ELGIN -- Albert L. Sprecher, 96, Elgin, died Sept. 9, 2000 in the Mott nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Wednesday, at Ebenezer United Church of Christ, north of Elgin, with burial in the church cemetery. He is survived by his daughter, Marlene White, Mandan; one brother, Paul, Mesa, Ariz.; one sister, Amelia Hirsch, Mott; five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Dennis J. Thompson
Dennis J. Thompson, 58, Buffalo, S.D., died Sept. 10, 2000 in a Spearfish, S.D. hospital. Services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Thursday, at Harding County High School Gymnasium, Buffalo, with burial in Buffalo Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Rita; one daughter, Ann Parfrey, Buffalo; one son, Frank, Cheyenne, Wyo.; two brothers, Don, Buffalo, and Roger, Bowman; and four grandchildren. Raymond Wagner
HAZELTON -- Raymond Wagner, 79, Hazelton, died Sept. 9, 2000 in a Strasburg care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at First Baptist Church, Linton, with the Rev. Conrad Baggott officiating. Burial will be in Linton Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Wednesday, at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Ray was born Sept. 5, 1921 in Linton, the son of Richard and Magdelena (Munsch) Wagner. He was raised and educated in the Hazelton area. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1945. Ray married Alice Baumiller on June 20, 1945 in Mandan. They lived and farmed near Hazelton until 1954. They continued farming, but moved into Hazelton. Ray also worked as a salesman for Wentz Equipment before purchasing it in 1971 and renaming it Hazelton Equipment. He retired from the implement dealership in 1983, but continued farming until retiring in 1992. Ray and Alice enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona. He entered the Strasburg Care Center in 1998. Ray enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling, reading, visiting with family and friends. He was a very active member of First Baptist Church, Linton, Hazelton Board of Housing Development, American Legion, and the Lions Club. Ray was also instrumental in the organizaiton of the Mens Brotherhood of the Montana- Dakota Association of the North American Baptist Church. Ray is survived by his wife Alice, Hazelton; one daughter and son-in-law, June and Spencer Larson, Linton; one son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Cindy Wagner, Spring Hill, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Nicholas, Marisha, and Austin, all of Spring Hill, and April Larson, Linton; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, O'Neil and Jackie Wagner, Hazelton, Elmer Wagner, Garland, Texas, and Vernon and Florence Wagner, Hazelton; three sisters and three brothers-in-law, Ellenora and Clarence Schultz, Mesa, Ariz., Violet and Glen Olson, Bismarck, and Luella and Wally Maier, Bellingham, Wash. Ray was preceded in death by both parents and two brothers, Emil and William.

CARRINGTON -- Frayna Braaten, 84, Carrington, died Sept. 11, 2000 in the Carrington health center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at Faith Baptist Church, Carrington, with burial in Binford Cemetery. William L. Pittman
William "Bill" L. Pittman, 89, Sunnyvale, Calif., died Sept. 3, 2000 at his home. Private inurnment will be held at Roseville Cemetery, Roseville, Calif. He is survived by two sons, Darrel, Bismarck, and Keith, Sunnyvale; two grandsons and four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Otis, Fresno, Calif.

MINOT -- Ann R. Rogneby, 95, Minot, and formerly of Berthold, died Sept. 8, 2000 in a Minot hospital. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Zion Lutheran Church, Berthold, with burial in Wildrose Cemetery, rural Berthold. She is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Brown, Berthold, Marlys Kline, Tampa, Fla., and Sharon Tabor, Iron, Minn.; two sons, Allan, Bismarck, and Robert, Moorhead, Minn.; two stepsons, Marvin and Elmer Rogneby, both of Washington; 22 grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Nina Marie Semmens
FARGO -- Nina Marie Semmens, 95, Fargo, died Sept. 12, 2000 in a Fargo care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at Mavis Whiting Chapel, Bethany Homes, Fargo. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, at First Lutheran Cemetery, Litchville. She is survived by three daughters, Corrine "Pat" Opdahl, Bismarck, Doris Sand, Fargo and Janice Strinden, Grand Forks; one brother, Jacob Jacobsen, Cooperstown; 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Joseph T. Smith
Joseph T. "Torch" Smith, Jr., 68, Bismarck, died Sept. 11, 2000 at his home after a three-year battle with cancer. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, at Church of the Ascension, Bismarck, with the Rev. Marvin Klemmer officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, Mandan. Military rites will be provided by both American Legion Lloyd Spetz Post No. 1 and VFW Post No. 1326, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Dakota Memorial Chapel, Bismarck, and one hour prior to the service at the church Thursday. Joe was born Jan. 11, 1932 in Bismarck, the son of Joseph T. and Marian (Gruber) Smith. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1949. He attended Bismarck State College until May of 1951. He attended the University of North Dakota from 1951-1953. In 1953 he enlisted in the Marine Corps 1st Air Wing stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif., until January of 1955. He also served in Korea. He returned to UND and graduated in 1958 with a BS in Business Administration. In November of 1958, he was employed at Job Service as a Statistician in the R&A Section. In 1962, he was promoted to Chief of the R&A Section and in 1978 was promoted to Director of Administrative Services, retiring in November of 1988. Joe received many merit awards and Presidential Citations for his work in Employment Security. He was a life member of Lloyd Spetz Post No. 1 of the American Legion and was a member of the American Legion National Legislative Council. He served as Commander in 1984 and 1990 of the local post and was the only person to serve two terms as Commander. Joe also served as 5th District Commander in 1985 and served on the Executive Committee many years as chairman. He was a volunteer lobbyist at the North Dakota Legislature in 1989 and 1991 for veterans benefits. He was president of the State Veterans Coordinating Council in 1997 and 1998, resigning due to ill health. He served eight years as Treasurer of the Open Your Heart Campaign. He was a member of the NRA and AARP. Joe's hobbies included fishing, hunting, reloading shells, woodworking and being Mr. Fixit. He also enjoyed playing cards, reading and doing crossword puzzles. Joe married Pauline Rambur on May 9, 1959 and had two children, Sandra and Doug. Joe is survived by his wife, Pauline; one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Karla, Bismarck; one daughter, Sandra Arndt, Arnegard; four grandchildren, Cole and his wife, Jessica Arndt, Williston, Bobby Arndt, Jamestown, and Lauren Smith and Ryanne Smith, Bismarck; one great-grandson, Austin Arndt, Williston; and one sister and brother-in-law, Lois Ann and Paul Nordstog, Billings, Mont. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Rita Marie (Smith) Elery. Joe loved spending traditional holidays with his family. He was a very kind, gentle, moral and charitable man.

DICKINSON -- Laura Weiler, 75, Dickinson, died Sept. 10, 2000 in a Dickinson care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with burial in the church cemetery. She is survived by her husband, George; two daughters, Marjorie Hirning, Bismarck, Lucille Dullum, Dickinson; four sons, Larry Weiler, Houston, Texas, Rodney Weiler, West Valley City, Utah, Kevin Weiler, Dickinson, Steven Weiler, Sioux Falls, S.D.; six sisters, Betty Kuntz, Dickinson, Rose Kuntz, Belfield, Dorathy Tormaschy, Gladstone, Lucille Tormaschy, Richardton, Evelyn Wehner and Cathy McChunze, both of Dickinson; and three brothers, Joe Miller, Gillette, Wyo., Arthur Miller, Dickinson, Mike Miller, Minneapolis. Marie Eva Feist
STRASBURG -- Marie Eva Feist, 76, Bismarck, formerly of Strasburg, died Sept. 11, 2000, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg, with the Rev. Leonard Eckroth officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, where a rosary will be said at 7:30 tonight. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. Marie was born Aug. 25, 1924, near Hazelton, the daughter of Philip and Monica (Schwalick) Nagel. She was raised on the family farm west of Strasburg. Marie attended St. Benedict's School and also boarded at the Ursaline Convent in Strasburg. On Feb. 7, 1942, she married Frank P. Feist, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Krassna. They later made their home on a farm west of Strasburg, in the Winona area. In 1953, they moved to Strasburg. In 1996, they moved to Bismarck due to health reasons. While living in Strasburg, Marie was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary's Altar Society. Marie, or Eva, as most people knew her, loved flowers and reading. One of her most enjoyable pasttimes was singing and playing the guitar and piano with family and friends. Her dearest love on this earth was her family. She is survived by two daughters, DeVonne Cotton and Denise Cotton, both of Bismarck; one granddaughter, Shanna Cotton, Bismarck; and one son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Patricia Feist, Vista, Calif. She was preceded in death by her infant sister; her parents; an infant daughter; and her husband, Frank, who died on March 31, 1999. Dear beloved mother, grandmother and friend, our love for you will remain forever. The family prefers memorials in Eva's name to St. Alexius Home Health and Hospice.
Agnar Johansen
Master baker Agnar Johansen, born in Sandefjord, Norway on January 18, 1913, died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday morning, September 10, 2000 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Agnar is survived by his wife "Peachy" and children, Kjell, Jenny, Norman, and Bjarne; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Agnar and his family immigrated to the USA in 1948, and moved to in Bismarck in 1951. Agnar was a life member of the Sons of Norway Sverdrup Lodge and Trinity Lutheran Church. Agnar and Peachy owned and operated the Dakota Maid Bakery until retirement in 1983. The bakery was well known for its variety of high quality breads and fine Norwegian baked goods. After retirement in 1983, Agnar volunteered at the Med Center One coffee shop until Parkinsonâs disease slowed him down. In 1999, they moved to Whitefish Bay, WI to live with their son Kjell. Pursuant to his wishes, Agnar's body was donated to the Medical College of Wisconsin. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church at 2 PM on October 8, 2000. Remembrances may be sent to Trinity in his name.
