MINOT -- Carrie Nelson, 94, Minot, and formerly of Glenburn, died Sept. 17, 2000 in a Minot care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Glenburn, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, rural Minot. Gertrude W. Schaefer
Gertrude W. Schaefer, 89, Bismarck, died Sept. 16, 2000 in a Sioux City, Iowa, care center. Services will be held at noon Monday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. A rosary will also be said at Marillac Manor, Bismarck at 7 p.m. Saturday. Gert was born Oct. 31, 1910 in Windsor, the daughter of August and Anna (Schultz) Wanzek. She attended St. John's Academy in Jamestown, graduating as valedictorian at age 16. She attended St. Alexius School of Nursing and obtained her R.N. in 1932. She worked for Drs. Henderson, Goughnor, and Orr at Capital City Clinic, which later became Q&R Clinic. She was also a staff nurse at St. Alexius in the Psychiatric Department for 12 years and a staff nurse at St. Vincents. Gert married Raymond Schaefer in 1933 and they had six children. She taught square dancing with him in Bismarck for 46 years. Gert was a member of Church of St. Mary, St. Mary's Altar Society, and Catholic Daughters for almost 70 years. Gert is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Ree Klinkhammer, Lafayette, Calif., Mary Pat and Tom Severin, Dakota Dunes, S.D., and John Raffaelle, Glen Carbon, Ill.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dick and Mary, Fargo, Mike and Mary, Orangevale, Calif., and Tom and Bernadette, Lancaster, Wis.; 22 grandchildren and three brothers, Joe Wanzek, Preston, Iowa, Phil Wanzek, Surprise, Ariz., and Robert Wanzek, Chicago, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; her parents; one daughter, Jackie Raffaelle; two brothers, five sisters and one son-in-law, Paul Klinkhammer. (Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck)
William A. Schaff
SHIELDS -- William A. Schaff, 78, 3825 76th Street, Shields, died Sept. 18, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Saturday, at Saint Lawrence Catholic Church, Flasher, with the Revs. Gary L. Benz and Kuriakose Nediakala officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. Thurday, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and continue after 4 p.m. MDT at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Flasher, with a parish vigil at 7 p.m. MDT. William A. Schaff was born Oct. 6, 1921, at Flasher. He was the son of Adam and Anna (Berger) (Yantzer) Schaff. Bill was raised and educated on a farm 10 miles southeast of Flasher in Oak Coulee Township. Bill married Caroline Barth on Feb. 24, 1943 at St. Peter and Paul Church in Fallon. They moved to a farm four miles northeast of Flasher and on Feb. 12, 1947, they moved 13 miles south of Flasher where they purchased a ranch, now known as the Three Butte Ranche. They farmed and ranched until 1983, when they retired. They still lived on the ranch at the time of his death. He loved hunting, fishing and rodeos. After his retirement, Bill continued to help his neighbors and friends with farm work. Bill was a director on the Mor-Gran-Sou Board for 18 years, past member of the Elks, Moose and St. Anthony Verein and present member of St. Peter and Paul Verein, Fallon. Bill is survived by his wife, Caroline of 57 years, Shields; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Victor (Susan) Santa Barbara, Calif., Vernon (Nettie), Audobon, Iowa, Cletus, Santa Barbara, Harold (Cheryl) Goleta, Calif., and Willard, Penn Valley, Calif.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sherry Schaff, Solvang, Calif., Annette (James) Bartlett, Culver City, Calif., and Betty Nell (Floyd) Schafer, Rapid City, S.D.; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Matt (Eleanore), Tacoma, Wash., and Joe (Alvina), Bismarck, and Delores Morris, Mandan; four sisters and five brothers-in-law, Doreen (Val) Schlosser, Mandan, Katie Reisenauer, Bismarck, Frances (Terrance) Helbling, Bismarck, Barbara (Elmer) Horning, Bismarck, Kasper Steckler, Tacoma, Wash., and Michael DeFusco, Irmo, S.C. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Florence and Theresa; and two half-sisters, Elizabeth Schafer and Clementine Schaff, and one brother, Frank, and one grandchild.
John F. Schock
ASHLEY -- John F. Schock, 78, Ashley, died Sept. 17, 2000 in the Ashley nursing home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, at Ashley Baptist Church, with the Rev. Darwin Stahl officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen, S.D. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church today. Honor casketbearers will be all of the Ashley Nursing Home Staff. Casketbearers will be LeRoy Fey and LeRoy Goehring, both of Ashley, Milton Kolb and Terry Steinwandt, both of Aberdeen, Keith Neuharth, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Ryan Pfeifle, Minneapolis. The organist will be Ruth Jenner. The Ashley Baptist Men's Quartet will perform special music. John F. Schock, son of Fredrick and Caroline (Helfenstein) Shock was born Jan. 20, 1922 at Lehr. His family lived in Long Lake, S.D. where he grew up and attended rural school. He worked with his family on the Schock Homestead farm. He was united in marriage to Naomi Steinwandt on Nov. 23, 1943 on the Steinwandt's homestead in McPherson County, S.D. They lived and farmed there raising small grains and livestock. In 1971, they retired from farming and moved to Aberdeen. He then went to work for Seidel Well Drilling and Centennial Homes. In 1975, they moved to Ashley, where he was employed with Fey, Inc. until 1992, when his failing health forced him to retire. John enjoyed listening to music, especially German Polka Music. He also found it relaxing to take drives in his car and to read. He was a member of the Ashley Baptist Church and past board member of the Bergdorf School Board. Survivors include his wife, Naomi; two daughters, Diane Pfeifle, Bismarck, and Wanda (Arnold) Bain, Aberdeen; two sisters, Ella (Leo) Feickert, Lancaster, Calif., and Oliva (Herbert) Kolb, Aberdeen; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild. Steven J. Fowler
Steven J. Fowler, 49, died Sept. 16, 2000. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Tom Dunham officiating. Steve was born on April 17, 1951, in Bismarck, the son of Paul and Clarinda (Dockter) Fowler. Steve's father was in the U.S. Army and their family lived in many places across the United States. For a short time they lived in Turkey while Steve was in early grade school. When Paul was stationed in a place where the family couldn't follow, Clarinda and the boys would move back to Bismarck, their permanent home. He graduated from Bismarck High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1973. Upon his return, he graduated from Bismarck Junior College. On June 10, 1972, Steve married Kathleen Sweeney in Bismarck. They lived in Denver while Steve was in the service and later they moved to Los Angeles, where he went to photography school. In 1982, they opened Fowler Photography in Bismarck. They have three children, Poppy, 21; Simon, 18; and Andrew, 10 years old. He enjoyed being a photographer, a career he chose in the second grade when his dad gave him his first camera. In his work he had a gift of taking what you see in everyday life and with a photograph turning it into a memory for a lifetime. His greatest love in life was his family, his friends and spending time with them. Steve was a true gentleman. He will always be remembered for his sense of humor and his quick wit with a pun when he made us laugh until we cried. Steve is survived by his wife, Kathy; their three children, Poppy, Simon and Andrew; Poppy's fiance, Jamy Mills; his mother, Clarinda, Bismarck; his brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Barb Fowler, Billings, Mont.; his sister, Carol Ley, Bismarck; his mother-in-law, Gloria Sweeney, Bismarck; his brothers-in-law, Jim, John, Mike and Pat Sweeney; his sisters-in-law, Ellen Handegard, Barb Ringham, Judi Taylor and Mary Crompton and their families; many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. He also has many, many good friends he leaves behind. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the donor's choice.
