Mary White
STEELE -- Mary White, 100, Steele, died Dec. 9, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Steele, with the Rev. Paul Tjostem officiating. Spring burial will be in Dawson Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday at Eastgate Steele Chapel. Mary Eastburn was born Aug. 31, 1900 in Lehaska, Pa., the daughter of Timothy Taylor and Mattie Eastburn. In 1905, with her parents and younger sister, Abigail, she moved to Dawson. Mary married Frederick Raymond "Bud" White Sr. on Aug. 21, 1920 at Fargo. Bud and Mary farmed in Buckeye Township during the difficult depression and dust bowl years. While the times were stressful, the family found true friendship and rewarding days with their neighbors and friends. The family moved into Dawson in 1937. Mary assisted her parents with duties in their operation of the Sibley Hotel; worked on the staff of the Slade Hunting Lodge; and in 1963, she retired after more than 20 years with Montana Dakota Utilities in its Steele office. Her husband, Frederick died in 1977, and she has resided in Steele since 1978. She was an active member of the Dawson Congregational Church, was church organist for over 50 years, and was a member of Eastern Star, VFW, Legion Auxiliaries, and Dawson Senior Citizens. Mary is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Carolyn Waddell, Bowling Green, Ky., Martha "Mert" Thorsness, Steele, Janrose and Lowell Jasper, Robinson, and Richard Neustel, Dawson; two sons and three daughters-in-law, Timothy and Frances White, Steele, Fred Jr. and Susie White, Steele, and Marlys White, Steele; 30 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Sharlow Heustel; two sons, E.R. "Buck" White and Joseph G. White; one great-granddaughter; and one sister. STRASBURG -- Joseph Wolf, 78, Strasburg, formerly of Zeeland, died May 8, 2000 in the Strasburg care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, Zeeland. Carl Bader
HAZEN -- Carl "Charlie" Bader, 88, Hazen, formerly of Underwood, died May 9, 2000, in the Hazen hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, Underwood, with the Rev. Howard Anderson officiating. Darlene Becker will serve as organist and Ken and Nicole McAbee will perform a duet. Burial will be in Underwood Cemetery. Casketbearers will be J.W. Grueneich, Codi Grueneich, Jason Bader, Brad Grueneich, Cindy Tepp, Dan Peterson and Dave Peterson. Honorary casketbearers will be Laura Olson, Michelle King, Janelle Bader and Amie Ziegel. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, Underwood, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Carl Bader was born July 3, 1911, at rural Garrison, to Jacob and Katherina (Wagner) Bader. He grew up on a farm 12 miles east of Garrison, and attended rural school. He married Eldora Jesser, June 9, 1940, at her parents' home east of Underwood. In 1946, the couple moved to Underwood where Carl owned and operated a Texaco service station for a number of years. He was then employed by Peter Kiewit and Co. during the construction of the Garrison Dam. Following the dam's completion, he went to work for the City of Underwood. He worked full-time for the city for 25 years until semi-retiring in 1979. He continued to work part-time for the City of Underwood until 1989. He enjoyed golfing during his retirement years in Underwood. The couple moved to Hazen in October 1997. Carl was a member of First Baptist Church of Underwood where he served as a deacon and trustee. He drove school bus for the Underwood School District for 18 years and was a member of the Underwood Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, Eldora; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Diane, Bloomington, Ind., and Richard and Joan, Ladysmith, Wis.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Norma and Ronald Hipp, Rice Lake, Wis., and Bette and Wayne Grueneich, Hazen; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and four sisters. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Sakakawea Medical Center, Hazen.

Michael Klein
Michael "Mike" Klein, 74, Mandan, died May 9, 2000, in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with Father Cyprian Meier officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, with military rites provided by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars 707 and American Legion Post 40. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a parish vigil at 7:30 tonight. Visitation continues at the church on Friday, one hour prior to services. Michael Klein, the son of Andrew and Rachel (Werlinger) Klein, was born May 28, 1925, in Shields. He was raised and educated in the Shields area. Michael enlisted in the U.S. Army serving during World War II from 1942 to 1946. On June 24, 1947, he married Linda Kopp in Shields. After his marriage, he worked in Leads, S.D., for the gold mines. He moved to Mandan in 1957, where he was employed as a truck driver delivering mail and cream. He later worked construction for the power plants, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the American Legion. Michael had a great sense of humor. He was a cowboy at heart, enjoyed western movies and reading Louis L'Amour books. He lived a simple style of life, keeping everything basic. He was a great cook and enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and feeding the birds. Michael is survived by Linda; four sons and three daughters-in-law, David (Paula), Manteca, Calif., Jim, Salem, Ore., Steve (Jolene), Havre, Mont., and Lester (Patty) Salem, Ore.; eight daughters and seven sons-in-law, Darlene (Jim) Felchle, Bismarck, Shirley (Scott) Lerfald, Happy Valley, Ore., Ardy (Bill) Osborn, Tualatin, Ore., Kathy (Carl) Hussey, Carson, Wash., Carrole (Scott) Schaner, Mandan, Vicky (Tom) Wangler, Bowling Brook, Ill., Marilyn Gilley, Corvallis, Ore., and Connie (Doug) Krobatch, Eugene, Ore.; 27 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; six brothers and five sisters-in-law, Mark (Billie), Raleigh; Andy (Lillie), Carson, Eugene, Flasher, Joe (Marguirite), Albany, Ore., Ed (Colleen), Oregon, and Adolph (Reni), Walla Walla, Wash., and three sisters and one brother-in-law, Pat (Ray) Spahn, Portland, Ore., Tillie Spenner, Oregon, and Betsy May, Mount Angel, Ore. He is survived by his wife, Ella; one daughter, Betty Giese, Beulah; four sons, Melvin, Killdeer, Henry, Sarasota, Fla., Allen and Milo, both of Dickinson; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Reuben, Oregon City, Ore.; and one sister, Becky Reich, New Jersey.

Evelyn I. Schumacher
Evelyn I. Schumacher, 93, Glendive, Mont., formerly of Bismarck, died May 12, 2000, in a Glendive nursing home. Services will be held at noon Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck. Burial will be in St. Marys Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. Evelyn was born Nov. 26, 1906, in Elgin, the daughter of John and Margaret (Bauer) Hipfner. She was raised and educated there and graduated from Elgin High School in 1926. She obtained her teaching certificate and taught in Elgin area rural schools as well as in Glen Ullin. She married Joseph E. Schumacher, on April 17, 1929, at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Glen Ullin. They farmed west of Heart Butte until they purchased a farm near Baldwin in 1946. They retired and moved to Bismarck in 1957. She had been a resident of the nursing home in Glendive since 1986. Evelyn was a member of St. Mary's Altar Society, and enjoyed crocheting and gardening. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Harold Rants Sr., Bismarck; three sons and four daughters-in-law, Louis and Virginia, Washburn, Wesley and Eleanor, Great Falls, Mont., Larry and Peggy, Bismarck, and Agnes Schumacher, Bismarck; 17 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph, who died in 1985; her son, Wilbert; and three sisters, Pearl Munger, Loretta Ulmer and Olivia Burton.
Florian Fairbanks
Father Florian (George) Fairbanks, O.S.B., 91, Richardton, died May 14, 2000. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Wednesday, at Abbey Church, Richardton. Burial will be in Abbey Cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. MDT tonight at the church. George Leonard Fairbanks was born Oct. 17, 1908 in Saint Paul, Minn. He was the middle son of five born to William and Catherine (Strong) Fairbanks. Two older brothers died as infants and the two younger brothers have preceded him in death. George was raised in Red Lake, Minn. He received his secondary and college education at Saint John's Abbey in Minnesota. He came to Assumption Abbey in 1931 and professed vows as a monk of this abbey on July 11, 1933, receiving the name Florian. He completed his seminary studies at the abbey and was ordained a priest on May 14, 1939. Fr. Florian has broken all the records for longevity for the community of Assumption Abbey. No monk in the history of this abbey has ever reached the age of 91, his years of monastic profession (66), or of ordination (he died on his 61st anniversary day of his ordination). Gifted with so many years, Fr. Florian has also been a gift to many. He spent several years working at various positions at the Abbey but most of his years as a monk he spent in pastoral ministry (55 years). His first assignment in 1940 was to Saints Peter and Paul in Strasburg. This was followed by brief assignments to Salem, S.D., Bowman, Alexander-Watford City. In 1955 he became Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Solen. He was moved to Sacred Heart in Glen Ullin in 1960 where he remained until 1967 when he became pastor of Saint Anthony's Parish in St. Anthony, a position he held for over 30 years. He returned to the abbey to retire, a month short of his 89th birthday in September 1997. Whenever Fr. Florian served he was well loved. He is survived by his monastic brothers at Assumption Abbey and by many nieces and nephews. Memorials are suggested for the Church Renewal Campaign at Assumption Abbey. Ronald Lee Friestad, 58, Winchester, Va., formerly of Kintyre, died May 13, 2000 in a Winchester hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Omps Funeral Home, Winchester. He is survived by his wife, Pamela; his mother, Mabel Feigum; five daughters, Kristi Grabenstein and Kara Hopkins, both of Elizabeth, Colo., Brenda Friestad, Omaha, Neb., Julie Boulais and Stephanie Anderson, both of Winchester; six grandchildren; one sister, Judy Woods, Omaha, and three brothers, Dennis, Valley City, Soren, Eldridge, and Douglas, Kintyre. Anton Geiss
SOLEN -- Anton "Tony" Geiss, 83, Solen, died May 14, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Spirit of Life Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Revs. Cyprian Meier and Casimir Paluck officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Public visitation begins from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. followed by a parish vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. Anton Geiss was born Oct. 31, 1916 in Solen, the son of Vincent and Florendeana (Kuntz) Geiss. He was raised and educated in rural Solen. He was employed with the CCC in S.D. from 1934 to 1935. On Oct. 28, 1941, he married Rose Hatzenbuhler at the Sacred Heart Church in Solen. Anton also worked on the railroad from 1945 to 1946. Anton farmed in Solen until 1954 when they moved to Solen, where he took care of the Solen Public School and the Parochial School as a maintenance man, retiring in 1982. Amongst his interests, he enjoyed playing cards and fishing. He took great pride in his family especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Rose; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ron and Jeanne, Solen, and Dick and Cathy, Ellendale; five grandchildren, Michael, Brad and his wife, Heidi, Charity and her fiance, Russell, Mindy and her fiance, David, and Nicole Geiss; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, William and Shirley, and Vincent and Agnes, all of Seattle, Wash., John and Myrthel, Oregon, and Ralph, Seattle; and four sisters and one brother-in-law, Monica Staudinger, San Pablo, Calif., Rose Berger, Center, Evangeline Dilger, Tacoma, Wash., and Betty and Bob Vaughn, Leon, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.
