Hazel Stone
TWIN BUTTES -- Hazel (Rowe) Stone, 88, Twin Buttes, entered eternal rest on Aug. 7, 2000 in a Dickinson hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MDT Friday at Twin Buttes Memorial Hall, with the Revs. Vivian Bradwisch and Austin Engel officiating. Burial will follow in the Twin Buttes Congregational Cemetery. Visitation hours will be from 1-7 p.m. MDT today at Seibel Funeral Home, Beulah. She was born June 1, 1912 in Werner, N.D., to Lewis and Ida Belle Rowe. She was raised in the Werner area and graduated from Werner High School in 1929. She earned a teaching certificate from Dickinson Normal School and taught in country schools for two years. She and John Stone Sr. were married on May 12, 1932 in Dickinson. They ranched in the Little Missouri area, and later, in the Twin Buttes area of the Fort Berthold Reservation. He died on Oct. 9, 1986. She spent many years raising her family before returning to her teaching career. She taught at the Red Butte Day School, and later was the Head Start teacher at Twin Buttes until retiring in 1980. She was a charter member of the Twin Buttes Congregational Church and actively served it until declining health forced her to curtail her work. She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Joan; her parents and one sister, Ida Kennedy. She is survived by one son, John and Connie Stone, Twin Buttes; her daughters, Ardella and Emmett Schmitz, Lakewood, Colo., and Cleo and Arnold Charging, White Shield; one sister, Florence Kling, Dunn Center; her brothers, Curtis, Sacramento, Calif., Charles, Seattle, Wash., and Robert, East Wenatchee, Wash.; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Darryl J. Thomas
Darryl J. Thomas, 46, 2115 E. Divide Ave., Bismarck, died Aug. 8, 2000 in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Steve Zastoupil officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation begins from 1-9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a parish vigil at 7 p.m. and a rosary at 8 p.m. Visitation continues on Friday for one hour prior to the service at the church. Darryl J. Thomas, the son of Joseph P. and Rose (Schmid) Thomas was born Sept. 7, 1953 in Bismarck. He was raised and educated in Fallon, graduating from Flasher High School in 1971. Darryl continued his education at the Bismarck School of Nursing graduating in 1975 as a Registered Nurse with a degree in Dialysis. Darryl worked for St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck, and several hospitals in Minneapolis. He returned to Bismarck, where he was employed at Stamart and the N.D. State Penitentiary. Darryl was a member of the N.D. Nursing Association. After his formal education, Darryl's work in the medical field was one of dedication, hard work and most of all with a gentle and healing spirit. His faith played an important part of his life saying his daily prayers. He enjoyed life having mastered a few recipes, finding time to dance his favorite, the polka and being with his family playing bingo. Darryl is survived by his mother, Rose, Bismarck; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Jeanette, and Gene and Gladys, all of Mandan; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Irene and Ben Hoffman, Bismarck, and Delores Smith, Missoula, Mont.; and several nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, John.
Anna Mae Weiler
On Aug. 9, 2000 Anna Mae Weiler, 73, Bismarck, passed away at her home after battling leukemia. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas E. Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Public visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Boelter Funeral Home, where a rosary will be said at 7 p.m. tonight. Visitation will continue Friday one hour before services at the church. Anna Mae was born Aug. 1, 1927 in St. Cloud, Minn., the daughter of Anton and Magdalena (Fischer) Ebertz. When she was nine years old, her family moved to Jamestown, where she attended St. James Academy. A good student, with a love for words, Anna Mae never missed a day of class her senior year. After high school, she attended and graduated from the Minneapolis Business College, where she honed her typing skills and became proficient at dictation. Anna Mae returned to Jamestown after college and worked as a waitress in her father's restaurant, the Ebertz Cafe. While working there, she met a customer, Don Weiler, with whom she eventually fell in love and married on Oct. 21, 1953. In 1954, Anna Mae and Don moved to Bismarck, where they have since made their home. Anna Mae was a homemaker and devoted mother, who volunteered in the library at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit even after her sons had graduated. Anna Mae is survived by her loving and committed husband of 46 years, Don. She is also survived by her sons, Steve and Dave, her daughter-in-law, Heidi, her precious grandsons, Kyle and Andrew, and her brother, Joseph Ebertz. Anna Mae was preceded in death by her brothers, Tony and Johnny Ebertz and her sister, Marie Clapp. Memorials may be made to Saint Mary's Central High School. (Boelter Funeral Home, Bismarck)

Pearl E. Batterberry
TUTTLE -- Pearl E. Batterberry, 88, Mandan, formerly of Tuttle, died Aug. 13, 2000, in the Mandan care center. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at English Lutheran Church, Tuttle, with the Rev. Allen Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Tuttle Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 9 a.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Pearl Ethel Felch was born March 3, 1912, in Haynes Township in Kidder County, the daughter of Herbert and Emma (Richardson) Felch. She was raised and educated in Tuttle. Pearl married John E. Batterberry on July 20, 1932, in Steele. They lived in Tuttle where Pearl worked as a cook for the school and served as a postal employee for 20 years. John died in 1983. Pearl retired in the early 1990s and moved to Bismarck. Pearl loved flowers and was an avid sports fan, enjoying watching the Chicago Bulls. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Norman and Fern, Garrison, Darrell and Maureen, Moorhead, Minn., and DeWitt and Marlene, West Fargo; six grandchildren, Marsha and her husband, Richard Brown, Glendale, Ariz., Dr. Shawn and his wife, Linda Batterberry, Denver, Lynn Batterberry, Eden Prairie, Minn., Troy Batterberry, Kirkland, Wash., Lorrie Batterberry and Shanna Batterberry, both of Moorhead; five great-grandchildren, Roman, Rutger, Rio, Brandon and Jacob Batterberry; one brother, Ervin Felch, Tuttle; two sisters, LaVon Zerr, Tuttle, and Sylvia Subart, Robinson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; three brothers; and two sisters.

Ruby Buffington
Ruby Buffington, 54, Bismarck, died Aug. 13, 2000, in her home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Kermit Culver officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. today at Bismarck Funeral Home, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Ruby was born on Oct. 15, 1945, the daughter of Edwin and Melinda (Burr) Hottman in Eureka, S.D. She was raised on a farm in Eureka and graduated in 1963. She married Jerry Buffington on June 26, 1966, while working in Aberdeen, S.D. She enjoyed local auto racing and the NASCAR circuit. She also had a great passion for gardening, cooking and especially for her grandchildren and children. Ruby is now gone to be with her daughter, Dana, in Heaven. She is survived by her husband, Jerry; one son and daughter-in-law, Darren and Elysia, Bismarck; two wonderful grandchildren, Dana and Breanna, both of Bismarck; one sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Ken ERdmann, Aberdeen, S.D.; two brothers, Mike and Edwin Hottman, both of Aberdeen, S.D. She was preceded in death by her parents; and one daughter, Dana. The family prefers memorials to First United Methodist Church.

LUVERNE -- Memorial services for Robert Jacob Jacobsen, 75, Luverne, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Luverne Lutheran Church. He died died Aug. 11, 2000, in a farm accident. He is survived by his wife, Arda; five sons, Ried, Downers Grove, Ill., Lyle, Dayton, Va., Jerome, Grand Prairie, Texas, Roy, Fargo, and Larry, Luverne; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Norma Carmichael, Ogden, Utah, and Lolo Greenland, Hayward, Calif.; and three brothers, Talbert, Valley City, Richard, Cumby, Texas, and Donald, Savannah, Ga. Haaken E. Leland
Haaken E. Leland of Scottsdale, Ariz., passed away at his home on Aug. 9, 2000, surrounded by his family. Haaken was born in Union Township on Sept. 10, 1916, to Henry J. and Rachel Leland. After graduating from Robinson High School, Haaken served his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, stationed in Rome-Arno Northern Appennines (Italy and North Africa). His war decorations included American Theater Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Upon discharge, Haaken returned to Robinson and began farming and raising cattle. He served on the Selective Service Board, Robinson School Board, was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in both Robinson and Scottsdale, and was a member of the American Legion. Haaken is survived by his wife of 32 years, Delores; his daughters, Ellen Russell, Scottsdale, Maria Leland, Bethesda, Md., and Marilyn Martin and Carla Roberts, both of Scottsdale; one son, Wally Swanson, Kearney, Neb.; his grandchildren, Alexander, Emma and Madison Russell, Jonathan Martin, Michelle Pohlo and Kristine Roberts, Tammy, David and Sandra Swanson, and Kyle and Daniel Swanson. Haaken is also survived by his sisters, Esther Hagseth, Mae Crump, Edith Drake and Evelyn Jane Colby; brothers, H. Perry Leland and Dr. Allen Leland; 18 nieces and nephews; and numerous extended family. Haaken was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Johannes, Adolph and Henry Leland, and Martha Sophia Hanson; one son, Douglas Swanson; and fellow farmer, Hjalmer Hagseth. STEELE -- Kathleen M. Mullen, 73, Steele, died Aug. 14, 2000, in a Fargo hospital. Burial will be in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Steele. Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Chapel, Steele, where a rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before services. Kathleen Schafer was born to Henry J. and Mary (Cantwell) Schafer on Aug. 7, 1927, in Mandan. Upon graduation from St. Theresa's in Winona, Minn., Kathy accepted a teaching position in Tappen. It was in Tappen that she met Andrew J. Mullen. They were married on June 23, 1951, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan. Their union was blessed by four children. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Maureen and Reed Knowles, Toledo, Ohio, Timothy, Alexandria, Minn., Mary Pat and Jim Wolf, Fargo, and Kevin, Alexandria; her grandchildren, Andrew Molbert, Allie and Jennyh Wolf, Fargo, David and Sean Knowles, Toledo; and step-grandchildren, Emily, Jason and Amy Wolf. Kathy was preceded in death by her husband, Andy; her parents; her sister, Margaret Fenig; and her brother, Robert Schafer. The family prefers memorials to St. Frances de Sales Catholic Church.

WASHBURN -- O. A. Schulz, 70, Washburn, died Aug. 14, 2000, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church, Washburn, with the Rev. Irvin Bruenjes officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Washburn. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. today at Goetz Funeral Home, Washburn, and will continue at the church one hour before services. Orville Arthur Schulz was born May 14, 1930, at Golden Valley, to Arthur and Christine (Miller) Schulz. He graduated from Golden Valley High School in 1948, and then served in the U.S. Air Force from June 14, 1948 to May 21, 1949, when he received a medical discharge. He had been stationed at Randolph Air Force Base and Fort Sam Houston in Texas. He returned to North Dakota and attended Dickinson State College and then taught rural school south of Hazen for two years in 1951 and 1952. He then moved to Bismarck and was employed at the Bismarck Post Office for six years from 1953 to 1959 while attending Bismarck Junior College. He married Mary Inches on Jan. 29, 1955, at Bismarck, where they made their home. He studied law under Supreme Court Justice, James Morris. He passed the North Dakota State Bar Exam and was admitted to the practice of law in 1959. On Aug. 1, 1959, they moved to New Salem where O.A. opened a law office. In 1972 he opened a second office at Center. He served as Morton County Justice from 1960-1963 and Oliver County States Attorney from 1972 to 1978. He was secretary of the Oliver County Water Resource District from 1972 to 1982. From 1972 to 1978 he served as president of the Morton County Bar Association and had served as secretary and attorney for the coal conversion counties of Oliver, Mercer and McLean from 1975 to 1977. In January 1983 he became county judge, serving Oliver, Mercer, McLean and Sheridan counties and made his home in Washburn. He retired in December 1994. He had been active in his church, Lions Club and the Disabled American Veterans. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed woodworking in his retirement. He is survived by his wife, Mary; one son, Jason, Minneapolis; one sister, Betty Fettig, Las Vegas; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Jim and Shirley, Bismarck, and Delton, Thief River Falls, Minn; one niece; and four nephews.

John was born Oct. 9, 1915 at Shields, to Joseph and Julia (Douglas) Brings Them. He was raised and educated in Shields and served in the US Army from June 1941 to October 1945. He enjoyed playing cards, TV, and watching his adopted grandchildren play. He is survived by one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Brings Them, Fort Yates; many nieces and nephews; one special adopted niece, Vivian Keeps Eagle; and his whole adopted Keeps Eagle family.
