A. B. Sandau
HAZEN -- A. B. Sandau, 80, Bismarck, formerly of Hazen, died Oct. 13, 2000, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Dale V. Nabben officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. Born in Beulah on April 5, 1920, Mr. Sandau resided from the late 1940s to 1996, in Hazen. During the last two decades of his life, he managed coal yard operations, first at the Basin Electric Power Cooperative plant at Stanton, and then at Basin's plant in Beulah. Prior to that, his work was typical of men of his generation and place. He worked in his youth on his father's farm and then as a coal miner. During his teen years, he was a firefighter in the Kings Canyon National Forest in California. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy, with assignments in Saipan and Guam. After the war, he worked as an automotive repairman in Hazen until his employment with Basin Electric. During his long residence in Hazen, he was an active member of Peace Lutheran Church, where he served two terms as church president, several on the church council, and continuously on committees. He also served for one year as the president of the Beulah Eagles Club Aerie. His wife, Tillie (Schield) Sandau, preceded him in death. They were married 54 years. He is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, Al and Dianne, and Jerry; one grandson, Alan, and his wife, Kristin; one great-granddaughter, Alaina Marie; one sister, Annabelle Crowley; and brothers, Clifford, Harvey, Clayton, Vernon, LeRoy and Gordon. Preceding him in death were three sisters, Ella Doll, Frieda Wagner and Vernice Buchman. The family asks that those wishing to make memorial gifts convey them to the charity of their choice. JAMESTOWN -- Virginia Schauer, 72, Jamestown, died Oct. 15, 2000 in a Jamestown care center. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, at First Assembly of God Church, Jamestown, with burial in Streeter Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Ervin; four children, Reo Fandrich, Medina, Wanda Fandrich, Black Canyon City, Ariz., Debbie Miner, Phoenix, Ariz., Tamara Berg, Nortonville; two stepdaughters, Cheryl Smith, Wimbledon, and Joann Thu, Jamestown; 13 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Leroy Buck, Streeter; five sisters, Laverne Rueb, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Odella Hauff, Golden Valley, Nettie Rueb, Bismarck, Vivian Hansen, Kintyre, Marlys Grasl, Rochester Hills, Mich.; and two half-sisters, Esther Becker, Napoleon, and Edna Dockter, Wishek. Jennie Oien, 90, Spearfish, S.D., died Oct. 16, 2000 in a Belle Fourche health center. A graveside service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday at Carrington Cemetery. George A. Paulus
George A. Paulus, 86, Bismarck, formerly of Drake, passed away Oct. 17, 2000 in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Hillside Cemetery, Fessenden. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. George A. Paulus, son of Leonard and Mary (Faber) Paulus, was born April 24, 1914 on his parents' farm near Drake, where he grew up and received his education. Upon graduating from Drake High School in 1933, he attended Minot Business College in Minot for a time. He then returned to Drake where he worked as a bookkeeper for and later was manager of the Drake Creamery. He was also City Auditor for Drake for several years. On April 26, 1940, he was married to Mayme Lacy at Drake. They moved to Goodrich in 1950, where they owned and operated the local creamery until the spring of 1961, when they moved to Bismarck. While living in Bismarck, he was employeed as a bookkeeper for Wonnenberg Oil Co. They moved to New Rockford in 1964 where he worked for the Zweigle Creamery until moving to Fargo in 1968. He accepted a position with the J C Penney Store in Fargo as manager of their maintenance department, and held that position until his retirement in 1979. They lived a short time in Jamestown before moving to Bismarck in 1983, where they have resided since. He is survived by his wife, Mayme; two sons and daughters-in-law, Douglas and Sandy Paulus, Wishek, and Kenneth and Patty Paulus, Bismarck; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
