiating. Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, and Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Larry was born in Washington D.C. where he attended D.C. public schools. He graduated from Bismarck State College with a degree in Associated Arts. He was a member of Bismarck Community Church, and was a frequent guest speaker at the N.D. Correctional Facility. Larry was an avid reader, loved music, and wrote poetry. He is survived by his wife, Beth LeRoy, Bismarck; his sisters, Camille Johnson and Janice Smith; his brothers, Daniel Smith and Jerome Smith; an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Shields; and nieces and nephews, all of Washington D.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Rosalyn Smith; and his sister, Betty Smith. Larry was greatly loved by his family and friends. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

O.V. Ellingson
O.V. "Duke" Ellingson, 81, 2724 Valleyview Ave., died Dec. 26, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Lisa Ahlness and Jeff Franko officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, rural Mandan. The casket will be closed, but for those who wish, visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. Monday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Duke was born Sept. 12, 1919 at Barrett, Minn., the son of Elling and Estella (Gran) Ellingson. He grew up and attended school in Barrett. In 1937, he joined the Army. On Nov. 30, 1940, he married Wilma Klaudt in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They lived in various places while he was in the service and in 1946, when he was discharged as a Master Sergeant, they moved to Bismarck. In 1948, they moved to Williston and lived there for 25 years. They returned to Bismarck in 1969 where they have lived since. Duke worked as an auditor for Farmer's Union Central Exchange, manager of Northwest Mutual Aid Telephone Company in Ray, City Assessor of Williston, and as Auditor for the Inspector General's Office for the Department of Agriculture. In 1969, he was appointed as Director of the Safety Responsibility Division of the North Dakota Highway Department and would later transfer to the Right of Way Division, where he would retire from in 1982. Following retirement, he worked for the North Dakota Humanities Council and he also worked as an independent real estate assessor. He did volunteer work at the Heritage Center, the old Governor's Mansion and Slope Model Railroad and Mandan Railroad Museums. Duke was named Bismarck's volunteer of the year. He also read newspapers, on Prairie Public Radio, for the blind. He was an active member of the Masons, the Shriners, VFW, American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans. Duke earned a Doctor of Divinity from Great Plains Institute of Theology. He taught at the Institute and served as a lay minister in Lutheran Churches in Western North Dakota. He is survived by three sons and one daughter-in-law, Lowell and Sara Ellingson, Richland, Wash., Mark Ellingson, Mandan, Doulgas Ellingson and his friend, Julie Schmidt, Bismarck; four grandchildren, Mark II, Piper, Jeffrey and Levi; two step-grandchildren, Michelle and Jason; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Janice Olson, Washburn. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma; one daughter, Robin; one brother, Norland; and one sister, Harriet. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)
Janet Aaser
Janet Aaser, 41, Mandan, died Nov. 29, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Paul D. Fiske officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, and 9 a.m.-noon Tuesday, both at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Janet was born Dec. 24, 1958, in Fargo, the daughter of James and Matilda (Klein) Schaeffer. She was raised and educated in Fargo, graduating from Fargo South High School in 1977. She married Richard Aaser, Oct. 14, 1978, in Fargo. They lived in West Fargo for one year and moved to Mandan in 1979. She worked at Dakota Alph, Medcenter One Care Center and Dan's Super Valu. Janet loved working on her computer. Her boys were her main interest and she was "Mom" to all the kids in the neighborhood. She was a member of First Lutheran Church. She is survived by her husband, Richard; two sons, Michael and David, both of Mandan; one sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Jerry Mehlisch, Fargo; and her mother-in-law, Katherine Holweger, Moorhead, Minn. She was preceded in death by her grandparents; her parents; and her brother-in-law, Roger Aaser.
Linda Dawson
DAZEY -- Linda Dawson, 55, Dazey, died Dec. 2, 2000 at her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Dazey, with burial in Dazey Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Ron; one son, Shawn, Casselton; one daughter, Ronda Muncy, Dazey; her mother, Myrtle Jorissen, Dazey; two sisters, Esther Jacobson, Salem, Ore., and Judy Jorissen, Dazey; four brothers, Gary, Richard, and Todd Jorissen, all of Dazey, and Michael Jorissen, Fargo; and four grandchildren. Walter E. Eckelberg
HALLIDAY -- Walter E. Eckelberg, 76, Halliday, died Dec. 2, 2000 in the Dickinson hospital. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MST Tuesday, at Normanna Lutheran Church, Dunn Center, with the Rev. Aanen Gjovik officiating. Walter was born Oct. 10, 1924 to Edward Henry and Elizabeth "Ella" Buehner Eckelberg at the family farm and ranch north of Werner, where he lived all his life. On June 24, 1951, he married Rosemary McConnell at Normanna Lutheran Church. Walter farmed and ranched all his life and was active in his community and church. He loved tending the land and animals as well as tinkering with machinery. He enjoyed auction sales, antiques, dancing, collecting threshing machines and flying with his grandson. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary; five children, Gayle (Lyle) Vihon, Tullahoma, Tenn., Loralyn (Roy) Hegland, Bismarck, Neil (Bonnie) Eckelberg, Killdeer, Mark (Penny) Eckelberg, West Fargo; and Sandra Eckelberg, Jamestown; eight grandchildren, Jessica and Luke Vihon, Travis, Tessa and Sarah Eckelberg, and Jamie Hegland, and Ryan and Matt Eckelberg; and one brother, Henry (Betty) Eckelberg, Halliday. Edith O. Gradin
WASHBURN -- Edith O. Gradin, 77, Washburn, died Dec. 2, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital from injuries sustained in a fall. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Birka Lutheran Church, rural Washburn, with the Rev. Dan Mauer officiating and burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, and 8-11 a.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Music will be provided by Dean Swanson, and pianist will be Sandy Swanson. Special music will be provided by Alicia Gradin-Boeckel and Zachary Lee and the Men's Quartet: The Masters Plan and the Grandchildren with "Jesus Loves Me." Honorary pallbearers will be all of Edith's grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers will be Joshua Lee, Zachary Lee, Traves Boeckel, Tim Johannes, Neal Peterson and Dwight Gradin. Edith Opal Johannes was born Oct. 22, 1923 at Underwood to Edward and Opal (Snyder) Johannes. She grew up at rural Underwood and at age 13, after both her parents had died, she was raised by her Uncle and Aunt; Hugo and Louise Johannes of rural Washburn. She graduated from Underwood HIgh School in 1941. She attended Minot State College and received her degree in elementary education. She then taught school at Ryder, for one year and at Underwood for one year. She married Wallace Gradin on June 10, 1945 at the Birka Lutheran Church at rural Washburn. They lived and farmed 15 miles northwest of Washburn and moved into Washburn in 1986. Edith was an active member of the Birka Lutheran Church and of the Birka WELCA. She was a member of the Washburn Study Club and a past member of the Sakakawea Homemakers Club. She loved raising flowers, sewing, music, square dancing and was a great cook and baker. She loved her family and was very proud of her grandchildren, and was always a willing helper to all people. She is survived by her husband, Wallace; one daughter and son-in-law, Wallyn Kay and the Rev. Gordon Lee, Fargo; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Miles and Linda, rural Washburn, Mark, Fargo, Kyle and Karen, Hensler, and Dwight and Denise, rural Washburn; 10 grandchildren, Karisa, Joshua and Zachary Lee, Alicia Gradin-Boeckel, Angela Trevor, Cody, Kyla, Christopher and Samuel Gradin; one great-granddaughter, Gabriella Boeckel; one brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Dorothy Johannes, Renville, Minn. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Darwin and Otho Johannes. The family prefers memorials to Washburn Ambulance Service, Camp of the Cross and Birka Lutheran Sunday School. Roy F. Isaksen
Roy F. Isaksen, 86, Mandan, died Dec. 2, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Mandan, with the Rev. Richard Hagestuen officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery, with military rites provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 707 and American Legion Post 40. Visitation will be held at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home from 3-9 p.m. Tuesday and will continue on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Roy F. was born on Nov. 23, 1914 in Everett, Wash., the son of Olaf and Hilder (Sandvold) Isaksen. He was raised and educated in Everett and graduated from Everett High School in 1933. He served in the CCC for 13 months. In 1938, he enlisted in the Army where he served in the Third Infantry Division and the Third Signal Company. On Dec. 12, 1941, he re-enlisted in the Army Signal Corps and served in Paphan and New Guinea in the southwest Pacific Theatre for two years. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Presidential Unit Citation with one oak leaf cluster to Unit Citation and four Overseas Service Bars. After the war, he was employed by the Civil Aeronautics Administration which later become the F.A.A. He married Gladys A. Fairaizl on June 29, 1947 in Mandan. They lived in Annette, Alaska; San Aruno, Calif. and Cedar City, Utah. In 1971, after his retirement for the Federal Aviation Administration, where he had been employed as an air traffic control specialist, they moved to Mandan. Roy was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion in Mandan. He is survived by his wife, Gladys; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Isaksen, Everett, and Bette DeYoung, Olympia, Wash.; his nieces, Donna Capps, Seattle, Wash., Kathy DeYoung, Lacy, Wash., Sharon Isaksen, Seattle, Karen Vaughn, Bremerton, Wash., and his nephews, Roy G. Isaksen, Marysville, Wash., and Richard Isaksen, Seattle. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Harold, Olaf and Glen. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)
Mary Ellen Meuer
Mary Ellen Meuer, 66, Bismarck, died Dec. 1, 2000 of complications due to a stroke in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Bismarck Evangelical Church, with the Rev. John Luhmann officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Mary Ellen Meuer was born on April 30, 1934 in Madison, Wis. to Roy and Elizabeth (Tipple) Cross. She graduated from Madison High School in 1951, and worked as a x-ray technician at Madison General Hospital. She married Joseph Meuer in September 1952. Joseph died in 1992. Mary Ellen, was owner of Country House Deli for 26 years. She was a talented cook who developed most of the recipes used at the Country House Deli. She loved politics and all kinds of sports, especially football and basketball, she loved quilting and dogs, especially her two dobermans Josie and Max. She raised dachshunds and dobermans. Mary Ellen is survived by her sons, Michael J. Meuer, Chicago, Ill., and Craig C. Meuer, Minneapolis; her daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Bruce Kuhnley, Bismarck; her sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Robert Tourdot, and stepfather, Carl Tiedeman. She is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; her mother, Elizabeth Tiedeman and her father, Roy Cross. (Bismarck Funeral Home)
