Ruth Vogel, 79, died Sept. 28, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck. A rosary and vigil will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today and Sunday at the funeral home. There will be no visitation at the church. Further arrangements are pending.

Hazel M. Bull
Hazel M. Bull, 92, 821 N. Fourth St., Bismarck, died Sept. 1, 2000 at her home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Perry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Art Scanson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation begins Tuesday from 1-9 p.m. and 10 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday, at Perry Funeral Home. Hazel was born July 3, 1908, at Monroe, Louisiana, to Robert P. and Hattie A. (Cobb) Cox. She graduated from Quachita Parish High School and Monroe Commercial College. She worked in an executive position at the Francis Hotel in Monroe until her marriage to Vernon V. Bull on Nov. 28, 1946 in Monroe. In 1950 she and her husband moved to Bismarck where he expanded his oil career. In 1957, they built a lake home and founded Peat Products north of Bottineau in the Turtle Mountains. They Bulls had lived at the Grand Pacific Hotel and the Prince Hotel before moving to their home on fourth street. They were very fond of their lake home and spent many summers enjoying the beauty of nature and its surroundings. Hazel liked keeping the books and worked as secretary for their oil and peat moss businesses. She loved to cook, bake cakes and play the piano. She is survived by one nephew, Willis Andens III, McKinney, Texas; and one niece, Maxine Tipton, Missouri City, Texas. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Vernon, who died on Feb. 4, 1996. (Perry Funeral Home, Mandan)

He is survived by his wife, Elaine, Maddock; one daughter, Peggy Hakanson, Fargo; a son, James, Sioux Falls, S.D.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and a sister, Evelyn Monahgan, Sandy, Ore. June Rovig
June Rovig, 85, Mandan, died Sept. 1, 2000 in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at First Lutheran Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Paul D. Fiske officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m.-noon Wednesday, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. June was born on June 1, 1915 in Mandan, the daughter of John and Minnie (Olson) Rovig. A graduate of Mandan High School, she began working for Northwestern Bell Telephone as an operator in 1936. She moved to the Bismarck office in 1948, transferred first to the Mandan business office and then to the Minot district office in 1955. In 1964, she returned to Mandan, where she retired in March 1979, after 43 years of service. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, crocheting and dining out with family and friends. She was a member of the Pioneers of Northwestern Bell. She is survived by her cousins, Del Skjod, Susan Kocourek and Jim Skjod, all of Mandan, Robert Skjod, Sacramento, Calif., Lou Loven, California and Carol Smith, Oregon. She was preceded in death by an infant sister, an infant brother and her sister, Dolores Pierce. (Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan)
Louis Anton Zent
MINOT -- Louis Anton Zent, 1209 33rd Ave. S.W., Minot and formerly of Mott, died Sept. 1, 2000 in his home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Little Flower Catholic Church, Minot, with burial in Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at the church. A vigil prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at the church. Louis lived and farmed near Mott most of his life. He married Shirley Jorgenson on Aug. 12, 1954. They moved to Minot in March of 1999. He was an unassuming man who loved and cared for his family. He enjoyed reading, carpentry and appreciated life's simple gifts. He was preceded in death by his parents Anton and Katherine Zent and granddaughter, Ashley Artz. Surviving family include his wife, Shirley; daughters: Patricia Eckes of Dickinson; Brenda Zent Artz of Minot; and Debra Jensen of Grand Forks and sons: Jeff Zent of Fargo and Steve Zent of DePere, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren; his sisters: Rose Hoffman of Prosser, Wash., Anna Meier, Dickinson and Hilda Wheeler of Toledo, Ore. Elizabeth J. "Liz" Bergan, 52, Watertown, S.D., died Sept. 2, 2000. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, Watertown, with burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery. John Dittus
GARRISON -- John Dittus, 76, Garrison, died Sept. 3, 2000 at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Garrison, with the Revs. Hugo L. Blotsky and Paul Cervinski officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. today at Thompson Funeral Home, Garrison, and for one hour prior to the service at the church. A rosary and vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the church. John was born on Aug. 25, 1924 to John and Pauline (Hach) Dittus in Fallon, Mont. where he was raised and educated. He entered the Navy in 1943 and served in the South Pacific. In 1946, he began his career at Sears in which he worked for 35 years in Great Falls, Mont. and later in Minot. He married Helen Retterath on Jan. 21, 1947 in Great Falls. He retired from Sears in 1982. John then went back to work and became manager for OK Hardware and later worked for True Value Hardare in Minot and Bismarck. He then retired for good in 1996 and to he and Helen's lake home in Garrison. John was a member of Holy Name Society at Little Flower Church in Minot, the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and a life member of the Elks. John was an avid fisherman who loved living at the lake, and was a avid sports fan. He is survived by his wife, Helen; one daughter, Kathleen Kesselring, Bismarck; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jeff Dittus, Boise, Idaho, and Joe and Mary (Schmidt) Dittus, Minot; five grandchildren, Brad Kesselring and his wife, Kathy Ann, Heather and her husband Kerry Klatt, Brittany Dittus, Andy Dittus, and Amber Dixon Dittus; and one great-grandson, Kole Klatt; one brother and sister-in-law, Reuben and Loretta (Arp) Dittus, Great Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents; one great-grandson, Victor John Kesselring; two brothers, Otto and Milan Herb Dittus; and two sisters, Ann Svatosch and Regina Welley. Memorials can be sent to the American Cancer Society, St. Alexius Hospice and St. Alexius Kidney Dialysis.
Carl Merkel
BEULAH -- Carl Merkel, 87, Mandan, and formerly of Beulah, died Sept. 2, 2000 in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Wednesday, at Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah, with the Rev. Doreen Jeffers officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. MDT Tuesday, at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah. Carl was born Nov. 12, 1912 in Mercer County, a son of John and Rosina (Flemmer) Merkel. He was raised and educated in rural Mercer County. On Jan. 16, 1934, he married Martha Jaeger. Carl worked as a coal miner for 44 years, retiring in 1977. Martha died on Aug. 27, 1987. Carl moved to Mandan in 1988. On June 26, 2000, he married Sharissa Kubik. On Aug. 1, 2000, he became a resident of the Mandan Care Center. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Beulah. Carl was a good hearted and very kind man. He loved woodworking and fixing lawnmowers. He is survived by his wife, Sharissa, Mandan; one son, Kenneth Merkel, Hot Springs, Ark.; one son-in-law, Don Lagoria, Lompoc, Calif.; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Louise Sailer, Beulah; five half-sisters, Bertha Sailer, Bismarck, Helen Sailer, Beulah, Frieda and Reuben Mittelsteadt, Hazen, Ida Mittelsteadt, Bismarck, and Esther and Bob Schalkle, Bismarck; one half-brother, Jake and Eleanor Becker, Beulah. Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Martha; his daughter, Emma; his daughter-in-law, Verna; a half-sister, Rose Sailer; and a half-brother, Phillip Becker. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; four daughters, Dr. Kathleen Martin, Canoga Park, Calif., Roberta Wagner, Warrenton, Va., Susan Hegel, West Hollywood, Calif., and Mary Morrow, Minneapolis; one son, John V. Velma M. Berger
Velma M. Berger, 84, Billings, Mont., died Sept. 3, 2000 at her home. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. MDT Thursday, at Atonement Lutheran Church, Billings. Cremation has taken place. Velma was born in Linton, a daughter of Benjamin and Katie (Miller) Haggard. She was raised and educated in Bismarck and later married Myron Hawkes in San Diego, Calif. To this union a son was born, Ed Hawkes. Velma returned to North Dakota, and married John G. Berger in Glendive, Mont. Together they owned and operated Berger Trucking for over 40 years. After 50 years of marriage, Mr. Berger passed away in 1981 and in 1990, Velma moved to Billings to be near the family she loved. Survivors include three sons: Ed Hawkes, Denver, Colo., and John E. and Patrick L. Berger, both of Billings; two daughters, Shelley Wanner-Berger and Tiki Berger, both of Billings; a brother, Paul Haggard, San Diego; eight grandchildren, Tauni, Dallas, Chris, Atlanta, Ga., Levi, Cozette, Tauni, Kenneth, Jaxon and Jon Ryan, all of Billings; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Berger; a daughter, Mozell Berger; and a granddaughter, Casey Berger. "Our beloved mother, grandmother and friend.
