Alvira S. Froelich
Alvira S. Froelich, 87, Mandan, died July 31, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, south of Mandan. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. A Catholic Daughters rosary will be said at 4 p.m. Thursday, and a rosary and parish vigil will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Alvira was born Jan. 7, 1913, in Kensett, Iowa, the daughter of Theodore and Tena (Hegle) Tostenson. She and her family moved to a farm near Lisbon where she was raised and educated. A graduate of Lisbon High School, she attended beauty school in Fargo. She moved to Mandan where she was employed as a beautician and met her husband to be, William G. Froelich. They were married on March 22, 1943, in Des Moines, Iowa, while Bill was in the U.S. Army. She and Bill returned to make their home in Mandan following World War II. After their children were grown, Alvira worked as a hairdresser for many years. A cheerful person with a positive attitude, she enjoyed crossword puzzles and spent many happy hours fishing with Bill and her children. She is survived by her husband, Bill; her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Dennis Phillips, Phoenix; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Roberta, Chelmsford, Mass., and Ted and Yoshi, Yokosuka, Japan; five grandchildren, Melissa and Chad Phillips, and Daniel, Amy and Tim Froelich; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Orville and Joyce Tostenson, Sunnyvale, Calif., and Jim and Marge Tostenson, Sacramento, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Goldie Steffarud; and two brothers, Dale and Morris Tostenson.

He is survived by his son, Taylor Gross; his parents, Dellas and Iris Gross, Morristown; two brothers, Scott, Tucson, Ariz., and Mitchell, Bismarck; four sisters, Tamara Fandrich, Goodrich, Lori Ophdahl, Manfred, April Haluzak, Bismarck, and Denise Perry, Malta, Mont.; and his grandmother, Marie Engle, McClusky. Bernard H. Hillyer
Bernard H. Hillyer, 80, died July 31, 2000, in Knoxville, Iowa. Memorial services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Bernard H. Hillyer Sr. was born April 27, 1920, in Worthing, England, the son of Hugh and Helen Hillyer. He attended Brighton College in England, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in architecture. He served in the H.M.S. Royal Navy during World War II. Bernie moved to the United States in 1946. He lived in Fargo before moving to Bismarck. He operated his own architectural firm during the years he lived in North Dakota. In later years he moved to Minot where he resided for five years before moving to Knoxville in 1993. Since arriving in Knoxville he had served as the building inspector for the City of Knoxville. Bernard is survived by two sons, Dr. Bernard C. Hillyer, Knoxville, and Paul Hillyer, Owatonna, Minn.; two daughters, Mary Nelson, Rosemont, Minn., and Cindy Seabold, Mareno Valley, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many other cherished family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Dorene; and two children, Jill and David. (Bismarck Funeral Home)

Esther Dewey Olson
Esther Dewey Olson, 88, Bismarck, died July 30, 2000, at the home of her daughter, Myrt Armstrong. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jeff Tengesdal officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held at the church one hour before services. Known to many as the "doughnut lady" because of her cooking, she "taught us all the healing nature of food," according to her daughter, Myrt Armstrong. Esther Elizabeth Dewey Olson was born in Barnesville, Minn., on Sept. 2, 1911, at the home of her grandmother, Emma Leonhardt Brandt. She was the daughter of Elizabeth Leonhardt and Arthur Flecher Dewey. She grew up and attended school in Felton, Minn. Her grandfather, Carl Fredrick Weiss was one of the early settlers in western Minnesota, coming from Iowa to start farming on a tree claim of land offered by the Federal Government in 1890. Esther married Casper Martin Olson from Borup, Minn., on March 12, 1930, in Fergus Falls, Minn. She lived most of her adult life in Fargo, working for more than 20 years at the Fargo Clinic. When she retired in 1973, she moved to Bismarck to be near her daughter and family. Esther is survived by her two daughters and one son-in-law, Myrt Armstrong, Bismarck, and Beverly and Richard Ferguson, St. Paul, Minn.; six grandchildren, Steven Armstrong and his wife, Connie Jean, Bismarck, Michael Armstrong and his wife, Connie Ann, Dickinson, Kevlyn Pastorius, St. Paul, Craig Armstrong and his wife, Monica, Dickinson, Susan Winkelman and her husband, Mark, Fargo, and Shelly Martel and her husband, Terry, Bismarck; 14 great-grandchildren, Kelly and Jackson Armstrong, Dickinson, Mitchell and Teryl Armstrong, Grand Forks, Justin and James Pastorius, Livermore, Calif., Sylvia Armstrong, Gillette, Wyo., Jeremy Armstrong, Dickinson, Tyler and Steven Winkelman, Fargo, Ciara and Jake Martel, Bismarck, Jesse and Lacey Armstrong, Bismarck, and Sarah Pastorius, St. Paul; and one great-great-grandchild, Brendan Edward Velander, who was born July 17, 2000. She also is survived by many extended family members and friends. Memorials may be sent to the Mental Health Association of North Dakota or the Abused Adult Resource Center.

Henry Rau
STEELE -- Henry Rau, 93, Steele, died Aug. 1, 2000, in the Steele care center. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Napoleon, with the Rev. Richard Hagestuen officiating. Burial will be in Napoleon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Memorial Chapel, Steele, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday. Henry was born Feb. 14, 1907, in Logan County, the son of Jacob and Katherine (Himmerich) Rau. He was raised and educated in Logan County, living on the farm northeast of Napoleon. He married Melida Mertz in 1932 at the Glueckstal Country Church near Tappen. In 1945 they moved to Napoleon where he worked for Wentz Furniture Store, which later became the Draeger Furniture Store. Melida died in 1981, and in 1982, Henry married Elsie (Naasz) Schauer at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Steele. Henry enjoyed fishing, playing cards and travelling. He was a fireman in Napoleon from 1945 to 1982 and was assistant fire chief for three years and fire chief for three years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Napoleon. Henry is survived by his wife, Elsie, Steele; a niece, who was raised by Henry and Melida, Mavis and her husband, Roger Pommerer, New England; one stepson and his wife, Al and Tootie Schauer, Waubay, S.D.; one stepdaughter and her husband, Phyllis and Irvin Wallner, Tappen; nine step-grandchildren; 17 step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Katie Opp, El Paso, Texas, and Tillie and Milton Wentz, Gackle; one brother and sister-in-law, Edwin and Rose Rau, Jamestown; and many nieces and nephews. Henry was better known as Grandpa Henry by Christopher Pommerer, Rota, Spain, Joseph Pommerer and Jessica Pommerer, both of Annapolis, Md. He will be remembered by his family for his faith and devotion to prayer, his patience, sense of humor and gentle ways. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jacob and Edward; and four sisters, Rose, Bertha, Emma and Lydia.

Christine Schatz, 87, died July 29, 2000, in Mesa, Ariz. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Bismarck Funeral Home. Christine was born Oct. 28, 1912, in Parkston, S.D., to Fred and Sophia Schuler. She married William Schatz on Nov. 7, 1930. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Dale Schlichenmayer, Mesa; two sons and daughters-in-law, Virgil and Mary, Mesa, and DeVerne and Paulette, Brooklyn Park, Minn.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two half-sisters and their husbands; one half-brother and his wife; one stepsister and her husband; one stepsister and three sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her husband.

Dolores Joan Howes
Dolores Joan "Joanie" Howes, 66, Mandan, died Sept. 29, 2000 in a Mandan care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at First Baptist Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Steven Saunders officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon-9 p.m. today and from 9-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Buehler-Larson Funeral Home, Mandan. There will be no visitation at the church. Dolores was born on May 21, 1934 in Drumright, Okla., the daughter of Calvin "Kakie" and Devona "Dutch" (Flenner) Love. She moved with her parents to Dubuque, Iowa, where she graduated from high school. On Aug. 1, 1953, she married Charles Howes in Dubuque. In 1954, they moved to Mandan. Dolores enjoyed fishing and hunting with her husband, camping out with friends, sewing, putting puzzles together and visiting her children and grandchildren. She also liked to read, particularly her Bible and Christian materials. Joanie is survived by her husband, Charlie; son Steve and his wife, Ginger, Livingston, Mont.; her daughters, Susan Weigel and her husband, Ken, Bismarck, and Sally Young, Mandan; her grandsons, David Nelson, Delton, Mich., Darren Howes, Hooks, Texas, and Darrel Howes, Anchorage, Alaska; her granddaughters, Susan Vogel and Stacy Young, both of Mandan, Sarah Scott, Dallas, Texas, and Jody and Jessica Nelson, Bismarck; two great-granddaughters, Stephanie Marie and Alexis Rae Vogel, Mandan; and one brother, Robert Love and his wife, Katherine, Drumright, Okla. She was preceded in death by her parents. Joanie will be deeply missed by her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the people at Medcenter One Care Center, who took such good care of her. She loved them all. The Lord called her home and she is now in His heavenly kingdom with her loved ones, giving the Lord thanks and praise.
