Magdalena Schumacher was bom on October 26, 1908 and grew up in a family of 13 children on a farm near Dodge. Her parents were August and Eva (Mossett) Fleckenstein. On November 11, 1929 she married Frank Schumacher. They lived on their farm south of Halliday, ND for 50 years. In addition to the farm work and raising a family of 12 children, three boys and nine girls, Magdalena was always active in her church and other community affairs. During the years on the farm Magdalena served as treasurer for the Big Flat School District; was president of the Christian Mothers' Society at St. Martin's Church; was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America; and frequently served as local director for the Mental Health and March of Dimes fund raising campaigns. In 1966 the family was named "Catholic Farmily of the Year" by the St Pius Knights of Columbus Council in Richardton, ND.
Magdalena was a loving, generous lady and frequently gave of her time and talents to help others. Her ability to raise money by selling chances and/or cookbooks was phenomenal. Over the years she literally sold thousands of chances to raise money for Catholic Education in Bismarck, her church and other worthy causes. She received several awards and other special recognition for these efforts. Another of Magdalena's special interests was her concern for keeping our environment in order. While still living on the farm, and long before many of us were aware of these environmental problems, Magdalena collected newspapers for recycling and organized "clean-up crews" to pick up cans and other junk around the area.
Magdalena and Frank retired from the farm in 1979 and moved to Bismarck where they became members of St Mary's Church. Magdalena was an active member of the St. Jude's Mission Group in that parish. In 1986 they moved to Marillac Manor where Frank died two years later. Magdalena moved to St Vincent's Nursing Home in November, 1999.
