Mary Krueger
Mary Krueger, 92, died May 18, 2000, of natural causes in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Christ the King Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be in Dawson Memorial Cemetery, Glendive, Mont. Visitation will be from 8-9 p.m. Sunday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil will begin at 8 p.m. Sunday. Mary was born March 23, 1908, in Baltimore, Md., to Alois and Marie (Wachtler) Kovarik. She lived in Baltimore until 1910, when she moved with her parents to Hebron where she attended grade and high school. After graduation in 1928, she attended a business college in Bismarck, completing a stenographic curriculum. The next year she returned to Hebron, taking a secretarial position for a local law firm. Mary was united in marriage to William "Bill" Krueger on July 11, 1931, at St. Anne Catholic Church, Hebron. They lived in several communities before moving to Glendive, Mont., in 1956. While in Glendive, she worked as a secretary/receptionist, and as an aide in the Glendive Nursing Home. She was especially proud to have served for 20 years as a "foster grandmother" at the Eastmont Human Services Center in Glendive. In 1991 she moved to Liberty Heights in Mandan, where she lived before becoming a resident of Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in May 1997. Mary was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Mandan, and Sacred Heart Church in Glendive, where she sang in the church choirs for many years. She was also a longtime member of the Glendive Women of the Moose, serving in various offices. Mary was a gentle and kind person who loved children and animals. She was especially talented at crocheting, knitting and tatting, and loved to sing and paint. Her favorite saying was "Life is like a picture, so paint it well." Her parents; husband; one brother; two sisters and a grandson preceded her in death. Surviving her are a daughter, RoseMary Jacobchick and her husband, Rick; a son, Norm and his wife, Gen, all of Mandan; a son, Ronald and his wife, Gerry, Spokane, Wash.; a daughter, Karin Smith and her husband Greg, Murray, Utah; her sister, Kathryn Lewis and her husband, George, Mandan; a sister, Alice Slattum, Goffstown, N.H.; a sister-in-law, Margaret Kovarik, Hebron; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Chester Perry
Chester Perry, 86, 1115 N. First St., died May 19, 2000, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck. Further arrangements are pending at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan.

GARRISON -- Clara Sayler, 82, Garrison, died May 17, 2000, in a Scobey, Mont. nursing home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Church of Christ, Garrison, with burial in Garrison Cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Wayne, Scobey, and Kenneth, Garrison; five sisters, Katherine Sayler, Vancouver, Wash., Frieda McElwain, Max, Emilia Drayton, San Bruno, Calif., Ella O'Shea, Minot, and Cleone Westby, Fresno, Calif.; three brothers, Arthur Engel and Leslie Engel, both of Garrison, and William Engel, St. George, W.V.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. DICKINSON -- Emma Schoch, 88, Dickinson, died May 17, 2000, in a Dickinson care center. A memorial services for Elizabeth (Pierce) Thornley, 62, Connecticut, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Rosa Young Park, Bismarck. She died Jan. 20, 2000, in Connecticut.
Frank L. Berger
Frank L. Berger, 47, Bozeman, Mont., died April 28, 2000, from injuries sustained from a car accident. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery with a full committal service by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 707. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m., followed by a parish vigil at 7:30. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Frank L. Berger, the son of Marcus and Margaret (Kary) Berger was born Dec. 31, 1952 in Mandan. He was raised and educated in Mandan. He lived in California for several years before moving to Bozeman, where he was employed as a truck driver. He served in the U.S. Marines. In 1974, he married Muril Lurz in Mandan. Frank had an outgoing and friendly manner. He was generous with his time and had a positive and upbeat attitude. He took great pride in his children, especially his grandson and the Berger family name was very important to him. He was known as the dedicated truck driver. He strived for perfection and was known as the best in his trade. Amongst his interests was his love to play baseball. He was a natural, impressing Jason by hitting every ball in the fastest batting cage. Though he went through some difficult times, he was most focused on reaching his goals during the past year. He is survived by his former spouse, Muril Berger, Lodi, Calif.; one son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Jamie Berger, Davis, Calif., one daughter, Jenney Berger, Lodi; one grandson, Jacob Berger; four brothers, Ray, Lodi, Dennis, Missoula, Mont., Jim, Bozeman, and Monte, Mandan; three sisters, Lorraine Frank, Laurel, Mont., and Marian Washburn and Sally Schultz, both of Mandan; and a special friend, the Rev. Ben Dove. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Lucas, Bernie and Henry; and four sisters, Gladys, Donna, Judy and Margie.

DICKINSON -- Harold "Hoxie" Freed, 90, Dickinson, died Dec. 15, 2000, in a Dickinson care center. He is survived by one son, Boyd, Sheridan, Wyo.; one daughter, Joan Hoffman, Muskegon, Mich.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Ida Purcell, Yakima, Wash.; and four brothers, Gus, Goff, Kan., Clarence, Phoenix, John, Oceanside, Calif., and Frank, Jacksonville, Texas. Florence Louise L. Gross
Florence Louise L. Gross, 92, Bismarck, died Dec. 16, 2000. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Cornerstone Community Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Keith Ritchie officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Florence was born Aug. 4, 1908, in Underwood, the daughter of Chris and Clara (Busch) Gross. She grew up and attended school in Underwood, graduating in 1926. She attended Minot College and then taught in rural schools, also in the grade schools in Benedict and Wishek. In 1941, she took a leave of absence from teaching and went to California to work for Douglas Aircraft. The following year she returned to North Dakota and Minot University to receive her bachelor of arts degree. While there, she was elected to be included in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, and also did graduate work at the University of Minnesota. In 1946, Florence moved to Bismarck where she taught first grade at Richholt School for 25 years, retiring in 1972. After affirming her faith as a teenager, Florence taught Sunday school and held various offices in the church for many years. She had a special interest in missions, and she, along with her sister, Dorothy, and brother, David, hosted many missionaries and others in their "Prophets' Chamber" guest room. She was a member of Wesleyan Cornerstone Church in Bismarck, Mandan Bismarck Retired Teachers, Garden Club, and for many years was an active member of W.C.T.U. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Thompson, Bismarck, and many cousins and special friends. Florence was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, David.

She is survived by three daughters, Laurie Harrington, Beaverton, Ore., Kim Callaway and Teri Dotson, both of Jasper; one stepson, Dallas Anderson, Clarksville, Ark.; three stepdaughters, Iolani Tedesso, Temple, Ariz., Chris Dunn, Sweat, Idaho, and Bonnie Kinnard, Arkadelphia, Ark.; one brother, Jim Fisher, Mandan; one sister, Delores Booke, Dickinson; four grandchildren; and 10 step-grandchildren. He is survived by three sons, Benny, Eden Prairie, Minn., Gary, Vernon, Wis., and Ken, Middleton, Wis.; one daughter, Jane Debing, West Fargo; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Lipp, Strasburg. Larry D. Heilman
Larry D. Heilman, 56, 3500 93rd St. S.E., Bismarck, died Dec. 15, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Word of Faith Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Dom Vetter officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Tuesday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Larry was born Oct. 27, 1944, at Rugby, to Sebastian and Lena (Haberlack) Heilman. He was raised and educated in rural Balta. As a young man he took up welding and worked as an iron worker for many years until becoming disabled in 1985. He married Leona Volk on Feb. 12, 1966, at Karlsruhe. Larry loved camping, hunting and fishing, and was a member of Ironworkers Local 793. He is survived by his wife, Leona; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Lora and Clarence Raught, Bismarck, Jodi and Kelly Unger, Mandan, and Tanya Heilman, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Amy Heilman, Lincoln; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Maryann Haman, Carrington, Irene Keller, Washington, D.C., and Regina and Dennis Goetz, Esmond; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Ed and Francis Heilman, Balta, and LeRoy Heilman, Wilton; six grandchildren, Travis Heilman, Randy and Ryan Holden, Chantel and Tyler Unger and Abby Heilman. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Terry; one sister, Alvina; and one brother, Joe.

Katherine Neumiller
Katherine Neumiller, 100, Bismarck, died Dec. 16, 2000, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Kermit Culver officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Katherine "Katie" Klein was born in Schaumbale, Russia, on March 20, 1900, the daughter of Daniel and Charlotte (Schuckmeier) Klein. In 1911, Katie and her family immigrated to the United States and settled in the Mercer area. On March 23, 1919, she married Christ Neumiller at Mercer. They settled on the family homestead south of Mercer. In 1947 they moved to Bismarck. Katie was employed at Master Cleaners and as a cook at the Baptist Home. She loved to bake and always had many goodies for her children, grandchildren and many friends when they would stop to visit. Katie is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Ted and Alice Neumiller, Turtle Lake, and Harold and Marlys Neumiller, Bismarck; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Ruth and Ted Kurie, Mercer, Ruby Schlafman, Stanton, and Martha and Reuben Schlafman, Jamestown; one sister, Rose Stacy, Bismarck; three half-brothers, Herman Klein, Louie Klein and Ted Klein, all of Bismarck; three half-sisters, Bertha Peacher, Hilda Mraz and Lena Bitterman, all of Oregon; 31 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Christ; two sons; two daughters; one son-in-law; two daughters-in-law; four sisters; two half-brothers; two granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.
