Gordon Benrud
Gordon "Gordy" Benrud, 76, Bismarck, died Feb. 24, 2001. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with the Revs. Jake Kincaid and Mary Porter officiating. Burial will be held in the spring in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Gordy was born Aug. 9, 1924, at Chippewa Falls, Wisc., the son of O.M. and Gladys (Patrow) Benrud. He was raised and eduated in Eau Claire, Wisc. Gordy married Jeanne Aide March 8, 1944, in Chicago. They moved to Bismarck in 1945. Jeanne died in 1987. Gordy worked in the building materials business for most of his career and for many years he owned and operated his own company, Benrud Building Materials. Gordy served on the City Planning Commission for many years. He married Ann Frappia Dec. 12, 1988, in Bismarck. They enjoyed traveling and attended many golf functions throughout the country when Gordy was the Executive Director for the North Dakota Golf Association. Gordy was inducted into the North Dakota Golf Association Hall of Fame in 1998. He was a member of Apple Creek Country Club for nearly five decades, where he also served as president. Gordy was also a lifetime member of the Elks Club. He is survived by his wife, Ann; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and John Bartlett, Sartell, Minn.; two stepdaughters and stepsons-in-law, Jeanne and Lynn Wolf, Mandan, and Anne and Ed Kalianoff, Steele; six grandchildren, Corey and Lee Bartlett, Katie, Megan and Molly Wolf, and Michael Kalianoff; two brothers, David, Paris, Mo., and Donald, Beaver Dam, Wisc.; and two close friends, Dick and Connie Heidt. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Child's Hope Learning Center, 2921 N. 19th St., Bismarck, N.D. 58503, or to St. Joseph School, 410 Collins Ave., Mandan, N.D. 58554.

KULM -- LeRoy L. Gackle, 71, Kulm, died Feb. 22, 2001, in a Jamestown hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Zion Lutheran Church, Kulm. Burial will be in Swede Township Cemetery, Kulm. He is survived by his wife, Marion; one daughter, Kathy Asplund, Bismarck; five granddaughters; three brothers, Russel and Dean, both of Kulm, and Larry, Mineola, Texas; and one sister, Dorothy Nill, Kulm. Catherine Lefor, 84, Dickinson, died Feb. 23, 2001, in a Dickinson care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. MST Tuesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth's Cemetery, Lefor. She is survived by two daughters, Arlene Rohr, Lefor, and Annette Hawk, Newcastle, Wyo.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. NAPOLEON -- Joseph J. Meier, 79, Napoleon, died Feb. 24, 2001, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Napoleon. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He is survived by four sisters, Magdalena Glatt, Mary Engelhardt, and Theresa Eissinger, all of Napoleon, and Ann Bauer, Grafton. William A. Nelson
William A. "Bill" Nelson, 51, Mandan, died Feb. 23, 2001, in a Bismarck hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Charles Axness officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, with military rites by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 707 and American Legion Post 40. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, where a prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Bill was born July 23, 1949, in Mandan, the son of Arthur and Rose (Hegel) Nelson. He was raised and educated in Mandan. Bill served in the U.S. Army from December 1969 to April 1971 and received a Purple Heart in Vietnam. He was united in marriage to Cheryl Schirado May 19, 1972. Bill worked for Agri-Basics as general manager for many years before he formed his own fertilizer company, Bismarck Fertilizer Company, where he was part-owner and manager. Bill was highly respected by his customers and the industry. He loved to hunt with his brothers and friends and didn't miss a deer season. He was also an avid NASCAR fan, always cheering on Dale Earnhardt with his son-in-law. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; two daughters and one son-in-law, Jennifer and Michael Fergel, and Kimberly Nelson, all of Mandan; six sisters, Virginia Felix and Kathleen Kriese, both of Aberdeen, S.D., Violet Olhauser, El Cahon, Calif., Alice Radke, Maplewood, Minn., Leela Villorente, Portsmouth, Va., and Marikay Nelson, Mandan; and eight brothers, Delton, Donald, Clemens, Marvin and Melvin, all of Mandan, Wayne, Lino Lakes, Minn., Robert, Cottage Grove, Minn., and Rodney, Marana, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents.

William J. Pace
William J. "Bill" Pace, 64, Bismarck, died Feb. 25, 2001, at his daughter's home. Services will be held at noon Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan. Bill was born June 17, 1936, in Minot, the son of Glen and Jennie (Helseth) Pace. He was raised and educated in Wolseth. He graduated from Minot High School in 1954 and then attended NDSU. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1960. On Oct. 14, 1961, he married Kathleen Wagner in South Heart. Bill was an avid aviator and entrepreneur. He owned and operated Southwest Aerial Spraying Service and Wild Rose Pilot Service for many years. His two greatest passions were his family and flying. He also enjoyed photography. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; two daughters and sons-in-law, Beth and Reid Anderson, Bismarck, and Brooke and Kevin Melby, Minot; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Scott and Joy, Devils Lake, Todd and Michelle, Bismarck, and David Pace and Cara Armstrong, Fargo; 15 grandchildren, Brenton, Kathleen, Cassandra, William and Benjimen Pace, Anthony, Breanne and David Anderson, McKenzi, Ashton and London Pace, Paige and Noah Melby, and Carlee and Josh Elke; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Gloria and Bill West, Hillsboro, Ohio, and Lorna and John Borghero, Brooklyn, N.Y. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Freida Schlenker, Bismarck, died Feb. 22, 2001, in a Bismarck care center. Private family services were held Feb. 24, 2001, in Bismarck. Burial will be at a later date in Wishek City Cemetery. Emma Wolf
STEELE -- Emma Wolf, 94, Steele, formerly of Jamestown, died Feb. 23, 2001, in a Steele care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with the Rev. Joanne Moeller officiating. Burial will be in Robinson Cemetery, Robinson. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown. Emma Oberlander was born Aug. 8, 1906, near Napoleon, the daughter of Philip and Katherina (Martel) Oberlander. She grew up on the family farm and attended rural schools in Logan County. Emma married John Wolf Nov. 20, 1923, in Logan County. Emma and John farmed in the Tappen area until 1941 when the family moved to Quinby Township, near Robinson. In 1953, they retired and moved to Robinson. John died Nov. 1, 1966. Emma lived in Robinson until 1976, when she moved to Jamestown, and lived at the Gardenette for many years. She later resided at Golden Manor Nursing Home in Steele. Emma enjoyed gardening and cooking. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Elmer and Hattie, Steele, Clarence and Arlene, Robinson, and Albert and Vi, Jamestown; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lorraine and Helmuth Dewald, and Violet and Earl Heidt, all of Bismarck; one son-in-law, Milton Genzel, Jamestown; two daughters-in-law, Betty Wolf, Jamestown, and Lorraine Wolf, Pettibone; 23 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; two daughters, Eileen Gensel and Florence Schweitzer; two sons, Clifford and Harvey; one grandchild; three great-grandsons; one daughter-in-law; two sons-in-law; her parents; eight brothers; and five sisters.
Irene Collins
STANTON -- Irene Collins, our beloved wife and mother, died Oct. 5, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Tuesday at Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, Stanton, with the Rev. Gary Benton officiating. Irene's passions were cooking, reading, visiting with family and friends, and above all, taking care of others. Mom was a member of the Lighthouse Assembly of God in Stanton. She was strong in her faith and loved her church, her people and her God. God truly loved our mother. He graced her with a loving heart, a compassionate spirit and the greatest sense of humor in the world. Anyone who knew her, loved her -- and laughed with her always.
