Roy A. Erickson, 95, Bismarck, died May 31, 2000, in Bismarck. Arrangements are pending at Eastgate Funeral Service.
Simon Henry Gimbel
Simon Henry Gimbel was born Jan. 10, 1921, on a farm near Hazelton, the son of Julius and Magdalena (Opp) Gimbel. He attended a rural grade school and graduated from Hazelton High School in 1940. Simon entered the U.S. Army on Jan. 28, 1943, and served in the Philippines during World War II. After his discharge on Dec. 28, 1945, he returned to Hazelton. On Nov. 10, 1947, he married Beverly Bower at Hazelton, and they made their home in Hazelton where he and his brother operated the Gimbel Bar. In 1957 he began working for the U.S. Postal Service and was a postmaster for 27 years. Simon was a life member of Strasburg VFW and the Hazelton American Legion. He enjoyed playing cards, golfing and driving around the countryside. Simon had a gift of gab and he loved being with his grandchildren. He died at his home on May 30, 2000. Grateful to have shared his life are his wife, Beverly; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Terry and Paulette, Linton, and Leslie "Dude" Gimbel, Hazelton; one daughter and son-in-law, Shelly and Shane Flaagan, Tolna; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Maudie Stoller, Emily and Leo Bitz, and Mathilda Stewart, all of Bismarck. Simon was preceded in death by his parents; one infant son; two brothers; and two sisters. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Foundation. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, Hazelton, with the Rev. Geary Dodd officiating. Burial will be in Hazelton Cemetery, with military rites by Hazelton American Legion. Vistiation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. today and 9-11 a.m. Friday at Myers Funeral Home, Linton. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services.
Solomon Herrmann
JAMESTOWN -- Solomon "Sully" Herrmann, 87, of Jamestown, died May 31, 2000, in a Fargo hospital. Solomon Herrmann was born February 25, 1913, in Dickey County, near Kulm. He grew up, attended school and farmed with his family. On July 21, 1940, he married Alice Eslinger in Fredonia. They farmed near Kulm until 1954 when he moved to Jamestown. He worked for Goodman Plumbing and Heating, Red Deery Heating and Sheetmetal, before purchasing Twin Hi-Way Mobil in 1965. He also sold used cars with Rueben Wolfe under Wolfe Herrmann Used Cars. He retired in 1976. He was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Jamestown. Sully is survived by his wife, Alice Herrmann, of Jamestown; two daughters and one son-in-law, Janet Mayer, of Fargo, and Barbara and Dan Hughes, of Winona, Minn.; one brother, Deopoldt Herman, of Kulm, N.D.; and many extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and six brothers. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Jamestown, with the Rev. DeVern Schwenn officiating, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
Harley Heupel
Harley Heupel, 75, Bismarck, died May 31, 2000, in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Bismarck Baptist Home Chapel, with the Rev. James Sorenson officiating. Burial will be in St. Luke Lutheran Cemetery, Wishek, at 2:45 p.m. Monday. Pallbearers for the service are all family and friends. Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday at the Baptist Home Chapel. Harley was born July 21, 1924, on the family farm south of Wishek, the son of Edward and Pauline (Ulmer) Heupel. Harley grew up on the family farm and received his elementary education in rural McIntosh County schools. Following his education he continued to live and farm with his family. Harley was married to Lorean Krein on Sept. 29, 1947, at Steele. They returned to the Heupel Family Farm where they lived and farmed. They moved to Wishek in 1960. In 1968, Harley moved to Bismarck. He returned to Wishek for a short time and later lived in Mandan. For the last several years he has resided at the Baptist Home. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church at Bismarck. Harley loved to travel and visit family and friends, telling jokes and exchanging stories. He enjoyed taking senior bus tours across the country and he traveled overseas to Germany. He also enjoyed cars as a hobby, as well as walking and exercising to stay in shape. He is survived by one daughter, Jennie Nagel, Bismarck; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald "Ron" and Pat, Maple Valley, Wash., and Devonno and Teri Heupel, and Lindell and Brenda Heupel, all of Fargo; four grandchildren, Robert Nagel, Adam, Mikayla and Samantha Heupel; one great-grandchild, Dustin Nagel; one brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Mary Lou Heupel, Lincoln, Mich.; and one sister and brother-in-law, Wilma and Cliff Keller, Bottineau. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; two sisters; and one son-in-law, Rodney Nagel. (Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Wishek)
Chester S. Hickle
UNDERWOOD -- Chester S. Hickle, 85, Underwood, died May 31, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan, with burial in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Chester was born Dec. 1, 1914, the son of Sherman G. and Nellie E. (Lamb) Hickle, in Sanger. He is survived by his son, Herbert, Arnaudville, La.; his daughter and son-in-law, Heidi and Monte Berger, Bismarck; four grandchildren, Tyler and Zachary Hickle, both of Omaha, Neb., Krissy Jo Schneider, Bismarck, and Lindsy Dawn Berger, Milnor; one great-grandchild; one brother and two sisters-in-law, William T. and Evelyn, Bismarck, and Doris Hickle, Center; and one sister and brother-in-law, Pearl and Harold Albers, Hannover. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ralph and Harold; and two sisters, Margaret Edelbrock and Ruth Etherington.
Lowell R. Knowlen
GLENCOE -- Lowell R. Knowlen, 69, formerly of Glencoe, died May 29, 2000, in Rapid City, S.D. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Glencoe Presbyterian Church, with Mr. Larry Martin and Mr. Michael Cody officiating. Burial will be in Glencoe Presbyterian Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. today at Dakota Memorial Chapel, Bismarck, where family visitation will be held from 7-9 tonight. Lowell "Russell" Knowlen was born in Eau Clair, Wis. He was raised in Burleigh County where he worked for various farmers until he went into the U.S. Navy in January 1948. Lowell served on several ships in the Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean areas. He served on the U.S.S. Leyte CV32 when it was one of the first ships to be involved in the Korean War. Lowell received several medals in the service and was honorably discharged from his second tour of duty May 18, 1955. Lowell had been to over 50 different countries while in the Navy. Lowell worked for Dowell after leaving the Navy and helped develop the world's first hydro-Electric Fracturing unit to fracture oil wells. Lowell actually worked at many different occupations in his life but his greatest love was the salvage and fur business. He worked for several different firms over the yeras, most notably Chandlers of Pierre, S.D., and various locations for Mardian's. Lowell was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 45 years, Jean. Together they had traveled to almost every state of the union. Lowell was a long-time member of the Worldwide Church of God. They had attended congregations in many states and had many friends across the nation. Lowell was also preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Norman and Johnny. Lowell is survived by two sisters and three brothers, Carol Paulson, Omaha, Neb., Emma Smith, Tulsa, Okla., Delbert G., Fargo, James, Tulsa, and Joe, Mandan. Lowell and Jean are survived by seven children, Lowell Jr., Colleen (Clooten), Delbert, Hank, Susan (Glass), Jean (Walton) and Rebecca. Lowell and Jean are also survived by 14 grandchildren, David Knowlen, Amanda Knowlen, Lorene Knowlen, Phillip Knowlen, Matthew Knowlen, Michael Clooten, Wendy Clooten, Monica Knowlen, Chastity Glass, Fawn Glass, Forrest Glass, Breanna Walton and Amberly Walton.
Del Schneider
Del was born June 25, 1938, in Golden Valley, to William and Ida (Richau) Schneider. He attended school in Coleharbor, and graduated from Ft. Pierre High School in South Dakota. On June 14, 1959, Del married Mardy Trautman in Driscoll. He worked for Del-Mar Vending in Bismarck for 26 years. They moved to Fargo in 1994. He worked for the Frank McKone Company until December when he left due to ill health. Del Schneider, 61, died May 21, 2000, in a Fargo hospital. Del is survived by his wife, Mardy Schneider, Fargo; one daughter and son-in-law, Sherry and Michael Williams, Fargo; a sister, Vivian Quast, Bismarck; a brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Wilhelmine Schneider, Bismarck; and two grandsons, Taylor and Tory Williams, Fargo. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hope Lutheran Church-South Campus, Fargo, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Fargo. (Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo)

Martha Jane Sifton
Martha "Marty" Jane Sifton, 58, Greene, formerly of Minot and Bismarck, died May 29, 2000, in an Albuquerque, N.M. medical center. Martha was born on March 5, 1942, in Bismarck, to Gene and Alice (Hassa) Cunningham. She attended school in Bismarck, graduating from Bismarck High School in 1960. She moved to Minot where she was employed by Minot Federal Savings and Loan in the loan department. Minot Federal was acquired by Midwest Federal Savings and Loan, where Martha continued to work until 1991. She was then employed by Metropolitan Federal Bank in Minot. After her employment with Metropolitan, Martha worked for North Central Human Services also of Minot. Martha also was an independent business owner operating Treasures Found from her home. Martha married Gordon Sifton in January 1995 in Minot. Martha was then employed by Northern Tier Federal Credit Union at Minot Air Force Base as a loan supervisor. Due to her failing health, Martha took a medical leave of absence from Northern Tier Federal Credit Union. Martha was once married to Harlan Andrews and Jerry Pullen. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Minot. Martha was well known for her enjoyment of the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing with her soul mate and husband, Gordon. Martha enjoyed gardening and canning the vegetables she raised in her garden. She is survived by her mother, Alice Cunningham, Bismarck; her husband, Gordon Sifton; Greene; three daughters, Nancy Cabagua, Tijeras, N.M., Deb Halvorson, Minot, and Lynette Azure, Minot; three grandchildren; one sister, Hazel Buck, Sumner, Wash.; and her half-sister, Virginia Tatro, California. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, at First Presbyterian Church, Minot, with burial in Grano Cemetery, Grano. Visitation will be from 2-8:30 p.m. today at Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Reinhold F. Stadler
TURTLE LAKE -- Reinhold F. Stadler, 86, Turtle Lake, died May 30, 2000, in the Turtle Lake hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church, Turtle Lake, with burial in Turtle Lake cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Judy; two stepdaughters, Jodie Rossman, Turtle Lake, and Kelli Ruff, Underwood; one stepson, Keith Bundy, Lake Park, Minn.; 6 step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Martha Heckman, Underwood. Regina M. Swindler
MOTT -- Regina M. Swindler, 87, Mott, died May 29, 2000, in Mott from myelogenous leukemia. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. MDT Friday at Mott Evangelical Community Church, with the Rev. Brian Wright officiating. Burial will be in Sunnyslope Cemetery, Mott. Regina was born Feb. 1, 1913, in Miner County, Carthage, S.D., to Matthias John Meyer and Catharine Elizabeth Kohn. She was one of five children, with siblings, Francis, Agnes, Cele and Sylvester "Tony." The family moved to North Dakota when she was eight months old. Regina and John F. Swindler were united in marriage on March 16, 1931, and farmed south of Mott for many years, raising their family of five children there. John passed away on April 26, 1990, and Regina moved to Mott where she has resided since. Surviving are her children and their spouses, Marion and Ramona Swindler, Bonnie and Raymond Bieber, Janice Gifford, Ronald and Janice Swindler, all of Mott, and ShirleySwindler and Jeff Williams, Anchorage, Alaska; 12 grandchildren, Kerry Swindler, Yvonne Hughes, Mark R. Bieber, Timothy J. Bieber, Brian F. Bieber, Jodi Olson, Marca Kassera, Desiree' Poehls, Margo Hintz, Cameo Frieze, Shawn W. Lince and Shannon Lince; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. JAMESTOWN -- Derek Dwight Wilke, 13, Jamestown, died May 29, 2000, in a Fargo hospital. Derek Dwight was born April 30, 1987, in Jamestown, the son of Gordon and Tammy (Schweitzer) Wilke. He grew up in rural Jamestown, attending Jamestown Middle School. Derek is survived by his parents, Gordy and Tammy Wilke, of Jamestown; a brother, Nathan Wilke, Jamestown; his paternal grandparents, Gordon and Genevieve Wilke, Jamestown; maternal grandparents, Rose Schwietzer, Jamestown; his uncle and aunt, Darwin and Lori Wilke; cousins, Josh and Garret Wilke, both of Bowmon; his uncle, Duane Wilke, Jamestown, ; aunt and uncle, Dilene and Vern Burns, cousins, Terry, Tommy and Genna Burns, all of Jamestown; his aunt June Nelson, Clinton, Mont.; cousins Michael, Tina, Dalton, and Karyssa Nelson, of Missoula, Mont.; Wayne, Lisa, Kyle, and Kory Nelson, of Clinton, Mont.; Janson, Jennifer, David, Jacob, and Rebecka Nelson, of Billings, Mont.; his uncle and aunt, Butch and Sharon Schweitzer, of Marysville, Wash.; cousins, Jay, Jacob, and Jordon Schweitzer, of Everett, Wash.; Leslie and Glen Vander Wel, of Everett, Wash.; and Boddy Schwietzer, of Seattle, Wash. George Zacher
George Zacher, 70, Bismarck, died May 30, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Church of St. Mary, Bismarck, with the Rev. Charlie Heidt officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 6-9 tonight, and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a rosary and vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday. George Zacher was born April 26, 1930, at Strasburg, the son of John and Marianna (Nold) Zacher. He was raised and educated at Strasburg. On Sept. 15, 1953, he married Amalia Krumm at St. Mary's Church, Hague. They farmed in the Strasburg area until 1956, when they moved to Bismarck. While living in Bismarck, George worked construction and drove truck until his retirement. His favorite hobby was working with horses and he also enjoyed yard work. He is survived by his wife, Amalia "Molly;" four sons and daughters-in-law, Jerome and Mary Twentynine Palms, Calif., Frank and Lois, Wilton, Bruce and Rhonda, and Robert and Dawn, all of Mandan; one daughter, Robin, Bismarck; seven grandchildren, Tavi Jo, Tavis Ty, Chris, Andrea, Jerome Joseph, Donovan and Samantha; three sisters, Eleanor Holzer and Agnes Buechler, both of Bismarck, and Virginia Feist, Strasburg; and three brothers, Aloysius, Peter and Valentine, all of Strasburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; one brother; and two nephews.

BOWMAN -- Violet Marie Burt, 94, Bowman, died May 31, 2000 in a Bowman care center. She is survived by three daughters, Stella Thompson, Bowman, Lucille Cook, New Berlin, Wis., and Gladys Tennyson, Waukegan, Ill.; two sons, Henry, Chester, Penn., and William, Manville, Wyo.; one sister, Embie Lake, Salem, Ore.; 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Roy A. Erickson
Roy A. Erickson, 95, 2710 Gateway Avenue, died May 31, 2000 in Bismarck. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at First Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Tom Dunham officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Augustana Cemetery, Sheyenne. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. A prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Monday evening at Eastgate Funeral Service. Roy was born Oct. 9, 1904, the eldest son in a family of six boys and one girl born to Charley and Anna Erickson. The children were Leonard, Arnold, Harold, Lawrence, Pearl and Stanley. He was baptized and confirmed at Augustana Lutheran Church in Granfield Township, between Sheyenne and New Rockford. He attended two years of high school in New Rockford and graduated from Maddock Agricultural High School in 1923. The school term at Maddock was better suited for farm boys. Roy attended the ND Agricultural College, now ND State University, graduating in 1933. He majored in Soil Science and minored in Chemistry and Botany. He was drafted into the Army in 1942 and served in the 18th Weather Squadron. His unit was strictly censored and his family did not know where he was stationed. After the war, he worked as a Soil Scientist with the Federal Government before retiring in 1968. He then did contract work for the University of Minnesota before really retiring in 1981 with more than 50 years of service as a well-respected soils analyst and classifier. Since his retirement, he travelled extensively, visiting 39 countries and 20 islands. Roy never married but took his nieces and nephews on many short trips. He was an advocate of education and encouraged his family to achieve the best education they possibly could. Uncle Roy was very generous with his time and was willing to undertake most any activity anytime. He assisted many of his nieces and nephews in their educations financially. He enjoyed reading and often gave books as gifts. He was part of a close knit family and enjoyed telling stories of his boyhood days and his experiences as a soil scientist. He also enjoyed showing pictures of his travels as he loved photography. Each of his many nieces and nephews has a favorite "Uncle Roy" story and gatherings produced much laughter and fun. Each generation of nieces and nephews, the grandnieces and grandnephews, and now great-grandnieces and nephews felt Uncle Roy was a unique and gentle man. He always dressed sharp and looked good. As a surrogate Grandpa in his 90's and going to school on Grandparents' Day with his great-grand nephew (where he said There's no competition here for being the oldest Grandpa, they're only in their 70's) to still playing "Last Touch" with his niece, who is now a Grandma, he was greatly loved and will be missed by his family. He leaves two sisters-in-law, 14 nieces and nephews, 28 grand nieces and nephews; 12 great-grand nieces and nephews and many friends. See you in heaven, Uncle Roy, we love you and are proud of you. M. Alice Fryhling, 90, San Diego, Calif., and formerly of Bismarck and Grand Forks, died May 25, 2000. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Grand Forks. She is survived by one daughter, Carol Blaisdale, San Diego; and two sons, Robert, San Diego and Richard, Prairie Rose, N.D.; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Esther M. Kenner
DEVILS LAKE -- Esther M. Kenner, 78, Devils Lake, died May 31, 2000 in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake, with the Rev. Harold Ovre officiating and burial will be in Devils Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. today and 9-11 a.m. Saturday, both at Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake, and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Serving as pallbearers will be Larry Weed, Randy Knutson, Martin Soma, Jason Soma, Jason Schall and Jeff Kenner. Esther M. Soma was born July 12, 1921 at Heaton, the daughter of Johan Edwardson and Lizzi Caba Sorenson Soma. At the age of 10, she moved with her family to Glenfield where she graduated from high school in 1939. She attended the Devils Lake General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1942 as a registered nurse. She worked at General Hospital, Lake Region Clinic and Mercy Hospital. On March 29, 1945 she was united in marriage to Arthur D. Kenner at Devils Lake. They established their home on his farm in Grand Harbor Township, rural Devils Lake, farming until they retired in 1984. Mr. Kenner died on March 16, 1985. In the fall of 1985, she moved into Devils Lake where she has since made her home. She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, WELCA, Rebekah's and the North Dakota Nursing Assocation. She enjoyed working with stained glass making many beautiful things. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Larry Knudtson, Bismarck; one son, Dennis Kenner, Devils Lake; seven grandchildren; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Edith Zeller, Fargo, Helen and Robert Weed, Devils Lake, and Cora and Walter Diedrich, Fargo. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur; her sisters, Caroline Knutson and Mabel Zupansky; and her brothers, Edward and Alvin Soma.
