Gerald "Jerry" Arnold Simon
JUDSON -- Gerald "Jerry" Arnold Simon, 68, Judson, died Feb. 13, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Wednesday, at St. Pius Catholic Church, New Salem, with the Rev. David Zimmer officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. today, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and 4-9 p.m. MST at St. Pius Catholic Church, New Salem, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to the time of the service at St. Pius Catholic Church. Jerry was born on March 5, 1931 in Glen Ullin, the son of Joseph LeRoy and Hubertina Anna (Braun) Simon. In 1942, his family moved to Gallion, Ohio, for five years and then moved northeast of Bismarck and farmed until his marriage to Betty Anne Bidwell on June 30, 1953 in Bismarck. They then moved to Bismarck where they lived for nine years and on March 16, 1963, they moved south of Judson where he farmed and was a construction foreman for Igoe Construction Company for 22 years. He retired from Igoe Construction Company in 1983 but continued to farm until 1990. Jerry loved dancing, old time music and country western music, playing cards, watching football, traveling, and playing softball with kids. He was hard working and his value of doing his best was passed on to his children. He was a good friend to many people and he didn't know how to say no when others needed his help. Jerry was a member of St. Pius Catholic Church in New Salem. He is survived by his wife, Betty, Judson; six daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and John Kraft, Carol and Wayne Hochhalter, Kathleen and Ed Getz, all of Bismarck, Susan and Don Lipp, Mandan, Bonnie and Michael Paine, Waseca, Minn., and Melissa and Kevin Rymer, Casper, Wyo.; three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Margaret Simon, Cottage Grove, Minn., Joel and Shelly Simon, New Salem, and Quentin and Gail Simon, Carrington; eight grandsons, Curt and Brent Kraft, Josh Lipp, Eric Rymer, Brandon Simon, Tim Simon, Quentin Simon and Samantha and Jessica Paine, Jade Rymer, Stefanie Simon, Michelle Simon, and Amanda Simon; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Bernetta and Louis Metz, Bismarck, and Alberta Feser, Glen Ullin; and many special friends. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Theodore Staiger
FARGO -- Theodore Staiger, 89, Fargo, died Feb. 13, 2000 in a Fargo nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. MST Friday, at Spangelo Funeral Home, Hebron, with the Rev. Brian Wangler officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Richardton, with full military rites provided by Richardton American Legion. Visitation begins two hours prior to the funeral service at the church. Theodore was born on June 6, 1910 in rural Antelope, the son of Gottlieb and Rosina (Diede) Staiger. He was raised and educated in rural Antelope. He married Agnes Schatz on Oct. 12, 1938 at Helena, Mont. He entered the US Army on Feb. 28, 1943 and served until his discharge on Dec. 1, 1945. Following his discharge, they purchased the John Wiege farm which they operated until 1984, when they moved into Richardton. In 1998, they moved to Moorhead, Minn. and resided with their daughter. In late January, he entered the Rosewood Nursing Home, where he has resided since. He is survived by his wife, Agnes; one son, David and Bonnie, Moorhead; one daughter, Cindy and Bill Funk, Moorhead; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and two sisters, Agnes Karch, Hebron, and Harriet Magstadt, Missoula, Mont. Carroll Swenson
KEENE -- Carroll Swenson, 83, Keene, died Feb. 11, 2000. Services were held on Feb. 14 at Keene First Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Good Hope Cemetery, Keene. He is survived by his wife, Betty; one son, the Rev. Timothy J. Swenson, Halliday; one daughter, Paulette Sieg, New Town; one brother, Winton Swenson, Minot; two sisters, Thelma Anderson and Ann Washburn, both of Watford City; and four grandchildren. Donald Vick
WATFORD CITY -- Donald Vick, 76, Watford City, died Feb. 11, 2000 in a Fargo hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at First Lutheran Church, Watford City. Burial will be in Garden Valley Cemetery. He is survived by four brothers, Kenneth, Henderson, Nev., Alan, Rochester, Minn., David, Aberdeen, S.D., and James, Billings, Mont.; three sisters, Elizabeth Thompson, Williston, Marion Fitzroy, Dalton, Mass., and Margaret Johnson, Portland, Ore. Lowell Young
Lowell Young, 95, Culbertson, Mont., died Feb. 12, 2000 in a Culbertson nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Wednesday, at Big Sky Church, Froid, Mont. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Culbertson. He is survived by one sister, Hazel Knudsen, McCabe; five brothers, Herbert, Verona, Wis., Vernon and Walter, both of Culbertson, Roy, Williston, and Glenn, Absarokee, Mont. William L. Ereth
William L. "Bill" Ereth, 67, 700 15th St. NW, Mandan, died May 29, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan. Further arrangements are pending with Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan.

HAZELTON -- Simon H. Gimbel, 79, Hazelton, died May 30, 2000 at his home. Arrangements are pending with Myers Funeral Home, Linton.

Thelma Kathleen Leimberer
Thelma Kathleen Leimberer, 87, died May 30, 2000 in a local hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at Baptist Home Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Don Burnett officiating. Burial will be in Winslow Cemetery, Belle Plaine, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Baptist Home Chapel, Bismarck. Thelma Walter was born on Jan. 23, 1913 near Deer River, Iowa, to Edward and Mary (Rinehart) Walter. She graduated from Victor Public School in Victor, Iowa in 1931. Thelma attended Iowa State Teachers College and taught for eight years in rural schools. On May 19, 1940, Thelma married Milo Leimberer. They lived near Hartwick, Iowa. She was a member of Hartwick Bible Church, and was a Sunday School teacher, 4-H leader, and a member of the Historical Society, Powehiek Co. Genealogy Group, and Winslow Cemetery Association. Thelma worked at the Amana Refrigeration plant for several years. Milo died on Dec. 4, 1974, at Hartwick, Iowa and in October of 1997, Thelma moved to Bismarck. Thelma is survived by her daughter, Mary Sather, Santa Fe, N.M.; her son and daughter-in-law, Clyde and Earlyne Leimberer, Bismarck; her sister, Dorothy Tuttle, Des Moines, Iowa; her sister-in-law, Mildred Leimberer, Waterloo, Iowa; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Milo; her brother, Ralph Walter; and her sister, Grace Ketterling. Thelma and the family prefer memorials in lieu of flowers. Services are being arranged in Hartwick, Iowa also. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Delmar Martin
MCVILLE -- Delmar Martin, 83, McVille, and formerly of Tolna, died May 25, 2000 in a McVille care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tolna, with burial in Tolna Cemetery. He is survived by his children, Larol Hursman, Grand Forks, Trish Young, Brocket, and Ray Martin, Hayward, Calif.; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. (Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota)

Barbara Ann McAlpin
Barbara Ann McAlpin, 79, former Bismarck resident, died May 29, 2000 at Danville, Ill. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Rev. Larry Jahnke officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Friday, and one hour prior to the service at Perry Funeral Home. Barbara was born May 31, 1920 in Hibbing, Minn., to Paul and Pearl (Carr) Henry. She was raised and educated in Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High School. She also graduated from Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority. She met her husband of 57 years, Raymond McAlpin during her time at Coe College. While living in Bismarck, she worked at the State Water Commission, Garrison Diversion Project, Bismarck Chamber of Commerce, and was an active member of PEO. She and her husband moved to Ventura, Calif. in 1966, where she served as county treasurer for the Ventura County Republican Women, served as an officer of the Southern District California Republican Women and was an alternate delegate to the Republican National Convention in the 1980's. Barbara and her husband traveled extensively and lived in their Lake Tahoe cabin for many summers. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Margie, Novato, Calif., Brian and Renee, Champaign, Ill.; grandchildren, Craig McAlpin and his wife, Natalie; and Megan McAlpin from California; Sara Lasiter and her husband, Nathan, from Oklahoma; Stephen McAlpin and Michelle McAlpin from Illinois and great-grandson, Paul Lasiter. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond; and grandson, Paul McAlpin. Memorials in Mrs. McAlpin's name can be made to the American Heart Association. Reinhold Stadler
TURTLE LAKE -- Reinhold Stadler, 86, Turtle Lake, died May 30, 2000 in the Turtle Lake hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake. Further arrangements are pending with Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake.

Regina Swindler
MOTT -- Regina Swindler, 87, Mott, died May 29, 2000 in a Mott care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Friday, at Mott Evangelical Community Church. Burial will be in Sunnyslope Cemetery, Mott. She is survived by two sons, Marion Swindler and Ronald Swindler, both of Mott; three daughters, Bonnie Bieber, Janice Gifford, both of Mott, and Shirley Swindler, Anchorage, Alaska; 12 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Keith Anderson
VALLEY CITY -- Keith Anderson, 42, Valley City, died Dec. 6, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Epworth United Methodist Church, Valley City, with burial in Sheldon, N.D. in the spring. He is survived by two sons, Jebidiah and Shane Anderson, both at home; a daughter, Rebecca Anderson, Jamestown; a stepson, Levi Lockwood, Mandan; four brothers, Patrick Morrison, West Fargo, Michael Morrison, Moorhead, Minn., Doug Lommen, Bismarck, and Steve Anderson, Lisbon; and four sisters, Judy Ondicho, Richfield, Minn., Tammy Erickson, Mandan, Bonnie Cole, Lisbon, and Mona Szklarski, Minto. Bernard William Becker
Bernard William Becker, 62, Bismarck, died Dec. 7, 2000 from a sudden heart attack while hunting deer near Bentley. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, with the Rev. Thomas Kramer officiating. A spring burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at Eastgate Funeral Service. Bernie was born Sept. 17, 1938 in Bismarck, the son of Joe and Marie (Hamkens) Becker. He graduated from St. Mary's High School. He married Betty Horner in August of 1962, and they had three children. Bernie confounded Becker and Huber Electric in 1964, which became Becker Electric in 1983. He continued to work there with his wife until his death. Bernie was a loyal member of the Cathedral Church Choir for about 20 years. He volunteered with the Salvation Army and had served as a member of the board of directors. He was active in the apprencticeship program for electricians. In 1971, he founded the Bismarck Gun Club to pursue his life-long love of skeet shooting. He operated and managed the gun club for 25 years. He also built and repaired guns for his own collection, a skill he learned from a gunsmith he worked for as a teenager. He was also an avid collector of machine tools as well as an amateur machinist. Bernie loved spending time with his four grandchildren. He will be missed for his kindness, concise wit, and enduring integrity. He is survived by his wife, Betty; one daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Tom Knocke, Cannon Falls, Minn.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Jean Becker, Denver, Colo., and John and Maggie Becker, Akron, Ohio; four grandchildren; three brothers, John, Dick and Joe; and two sisters, Donna Short and Rita Daffinrud. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Rosina Ward and Theresa Godfrey; four brothers, Louie, Nick, Paul and Norbert; and one grandchild. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)

Mary "Irene" Butler, 84, Deerwood, Minn., and formerly of Bismarck, died Dec. 6, 2000 at her home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, at Crosby Ironton Presbyterian Church, Crosby, Minn. She is survived by her daughters, Betsy Watson, Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Barbara Butler, Stamford, Conn.; her sons, George Butler, Guam, and Bruce Butler, Plymouth, Minn.; seven grandchildren; her sisters, Sally Ewen, Pleasantville, N.Y., and Margaret Wasstrom, Brooklyn, Conn. Eva Guthmiller Hartinger, 89, Mandan Care Center, died Dec. 9, 2000 at the care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending with Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck.

Mathias Lefor
DICKINSON -- Mathias "Matt" Lefor, 97, Dickinson, died Dec. 9, 2000 in a Dickinson care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Tuesday, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson. Further arrangements are pending with Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.

Edward L. Moser
NAPOLEON -- Edward L. Moser, 73, Napoleon, died Dec. 8, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Adeline; five sons, Steve and David, both of Napoleon, Mike and Brian, both of Lincoln, and Gary, Omaha, Neb.; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Agnes Holmes, Napoleon, Florence Wallace, Selma, Ala., and Cecelia Riddle, Elk Grove, Calif. Otto Pfaff
DENHOFF -- Otto Pfaff, 86, Denhoff, died Dec. 7, 2000 in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at United Community Baptist Church, Anamoose. Burial will held at Lincoln Valley Baptist Cemetery, rural Denhoff. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. today at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey. Otto was born Aug. 13, 1914 on the family farm near Lincoln Valley. He was the son of John and Christine (Kausz) Pfaff. He attended the Schiller District rural school near Lincoln Valley. As a young man he farmed with his father and continued to farm until his retirement in 1994, at the age of 80. Otto married Helen Seibel on May 20, 1944 in Anamoose. Otto was active in various organizations during his life. He served as treasurer of the Schiller School District. He was the clerk of the Schiller District election board for many years and also served as its judge. He was a 4-H leader, president of the Anamoose PTA for a year. Otto was a member at the Lincoln Valley Baptist Church where he was a Sunday school superintendent and a deacon for many years until joining the United Community Baptist Church of Anamoose, where he served as an adult Sunday school teacher and as a deacon. Otto had several interests and hobbies. He enjoyed overhauling his tractors and combines, ice skating, and even taught some of his grandchildren how to skate. Otto enjoyed playing softball as a young man. At the young age of 81, at a church picnic he was still diving for ground balls. Perhaps one of his biggest accomplishments was learning how to play the piano by ear. He entertained all his children and grandchildren with old favorites like "Amazing Grace" and "Red Wing." Otto used this talent to entertain the residents and staff at the Mandan Care Center. Otto is survived by his wife, Helen; three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Elaine, Bismarck, Bryan and Linda, Chino Hills, Calif., and Marlow and Nancy, Center; his daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Duncan Osborne, Los Osas, Calif.; his grandchildren, John and his wife, Julie Pfaff, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Melissa Schmidt, Bismarck, Shawn and Jason Pfaff, Chino Hills, Dakota and Cheyenne Osborne, Los Osas, and Jarvis and Katie Pfaff, Center; and his great-grandson, Jake Pfaff, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Otto was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Herbert and Reinhold; three sisters, Edna Frank, Dena Wagner, Freda Neumiller; and three sisters and three brothers during early childhood. Otto will be greatly missed and remembered for his willingness to always help others and his always ready smile and his love for his family and fellow mankind. We love you Papa!
