Theodore Richter
GOODRICH -- Theodore "Ted" Richter, 91, Goodrich, died Sept. 16, 2000 in the Harvey nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Peace Lutheran Church, Goodrich. Burial will be in Goodrich City Cemetery. Visitation will held on 2-8 p.m. today at Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey. Theodore was born on March 22, 1909 near Goodrich. Theodore was the son of Emanuel and Barbara (Goll) Richter. He grew up and attended rural school there. He married Eva Dockter on Nov. 12, 1935 near Goodrich. He married Eva Dockter on Nov. 12, 1935 at Goodrich and they took over his parents' farm north of Goodrich. He retired in 1975 and they moved into Goodrich. They moved to the Sheridan Memorial Home in McClusky in 1995. His wife Eva died on Feb. 4, 1998. He then moved to the St. Aloisius Nursing Home, Harvey. Theodore was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church and served on its council. He also served on the Goodrich Rural Fire Department, Schiller Township School Board, and the City of Goodrich Election Board. Ted is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Marlene, Goodrich; daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Gene Wehe, Juneau, Alaska; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; three brothers and three sisters. (Hertz Funeral Home, Harvey)

Hertha M. Schields
Hertha M. Schields, 78, Bismarck, died Sept. 17, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. A private family service will be held. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday at Bismarck Funeral Home. Hertha was born at Dodge. She was the daughter of Theo and Amelia Schields. She was a graduate of Dodge High School. Hertha received her teaching certificate at Dickinson State University, her Bachelor of Arts Degree at the University of Pocatello and completed a year of graduate study at Moscow, Idaho. Hertha was a public school teacher for 37 years, teaching in North Dakota, Minnesota and Idaho. She loved music and was in church choir wherever she taught. She was active in teaching Bible school and playing the piano for nursing homes in areas where she taught. Hertha enjoyed life, she was always ready to share and help wherever she was needed. She especially enjoyed socializing with her sisters and brothers. She took special pride in the accomplishments of her nephews and nieces. She was deeply loved by her sisters and brothers. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by three sisters, Edna Raber and Eleanor Akidakis, both of Bismarck, Irene Brandtner, Portland, Ore.; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Ted and Charlotte Schields, Bismarck, Leona Schields, Dodge; and two brothers-in-law, A.B. Sandau, Bismarck, and Leo Miller, Mountain Home, Idaho. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Hilda Miller and Tillie Sandau; and two brothers, Dick Schields and Ray Schields. George Dewalt
George "Joe" Dewalt, Bismarck, died Sept. 15, 2000 in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Faith Lutheran Church, with Denise Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. tonight at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. George "Joe" Dewalt was born Sept. 14, 1914 in Ashley, to George F. and Rosa Bella (Hart) Dewalt and grew up in the Ashley area. He married Natelia M. Schock on Oct. 5, 1952 in Ashley. He served in the Army during World War II and worked for the North Dakota Highway Department for over 30 years until he retired in 1980. George is survived by his wife, Natelia "Tillie," two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah Dewalt Nelligan and Royce Nelligan, Burnsville, Minn., and Marsha Dewalt Hoyos, Tucson, Ariz.; his grandchildren, Joseph and Katy Nelligan, Natalia Hoyos; his sisters, Cleo Lee; his twin sister, Grace Delzer, Irene Johnson, Gladys Hellvig, Rose Rohrer, Edna Reid and Florence Sailor; his brother, Elmer Dewalt; and his stepbrother, John Stetema. Julia Fink
Julia Keller Fink, 97, 410 W. Boulevard Ave., Bismarck, died Sept. 18, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at noon Wednesday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Public visitation will be today from noon-9 p.m. at Boelter Funeral Home, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. She was born July 25, 1903 in Grassner (Ukraine) Russia, the daughter of Michael and Barbara (Gross) Keller. Julia arrived in the United States in 1905 at the age of two. The Keller family homesteaded seven miles northeast of Strasburg. Julia was confirmed and made her first communion on July 4, 1915, at the Rosantal Church in rural Emmons County. Julia's mother, Barbara died in 1920. In 1921, Julia, her sister Amelia, along with her father moved off the farm to Bismarck. She was employed by attorney, Scott Cameron and family as a full time domestic. Julia married Otto W. Fink in 1928 and they had two sons, Otto Jr. in 1928 and Robert in 1930, both born in Fargo. The little family then moved to Bismarck in 1930, and Julia gave birth to Patrick in 1942, her third son. She always had a big garden at 419 N. 10th Street, the first family home bought in 1939, the fresh vegetables from her garden were sold to the St. Alexius kitchen. She loved to put up or can chokecherry jelly, dill pickles and others, and also 30 quarts of pheasant in 1942. After five years in Tacoma, Wash., the family returned to Bismarck and operated two restaurants in Bismarck. Julia made several trips to the Tacoma area to visit her sons and she had 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. Julia belonged to the Cathedral Parish when the family moved to 410 W. Boulevard in Bismarck. She made large quantities of cookies for Father Cassidys' Boys' Ranch. The Baptist Nursing Home welcomed Julia on Sept. 9, 1994. Her family has many memories of their visits at the home. Julia is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Otto Jr. and Jacqueline, Kent, Wash., Verla Fink, Yelm, Wash., and Patrick William Fink and Colin McKenzie, both of Portland, Ore.; 18 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto, on Jan. 20, 2000; one son, Robert J.; her parents, Michael and Barbara Keller; two sisters, Magadelena Glatt and Emilia Vogel; and three brothers, Frank, Matt and Pete Keller. HARVEY -- Florence Graumann, 77, Harvey, died Sept. 16, 2000 in the Harvey hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Mennonite Brethren Church, Harvey, with burial in the Sunnyside Cemetery. She is survived by two sons, Gene, Harvey, Tom, Baxter, Minn.; four daughters, Bonnie Fadenrecht, Freeman, S.D., Celi Bachmeier, Bottineau, Karen Emter, Glen Ullin, and Janell Blade, Grand Rapids, Mich.; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Eva V. Jackson, 95, Lemmon, S.D., died Sept. 16, 2000 in a Lemmon nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Wednesday, at Prairie Hills Church of God, Lemmon. She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Roesch and Vernette Grantham, both of Lemmon; one sister, Ruth Anderson, Roseburg, Ore.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Catherine Kubisiak
Catherine Lovin Kubisiak, 88, Grand Junction, Colo., died Aug. 31, 2000 at her home. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. Catherine was born in Mandan on Nov. 5, 1911 to Melchoir "Mel" Herner and Magdaline Knoll Herner, the sixth of 12 children. Her parents, three brothers and eight sisters preceded her in death. Catherine attended schools in Mandan, and was employed by the Bank of North Dakota in Bismarck until retirement. She married Carl G. Lovin of Bismarck on Aug. 4, 1947 at Great Falls, Mont. Carl died on Sept. 14, 1987. Catherine married James K. Kubisiak on May 18, 1990. They lived in Bismarck until May 28, 1999, moving then to Grand Junction, Colo., where she lived with her husband until her death. Travel was a major joy for Catherine, giving her opportunity to develop an avid hobby photographing scenic areas of the United States and Canada. She also enjoyed walking and hiking in scenic areas of numerous national parks, monuments and wilderness areas. She is survived by her husband, James, Grand Junction; and his six children, Thomas and family, Portland, Ore., Kathleen and family of Billings, Mont., Russell and family of Missoula, Mont., Mary and husband of Billings, and Steven and Michael, both of Fort Collins, Colo. Valens S. Meier
Valens S. Meier, 40, died Sept. 17, 2000 in a farm accident. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Steele, with the Rev. Thomas Krupich officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Steele. Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. today at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Steele. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at the church. Valens Stanley Meier was born Dec. 5, 1959 at Ashley, the son of Tony and Julia (Wald) Meier. He grew up in Steele and attended Steele High School. He was engaged in farming until his death. Valens loved spending time with children and his nieces and nephews, especially Jackie and Dillon. He was a member of the local Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed dancing, especially polkas, and just visiting with friends. He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his parents, Tony and Julia Meier, seven sisters and six brothers-in-law, Rosemary and John Puklich, Braddock, Elsie and Jim Volk, Bismarck, Bernice and Tony Puklich, and Luella Brahos, all of Steele, and Deb and Craig Hester, Bismarck; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Kenny and Linda Meier, Steele, Victor and Sarah Meier, Bismarck, and Andy Meier, New England; and 24 nieces and nephews.
