Arthur W. Perleberg Sr., 80, rural Jamestown, died Feb. 17, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Jamestown. Burial will be in Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown. He is survived by his wife, Alice; two sons, Arthur Jr., Dalton, Minn., and Ronald, Jamestown; one daughter, Linda Greer, Jamestown; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter, Jamestown; and one sister, Luella Gushwa, Jamestown. Magdalena K. Schmaltz
HAGUE -- Magdalena K. Schmaltz, 99, Hague, died Feb. 16, 2001, in the Strasburg care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hague, with the Rev. Leonard Eckroth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Monday at Myers Funeral Home, Linton. Visitation will continue from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Monday at the church, where a rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Magdalena Kraft was born Sept. 2, 1901, on a farm near Hoven, S.D., the daughter of Raymond and Margaret (Harty) Kraft. She was raised in the Onaka, S.D., area. On Oct. 12, 1920, she married Balzer Schmaltz at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hague. It was a double wedding with her brother, John, and Gustina. Balzer and Magdalena farmed near Hague and had eight children. In 1943 they moved to Hague, where they owned a general store. In 1950 they moved to Igloo, S.D., where her husband worked at the Black Hills Army Depot. She worked various jobs there and in the surrounding area. In 1978 they moved back to Hague. Magdalena had numerous talents including sewing, baking, growing flowers and doing various crafts. She is survived by four daughters and two sons-in-law, Lena Knoll, Pine City, Minn., Angelina and Joe Smith, Hague, Mary Anne Krunholz, Edgemont, S.D., and Barbara and Sam Bigbie, Live Oak, Fla.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ray and Rose, Roscoe, S.D., Dan and Ruth, Rushville, Neb., and Joe and Pi Yam, Cocoa, Fla.; 34 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Balzer; one daughter; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; her parents; five brothers; and three sisters. The family prefers memorials to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hague.
Ida Schumacher
LINTON -- Ida Schumacher, 85, Linton, formerly of Ashley, died Feb. 17, 2001, in the Linton hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Ashley. Burial will be in the church cemetery. She is survived by three daughters, Sylvia Weissner, Linton, Karen Nauert, Rocklin, Calif., and Georgia Schumacher, Jamestown; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Erwin Maier, Hopkins, Minn., and Albert Maier, Bismarck. Tina Staiger
Tina Staiger, 85, Billings, Mont., formerly of Mandan, died Feb. 14, 2001, at her home after a long illness. Services were held Feb. 17, 2001, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Billings. Visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a vigil service and rosary will be held at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. Albertina "Tina" Ferderer was born Dec. 30, 1915, in Oliver County, the daughter of Nick and Rose (Emineth) Ferderer. She married Ruben Staiger Sept. 24, 1955, in Mandan. They moved to Billings following their marriage, where they have made their home since. Tina was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church and the Catholic Daughters. She is survived by her husband, Ruben; two brothers, Emil Ferderer, Steele, and George Ferderer, Somers, Wash.; one sister, Ann Opp, Bismarck; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; seven brothers; and two sisters.

NEW ROCKFORD -- Harris Wishart, 95, New Rockford, died Feb. 17, 2001, in a New Rockford care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church, New Rockford. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Drusilla; one son, John, Laverock, Pa.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. SELBY, S.D. -- Victor Baker, 75, Selby, died Feb. 15, 2001, in the Mobridge hospital. A memorial service was held Feb. 19, 2001, at St. John Lutheran Church, Selby. Burial will be held at a later date in Selby Memorial Gardens Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; one stepson, Scott Artz, Selby; one stepdaughter, Julie Jordre, Sioux Falls, S.D.; two sons, John, Rapid City, S.D., and Todd, California; six stepgrandchildren; and one brother, Chris, Couer d'Alene, Idaho. Louise Ann Gorder
Louise Ann Gorder, 87, Bismarck, died Feb. 17, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Louise Ann Evans Gorder was born Aug. 29, 1913, in Dallas, S.D., the daughter of Hattie (Wollschlager Jensen) and James Evans. She attended Southern State Teachers College and graduated from Northern State Teachers College in South Dakota. She taught at rural schools and in Frederick, S.D. There she met her husband-to-be, J. Roland Gorder. They were married May 31, 1941, in Brady, Texas. From there they moved to Bismarck. A gifted teacher, Louise instilled a love for learning in all she touched whether they were her public school pupils, her Trinity Lutheran Sunday school students or her own children. She taught in New Salem Public Schools and also worked for the N.D. Department of Public Welfare. She was a secretary for many years at Roland Gorder Realty, Inc. Louise is survived by her husband, Roland; one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Nan Gorder, Portland, Ore.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Bill Schwartz, Phoenix, Ariz., and Karen and Ron Garst, Sherwood, Ore.; three grandchildren, Michelle Owens, Brainerd, Minn., Cheri Thompson, Antioch, Calif., and Sam Garst, Sherwood, Ore.; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Esther Evans, Petersburg, Alaska, Frieda Schenefeld, Milaca, Minn., and Ruth and Orris Petersen, Burke, S.D. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Lowell. The family prefers memorials to Prairie Public Television or Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center.

Beatrice R. Laib
Beatrice R. Laib, 79, Bismarck, died Feb. 13, 2001, in Tampa, Fla. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bismarck Funeral Home, with the Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue two hours prior to services on Wednesday. Beatrice was born Nov. 11, 1921, in Bismarck, the daughter of Thomas Sr. and Lesta (Hannah) Pinks. She married Theodore Laib June 7, 1940, in Bismarck. Theodore died in 1998. Beatrice loved traveling and gardening. She is surived by five daughters and two sons-in-law, Luella Miller and Archie Turner, Victorville, Calif., Penny Slocum, Tampa, Fla., Sally Hammons, Nashville, Tenn., and Laura and Ken Wall, and Brenda Kuhn, all of Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, Duwaine and Dale, Carriere, Miss.; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three brothers, Thomas Pinks Jr., Bismarck, Jack Pinks, Tacoma, Wash., and Robert Pinks, Chico, Calif.; and one sister, Bernice Miller, Tacoma, Wash. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore; two grandsons, Scott Laib and Kenneth Hammons Sr.; one great-grandson; two sons-in-law, Ray Slocum and Lester Miller; her parents; two brothers, Wallace and Joseph Pinks; and one sister, Nellie Long.
Velma L. Miller
Velma L. "Butch" Miller, 86, Red Wing, Minn., died Feb. 17, 2001, in a Red Wing hospital. Private graveside services will be held in the spring. Velma was born Aug. 22, 1914, in Castlewood, S.D., the daughter of Vern and Della (Cook) Connor. She graduated from Castlewood High School in 1932. On July 6, 1935, she married Raymond W. Miller in Castlewood. Velma and Raymond moved to Watertown, S.D., where they lived until 1960. They then moved to Bismarck, where they lived until 1972, when they moved to Fargo. A craft and knitting lover, she owned several knitting studios, where she sold goods and taught classes. In 1980, they moved to Red Wing. Raymond died Aug. 6, 1996. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Lynda and Arlan Vollan, Red Wing; and one granddaughter, Siri (Steve) Parkhouse, Red Wing. She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Kenneth Connor; and one infant sister. (Mahn Family Funeral Home, Red Wing)

Clara Zahn
Clara Zahn, 75, Bismarck, died Feb. 16, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in the spring. Clara was born Oct. 9, 1925, at Hague, to Peter and Elizabeth (Holzer) Buechler. She was raised and educated in Hague. She married Steven Zahn Feb. 6, 1950, in Hague. After marriage, they moved to Bismarck where Clara worked at St. Alexius Hospital. After starting their family, she stayed at home and raised her children. She did in-home daycare for several years. She was a wonderful mother, full of life and laughter. She enjoyed being with her children, helping her husband in the garden, shopping, cooking and baking. She also enjoyed visiting, especially with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by eight daughters and seven sons-in-law, Cynthia and Curtis Sprenger, Colette and Paul Sukut, Cheryl and Randy Remmick, and Connie Zahn, all of Bismarck, Clarice and John Davis, Aurora, Colo., Charlene and Ronald Busch, Lakewood, Colo., Charmaine and Steven Roethler, Maple Grove, Minn., and Carla and Richard Gartner, Fargo; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary and Aloysius Zacher, and Elizabeth Scherr, all of Strasburg, and Ann and Tomas Santos, Cocoa, Fla.; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Ferdinand and Cecilia Buechler, Linton, Martin and Agnes Buechler, Bismarck, John and Alice Buechler, Minot, and Al and Janice Buechler, Monroe, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Calvin Sprenger, Amy (Scott) Senger, Rebecca Roethler, Elizabeth Sukut, Rachel Remmick, and Stuart, Valerie, Stephanie and Joseph Gartner; and two great-granddaughters, Shelbie and Calista Sprenger. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steven, on Jan. 1, 2001; one infant daughter, Linda; her parents; and one brother, Carl. The family prefers memorials to the American Cancer Society or Alzheimer's Association.
